NXT Takeover: Brooklyn Results – August 22, 2015

64

NXT Takeover: Brooklyn Kickoff Show

The 30-minute pre-show opens up with the panel, consisting of Renee Young, Corey Graves, Lita and Byron Saxton running down some of the top matches scheduled for tonight’s show.

Backstage, Samoa Joe is interviewed. Joe promises to beat Baron Corbin down and put him to sleep tonight.

Back to the panel, where in the background, we see the Barclays Center is finally filling up. The fans are chanting something as the panel runs down more of tonight’s matches.

We see a video package on Apollo Crews, the former Uhaa Nation. Then, we see Sasha Banks and Bayley arriving to the arena, followed by the video package for the NXT Women’s Championship.

NXT Takeover: Brooklyn Opener:

The show opens with a spotlight on Triple H in the ring. HHH, off-mic, talks about how NXT is the future, etc. Finally, he does the Finn Balor hand-raising pose ane the lights come on and the fans inside the Barclays Center go absolutely ballistic. “We are NXT!” shouts HHH as we shoot to the regular opener.

Tyler Breeze vs. Jushin Thunder Liger

From there, we shoot to the entrance area where Tyler Breeze makes his grand entrance to the ring for our first match of the evening.

Rich Brenan, Corey Graves and Byron Saxton officially welcome us to the show on commentary. From there, we shoot back to the entrance way where the legendary Jushin Thunder Liger makes his way down to the ring.

The fans go nuts for Liger, chanting his name once he gets in the ring. The bell sounds, the lights go down and it’s time for our opening contest.

Breeze gets an early offensive advantage over Liger, so he leans on the top ropes and lays back, old-school Shawn Michaels style. Liger gains the upper hand now and he goes over and does the same thing to mock Breeze.

Liger gets Breeze in a surfboard submission hold. Breeze breaks free. The action picks up a bit, as the fast-paced offense sets the perfect tone for the evening. Liger knocks Breeze down, picks up his iPhone holder and takes a selfie to further mock Breeze.

Breeze finally establishes the offensive control in the match. Breeze dominates the action for a few minutes until Liger hits a big flip off the apron onto Breeze on the floor. Back in the ring, Liger hits the Liger-bomb on Breeze and covers him. 1-2-3. Jushin Thunder Liger kicks off NXT Takeover: Brooklyn with a victory.

Winner: Jushin Thunder Liger

Backstage: The Wolfpac, Bayley, Nia Jax Coming Soon

We see Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Sean Waltman sitting ringside for tonight’s show. We shoot backstage and see Bayley, who has Dusty Rhodes polka-dot colored wrist-bands, getting ready for her title match. Charlotte and Becky Lynch come in and wish her good luck. A vignette airs saying “Nia Jax coming soon.”

Video: Dean Ambrose Comments On Rumors Of Sting’s WWE Return

15

Brian Fritz of Sporting News caught up with Dean Ambrose ahead of Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view and asked him about the rumors regarding Sting possibly appearing at the event.

“I didn’t hear that,” said Ambrose. “Anytime you get to see Sting in WWE, it’s a dream. Nobody ever thought he would be here, to see him at WrestleMania was awesome.”

Ambrose continued, “I have a feeling, you know, Sting is always very mysterious and he keeps it real like that, and I like that about Sting. I would hope that we see Sting in a WWE ring again.”

Since the interview, it has been reported that Sting left the New York City area to travel to Chicago for a Wizard World appearance, and will not be appearing at SummerSlam, despite the rumors.

Mick Foley Blogs About NXT Takeover: Brooklyn & SummerSlam

6

WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley wrote the following post on his official Facebook page regarding NXT Takeover: Brooklyn and SummerSlam.

WRESTLING’S BIG WEEKEND

With so much going on, in so many places, involving people who have meant so much to me on a professional or personal level, I feel inclined to just congratulate the business itself for standing strong and delivering great matches and shows on so may different levels. From the towering achievement of WWE NXT #TakeoverBrooklyn selling out the Barkley’s Center, to one of the most anticipated #SummerSlam events in recent memory, to Jim Ross at the Grammercy Theater, to #ROH doing what they’ve done very well for a very long time, to the huge #ProWrestlingSyndicate show that I’ll be part of TONIGHT in #Sayreville NJ – there seems to be SOMETHING for EVERYONE over the course of the next few days. Check out that #PWS card if you can, featuring Rey Mysterio, Kenny Omega, Jimmy Snuka, myself and many, many more. if you can. Tickets are available at http://realmickfoley.com/
What are YOU looking forward to the most this weekend? The ladder match with Owens & Balor? A potential classic from the #LegitBoss Sasha Banks in her title defense against Bailey – a match in which I am counting on #Brooklyn to compensate for the disrespectful climate the WWE women faced on WWE Raw last Monday. Or, like many, are you looking forward to Brock Lesnar vs The Undertaker – wondering if the payoff can live up to the legendary build.

Jim Ross Talks Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar, Seth Rollins As A Heel & More

14

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross recently spoke to Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard blog about this Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker: “A brawl is the only way to go for these two. What a great story it would be if both guys try to make their opponent submit. Think of what it would mean for a victory if both men were working for a submission–if the Undertaker continued to go for his gogoplata chokehold, and Lesnar was trying to get the kimura, which is a double wrist lock. Getting your opponent to tap out is the most macho of all the ways to win, and I can see that story woven in there by the announcers.”

On Divas triple threat match: “The Divas feuds are lacking structure and a reason to care. The emotional investment is not there yet in this rivalry. Who goes over with nine of them fighting? And how much time do they have? They need two good finishes in this match, and then you need to have Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, and Paige win. But I don’t know where they’re going with this–they haven’t established any real rivalries yet. They’re on the roster, getting some exposure, but it’s inevitable that some of them are going to have to take out some of their repertoire in a match with nine people.”

On Seth Rollins being a great heel: “But I sincerely hope there are no plans, somewhere down the road, to turn Rollins babyface. He’s still learning how to be a great heel, and it’s doing a damn good job with it. He’s a student of the game, works hard, and every week he adds another nuance of being a heel. He’s a major block in the foundation, so Cena beating him at SummerSlam is not the right thing to do. Rollins needs to retain the title, even if it’s with the help of plenty of outside interference.”

WWE Touts John Cena’s 500th Make-A-Wish, Cena Comments

19

After granting his 500th “Make-A-Wish” during his appearance on NBC’s “Today” show earlier this week, WWE has issued the following press release touting the work John Cena has done with the Make-A-Wish foundation over the years.

Make-A-Wish® Celebrates WWE® Superstar John Cena® for Granting Record 500 Wishes

John Cena to become the first celebrity wish granter in the organization’s 35 year history to reach the milestone

PHOENIX (August 21, 2015) – Make-A-Wish® congratulates WWE® Superstar John Cena® for granting 500 wishes through the wish granting organization. Cena will achieve the landmark wish total when he spends time with Rocco, an 8-year-old from Queens, NY, battling leukemia, before WWE Monday Night Raw® at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. For Rocco, the chance to hang out with the WWE Superstar will be a wish-come-true. For Cena, the meeting will be his 500th opportunity to bring hope and optimism to a wish child battling a life-threatening medical condition.

Since the founding of Make-A-Wish in 1980, no other celebrity has granted as many wishes as Cena. To acknowledge Cena and his contributions to Make-A-Wish, WWE and Make-A-Wish joined together to host a party on Friday, Aug. 21, at a Dave & Buster’s in New York City. Attendees included John Cena, Make-A-Wish America President and CEO David Williams, WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon, WWE Divas The Bella Twins® – Nikki and Brie, WWE Superstar Sheamus®, wish kids and their families. At the event, WWE announced a multi-year, million dollar commitment to Make-A-Wish – a symbol of WWE’s on-going support for wish granting.

In addition to wish granting, Cena regularly goes above and beyond to support the mission of Make-A-Wish. He has personally donated more than 6 million airline miles for wishes involving travel, hosted parties for wish kids at WrestleMania® and served as a Wish Ambassador at speaking engagements. Cena is also a recipient of the Chris Greicius Celebrity Award, which Make-A-Wish awarded him in 2009. In 2012, he also received an award to mark the milestone of his 300th wish, something no other celebrity or athlete has achieved.

“John Cena’s slogan, ‘Never Give UpTM,’ is a constant source of inspiration for wish kids and serves as a reminder to stay strong and keep pushing through the difficult times,” said David Williams, Make-A-Wish America President and CEO. “The fact that he has had the sustained success required to reach 500 wishes speaks volumes about the type of person John is and the quality of the wish experience he delivers.”

“There is no more humbling experience than a child who could ask for anything in the world asking to meet me,” said WWE Superstar John Cena. “I have faced some of the toughest Superstars in WWE history and I’ve never encountered more bravery or toughness than I see in each wish kid that I meet. It is inspiring to see the impact that granting wishes can have and I look forward to granting 500 more.”

WWE has been involved in wish granting since the early 1980s, beginning shortly after the founding of Make-A-Wish. The popularity of WWE has endured throughout the years with a total wish count in the thousands. Since 2001, more than 45 Superstars and Divas have individually been requested, and subsequently, granted a wish. To learn more about Make-A-Wish and the WWE relationship, visit wish.org.

Greg Valentine Says Women Wrestlers Should Be Fired & Sent To The Strip Club

95

WWE Hall of Famer Greg “The Hammer” Valentine recently appeared on Filsinger Games’ The View podcast and made some very controversial statement regarding women’s wrestling. Valentine cut right to the chase:

“As far as girl wrestling, I would send them all out to the strip bar and fire ’em.”

“I’d fire every girl wrestler I ever saw. They don’t draw any money, they have horrible matches. Uh … they’re terrible. That’s the way I feel.”

“They take away jobs from men that need to support their families. They should be home washing dishes and cooking and pregnant and barefoot.”

The male host responded, “Here we go..” and added that this was a perfect heel interview. Valentine continued:

“I love women … but they gotta realize their place. They’re not supposed to be wrestlers. They’re not supposed to be MMA fighters or boxers. It’s bullshit.”

You can listen to the full podcast here – Valentine’s rant begins around the 40-minute mark.

Jonathan Coachman Talks About ESPN’s Coverage Of WWE SummerSlam 2015

4

Jonathan Coachman recently spoke with Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard blog to promote ESPN’s coverage of WWE SummerSlam this Sunday night in Brooklyn, New York. Below are some of the highlights of the interview.

On how ESPN plans to cover this event: “We’re doing a lot of sit-downs on Saturday with guys who have cross-over appeal. We’re going to sit down and talk with different wrestlers that either played football in college, like Roman Reigns or John Cena, to the Miz, who was a reality star, so there are a lot of guys the casual sports fan would know. We’ll meet with them on Saturday, and those interviews will be on ESPN.com and our SportsCenter feed on Twitter, and then we’ll be doing live shots on Sunday morning from outside the arena to show people the atmosphere. Then we’ll interview a few people about what Sunday night means to their careers.”

On how he will approach covering the event: “We’re used to dealing with athletes and asking, ‘What does this game mean to you?’ Well, performing at SummerSlam is just like performing in the NFC Championship game. You’ve got to bring your top game so you can make it to the Super Bowl in WrestleMania. We want to introduce a lot of these guys to the part of the sports world who don’t watch Raw.”

On possibly working for WWE again and his plans at ESPN: “ESPN is not a place you come to take the next step, it’s a place you come to spend your career. I plan on retiring at ESPN, but I would love to be involved with ESPN and WWE. The biggest network in America for credibility in sports and entertainment is ESPN, so the best way to make your product credible is to be on ESPN. I’m proud of the fact that I am the liaison for the WWE. I appreciate the executives at ESPN opening their hearts and their minds, and I can’t think of anything cooler than what we’re doing this weekend at SummerSlam.”

Steve Austin Talks About Fans Giving John Cena A Hard Time, Lesnar vs. Taker & More

34

WWE Hall Of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin recently spoke with IGN to promote WWE 2K16, as well as this Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On who will win the Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker match: “I think it’s [Brock Lesnar’s] turn. And if you go that way then you can take the rubber match to WrestleMania and then Brock goes over and Taker rides off into the sunset. That’d be my prediction.”

On John Cena and the internet wrestling community giving him a hard time: “But everybody also knows that I’m a huge John Cena fan for his contributions for what he’s done for the business. He’s been the top guy for the last ten years. I’ve been there and I did it, so the run that he’s had is amazing. When you get the IWC involved, a lot of people have had a gut-full of him. But when a guy like me from outside, who was inside in the business at the highest level, looks at what he’s done, it’s phenomenal. So you could flip a coin on this one. You’d really have to get inside Vince McMahon’s head and see the chess game that’s going on. Get his mindset to see what he wants to do with the pieces on the table. That’s a hard one for me to pick. I’ll go Taker on Taker/Lesnar, but it’s really hard to call Cena/Rollins.”

Something “Huge” Planned For Monday’s RAW, Big Stars At SummerSlam?

33

Although he was in Brooklyn, New York for some WWE 2K16 obligations, as well as some other work, WWE Hall Of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin will not be sticking around for Saturday’s NXT Takeover: Brooklyn or Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam events. There were those who were hoping that Austin would make an appearance because of how WWE is promoting this year’s SummerSlam to be a WrestleMania-sized event, however that will not be happening.

It is worth pointing out, however, that Ric Flair will be in town for Saturday and Sunday’s shows. There is no word as to whether or not Flair will actually appear on camera in some form or fashion, however it’s definitely a possibility.

According to F4WOnline.com, “something huge” is planned for Monday’s post-SummerSlam edition of WWE RAW. What exactly that is isn’t clear at the moment, and things could always change before Monday night, however as of right now, something big is planned for the show.

Backstage Update On Bonus System In NXT, NXT Talent To Be Paid Extra This Weekend?

4

NXT contracted performers have not been given bonuses based on working events with bigger gates outside of their usual shows at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida. This includes those who worked the NXT event in San Jose, California during WrestleMania weekend, a show that drew over 5,000 paid.

The main reason WWE does not offer bonuses for these shows is because NXT live events and developmental in general are currently money losing businesses. Developmental loses money largely due to the fact that so many talents are under guaranteed contracts. Also, as a promotion, NXT only runs three live events locally in Florida, at the most, drawing 200-300 fans. They run the shows to give talent experience in front of a live crowd, and because there are no travel expenses for NXT talent working in Florida, the feeling is that they are being paid to learn.

It’s worth noting that when NXT talent are brought to WWE live events, they are paid for those shows and have their road expenses covered as well.

This Saturday’s NXT Takeover: Brooklyn event will have a live gate of around $700,000, which is an incredible accomplishment for the brand. The Finn Balor vs. Kevin Owens and Sasha Banks vs. Bayley title matches are the headlining attractions, and traditionally those involved would receive a bonus based on the gate, however that may not be the case with NXT Takeover: Brooklyn.

Owens is now on a main roster deal, and Balor’s deal is said to be different than the traditional developmental deals because he was already an established star in a major league promotion, so they will both likely receive bonuses of some kind for Saturday’s live special.

The real question is whether or not Banks and Bayley will receive bonuses. Banks may also be on a main roster deal now, and if that is the case, she would get a bonus as well. What this could mean is that Bayley could be the lone performer among the four in headlining spots that will not receive a bonus due to the fact that she is under a regular developmental deal.

Matt Hardy Talks About TNA’s Future, Most Grueling Ladder Match Story & More

5

Matt Hardy recently took part in a A.M.A. session with the r/SquaredCircle community on Reddit to promote his new shoot interview, available at TheWrestlingBundle.com. Below are some of the highlights.

On the most painful spot he’s ever been involved in: “Probably when my abdomen ripped in half, allowing my intestines to thrust outside of it. Indescribable pain. There’s been too many painful moments throughout my career to truly rank them though.”

On the best thing about no longer working for WWE: “The absolute freedom that it allows me. I make my own schedule. I work when I want to, I take off when I want to. The WWE is the best-an incredible company-but if you’re there full-time, it really consumes your life.”

On if he prefers being in the same company as Jeff, or if he enjoys when he’s allowed to do your his thing: “I love working at the same place as my brother, it’s an added bonus. But yes, sometimes it’s nice to have separation between our wrestling characters, as it’s hard for Matt & Jeff Hardy to be in the same promotion & NOT team as the Hardy Boyz. I love performing as a singles and it helps me highlight what I feel like are strengths of mine that aren’t always on exhibit when Jeff & I team.”

On the most grueling ladder match he has ever been in: “My toughest Ladder Match was the one vs E & C that happened the first night WWE was on TNN. All 4 of us (Me, Jeff, Adam & Jay) were all terribly hurting & physically spent from the Cage Match the night before at Unforgiven. We weren’t supposed to wrestle AT ALL that night, yet ended up in a brutal, long Ladder Match that day. I remember none of us were overly happy with our performance that night–we just weren’t physically able to produce the kind of performance that we wanted to that evening.”

On the current status of TNA: “First off, I love working at TNA right now. The locker room & working environment is great & the freedom that TNA allows it’s wrestlers is unparalleled. What happens with TNA & Dest America in the future? I’m honestly not sure. I hope they continue to work together. If not, they’ll look elsewhere for domestic distribution. Internationally, TNA is doing phenomenal business. I’ll openly admit that TNA is in a rebuilding phase after the Hogan-Bischoff era. There may be bumps in the road, but TNA is not going out of business & will soon be starting another period of growth.”

On if he has ever accidentally wrestled with stuff in the pockets of his cargo wrestling pants: “HA! You are absolutely right, they are handy to wear backstage. Great observation! I always put my hair-tie in my right pocket of my pants before wrestling–that’s a strict ritual of mine. I was one time about to make a coffee & had my match bumped up to be earlier. After taking a superplex, there was packets of Sweet N Low in the ring that I’d never taken out to put in my coffee.”
