The Real Reason Solomon Crowe Requested His WWE Release

26

Sami Callihan, who was known as Solomon Crowe in NXT, was released from his WWE contract earlier this month. It now appears he requested the release so he could go out on his own and revamp his image.

According to Pro Wrestling Sheet, Callihan was unhappy with how he was progressing in NXT and the way WWE was using him. He eventually got frustrated and wanted to leave. Callihan reportedly wants to “reinvent his image on the independent scene as one of the best wrestlers in the world.”

Callihan reportedly left the company on good terms and the door was left open for a possible return in the future.

Mick Foley’s Son Dewey Joining WWE Creative Staff

70

Mick Foley has been very critical WWE’s creative direction in recent weeks, publicly grappling with the notion of completely giving up on watching the product. What Foley has failed to mention is that his son Dewey has secured a job with WWE’s writing staff.

According to a source close to the situation, Dewey, 23, will begin working with WWE’s creative team shortly after the holidays. He had been running a blog for WWE creative writing samples, which is now set to private.

Suddenly, Mick Foley’s public damnation of WWE creative suddenly takes on an entirely different perspective.

It’s worth noting that Foley’s daughter Noelle could also be working for WWE in the not so distant future, as there is talk of her becoming a backstage interviewer. During a recent interview with Justin Labar of Chair Shot Reality, Noelle noted that she has done some training in the ring but is focusing on other things.

Kevin Owens vs. Brock Lesnar Being Discussed For WrestleMania

82

Kevin Owens vs. Brock Lesnar is being discussed as a possible match for WrestleMania 32, according to former WWE writer Court Bauer on the latest episode of MLW Radio.

As result of the injuries plaguing the roster, WWE is reportedly starting from scratch with the WrestleMania card. Naturally, Brock Lesnar’s match is a top priority. Owens would get a huge rub by working against Lesnar at the biggest WrestleMania of all time, the promos between Owens and Paul Heyman would be off the charts and the match itself would be stiff as hell.

WWE already blew off Lesnar’s feud with The Undertaker and The Rock’s probably won’t be available for Mania, so Kevin Owens seems to be one of the best options available.

The other matches currently being considered include Roman Reigns vs. Triple H and The Undertaker vs. John Cena.

Comment below and tell us if you’d want to see Kevin Owens vs. Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 32.

Update On The Severity Of AJ Styles’ Injury, Styles Misses Another Booking

Former IWGP Champion AJ Styles missed yet another New Japan World Tag League tournament match today in Fukuoka, Japan. His team with Yujiro Takahashi forfeited their second match, this time to the team of Michael Bennett and Matt Taven.

Styles has been on the sidelines since last working on November 24th due to a bulging disc in his lower back. According to those in Japan, his injury appears to be very serious, with the description being that he seems to be in great pain with any movement.

AJ Styles went into the current tour injured after missing ROH bookings to rest up for the tour. The 38-year-old star has yet to return home, as he has major matches scheduled over the next several weeks. After the current NJPW tournament wraps up on December 9th, he has an ROH Title match against Jay Lethal booked for ROH Final Battle in Philadelphia, as well as an Intercontinental Title match against Shinsuke Nakamura at the NJPW Wrestle Kingdom event at the Tokyo Dome on January 4th.

Recently retired wrestling star PJ Polaco (Justin Credible) thinks that TNA needs to pounce on the fact that WWE’s fans are discouraged and viewership is sharply down. Mick Foley Elaborates On Why He’ll Continue Watching RAW After Monday’s Show

38

Mick Foley posted the following Facebook blog to elaborate on the tweets he sent out after watching Monday’s RAW, explaining that the show was good enough for him not to quit watching each week as he said he might do prior to last night’s show.

STICKING AROUND…at least for now

Yes, I was seriously contemplating taking WWE off of my viewing schedule.

At the end of last week’s post, I mentioned that I needed the company give me a reason to keep watching. Last night, they DID give me a few reasons. Here they are:

1) By allowing her to enter to her own music, and wear her #LegitBoss shirt, I received my first indication that the company may allow Sasha Banks to spread her wings, and fly.

2) I REALLY liked Charlotte’s subtle heel mannerisms, and slightly condescending tone toward Becky Lynch. Becky is an amazing talent, just looking for some character direction – and I think she may have found some of that last night.

3) I really thought that in the wake of last weeks disappointing ratings, that we would see a very Authority-heavy show. Remember Christopher Walken on Saturday Night Live – when his prescription for everything was “more cowbell”? That’s what I foresaw for last night’S WWE Raw – with “Authority” being the new cowbell. Instead, we saw the origin of a new faction, which could prove to be quite effective over time – the birth of The League of Nations.

Was it a perfect show? No. But I found it to be an enjoyable one – that didn’t make me feel penalized for being a wrestling fan. Sure, I want to see more Cesaro, Owens, etc – but WWE gave me enough to keep me around…at least for a while.

Luke Harper On The Wyatt Family Adding A Creepy Female, Getting Yelled At By Vince

45

WWE Superstar and Wyatt Family member Luke Harper recently appeared as a guest on Chris Jericho’s “Talk Is Jericho” podcast and spoke about getting yelled at by Vince McMahon, what he feels should be done with The Wyatt Family and more.

During the interview, The Wyatt Family member spoke about getting yelled at by Vince McMahon the night he won the I-C title due to not using a Southern accent in his pre-match promo.

“I won the Intercontinental title, I beat Ziggler for it. Yeah, I thought it was great. I thought everything was good. [I] came to the back and Vince yelled at me because I didn’t speak in a southern accent, so [it] kind of put a damper on things for a little bit.” Harper added, “I had to say, ‘I’m a team player’ [in the prematch promo], but I had to say it southern because that was his vision of me and it might still be. I hope not. Yes, and our vision of it is our people come from everywhere. [Bray Wyatt’s] message is nationwide. He’s from the bayou, but us, his followers, aren’t necessarily. We kind of pick and choose where he got us.”

He also spoke about his feeling that he didn’t get a fair run with the Intercontinental Title.

“I was pissed because I thought I didn’t get a fair run with [the title], really. I hadn’t really done anything with it.” Harper continued, “I thought ‘this is bulls–t.’ So I remember talking to Dolph and I said, ‘hey man, I want to do something special here because I’m pissed.’ It was in Cleveland [Ohio], his hometown, so it was, like, again, a perfect storm of stuff.”

Harper also revealed some advice he received from John Cena after he lost the I-C strap.

“I was told by one of the top guys in the [professional wrestling] business, John Cena, that if you have an at bat and you hit a double or something or you hit a single, you’ll get another at bat, so that [has] always been my mindset now. When I get the ball, do what I can with it. Control what I can control. And if I can go out there and do something special, then, that makes them happy and it makes everybody happy, I’ll get another at bat.”

Finally, Harper touched on what he feels should be done with the Wyatt Family faction, agreeing with Jericho that they should add a “creepy girl” to the mix.

“New blood. I’ve always said that, I thought with a cult like that, we should always have kind of [new members joining] and [grow] bigger.” Harper continued, “I think [adding a woman] gives us more diverse things and more ways to go instead of just saying, ‘hey, we’re going to beat you up.'”

Brad Maddox Confirms What Got Him Released By WWE

22

Former WWE Superstar Brad Maddox appeared on the Busted Open SiriusXM Radio show on Tuesday and spoke about his release from the company last week. Here are some quick highlights from the Busted Open crew:

Lana Ambushed On RAW With Line About ‘Going All The Way’ With Ziggler

24

Last night on RAW, Lana returned and reunited with her real-life fiancé, Rusev on MizTV. Their segment was interrupted by Ryback, who delivered a line about Dolph Ziggler informing him that he “went all the way” with Lana during their time as a [fictional] couple.

According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Rusev and Lana were not told about that line in advance. It was in the script for RAW, but Lana was caught off guard by it in what Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez called a “double cross.”

As we’ve been reporting for several weeks, there’s been a lot of heat on Lana for revealing on social media that she and Rusev were still an item while they were at odds on television, as well as her social media beef with Paige.

WWE Network Adds Mid-South & Smoky Mountain Wrestling

6

On the heels of Jim Crockett Promotions era (1985-1988) NWA World Championship Wrestling episodes being uploaded to WWE Network last week, it looks like there’s a lot more to come. About 40 minutes after tonight’s episode of Monday Night Raw went off the air, the WWE Network Updates Twitter account started to catch uploads of episodes of Smoky Mountain Wrestling from 1994 and Mid-South Wrestling from 1984. Only a few episodes of each are up so far, but if other recent TV show uploads in “The Vault” are any indication, there’s more to come, with gaps being filled along the way.

Mid-South Wrestling was “Cowboy” Bill Watts’ promotion in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas, which ran from 1979 to 1987. Having bought out former boss/business partner Leroy McGuirk, he soon brought in the Junkyard Dog and the territory caught fire. Their TV was considered by many to be the best of the era, with great wrestling, episodic storytelling, and an emphasis on credible booking.

Smoky Mountain Wrestling launched as a promotion in late 1991, with TV starting in 1992, before closing in November 1995. Jim Cornette ran the promotion with financing from record producer Rick Rubin (who was a huge fan of southern style wrestling), running shows primarily in east Tennessee and other parts of the old Southeastern Championship Wrestling/Continental territory. Like Mid-South, it was considered to have some of the best TV of the era, with Cornette booking the shows as something like a cross between Mid-South and the Memphis wrestling that he grew up on.

Recap Of Mick Foley On Steve Austin’s Podcast (Updated)

18

Mick Foley appeared on the Steve Austin Show podcast this week to discuss his frustration with the current state of WWE, how to improve the business, The Authority, the value in making mistakes, Dusty Rhodes, why he wants to see The Shield reunite and much more. Here are some highlights:

– Austin started off the show telling Mick that he’s enjoyed his Facebook post about what’s wrong with today’s WWE and some suggestions of how to turn the product around. Mick said sometimes he has to fight the urge to vent on social media, but he had to take a stand this time. He’s on the verge of not watching RAW anymore. Foley watches RAW with his kids and lately it’s just been unbearable. He’s as big a fan as anybody and if he’s getting turned off, it’s probably indicative of what the larger audience is feeling.

Foley has a hard time buying into The Authority. He is concerned that WWE is going to react to low viewership by doubling down on WWE’s strongest personalities (Triple H & Stephanie) but they’re not the ones with their names on the marquee. The Authority isn’t wrestling night after night on the road. Austin complimented Triple H and Stephanie, but feels that it’s time to wind down The Authority angle. It’s the same old stuff. Austin wants to see the heels get theirs and some back to basics law and order.

– Mick says the ‘danger’ of bringing up good ideas is that once the idea gets out there, WWE wants to go in a different direction to surprise people. He feels Reigns joining The Authority at Survivor Series would have made the most sense and would have been a much better scenario than what we got. Foley says WWE is trying to put Roman Reigns in the Steve Austin anti-Authority role and that doesn’t work for everybody. He wishes he could speak to Reigns and talk some sense into him. Austin asks him if he thinks Reigns is over-acting and relying and going through the motions of ‘what a rising top guy should be.’ Foley basically agreed, saying Reigns is a good guy, a hard worker and deserves a top spot, but needs to work on his act. Foley puts over Reigns as being a handsome, talented guy with a lot of potential but his current role is just not working. Foley thinks there’s money in a Shield reunion, there’s money in Reigns vs. Rollins.

– Austin asks Mick if he thinks the talent is being over-coached and over-produced. Foley talks about the art of the promo and how the best promos work off bullet points and allow the talent’s personality to shine. The freedom to improvise no longer exists and it completely handcuffs the talent. Talent should not be afraid to make mistakes. If you try to eliminate the chance of disasters (ie. a promo bombing), you also take away the chance that something really special will take place. Foley referenced Dusty Rhodes how great he was on the mic. He mentioned Dusty’s “Hard Times” promo. He said that if Dusty had handed the transcript of that promo in to a high school English teacher, he’d get a C+. But the way Dusty delivered it, it’s magic. Austin said when you try too hard to be “what they want you to be,” you can’t be what makes you special. They reminisced about their time on top and the freedom they had to experiment.

– Austin says the WWE product is so slick that it feels like the spontaneity has been completely lost. There’s no longer a feeling that ‘anything can happen.’ Both guys agreed that WWE has a tremendous talent roster right now. Foley talked again about Sasha Banks’ match with Becky Lynch last week on RAW. Everything they did in the ring was good, but 4 minutes later it was like the match never happened because there were no ramifications. Mick said, imagine if WWE had booked their show like this during the Monday Night Wars. Austin said he enjoys watching the Divas who have been called up from NXT, but thinks they are being micromanaged on the main roster. Austin vented about Sasha and Becky only getting 4 minutes, questioning, why WWE even puts the match out there. Austin puts over Sasha Banks, Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Bayley as being classic pro wrestlers that are being stifled by WWE’s bad booking. There’s no heat so the matches mean nothing.

– Both guys put over Sasha Banks as being a great worker with an original character but (recurring theme here) she’s being completely held down by the booking.  Foley said, “She’s living the dream, she’s got this character that works and I think she’s being messed with. If you have someone who is there, who is firing on all cylinders .. and I’m talking to Vince, leave her alone and let her do her thing. You’re 70, Vince. She’s 23. You don’t speak to everybody out there. Just because you don’t get it doesn’t mean it’s not there to be gotten. You have people chanting We Want Sasha, it’s not without reason. Please, Mr. McMahon. Please leave her alone. Let her do her thing. If they want her, give her to them. Let her do her thing. You’re looking for faces, future faces of the company. Here’s one of them. It makes me sad to see someone work so hard, who is there and is being led in different directions.”

– Austin asked Mick if his working punches were stiff. Foley said not as stiff as Vader’s (because everything Vader did hurt), but Austin’s punches would hurt more when Austin was making his comeback during a match and got caught up in the moment. Foley said he once asked Triple H what the main difference was working with Austin and The Rock. Hunter instantly responded that Rock’s punches didn’t hurt and Austin’s hurt like hell. They both had a laugh.

– Austin asked Foley why Vader came in to WWE walking on eggshells. Vader worked with Shawn Michaels when he first joined WWE and got a lot of heat for working stiff with Michaels. Austin said he doesn’t think Vader ever recovered from that. Vader was upset early on because at the time in WWE, heels had to be booked as cowards. Foley put Vader over as a solid worker and being great and ‘making guys’ because he was such a strong heel. He thinks that when Vader got to WWE, he had so many people in his ear, so many people trying to tell him to be a heel, that he was baffled. Vader hated running away from opponents, but that’s how WWE booked heels back then. Foley said Vader is in phenomenal shape and doesn’t get his due as being one of the great heels of his generation. Austin agreed he was great.

– Austin asked Foley if he thinks today’s WWE roster is walking on eggshells. Foley said yes, he thinks so. You’ve got to get in your mandatory cool moves and it’s really hard to go out there and assert yourself with other people’s ideas (writers). Foley says the over-scripting leads to wrestlers not having to constantly think about and develop their characters. Back in his day, he would constantly be working on his promos. Foley told a story from a few years ago when he bombed on stage during the early days of his stand-up comedy career and it wound up being a great experience for him. Guys today are just memorizing and don’t have to think for themselves. Austin asked how to change the situation. Foley says he knows the McMahons are very busy. He has offered multiple times to come in and pitch ideas. He doesn’t think the McMahons like his ideas, but he would love to visit WWE headquarters and work as a consultant of sorts. More talk of everything being over-scripted and the performers not even having the option to think of themselves or make mistakes.

Teddy Long On His Last WWE Appearance, His Infamous Dance & More

3

Former WWE SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long recently spoke with the folks at The Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling podcast. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On making his last appearance on WWE TV at the Smackdown 15th Anniversary:

“For me there was no prepping that day. Sometimes there is usually a rehearsal as to what we are going to do or go over things and make sure everybody is right. Vince always knew that I’ve had rehearsals but he always knew that he didn’t have to give them to me he only had to give me what he wanted done and I would always be able to get out there and do it. I had been gone for a year and when I went out there it was like I never left. I always took my job real serious and when I think back to that 15th Anniversary I knew exactly where I was and I was back in the hands of Vince McMahon and you don’t play around up there, you do your work, do your job and you keep Vince happy and that’s what I did.”

On being the face of Smackdown as the GM for nearly 6 years straight:

“It meant a lot to me because I had been in Professional Wrestling for over 30 years and basically the longer you stay in this business the more you learn and the more experience you get. When I was in the NWA and WCW I had a few guys like Butch Reed and Ron Simmons (who were the first Afro-American tag team champions) and when you are always trying to get a break it looks like there is always something somewhere that just kind of stops you. That’s what happened with me in the NWA and WCW, every time we would get something good somebody would try to break it up or wanted to do something else or break the team up. I was able to go to New York and work for Vince and once he found out what I could do then he was real pleased with me. He was the only person that ever gave me a break and I wanted to reward him for giving me that because I always wanted to show people that said I didn’t have any talent, that I had talent and Vince McMahon helped me prove that. My thing up there with him is that I am going to make this work and whatever he wants me to do I am going to do that and I am going to portray myself.”

On the origin of the word “playa” and the Teddy Long “dance”:

“My character was basically just me. The word “playa” I just started saying it around the house. I had this big dog and I used to call him all the time, his name was Balls but I started calling him “Playa” around the house and I just took that to TV and started using it. Another example is the dance that I do. A lot of people think that is something big, well it’s big to me because of my Grandson. We bought him this little walker and every time he would get in that he would just bounce up and down kind of like the dance so I started doing the dance on TV because I wanted my Grandson to watch it and let him know I was doing his dance. So that’s the inside secret about how the dance came about. When you can be yourself you can be more relaxed when you are out there trying to portray a character and you are trying to get somebody over, well I wasn’t trying to get anyone over but me. I was able to adapt and I was able to learn Vince McMahon’s way. That’s another thing, if you learn Vince McMahon’s way you will be there for a long time. I was able to do all of that with the help of God.”

On the running “tag team match” joke with him on Smackdown:

“I never really thought about it and there was never any thought behind it. I was told what to do, I was told we were going to turn this into a tag team match and I just started doing it on my own in giving the emphasis on “tag team match” and doing my thing. But it actually got over and is all over YouTube. Everybody wants to see me make that tag team match.”

On finding the scenario comical after a while and WWE saving the singles matches for RAW:

“Whatever you are told to do is serious. It’s strictly serious with Vince, you don’t laugh or play around so whenever they said tag team match I said well I am going out there and making this the best tag team match and better than the other ones I made. That’s the way I always thought about it just being better than the last time. Stuff like that was probably discussed in a production meeting and don’t get me wrong I had been invited to some of the production meetings but that is voluntarily if you wanted to go. I didn’t really want to go to those because I didn’t really want to know what was happening.”
