Former WWE commentator Jonathan Coachman believes the real friction between The Rock and Triple H comes down to one thing: jealousy over Hollywood.
The former WWE announcer said ‘The Game’ once desperately wanted to be a movie star, watched The Rock become exactly that, and that it still eats at him to this day.
Speaking on 2 Count Tuesday, Coachman claimed the mutual respect the two men project in public is a facade. He says he witnessed the tension up close.
Why don’t you think, JD, people believe me when I say that Triple H and The Rock, as much as they say on Unreal, ‘Oh, we respect each other,’ they do not. Triple H wants to be what The Rock is,” Coachman said.
Coachman Says He Was “In The Room”
Coachman leaned on firsthand access to back his claim, saying he was present for conversations that shaped his view. He framed Triple H’s Hollywood ambition as something the wrestler never hid.
And I was there for this too, JD. I was there. I was in the room with 10 people. That’s it. Triple H wanted to be a movie star. He did not make any bones about it. And when he was in Blade 3, that was his first major motion picture. That’s what he wanted,” Coachman said.
He continued by listing the names who crossed over the way Triple H wanted to.
And as much as he wants to run the WWE, JD, think about it. Rock, John Cena, now Roman, Cody, MJF, they’re all movie stars. There is a gigantic jealousy component to this whole thing. I’ll give Triple H his flowers in wrestling. But when you live a long career and a long life, you want to expand. And he’s never been allowed to do that. So his whole legacy is wrestling. And I believe it eats at him. I really, really do,” Coachman said.
The Theory On Rock’s WWE Return
Co-host JD took the conversation further, speculating that the alleged tension could be shaping creative decisions. He suggested The Rock may avoid a major WWE moment specifically to deny Triple H the credit.
If Rock wants to do it, he’s going to do it. The reason why he’s not going to do it is because he doesn’t want Triple H to have that on his resume that it happened in his administration or under his leadership,” JD said.
The remarks add a new layer to a debate fans have argued for years. D’Lo Brown previously described the original tension as competitive heat between two rising stars chasing the same top spot, but Coachman’s account reframes it as something more personal and ongoing.
Triple H has spoken publicly about The Rock on multiple occasions, including addressing the possibility of a Rock return to WWE and drawing comparisons between The Rock and Donald Trump. Coachman’s claim casts those friendly comments in a different light.
