Movie About The Murders Of Luchadores Screening On Festival Circuit

4

The website for the Toronto International Film Festival has an entry from a new wrestling-related movie titled “Bleak Street” or “La Calle De La Amargura.” It premiered at the festival last week. The movieis based on the 2009 murders of Alberto and Alejandro Jiménez, a pair of brothers and mini luchadores best known as La Parkita (mini La Parka) and Espectrito Jr. Women posing as prostitutes lured them to a hotel room where they drugged the brothers’ drinks and intended to rob them while they were unconscious. Not accounting for their size relative to the men they normally targeted, the men overdosed and died. Police tracked down the two women, who were convicted a year later and each sentenced to 47 years in prison.

The film festival’s site summarizes the plot as follows:

The 2009 deaths of fraternal wrestlers La Parkita and Espectrito Jr. made headlines all over Mexico. These miniluchadores — little people who function as mascots for their hulking counterparts — were drugged by two women in a Cuauhtémoc hotel. The women only meant to knock out the brothers and take their money, but the doses were misjudged, and the robbery turned into murder.

As reimagined by scenarist Paz Alicia Garciadiego, Ripstein’s wife and long-time collaborator, this sensationalistic news item becomes a platform for a series of engrossing character studies through which we get to know the brothers and their two killers. Sketching the events just before and after that fateful night in the hotel, the film conducts a wry examination of Mexico City’s marginalized, whether they be exploited entertainers with threadbare costumes or aging sex workers trying to earn enough to support their dependents.

The Hollywood Reporter reviewed the movie after the Venice Film Festival, lauding the cinematography but not necessarily the character building in th writing.

The Wyatt Family, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose & Randy Orton Kick Off RAW

The post-Night Of Champions edition of WWE RAW kicks off with The Wyatt Family cut-in immediately happening, followed by the lights going out and Bray Wyatt making his way to the ring holding his lantern and being accompanied by his Wyatt Family members Braun Strowman and Luke Harper.

The music fades but the lights stay extremely dim as The Wyatt Family are in the ring now. Bray starts off by addressing Roman Reigns, calling him a fool for attempting to run from his destiny. He continues to talk about The Wyatt Family’s destruction of Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho at last night’s pay-per-view.

Before Wyatt can gloat or talk anymore trash, he is cut off by the theme song of Roman Reigns. With that said, Reigns — by himself — makes his way through the crowd as he heads down to the ring.

The fans chant “Roman Reigns! Roman Reigns!” as he enters the ring with a mic. Reigns says it’s not about Roman Reigns, it’s about Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt. He tells Wyatt to send Strowman and Harper “back to the swamp,” claiming then we will see who makes it out of Laredo, Texas tonight, the site of tonight’s RAW.

As Wyatt, off-mic, explains why it’s a dumb idea, Reigns pulls his punk card by saying they don’t need a referee, they don’t even need to have a match. He suggests they just have a fight, so he drops his microphone and stares the trio down.

Wyatt sends Strowman and Harper out of the ring and he and Reigns immediately start trading punches. Finally, Reigns gets the better of the exchanges, including flooring Wyatt with a Superman punch. As Reigns has Wyatt down and pounding on him, Strowman and Harper hit the ring and attack Reigns.

As they prepare to beat him down some more, Dean Ambrose’s them hits. Ambrose charges to the ring as Strowman tries to meet him half way up the ramp. Ambrose runs right past him, hits the ring and takes out Harper. He then hits a dive through the ropes, crashing onto Strowman on the floor, but Strowman still didn’t budge. Ambrose goes back into the ring, runs and dives through the ropes onto him on the floor again, but again Strowman won’t go down. Ambrose hops on Strowman’s back, but Braun just walks around with him on the floor and eventually slams him down.

Meanwhile, Ambrose and Harper are fighting on one side while Strowman is working over Reigns. Ambrose, now with Harper out of the picture, heads over to help Reigns with Strowman. Strowman gets the better of him too. Now The Wyatt Family members are in firm control as the fans chant “Y2J! Y2J!”

As The Wyatt Family licks their chops and prepares to further punish the already down and out Reigns and Ambrose, out of nowhere, Randy Orton’s theme hits. “The Viper” sprints to the ring and starts taking out The Wyatt Family members one man at a time. He back-suplexes Harper through an announce table. He fires away at Strowman with punches now but a Strowman headbutt slows Orton down. Strowman throws Orton back in the ring and goes in after him.

Strowman waits for Orton to get back to his feet, only for Ambrose to come off the top rope with a flying dropkick. Strowman still didn’t go down. And another. He still didn’t go down. Finally, Reigns hits a Superman punch that knocks Strowman over the top and out to the floor, but in old school Undertaker style, Strowman landed on his feet. The Wyatt Family retreats up the ramp as Reigns, Ambrose and Orton stare down The Wyatt Family from inside the ring.

Announcers Hype Some Night Of Champions Outcomes

On that note, we shoot to the announce table where Michael Cole, JBL and Byron Saxton, who officially introduce us to the show and then introduce some video highlights of Seth Rollins’ two title matches at last night’s WWE Night Of Champions pay-per-view in Houston, including what went down with Sheamus and Kane after his match with Sting.

Backstage: Corporate Kane & Seth Rollins

Backstage, we see Rollins outside a dressing room. He barges in thinking he’s going to talk to Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, only to see Kane from behind in a suit with his regular short hair. Rollins, in mid-sentence, began talking about how we need to come up with a plan after what happened last night.

Once Kane turns around, Rollins seems confused. Kane asks what they need to figure out a plan for. He insists on playing dumb, pretending tonight is his first night back at work, as if “The Demon Kane” or “Masked Kane” is a completely different person. Before Rollins leaves, Kane tells him that Rollins vs. Cena rematch for the U.S. Championship is scheduled for tonight. Rollins just says, “right. right…” and then walks off confused. On that note, we head to our first commercial break of the evening.

Sting Released From The Hospital, Manager Issues Statement

37

Sting’s manager, Steve Martinez, has issued a statement about his client’s rumored neck injury via the official, verified “The Real Sting” Facebook page:

“As many of you may already know, Sting is undergoing treatment for the injuries he sustained in last night’s match with Seth Rollins. Doctors will continue to evaluate his condition, but he is a man of remarkable health and resiliency, especially at his age and with all he’s endured throughout his stellar career. Therefore, we are optimistic he will have a speedy recovery and return to full health soon. Sting has kept his body in excellent shape, due largely to the guidance he’s received from his personal trainer Jeff Cavaliere (ATHLEAN-X), and we trust this will prove beneficial to the recovery process. As a side note, we later learned the greatest damage to his body took place before the match was over, but being the true professional he is and among the hardest workers to ever step foot in the ring, he insisted to see the match through to the end.

-Steve Martinez”

Last night, during the Sting vs. Seth Rollins main event, Rollins gave Sting the Buckle Bomb and Sting appeared to not take the bump as straight as he should. THe match was stopped briefly but Sting got his wind back and they soon went to the finish, with Rollins getting the pin by countering the Scorpion Deathlock into a cradle.

According to TMZ, Sting underwent a CAT scan at the hospital Sunday and thankfully there were no fractures. Sting was released Monday afternoon and is on his way home. He’s able to walk but is in significant pain. TMZ’s headline reads, “Full Recovery Uncertain.”

Details On WWE’s Plan To Prevent Future Incidents With Fans Jumping Guard Rails

71

As seen at WWE Night Of Champions on Sunday night, a fan jumped the guard rail and hit the ring just before the start of the Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho vs. The Wyatt Family six man tag-team match.

As noted late last night, WWE issued the following statement regarding the fan incident after the show:

“WWE takes the safety of our performers very seriously and any fan entering the ring area will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

According to PWInsider.com, due to the recent string of fan incidents, WWE is reportedly looking to pursue the most stringent prosecution possible for all future fan incidents.

WWE generally issues lifetime bans to fans who jump the guard rail at events, however if WWE pursues criminal charges for these incidents in the future, the feeling is it will decrease the amount of repeat incidents.

Sting Suffers Career-Threatening Neck Injury At WWE Night Of Champions

71

Sting was injured during last night’s WWE Championship match against Seth Rollins at Night of Champions.

Towards the end of the match, Rollins delivered a powerbomb that sent Sting into the turnbuckles back-first. It was a high-impact bump that appeared to knock the wind out of the 56 year old legend. As the match continued, Sting was barely able to stay on his feet, which resulted in the referee stopping the match and a WWE trainer entering the ring to check on him.

Dave Meltzer has confirmed that Sting suffered a ‘significant’ neck injury that could be career-ended.

The match was restarted and went on for several more minutes, but the call was made to end the match early and Seth Rollins won with a small package.

Off camera, Sting was helped to the backstage area and received additional medical attention.

WWE Statement Regarding Fan Entering The Ring At Night Of Champions

4

As we reported on Sunday night, a fan jumped the guard rail and hit the ring while Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose were staring down The Wyatt Family, prior to Chris Jericho being introduced as their mystery partner.

The fan ended up being taken down and out of the ring by security, Jericho came out as planned, and the match went on — as did the remainder of the show — without any additional interference from the fan, or other fans.

As this is the second time in recent weeks that WWE has had a fan jump the rail, coincidentally enough during Ambrose matches in both cases, WWE issued the following statement:

“WWE takes the safety of our performers very seriously and any fan entering the ring area will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

To make things even, however, Kane also choke slammed Rollins, and finished him off with a Tombstone Piledriver to end the pay-per-view.

WWE Night Of Champions Kickoff Show

After the usual Kickoff Show stuff, with the panel running down several of tonight’s scheduled matches, as well as a quick check-in with the social media lounge, we finally head down to the ring where Michael Cole, JBL and Jerry Lawler welcome us to our first match of the evening.

Cosmic Wasteland vs. Neville & The Lucha Dragons

Out first comes The Ascension and Stardust, who are collectively known as Cosmic Wasteland. Out next are their opponents, first out are the Lucha Dragons. Out next is their tag-team partner, “The Man That Gravity Forgot” — Neville.

The bell sounds and here we go with our Kickoff Show match of the evening. The big boy of The Ascension, Konnor, kicks things off with Sin Cara of The Lucha Dragons. Konnor dominates with his size and strength early on, however Sin Cara eventually uses his speed and high flying offense to take control and tag in Kalisto.

Kalisto comes in and picks up where Sin Cara left off, taking it to Konnor until Konnor cuts him off with a knee to the cut. Konnor tags in Stardust. Stardust goes to work on Kalisto as the fans boo.

After some back-and-forth action, the finish came when Stardust sacrificed one of his Ascension tag-team partners, which allowed him to hit his finisher on Neville for the 1-2-3.

Winners: Cosmic Wasteland

WWE Night Of Champions 2015

The Kickoff Show concludes with one final discussion from the expert panel, and then we shoot to the pay-per-view, which opens up with the usual bad-ass video package. The package focuses on all of the current WWE champions, as all of them will be defending their titles tonight at Night Of Champions. Michael Cole informs us that there are 14,369 fans inside the sold out Toyota Center in Houston, Texas for tonight’s show.

WWE Intercontinental Championship
– Ryback (c) vs. Kevin Owens

From there, we head to the ring where Lilian Garcia introduces our first match, which is for the I-C title. With that said, Ryback’s music hits and out he comes to the ring for tonight’s opening match.

After that, Kevin Owens’ music hits and the fans in Houston pop pretty damn loud for the former NXT Champion. Owens makes his way to the ring for his one-on-one contest against Ryback for the I-C title.

The bell sounds and Ryback immediately out-powers Owens, shoving him down flat on his ass as the fans break out in “Fight Owens Fight! Fight Owens Fight!” chants. Ryback floors Owens with a big shoulder tackle.

Owens backs Ryback into a corner and chops and punches away at him, only to be leveled on his ass by “The Big Guy” once again. Ryback then dumps Owens to the floor and leads the fans inside the Toyota Center in a “Feed Me More! Feed Me More!” chant.

Finally, Owens slams Ryback shoulder-first into the ring post on the floor. Ryback is selling his arm and now Owens is focusing his offensive attack on the “injured” shoulder of the I-C champ. Owens, now fully in control, mocks Ryback and taunts the fans.

Owens enjoys a lengthy period of time in control of the offense, however Ryback catches Owens with a big elbow and then turns him inside-out with a huge clothesline. Ryback going for the Shellshock but because of his “injured” arm, he drops Owens, who rolls Ryback up for a close near fall. Owens goes back to work on the hurt shoulder of “The Big Guy.”

Eventually, Ryback fights back again. He pulls the straps down and hoists Owens up for the Shellshock. Owens, while up, rakes the eyes of Ryback, which sets up a quick roll-up. 1-2-3. Owens wins. We have a new I-C champ!

Winner and NEW WWE Intercontinental Champion: Kevin Owens

MVP & Former WCW Star Backstage At WWE Night Of Champions

5

Well, it looks like Kane and Chris Jericho aren’t the only guests backstage at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, the site of tonight’s WWE Night Of Champions pay-per-view event.

According to PWInsider.com, former TNA star MVP is backstage at the venue in Houston, where he lives. Additionally, Stevie Ray, former Harlem Heat tag-team partner of Booker T, who also lives in the Houston area, is backstage as well.

As noted earlier this evening, Jericho is rumored to be the mystery partner for Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose in their six-man tag-team match against The Wyatt Family, however that is strictly a rumor at this point.
