Injured El Hijo del Vikingo Vacates AAA Mega Title, New Champion to be Crowned Next Month

El Hijo del Vikingo has vacated the AAA Mega Championship due to an injury that the now-former champ unfortunately suffered last month

The injury in question happened during a match in the López Mateos Arena. Vikingo was assessed at the venue and it was believed he had damaged a ligament in his right knee. His match was called off and he was tended to backstage.

AAA Mega Title Vacated

The AAA Mega Championship has been vacated due to the Vikingo’s injury. The promotion announced that a new champion will be crowned at Triplemania XXXII Monterrey on April 27. Alberto El Patron won a triple threat match against Cibernético and Psycho Clown to qualify for the upcoming AAA Mega Championship match.

Vikingo won the title back at TripleMania Regia II in December of 2021. His 828-day reign is the longest in the title’s history. He also boasts the record for the most title defenses, with his 23 defenses being more than double of El Texano Jr. who holds the #2 spot with 11 defenses.

El Hijo del Vikingo’s Setbacks

This is the latest setback for Vikingo, who suffered a significant injury in late 2023. Vikingo suffered a hip injury at an ROH event when a dive went wrong and was seen using a wheelchair after the match. That incident happened just one month after Vikingo collapsed backstage at AAA TripleMania XXXI: Mexico City. On social media, a video backstage made its way around, showing the Vikingo down backstage and being stretchered away.
