Zamaya Talks MLW, Traveling With Spiked Shoulder Pads, And Inspirations

Zamaya has left a path of destruction in her wake since arriving in Major League Wrestling. The imposing figure’s dominance has been a big story within the company’s emerging women’s division. After building an impressive name throughout the independent scene, the Arizona native caught the eye of MLW. She signed with them on April 29 and debuted during the return of Fusion against Carolina Cruz a month later.

“It has meant everything,” Zamaya said of joining MLW. “I have been wrestling for three- and-a-half years now. To get this opportunity so early on is incredible. I got to start with MLW at such an amazing moment because I feel MLW is at a point now where stuff is rolling, and we have so many new faces, and it’s super cool. MLW is just the place to be. It’s on fire. It’s building every single day. Why not be part of the hottest company and have the fastest growing professional wrestler on it? And they are super welcoming with creativeness. They are open to your creative ideas. It is such a cool place to be.”

Zamaya immediately turned heads given not only her powerhouse offense, but colorful face paint and big hair likened. The overall presentation was inspired by those the star was inspired by including WWE Hall of Famers Bull Nakano and Luna Vachon. Them and Avengers villain Thanos. She also received motivation to embrace the powerhouse style by her coaches.

“[Bull Nakano] is a bad ass. When I first started, I had the spiked hair, eventually that leaned more into Luna Vachon. I started to curl it a bit. Then just the intensity overall. When you watch her you’re like, ‘These girls are dying.’ That was an inspiration of being intense, being vicious,” Zamaya said. “I grew up loving Jefff Hardy, Sting. So I was like all these guys i love have painted faces, so I leaned more into that. It’s just a way to express myself a lot more.”

While viewers may only see what the finished product is on show days, there’s more that goes into it. For Zamaya, the process starts with packing for the road.

“I need three bags. There is no less. I can not take two. It has to be three because the big spikes are not allowed on the plane. So, I do have to get that bag checked. So my football pads go in the suitcase with two big cans of hairspray. So those all get checked,” she said. “And my meal prep is in there. In my smaller bag is all my gear, all my makeup, everything that Zamaya would need. And my backpack is just all the rest. Just comb, brush, charger, the little necessities. I always think it’s funny when I tell people I only check a bag for the spikes because they will not allow it. It’s a weapon.”

Despite her recent string of bodies stacked in MLW, she appreciated how welcoming the roster has been. The relatively new talent also isn’t above learning from the veterans in the locker room.

“They are women who have so much experience in the business already. When I was probably 16, I’m 24 now, I was watching Shotzi on TV,” Zamaya said. “It has been super cool to have this full circle moment and go to these women with questions, with creative ideas and have them give me their opinion and help me out as the young kid coming into the locker room. It has been super awesome. I’m super blessed by the women we have there. I’m also super excited to see what women are added to the roster because I feel we right now have so many different women> everyone has a different kind of role, and it’s super cool.”

As for names she would like to see next in MLW, Zamaya brings up Brittnie Brooks. The two have faced off in the where Zamaya recently captured the Future Stars of Wrestling Women’s Championship in Las Vegas.

“She is so hard-working and determined…She has helped me since I started in wrestling,” Zamaya  said. “I think she has it all. I think she is a killer. It would be super cool to see her here.”

The business caught the eye of the emerging breakout at age 4. She has been infatuated by it ever since. Her parents have been supportive of their daughter’s chosen path. The family often attends shows, witnessing the carnage firsthand.

“My mom actually makes the joke, and it’s a true story according to them, that when I was born in the hospital, there was Friday Night SmackDown just playing on the TV at random volume all the way down,” Zamaya said. “They were like, ‘Okay, the seed was planted there.’ Then as I got older my dad always had it on the TV because this was something he wanted to do. Naturally, I kept seeing it over and over and thought it was cool. As I got older, the passion never left, so I picked it up.”

Peeling back the curtain, Zamaya reveals there are more interests beyond the ring. When she isn’t putting a whipping on opponents she likes to whip up desserts.

“I’m super into baking. I love baking,” Zamaya said. “I bake cookies, brownies, and cakes. That’s my little side hobby. I just love to bake. I think that would surprise quite a few people.”

Next up for Zamaya on MLW TV is against Priscilla Kelly. Someone who knows a thing or two about standing out, as well as the grind. Regardless, Zamaya sees this Fusion match as another stepping stone to the gold.

“She has so much experience in the business. I respect her so much for what she has been through and overcame,” she said. “What she has accomplished in the business. I think I’m so new, and she is so experienced that this clash is exciting because we hadn’t wrestled before this moment. Although she has the experience, I think I’m the new force to be reckoned with. I’m just taking MLW by storm, so I’m super excited for people to see this.

“…My plan for the past few months was to tiptoe in and learn as much as possible. Figure out what we’re dealing with. Now I’ve told everyone that it is now Zamaya’s world. MLZ, I’m taking MLW by storm. I am the chaos force to be reckoned with, and I’m going to take over. It doesn’t matter who is in my way.”
