EDITORIAL: WWE Needs An Overhaul

48

The following editorial reflects the opinions of the author.

Well, we are at an interesting crossroads in the life of the WWE right now. As we are all aware,  WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Seth Rollins, has been injured. While in the midst of his reign as champ, Mr. Architect is sidelined with a torn ACL, and will be out for 6 to 9 months.

While the way he was being booked is questionable, what’s not in question was the roll that he was on. He was the main event, the champion, the focal point of the show, and putting on the matches of his career against high caliber, main event talent. He is someone who took the ball and ran with it.

That said, again, we are at a crossroads. Your champion is injured, your other top talents are either injured, as well (Sting, Randy Orton), or off doing their own things outside of the WWE (Cena, Lesnar). Now, WWE, you are scrambling to find yourself a new “man”, the guy that you can trust to carry your show. Tonight marks the start of a tournament to crown a new champion at Survivor Series.

Here’s where we find ourselves in a pickle. I hate being the guy that calls back to the Attitude Era, but hey, that truly was the pinnacle of wrestling.

Let’s take all the vulgarity aside. Let’s take the cursing, violence, sexuality, and blood out of consideration. What is the one thing that the Attitude Era had that the current does not?

Answer: Hungry, talented people that had the goods, and were ready to reach for the stars.

Let’s be honest, we all hated and cringed at Vinnie Mac’s ridiculous Millenials comment during the Stone Cold podcast. However, let us also not kid ourselves: his point was not far off of the mark. There are many talented individuals waiting in the wings. However, which of them is truly ready and up to the challenge of carrying the company? Ah, I can already hear the angry gnashing of your keyboards. Hang with me, here.

During the Attitude Era, there were countless wrestlers who were on the cusp of the main event, at any given time. Every title was important. Every wrestler was important. Every storyline was important. WWE was not afraid to take the chance on a guy to either sink or swim on their own merits. The importance of the midcard had just as much emphasis as the WWE Title. They managed to build up every single wrestler, no matter at which level, to be true superstars.

That said, this current lack of main event caliber is not necessarily the fault of the wrestlers, themselves.

No, the reason that the WWE is scrambling, the reason that no one is at the ready, the reason that no one is capable of being at the main event, falls upon one person. It lies solely at the feet of Vince McMahon, Jr. himself.

The WWE has spent so much time building one wrestler at a time to the main event level, that it forgoes all other talent, regardless of actual readiness and capabilities.

Kevin Owens is the Intercontinental Champion. A title and role that, at one point, held more importance than the WWE title and champion. Does that matter now? Sure doesn’t feel like it.

Does it feel like the U.S. Title matters now that it’s been taken off of the WWE Golden Boy, Cena?

There are many superstars who, if given opportunity to build themselves up, could be there. The abilities are there. Wrestling today us inarguably more athletic and competitive than it was during the Attitude Era. I’m not going to get into the who’s and why’s, because that’s all subjective to who you’d personally like to see given the push. However, the WWE has not given anyone, outside of a select few, that opportunity.  And it’s been that select few for a very long time now, and we’re all a bit bored with it. I believe that this is something we can all agree on.

We are at this interesting crossroads because now WWE is being forced to give out that opportunity to the talent. Here is the chance to allow someone to sink or swim, to reach for the brass rings, and all those other cliches. It’s time for the WWE to overhaul their thinking. Sadly, it comes at the expense of the incredible Seth Rollins.

Maybe, hopefully, now Vince will use this unfortunate set of circumstances to realize that there needs to be a top to bottom importance set on every person backstage. There are three hours every Monday, and two hours every Thursday. There is no excuse for every superstar to not be given ample time to get themselves over.

I guess we’ll find out who the WWE and Vince give the ball to later this month. Or, worse yet, if we’re going to fall into the same rut of predictability.

Jim Ross Blog: WWE Title Tourney On RAW, Seth Rollins’ Injury & More

6

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross updated his official website blog at JRsBarBQ.com on Monday. Below are some of the highlights.

On the WWE title kicking off on RAW tonight:

“WWE will apparently start their tournament tonight (Monday) to determine who will become the new, WWE Worlds Champion on the cusp of Seth Rollins needing reconstructive knee surgery to repair his ACL and MCL. Dr. James Andrews will oversee the surgery that will apparently take place Tuesday.

The key to this tournament will be making sure that all the top stars that can be made available are in the tournament because in all reality who would NOT want to be the next WWE Title holder? With that said I’d leave John Cena off and perhaps even the Undertaker even though the Deadman would be an intriguing entrant. Obviously and unfortunately Randy Orton will not be in the tourney due to a shoulder issue and one has to wonder if the Authority does not ‘invite’ Brock Lesnar to compete in it as well.”

On Seth Rollins being on the sidelines:

“No matter what is done in the tournament and because the entire presentation is so subjective, it seems likely that no matter what WWE does to address Rollins untimely injury that they will be damned if they do and damned if they don’t because so many die hard fans have a definitive view on how all this must go down where, as I’ve said repeatedly, there are several ways to skin this cat, so to speak.”

On the opportunity new talent has in the WWE title tournament matches:

“I’d love to see the talents take these matches extremely seriously and approach their matches with great focus considering that they’ll be competing to become the top guy in WWE as the WWE Champion. This is also an opportunity for a new start ala a 16th seed i n arch Madness to get hot at the right time and shock the world by winning the WWE Title only to become the #1 enemy of the Authority who wants a champion that they control.”

WWE Championship Tournament To Begin Tonight On RAW

74

The updated RAW preview over at WWE.com includes some new information regarding the tournament to crown a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

When WWE originally announced the tournament, the wording indicated that the tournament would take place over the course of one night at Survivor Series, similar to 1998’s “Deadly Game” Survivor Series tournament. A reliable source in WWE informed us the format of the tournament would be different than what WWE originally announced and that has turned out to be true.

First round tournament matches will kick off tonight on RAW and will continue later this week on SmackDown.

No word yet on how many Superstars will be included or how many of the tournament matches will be taking place at Survivor Series, but we’re sure to get more details tonight on RAW.

“Two nights after the anticipated WWE World HeavyweightChampionship clash between Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins was made official for Survivor Series, The Architect tore his right ACL, MCL and medial meniscus and, as first reported by ESPN, Rollins will be out of action for six to nine months.

As a result, a tournament will begin tonight, and continue on SmackDown, to crown a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion at Survivor Series. Who will compete for the illustrious prize? Will Roman Reigns, who earned the right to challenge Rollins two weeks ago on Raw, once again claw his way to the title that has eluded him since WrestleMania? Expect more news on Survivor Series’ tournament to determine a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion on Raw.”

Paige Talks About Reaction To Her Recent “F-Bomb,” Possibility Of More Brits In WWE

12

Paige recently spoke with talkSPORT while on the current WWE U.K. tour about the possibility of more Brits joining WWE and her recent “F-Bomb” controversy. Here’s what she said about:

On the possibility of more Brits joining WWE:

“There are girls who I really love who are in Bellatrix. There’s Sammi Baynz and Liberty and endless amounts of wrestlers I grew up with. The more Brits the better. There’s only a handful of us [in WWE at the moment] so the more the merrier! But there is a cut off point. They can’t be stealing my spotlight!”

On WWE officials being upset about her recent “F-Bomb” controversy:

“There was no fallout. I’m very loose with my tongue sometimes and I say things I don’t really mean. But you know what, as soon as I was on there, it was ‘Eff you, Paige.’ Well, eff you back! And that was it. There was no fallout, there was no nothing. You know how the internet goes – they take something and make it huge. They don’t know nothin’! They’ punished me by letting me go on Conan, yeah. Ugh!”

Hulk Hogan Praises Kevin Owens, Offers Advice To Breakout Wrestling Stars

13

WWE Hall Of Famer Hulk Hogan recently spoke with Radio Yorkshire to promote his upcoming Sheffield Arena appearance on November 14, 2015. Below are some of the highlights.

On seeing something in Kevin Owens immediately, particularly because of his old school psychology:

“Well, I hate to brag about it, but I’m the first one to point the finger at Kevin Owens. I saw him on NXT, like his second match, and saw him just chop and beat and grind and beating his guy down and doing it the old school way and really understanding how to get heat, doing it the old school way and I said, ‘that’s the guy’. I said, ‘that’s the guy. I don’t care if he looks like a wrestler [or] looks like an ice cream salesman. I don’t care. That’s the guy.'”

On advice for breakout wrestling stars:

“Keep their eyes wide open, keep their ears wide open, and tape on their mouth and learn this business the right way. And then, the business will take care of you. You won’t have to fight so hard to make the money and to make it. Keep your mouth shut and you understand what’s going on, then the business will take care of you. That’s my advice.”

Jim Ross Q&A: WWE Holding Back Talent, Long Title Reigns & More

5

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated the Q&A section on his website. Here are some highlights from this latest batch:

On wrestlers having long title reigns:

“I think that long runs as a champion is more impressive than winning and losing a title multiple times. It seems to me that it’s more challenging to hold a title over a long haul than to hold it a few weeks/months at a time before winning and losing it over and over again.”

His favorite pro wrestling memorabilia:

“Stone Cold’s boots that he won his first WWE Title in are right up there. Plus, Wrestlemania worn attire by Undertaker, HBK and HHH…John Cena’s title belt and game worn shoes, a Rock shirt he wore on TV, and a pair of red, patent leather boots signed and worn by Ric Flair would all be on the list.”

If WWE purposely holds back talent so they can get over organically:

“Think about it… does it make any common sense or is it logical to creative an environment for anyone in one’s company to NOT be successful? Why would any company want to be LESS successful?”

Buff Bagwell saying that JR made it hard for him & Booker T after their infamous RAW match:

“My memories of those days are different than Mark’s. I explain on this week’s Ross Report podcast at podcastone.com & iTunes. Check it out. Free download.”

Update On WWE’s New Working Relationship With ESPN

1

Expect to see a lot more from WWE’s new partnership with ESPN in the coming months.

Over the summer, ESPN gave WWE a lot of mainstream attention by covering SummerSlam like a big sporting news. ESPN’s SportsCenter now has a weekly segment featuring WWE highlights and it was ESPN that broke the news of Seth Rollins missing 6-9 months due to injury and forfeiting the WWE Championship.

ESPN breaking WWE news is apparently part of the working relationship between the companies, as confirmed by Court Bauer of MLW Radio and Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Live. Previously WWE had worked with other outlets like TMZ to get big stories out to the public.

Aside from the SportsCenter segments and breaking news stories, ESPN will also be providing extensive coverage leading up to WrestleMania 32 in April 2016.

Daniel Bryan Says WWE Stars Battle Overexposure, Talks Being On The Sidelines

28

WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan spoke with The Statesman in India while in the country doing some promotional work for WWE. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On WWE stars facing potential overexposure:

“Now, what we see is a three hour RAW and two hour SmackDown. While the previous generation’s struggle was getting exposure, we battle overexposure. So, the ones who handle overexposure the best and manage to not get the fans bored are the ones who end up wrestling for years. They know how to interact with people in all the settings, so it’s just natural that they become popular.”

On working with Kane:

“Literally, working with Kane was one of the finest parts of my career. It took me to the next level. People couldn’t wait to see us together on TV because we were really entertaining. He has wrestled for a while and he has been wrestling for a long time, with all the great guys, including The Rock, Steve Austin, so it was a great learning experience. Kane is a wonderful human being. He is a pleasure to be around.”

On the frustration of being on the sidelines right now:

“My wife is a wrestler, so she is on the ring, and I am just sitting, it is difficult… when I am upset, when I am angry, wrestling was always there as an outlet.. I could go, drop and kick… you can call your mom and you can call your sister… but sometimes you just need a physical outlet… I don’t know how to cope with this situation.”

Sgt. Slaughter On 2016 WWE Hall Of Fame, Jake Roberts Documentary & More

1

WWE Hall Of Famer Sgt. Slaughter recently spoke with SACurrent.com.

On who he would like to see inducted into the 2016 class of the WWE Hall Of Fame in April:

“I’m hoping the [Fabulous] Freebirds might get in. I know all the Von Erichs might be in already, I believe. There are so many great superstars that came out of Texas. It’s fun for me not to know. I want to be surprised. I want to be excited just like everybody else. It’s one of my favorite nights of the whole year to go to the Hall of Fame induction ceremony.”

On if he thinks the message about struggling with addiction in the new Jake Roberts documentary is an important one to tell:

“I think it’s important for Jake to tell his story. A lot of people didn’t know what happened to him and how it happened. He’s one of the better characters and performers we had. He kind of just fell off the map. I haven’t seen the documentary myself, but I’m looking forward to seeing it. I’ve run into him a couple of times and he is the same guy. He still rags on me because I [participated] in some of his first matches. He told me I made him do things he had never done before in the ring. He just smiles and grins about it.”

On if it’s a good time to be in WWE:

“It’s a good time to be in the WWE and a good time to say you’re a part of it as a legend and as someone in the Hall of Fame. People respect you for the road you paved to keep it going. I always get the chance to thank the talent of today for all their hard work because they continue what we set out to do. Now, here we are at Wrestlemania 32.”

Seth Rollins Undergoing Knee Reconstruction Surgery On Tuesday

20

Seth Rollins was interviewed by WWE.com about his knee injury and the WWE championship situation. He confirmed that the injury happened during the sunset flip/powerbomb spot in the match with Kane in Dublin and he landed on the inside of his right foot instead of flat with his feet and that’s when his knee gave out. He revealed that he will be getting knee reconstruction surgery on Tuesday.

“You know, overall, I think I’m in a pretty good spot,” Rollins said. “Physically, my knee doesn’t hurt. Like, one thing people don’t understand, a common question is, “How much pain are you in?” The ligaments don’t have nerve endings, so, that’s a good thing and a bad thing, but I don’t feel any pain, it’s just a lot of instability in the knee capsule. So, I’m doing a lot of compression to kind of reduce the swelling and stuff like that. Emotionally … could be better. Obviously it’s a tough spot to be in. I’m mostly just looking forward to getting the surgery done and getting better every day.”

He didn’t mention how long he’d be out of action, but with this type of injury you can expect him to be out until after WrestleMania.

Two Big Matches WWE Is Planning For WrestleMania 32 Revealed

101

WWE is currently planning The Undertaker’s match for WrestleMania 32. PWInsider reports that the company is trying to put together a match between the Deadman and John Cena. If the match goes through as planned, it will be one of the two top matches at the company’s biggest PPV of the year. The other big match in the planning stages is The Rock vs. Triple H.

There’s no word on how the WWE Championship will fit in at WrestleMania, or if it will be defended in either of those potential matches. The current odds-on favorite to win the title at Survivor Series is Roman Reigns.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reported Saturday that WWE’s original plans for Cena and ‘Taker had been changing throughout the week. He also noted, “There are ‘Mania plans in place, but Seth Rollins’ injury changes at least two matches.”

WrestleMania 32 takes place on April 3, 2016, at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
