Bret Hart Honored By Ronda Rousey & Natalya Hart Foundation Tribute

0

Natalya and Ronda Rousey teamed up to give their opponents a “Hart Attack” last night. The move was the finisher for Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart for years when they were a tag-team.

Hart took the time to say how honored he was by the gesture.

Ronda Rousey then responded:

Natalya chimed in as well:

Ronda Rousey on Natalya’s Influence

Rousey spoke about Natalya earlier this summer while promoting the movie Mile 22.

“I’ve known Nattie years before I started wrestling,” Rousey said. “She teaches me so much technically, obviously but I was coming into a new environment, I was nervous and felt like the new kid in school,” Rousey said. “She really went out of her way to make me feel welcome and comfortable and part of the family. She’s been amazing since day one and I’m so lucky to have her as a friend.”

Ronda Rousey (c) vs Alexa Bliss

It took less than 5 minutes for Ronda Rousey to roll through Alexa Bliss when they met at Summerslam. Rousey is undefeated since joining WWE earlier this year. Including house shows, Rousey is a perfect 18-0.

On WWE programming she’s 5-0 with 3 singles victories, 1 in mixed tag-team action, and one last night in traditional tag-team action with Natalya.

Jimmy Hart Impostor Claims He’s Attending Klan Event

1

“The Mouth Of The South” Jimmy Hart has run into some issues with Twitter after a fake account claimed that he would be in attendance at a “klan rally.”

“there is a twitter account (claiming to be me) that states I will be attending a klan rally – that is not that case,” Hart declared, before stating, “I will not be at a klan rally.”

He also reached out to Twitter’s official account, @verified, which determines which accounts will receive a ‘Blue Tick.’ That tick acts as a visual indicator that confirms that the actual celebrity/personality owns that Twitter account.

Verification

Without that Blue Tick, it’s far too easy for fake accounts to trick fans into following them and the lies they might spread.

Many superstars have had issues with fake accounts trolling fans, interacting with their fanbase whilst posing as the celebrities they are impersonating.

In the case of Jimmy Hart, however, the best thing he could have done is reach out the way he has done. It not only directly highlights the fact he won’t be attending this rally but also that some public personalities could do with the verification, if only so their fans won’t be left confused over potential poser activity that could ruin a person’s reputation.

Alexa Bliss Comments On Becky Lynch’s “Attitude Adjustment”

0

Whilst on a recent media call, ex-Raw Women’s Champion, Alexa Bliss, commented on Becky Lynch’s recent “attitude change.” Bliss said that she was “always in favour when someone has a certain attitude adjustment and she undergoes a change,” before she confessed, “I think it’s been a long time coming for Becky.”

“I think that attitude change is what she’s needed,” Bliss noted, before praising Lynch’s fire and spark. “The attitude change really allows her to show that. Where, before, she was restricted. I think it just fits her far better.”

Becky Lynch turned on her former best friend, Charlotte Flair, after the end of their triple threat match at SummerSlam in August.  Flair would hit her signature move, the Natural Selection, on her friend as Lynch was moments away from making Carmella tap out to her finisher, the Dis-Arm-Her.

Since that moment, the two have been sniping back and forth as tensions continue to rise, with fan support seemingly firmly with Becky, as we head towards their eagerly anticipated confrontation at Hell In A Cell this Sunday.

Hell In A Cell also sees Alexa Bliss receive her mandatory rematch against former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion, and current WWE Raw Women’s champion, “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey. Rousey bested Bliss for the championship at SummerSlam.

Daniel Bryan Wrestles After SmackDown, Rusev Day On Using The Freebird Rule

Daniel Bryan Wrestles After SmackDown

The main event of this week’s episode of SmackDown Live saw Brie Bella battling Maryse in a one on one match with both Daniel Bryan and The Miz being at the ringside.

While this match ended in a disqualification, both Miz and Bryan returned to the ring after 205 Live went off air for a dark main event, which was announced by Paige in a dark segment earlier in the show.

Unlike the main event, this match saw a clear winner as Daniel was able to defeat the former IC Champion. Both these couples are set to face each other in a mixed tag match at the upcoming Hell In A Cell PPV.

Rusev Day On Using The Freebird Rule

This week’s SmackDown episode saw Rusev Day defeating The Bar in an upset victory, and the two earned the right to challenge the New Day at the upcoming PPV with this win.

After the show, the duo and Lana were interviewed backstage where they talked about their upcoming Championship match against the New Day and more.

The trio also talked about an interesting possibility of them using the Freebird rule, which would make Lana the SmackDown tag champion as well. You can check out the full interview in the video below:

How was Raw’s viewership this week?

0

While the viewership for this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw suffered a drop, the show was still able to hold up just fine considering the competition.

The Raw episode featuring the segment between Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns as the main event where Roman performed a Samoan drop on Strowman through the stage drew 2.740 million viewers.

This is down 4.6% from last week’s episode of the show which had the segment of the locker room heels beating down the Shield as the main event and had drawn 2.872 million viewers.

The first hour of the show drew 2.818 million viewers and the second hour drew 2.801 million viewers. In comparison, last week’s show had drawn 2.945 million and 2.933 million viewers in the respective hours.

The third hour of Raw was again the lowest watched hour of the Red Branded Show, and it drew 2.601 million viewers, down from last week’s 2.740 million.

While this was a significant drop from last week, considering the fact that Raw was up against two football games, the viewership was still better than what many were expecting.

The start of the football season also appears to be the reason why the company has announced the Undertaker’s appearance in advance this time and it’d be interesting to see how the show does with the Dead Man’s return next week.

Curt Hawkins Had To Fight To Keep His Losing Streak Alive

3

WWE Superstar Curt Hawkins recently did an interview on The Sam Roberts’ Wrestling Podcast. Hawkins discussed a wide range of topics; such as leaving WWE, life on the indies, returning to the company, and much more. One interesting topic of discussion was Hawkins’ current losing streak. The former Edge Head hasn’t won a match on WWE TV in quite some time.

His losing streak is well over 200 matches by now. It turns out, that streak almost ended not too long ago. Hawkins revealed he had to beg WWE writers not to end the streak. Initially, the plan was for him to defeat Heath Slater on an episode of Main Event.

Almost Ending The Streak

Hawkins knew that would be irrelevant, and pleaded with the lead writer of RAW to ask Vince McMahon to allow him to lose instead:

“What really sparked it all was… there was some kind of online article or something that said, ‘Hey, Curt Hawkins just lost his 100th match in a row’. Where, I think like… and I’m not throwing a shot out there but I think most of my colleagues if they saw that about themselves they’d be like, ‘Man, that’s bulls**t’ and be upset about it.

“A bunch of people tweeted me this information and I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s true, yes. Lets talk about it. I didn’t know what it could become, but I knew like why not embrace it and acknowledge it.

“There’s been times since that article where I was supposed to… I remember one time I was supposed to beat Heath Slater on Main Event and I went, ‘Oh, no’ – I said ‘no, no, please no, this could be something.’ There’s no sense in ending it on Main Event against Slater.” Hawkins said.

“I literally went to the head writer of RAW and said, ‘Please no, I can’t [lose my streak]’ and they were cool about it in the first place because it was more like, ‘Hey, good job. You get to win one tonight’ and I’m like oh God no, you don’t understand, and I remember that particular night, I was like, ‘Can I just run something by you…

“You guys[creative writers] are all aware of the streak?’ They say yeah and I go, ‘Does Vince know about it?’ They’re like, ‘Probably not’ – well can you please just tell him before he makes a decision tonight – I got out of it.”

AJ Styles Nearly Changed His Name After Signing With WWE

3

Current WWE Champion AJ Styles spoke to ESPN last month to promote his match with Samoa Joe. Styles and Joe battled it out for the WWE’s top prize in a bout that ultimately ended in a disqualification.

During the conversation, Styles talked about signing with WWE back in 2016. That process included a meeting with WWE COO Triple H. “The Game” wasn’t sure that they would be able to retain his “AJ Styles” ring name.

Styles said he would be okay with that, but the big “AJ” tattoo on his side might be a problem:

“When Triple H and I were talking, he said, ‘I don’t know if we’ll be able to keep your name.’ I said, ‘That’s fine, I’ll be any name you want me to be called, except I do have this huge AJ tattoo on my side so that might be a problem,’” Styles said.

“I think it worked out for the best because we weren’t taken and being changed into something else. We were the same characters that they saw from different companies and that they were familiar with and people were already invested in. I think that was a good move by WWE.”

How do you think a name change would’ve impacted Styles’ WWE career?

Carmella Explains How Her Father Influenced Her WWE Career

0

WWE star Carmella was recently interviewed by KATC TV to promote SmackDown Live in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Carmella opened up on her professional wrestling career, and how she was influenced by her father. The former SmackDown Live Women’s Champion’s father is Paul Van Dale, a former jobber in WWE. After her cheerleading career in the NFL and NBA, Carmella decided to follow in her dad’s footsteps:

“I have a background in dance so I danced my entire life, since I was three years old,” said Carmella.

“And I cheered in the NFL [for the Patriots), in the NBA [for the Lakers]. My dad was a wrestler back in the early 90s, so it just brought everything full circle with my dad’s background and my love of performing and entertainment, and now here I am in the WWE.”

After cheerleading for the New England Patriots for three seasons, Carmell applied to Tough Enough in 2010. She withdrew her application, however, as she landed a gig cheerleading for the Los Angeles Lakers.

In 2013 she joined NXT and made her main roster debut in 2016. Carmella went on to defeat Charlotte Flair for the SDL Women’s Championship. She did this by cashing in her Money In The Bank (MITB) briefcase, the first ever won by a woman.

Charlotte eventually won the title back from Carmella at SummerSlam, and “Money” is looking to get another crack at “The Queen”:

“Well, Charlotte Flair,” Carmella said. “She took my title from me. I did beat her twice, however she beat me and took my title from me unfortunately. But I’m gonna get it back.”

Alexa Bliss On Her Initial Reaction To WWE Signing Ronda Rousey

0

WWE Superstar Ronda Rousey recently took part in a media conference call to promote the Hell In A Cell (HIAC) pay-per-view (PPV). During the call, Bliss talked about her ongoing rivalry with Ronda Rousey.

Rousey defeated Bliss for the RAW Women’s Championship at SummerSlam last month. Now Bliss will get her rematch for the title this Sunday in Texas.

Bliss talked about WWE signing Rousey, their match at HIAC, and what she needs to do to end Rousey’s dominance in WWE. Here are the highlights:

Ronda Rousey’s arrival to the WWE boosted the women’s evolution. When did you know about Ronda coming to the WWE, and what was your initial reaction?

“I think it’s great. I’ve said it before, that I think if we can have any woman from any other background to come into the WWE, it makes it better for the performers. So, I’ve been a fan of it since day one.”

With all the hype surrounding Ronda Rousey, how big of an opportunity is it for you to establish yourself as the most dominant women’s athlete by beating her at the Hell In A Cell pay–per–view?

“Obviously, I have some things to work on. SummerSlam did not go according to plan, so it’s time to look back and see what I did wrong, and find Ronda’s weakness, work on it, and figure out a way to get my title back, because that would probably legitimize my (spot) as the most dominant champion at that point.”

Ronda Rousey came to the WWE with a chip on her shoulder, but has been dominant thus far. What do you think it would take to finally end her dominance in the company?

“I think, for me, it would be to show that Ronda’s not really the baddest woman on the planet, and that the baddest woman on the planet is still beatable – I said the same thing about Asuka, that there is no such thing as ‘unbeatable’; I might be the one to prove that with Ronda. That would be the most amazing thing for me.”

Matt Jackson On If Batista Was Considered For All In

2

Last week’s All In pay-per-view (PPV) was a big success. The Sears Centre in Chicago, Illinois played host to the self-funded event by Cody and The Young Bucks.

Several big names in the indy professional wrestling scene were on the card. Kenny Omega, Cody, The Young Bucks, Rey Mysterio, Pentagon Jr., Okada, and so many more competed at the show.

Also, big names like Jeff Jarrett, Diamond Dallas Page, Tommy Dreamer, and Road Warrior Animal made special appearances as well. When it was all said and done, Cody and The Young Bucks did what they set out to do – put on one of the biggest professional wrestling shows of the year.

Recently, a fan on Twitter asked Matt Jackson if there were any plans to bring in Batista for the show. The former WWE Champion is currently a free agent in the professional wrestling world but is focusing more on his acting career.

Jackson joked that they considered “The Animal” to be put in the Burnard the Business Bear suit:

Sting Reveals Where He Got The Scorpion Deathlock From

3

WWE Hall Of Famer Sting was recently a guest on the Apter Chat podcast.

During the interview, Sting revealed where he got the idea for the Scorpion Deathlock. Apparently, Sting got the inspiration from a wrestling by the name of Riki Choshu at a Japanese show:

“I was fortunate enough in those early days, while I was still with Bill Watts, (Giant) Baba from Japan wanted me to come do a show,” Sting said.

“Bill sent me to Japan and there was a wrestler named Riki Choshu. He used that hold and I went ‘oh, I like that’ and so then the scorpion kinda popped in all at the same time and attempting to brand myself.”

The former WCW World Heavyweight Champion then discussed the demise of WCW. He was one of the key characters in the promotion’s legacy. When WCW finally came to an end and was bought out by WWE, Sting said it felt “surreal”:

“It was shocking, it was surreal,” Sting said. “It was emotional because it was a lot of years of a lot of sacrifice. Fighting tooth and nail to not be the second class wrestling organization, but to finally evolve into the number one wrestling organization in the world.

“To be that first class wrestling organization. A global machine. And to just watch it slip through your fingers and be gone and totally out of your control, I always said it was like the enemy coming into your camp and having their way.”

More On Pentagon Jr. & Fenix To WWE Rumors

1

We have more on the rumors suggesting Pentagon Jr. and Fenix are WWE bound.

Earlier this month, it was noticed that Pentagon Jr. shared a story on his official Facebook page suggesting he and his brother were heading to WWE. MLW also teased this in a recent Tweet. However, Pentagon himself quickly shot this rumor down at a PCW Ultra event.

Following a successful PCW Ultra Championship defense, Pentagon made the following comments:

“Respect that I am the PCW Champion and no one is going to take that from me. Thank you very much! And before I forget. I am not going anywhere. Penta will be in PCW for many, more years.”

Per a report from Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, Pentagon Jr. and Fenix aren’t able to sign with any other promotion at this time. They’re currently inked to contracts with Lucha Underground. However, the opportunity may arise when the fourth season of Lucha Underground wraps up.

Currently, it’s unknown when the season will end. The 14th episode will air this week and last season featured 40 episodes.

There’s a strong feeling that Pentagon and Fenix could opt to sign with WWE once their deals are up. They could also decide to renew their deal with Lucha or sign with another promotion such as AAA.

The September 11, 2018 edition of WWE SmackDown Live took place at the Cajundome in Lafayette, LA, and was the go-home show for Hell In A Cell.

– This week’s broadcast opens up with an 11-bell salute and moment of silence to remember the September 11th attacks.

– Jeff Hardy comes out to the ring to kick off the show, and he’s got a mic. Jeff talks about facing demons and overcoming them, and how this Sunday he is going to overcome another demon inside Hell In A Cell. But that’s Sunday, and tonight Jeff says he has to conquer another demon from his recent past – Shinsuke Nakamura. Jeff tells Nakamura to get out here and face him, and then Jeff says on Sunday he’s going straight to Hell.

Jeff Hardy vs. Shinsuke Nakamura: Jeff starts off strong with a jawbreaker, and things quickly fall out to ringside. Jeff springboards off the ring steps for a splash on Nakamura against the fan barricade. Back in the ring, Nakamura fights back and tries to keep Hardy grounded with a chin lock. Charlotte vs. Sonya Deville: The opening bell sounds and they fight back and forth early on until Sonya grabs the hair for a cheap shot. Sonya continues the offense now until Charlotte fires back with a big boot. Sonya rolls outside for a breather. Back in the ring, Sonya tries to mount some offense, but Charlotte shuts her down with a back suplex. Sonya and Charlotte trade strikes now until Charlotte hits a backbreaker and slams Sonya down. Sonya comes back with some knees to the body and then she looks for a triangle choke. Charlotte lifts up Sonya and powerbombs her down for a two count. Charlotte follows up with the Figure Eight for the win via submission.

Winner: Charlotte

– After the match, Charlotte poses with some fans at ringside for a selfie, but then someone in the crowd attacks Charlotte from behind. Charlotte falls down, and the woman pulls off her glasses and black wig to revel that it’s Becky Lynch. Becky hops the fan barricade and beats down Charlotte on the ramp. Referees separate them, an Becky says on Sunday she’s taking back her Women’s Title.

– We go to a pre-taped promo from Samoa Joe. AJ says he has a bedtime story, and this one is about AJ Styles. Joe pulls out a big story book, and reads off a rhyming poem about AJ. Joe talks about AJ forgetting his family, and his plans to destroy him on Sunday. Joe says he’ll become the new dad to AJ’s kids, and at the end of the book Joe shows a drawing of himself with AJ’s wife and kid.

– The New Day comes out to ringside and sits at their own broadcast table at ringside. They send us back to Kofi Kingston, who wants to interview The Bar backstage. The Bar walks off without noticing Kofi as Kofi makes fun of them.

The Bar vs. Rusev Day: The Bar starts off strong in this one against Rusev, trading frequent tags and keeping the Bulgarian Brute down. Rusev finally fights off Sheamus with a big boot, and then Aiden English tags in and hits a big cross-body off the top. English keeps control of the match until Cesaro causes a distraction and Sheamus knees English in the head from behind. Cesaro tags in and works over English now. Sheamus tags back in and they both stomp on Aiden in the corner. The Bar exchanges more tags, and Cesaro keeps English grounded now with a chin lock. Sheamus comes back in and looks for a spear in the corner, but English dodges it and Sheamus crashes into the ring post. Cesaro and Rusev get the tags, and Rusev unloads with right hands on Cesaro. Rusev hits a splash in the corner and then a spinning heel kick. Cesaro tries to fight Rusev off, but Rusev catches him with a kick to the head for a two count. Rusev locks in the Accolade, but Sheamus breaks it up. Cesaro uppercuts Rusev back down, then Sheamus tags in and they hit a double DDT for a two count. Sheamus hits a tilt-a-whirl powerslam for another two count. Sheamus goes for a big boot on Rusev, but English runs in and takes the shot for Rusev. Rusev comes off the ropes with a big boot on Sheamus and he covers for the three count.

Winners: Rusev Day

– Lana steps in the ring to celebrate the win with Rusev and Aiden after the match. Rusev Day will now take on The New Day at Hell In A Cell for the Tag Titles. Rusev and Aiden talk some trash to The New Day at ringside at their broadcast table.

– R-Truth and Carmella come out singing R-Truth’s “What’s Up” song.

R-Truth vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas: The opening bell sounds and Almas immediately takes the fight to Truth and hits a series of strikes in the corner. Almas runs off the ropes and R-Truth catches him with a hurricanrana. Almas comes back with a springboard kick for a two count. Almas follows up with some knees to the head to keep Truth grounded. Truth fights back and Almas grabs on to the ropes, then Zelina Vega runs in the ring and distracts R-Truth. Carmella pulls Zelina outside, and Almas hits a cheap shot off the distraction and rolls up R-Truth for the three count.

Winner: Andrade “Cien” Almas

– Almas and Vega immediately head up the ramp as Truth gets to his feet in disbelief.

– Asuka and Naomi are backstage for an interview, and Naomi thanks Asuka for having her back last week. Naomi says Asuka feels the glow, but Asuka thinks she was asking her to “go.” Naomi explains her “glow” catch phrase, and they walk off together.

– Brie Bella comes out with Daniel Bryan, and our main event is up next.

Brie Bella vs. Maryse: Daniel Bryan and The Miz are both at ringside for this one. The opening bell sounds and Maryse avoids engaging early on by heading out to ringside repeatedly. Brie gets on a microphone and calls Maryse a coward. The Miz gets a microphone and yells at Brie for calling his wife a coward, and says Brie doesn’t deserve to be in the same ring as his wife. The Miz says neither Brie nor this city deserve to see this match with Maryse in it. The Miz declares that this match is over, and they’ll see Brie and Daniel at Hell In A Cell. The Miz and Maryse start walking off, but Brie goes and grabs Maryse and takes her back in the ring. Daniel chases off The Miz, while Maryse hits a cheap shot on Brie for a two count. Maryse wastes some time and Brie applies the Yes Lock. The Miz reaches in and pulls Brie out of the ring down to the ringisde floor, and the ref calls for the DQ.

Winner via DQ: Brie Bella

– Daniel Bryan charges at Miz and beats him down around ringside. They fight back into the ring, and Miz shoves Daniel into Brie at ringside, and Brie is hurt. As Daniel checks on Brie, The Miz grabs him from behind and throws him into the ring steps. Maryse beats down Brie at ringside while Miz takes care of Bryan. Maryse throws Brie back in the ring, but Brie tackles her and pummels on her. The Miz gets in the ring, but so does Bryan and he lays into Miz with a series of kicks in the corner. Miz dodges a shot from Bryan, so Brie hits Miz instead, and then Bryan clotheslines Miz out of the ring. Daniel and Brie lead the crowd in a “Yes” chant as Miz and Maryse retreat up the ramp. The announcers plug Hell In A Cell again, and Daniel and Brie pose in the ring as SmackDown goes off the air.

Tommaso Ciampa Comments On Being Left Off WWE 2K19 Roster

5

2K completed their roster reveal for the upcoming WWE 2K19 video game today. One notable omission was NXT Champion, Tommaso Ciampa. While the game’s downloadable content (DLC) has yet to be announced, Ciampa has seemingly been left off the game. Ciampa himself commented on the matter:

In a since-deleted tweet, Ciampa wrote, “@WWEGames had their final roster reveal for WWE2k19,” Ciampa Tweeted. “A lot of people are wondering why The Champ is not in the game. Well, it’s quite simple. I’m The Champ for a reason. I don’t lose. Not in real life. Sure as hell not in your fantasy world.”

Tommaso Ciampa WWE 2K19

It is entirely possible this is a marketing/troll job orchestrated to get more attention for the game. Ciampa has been mocking many things online as of late. He mocked star-based match ratings after his NXT title match with Aleister Black:

https://twitter.com/projectciampa/status/1022988360229384192?lang=en

He also released his own version of the PWI Top 500 list:

https://twitter.com/ProjectCiampa/status/1034908917367758848?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1034908917367758848%7Ctwgr%5E373939313b636f6e74726f6c%7Ctwcon%5Elogo&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sportskeeda.com%2Fwwe%2Fwwe-news-tommaso-ciampa-savagely-mocks-the-pwi-500-list

Ciampa even mocked the great NXT tradition of taking pictures with Triple H.

https://twitter.com/ProjectCiampa/status/1022626924923744264?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1022626924923744264%7Ctwgr%5E373939313b636f6e74726f6c%7Ctwcon%5Elogo&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ringsidenews.com%2F2018%2F07%2F27%2Ftommaso-ciampa-mocks-triple-hs-nxt-tradition%2F

It seems unlikely that Ciampa would actually have been left off the 2K roster this year. He was in the game last year and his character model would only need a little updating.

Renee Young Is The Fresh Voice RAW Needs

4

The September 10th edition of RAW featured Renee Young as the first woman to be a permanent member of the RAW broadcast team, putting her behind the same microphone used by such WWE commentator greats as Gorilla Monsoon, Jim Ross, Jesse” The Body” Ventura, Bobby Heenan, Jerry Lawler and even Vince McMahon himself. And I couldn’t be happier about it!

To qualify this; I spent 10+ years behind and in front of broadcast desks working in radio and TV news and talk shows. I learned from and saw how the greats of the industry did it and I can say without a doubt, there is a certain “it” factor to being a good broadcaster. It’s not just about being knowledgeable in what you’re talking about, it’s finding a connection with an audience and using it. A good broadcaster makes you feel like it’s just you and them in the room. Let me say, with all certainty, Renee Young is a good broadcaster.

Born in Toronto, Canada, Young (real name: Renee Paquette) had a brief flirtation with being an actress, but eventually became a host on The Score television network. On the Score, she hosted a show called Right After Wrestling (later renamed Aftermath) with Arda Ocal, Mauro Ranallo and former WWE referee Jimmy Korderas. She performed this and other hosting duties with The Score until signing with the WWE in 2012. It was easy to see that even then, Young had the spark and connection with the viewer that one needs to succeed.

The long list of men that have held the commentator position on WWE programming is like a who’s who of pro wrestling minds. Each one brought with them a signature tone, style and bucketful of terribly wonderful Dad Jokes to add colour and excitement to the matches we watched. Renee Young’s addition to the Commentator team is not important because she can perform like these legends. It’s important because she’s the exact opposite of them.

One of the biggest challenges the WWE faces these days is becoming stagnant. Recycled matches, a dependency on Part-Timers and Legends and storylines that seem to drag on and into nowhere are contributing factors to what makes RAW a difficult 3-hours to slog through on most occasions. Couple this with over 15 years of ear-fed commentary that, more often than not, takes away from the action instead of enhancing it, and the commentators or “hosts” of the show become a big part of the problem.

The commentary team on RAW saw a bit of a shot in the arm with the addition of Corey Graves, who’s proved himself to be quite capable behind the mic, but who’s role lately seems to have been relegated to snidely making fun of his co-hosts, while the oblivious Micheal Cole seems to be simply repeating things he’s told to say more often than not.

What Young brings to the table are three things:

  1. A woman’s perspective, which is hugely important as we see Women’s Wrestling taking more of a central role in the show (thank goodness!)
  2. A fresh, modern, voice, not just in opinion and comment, but also in tone, delivery and timbre. Her voice is strong, confident and stands out amongst the rest of the team. You NOTICE when she talks and thus, listen and are more engaged.
  3. The experience of being a capital-B Broadcaster. Much like Mauro Ranallo on NXT (who coincidentally worked with Young at The Score) she knows and understands delivery, connection and how to get her point across clearly and effectively.

In September 2013, Young was given a shot at being a full-time color commentator on NXT. This lasted for several months, and I was extremely impressed by her ability and found myself more engaged in matches and wanting to hear what she thought. Rene did not disappoint. Now, 5 years later, her addition to the RAW commentary team is an excellent move. Not only because she’s a woman and appeals to wider audience, but also because she’s good at what she does. Very good.

The Rock’s Daughter Training At WWE Performance Center

16

The Rock’s daughter, Simone Johnson, has previously expressed interest in pursuing a career in wrestling. According to a report from Pro Wrestling Sheet, the 17-year-old already attends training sessions at the WWE Performance Center.

Simone spoke to the Hollywood Reporter last year about wanting to pursue a career in wrestling. “It’s a sport that is unlike anything else in the world,” she said. “There’s just a certain amount of passion that every move and match requires, and that’s so admirable. It’s definitely something I’ve thought about and want to pursue.”

Simone Johnson and The Rock

Simone Johnson was named Golden Globes ambassador last year. When asked, however, she stressed a career in film isn’t something she’s currently interested in pursuing.

“As much as I love and admire the film industry,” she continued. “I don’t see myself pursuing a career in it at the moment. I plan to study business in college — NYU, hopefully — and after graduating, I want to pursue wrestling and eventually transition into talent management.”

In other family news, Simone Johnson’s Grandfather, Rocky Johnson, will be featured in a biopic on his life. The movie will be titled “Ring King”. There is no word on a release date or if any other members of the family will be involved, however.

Kevin Kelly Has Huge Praise for UK Based Star

1

New Japan Pro Wrestling commentator Kevin Kelly was recently in the UK for a run of Revolution Pro television tapings. The longtime play by play announcer will be joining Andy Boy Simmons when Rev Pro hits FreeSports later this month.

Kelly recently took to Twitter to heap praise on a certain star from the UK scene. El Phantasmo has been making waves on British shores over the past year and this culminated in a British J Cup win for the Canadian born star.

The New Japan commentator stated “Congratulations to @elpwrestling for all his success this week at @RevProUK events. Top guy and going to get even toppier?… wait, that’s not even a thing. Trust me, El Phantasmo is great!

Phantasmo has been performing for the likes of PROGRESS, Fight Club: Pro, DEFIANT, ATTACK!, Southside and Wrestling League. If you have not seen the high flying star then check out some of the on demand services from the aforementioned companies. Kelly may well be calling some of Phantasmo’s action in New Japan sometime soon.

Frontline Wrestling Unveil On Demand Service

0

Will Ospreay’s new promotion Frontline Wrestling appear to be going from strength to strength.

Frontline has new revealed their new On Demand streaming service via the Pivotshare platform. The service is available at a $4.99 per month cost and features the first two shows from the company. ‘Build Me An Empire’ and ‘S.P.I.R.I.T’ took place earlier this year and feature a stellar line up of talent. You can find more information via the tweet at the bottom of the page.

Bulld Me An Empire is certainly worth the cost alone. The main event featured an outrageous bout between Chris Ridgeway and Japan’s KENOH. Ridgeway is an accomplished ‘strong style’ combatant in his own right but this match at the top of the card will be the bout that catapults him into the upper echelons of both the UK scene and, hopefully, Japan (much like how Ospreay’s bout against Okada for Rev Pro got him on a plane going East). We spoke to Ospreay earlier this year and he discussed his want to bring ‘puroresu‘ to the United Kingdom, this big time main event and the reaction from the crowd in attendance seems to solidify that strong style/puroresu has truly arrived in Britain.

Scarlett Bordeaux Skipped Her Prom To Attend A Wrestling Show

8

Scarlett Bordeaux skipped her prom and went to an independent wrestling show in Chicago instead. It was an AAW show that some of her friends were into.

In her senior year of high school, Bordeaux says some of her friends were into going to independent wrestling shows. She didn’t know much about wrestling at the time, however.

“One day I was just like ‘can I just come with you guys?’ because I chose not to go to my prom,” Bordeaux said. “I was dating someone from out of state I was like ‘I can miss it it’s fine’. I decided to go to a wrestling show instead, it was AAW. I saw it, I loved it.”

Earlier this month Bordeaux turned some heads with her in-ring ability. In front of a packed Chicago crowd on Friday of All In weekend, Bordeaux delivered a Canadian Destroyer onto Trevor Lee.

Trained by Jimmy Jacobs and Truth Martini, Bordeaux is now a fixture on Impact Wrestling.

The International Smoke Show

Over the last year, Bordeaux has wrestled in Japan for Stardom and in Mexico for AAA. I had the chance to ask her about her experiences wrestling in both cultures on today’s Impact Wrestling media call.

Bordeaux mentioned the two styles are completely different and communication with other performers could be difficult. She would continue to say, however, that wrestling across the globe has given her perspective on wrestling’s “universal language.”

“I’ve never done the lucha style before, I didn’t speak Spanish,” Bordeaux continued. “But wrestling – you kind of realize when you are travelling the world that it really is a universal language.”

She also mentioned India as a country she enjoys performing in.

“I’m excited to try going to England and Australia because I know those two are also very different,” she continued. “Every little thing adds to my arsenal and makes me a better performer slowly.”

What Did Scarlett Bordeaux Say To Grado and Joe Hendry?

Previously on Imact Wrestling, Scarlett Bordeaux gave career advice to KM and Fallah Bah that turned out quite well for them. She did the same for Joe Hendry and Grado recently.

This week on Impact, Grado and Hendry are planning to give the Smoke Show a gift to show their appreciation.

Cody Shoots Back At Firing Squad

1

The civil war rages on within Bullet Club. With Cody and leader of the BC, Kenny Omega, having found common ground after their war at the G1 Special in San Francisco, things finally looked – as the Club are fond of saying – fine.

That didn’t last long, as the Guerrillas of Destiny (comprised that night by Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, and their father Haku) proceeded to attack their stablemates and proclaim themselves the Firing Squad.

The war of words between Tama Tonga and Cody continued today, with the latter responding to Tama’s expert baiting. The Tongan claimed that Bullet Club “belongs to New Japan – not ROH or anyone else.”

Cody’s Civil War

Cody, who was commanding his own civil war against leader, Omega, finally put aside his claim for leadership of the Club after their match up back in July – with the Firing Squad forming a common enemy within their own ranks for them to now turn their attention to, if they chose.

It’s unclear as to how this secondary Bullet Club civil war will transpire. Tama has had longstanding issues with the leadership and direction of the Bullet Club, taking offence to the The Elite existing within the faction at all.

Given the betrayal at the G1 Special and their use of social media to further the division, here’s hoping that the story and payoff are as developed as the recent Cody/Omega civil war.

What do you think? Did the Bullet Club need another civil war so soon? Who will win it this time? And who do you think is coming out on top in these Twitter exchanges?

Scott Steiner Insults Current WWE Product, Stephanie McMahon

9

Scott Steiner has never been one to mince his words, and this short interview with WhatCulture, captured during All In weekend at Starrcast, proves that all over again.

In just over four minutes, Steiner puts the current WWE product on blast, insults both Stephanie McMahon and Triple H, and expresses his amazement with All In’s success. That’s quite a lot of ground for Big Poppa Pump to cover in such a short period of time.

“Nobody Wants To Watch That Bulls**it”

When speaking on All In, Steiner couldn’t help but juxtapose its unmitigated success with the rise and popularity of the nWo during its peak.

“There was, like, two times since I’ve been wrestling, the last 25, 30 years when the nWo was hot, you know. I mean, that [the nWo’s fandom] was unprecedented, the sellouts, the record numbers of merch sales and everything. And like today, this is like the first time – I mean, they sold out in like 30 minutes. For an independent show, I’ve never heard of that before.”

The praise soon turned to bitter reflection, as Steiner then reflected the All In experience against the current WWE product.

“It just goes to show you nobody wants to watch that bulls**t that WWE puts out right now. You know, that product’s f*****g horrible.”

Steiner blamed WWE for neutering their own talent, claiming that the company “pigeon hole”s its superstars, lumbering them with “stupid characters.”

“They make everybody do the same interviews that they print out,” he stated. “You can’t expand, you know, be creative. It’s not what my picture of what wrestling was. And when things sell out like this, it proves that.”

Big Poppa Pump also claimed that his time with the company was “f*****g brutal,” before lambasting Stephanie McMahon, claiming that the WWE now has “one of the biggest c**** running it,” subsequently questioning her understanding and knowledge about wrestling.

Scott Steiner shot to fame tagging with his brother, Rick, as the Steiner Brothers. He would later go on to find singles success during the final years of WCW before a short stint in the WWE during 2002-2004.
