Jim Ross Blog: Roddy Piper’s Passing, Cena’s Broken Nose, Ronda Rousey’s KO

10

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross recently updated his official blog with his thoughts and opinions on a number of current topics. Below are some of the highlights.

On the passing of Roddy Piper: “Roddy was the perfect pro wresting villain because he was fearless, he had no issues putting his own safety at risk, and had no desire to be ‘cool’ back in the day but to be a truly despised individual that lived up to his casting/booking and to fulfill all the obligations his bosses and his opponent needed and that was to make the customers pay money to come see Rod get his comeuppance.

Roddy had no issues ‘retreating’ when the moment called for it and was always willing to cheat to gain an unfair advantage to win a match via unethical methods which are so lacking today by the majority of pro wrestling’s villains.

Without Roddy Piper WWF would have had a more challenging time in developing their new presentation headed by super hero Hulk Hogan in the mid 80’s with the launch of Wrestlemania 1 where Vince McMahon essentially mortgaged his company’s entire future on the success of that one event. Rowdy Roddy Piper’s contributions to Wrestlemania 1 can never be discounted.

The true art of being a pro wrestling villain is becoming a fleeting skill set that will, in time, erode the basic foundation of the business itself if it isn’t addressed.”

On John Cena hate and his broken nose: “Seems as if it’s only the most uneducated and novice of wrestling fans who can truly dislike John Cena especially after watching his performance with a grotesquely broken nose on RAW. I can see where some may not enjoy John as much as others because he is “overexposed” in their view but to verbally castrate him for any other reason is borderline stupidity.”

On Ronda Rousey: “The amazing Ronda Rousey did it again Saturday night in Brazil with a first round knock out. There have been few athletes in my life time who have been as dominate in their sport as @RondaRousey is in MMA. Michael Jordan in the NBA, Mike Tyson in boxing and Wayne Gretzky in the NHL quickly come to mind. She’s leading the way for women to strive to excel in their chosen fields of endeavor and thus creating new fans of female sports that will help countless women over time. I think that Rousey’s popularity in MMA and her stardom around the world has contributed to WWE’s renewed interest in developing the female side of their roster.”

“Cowboy” Bob Orton Talks About His Friend, The Late Roddy Piper

0

NBC affiliate WNDU recently ran a piece featuring comments from “Cowboy” Bob Orton, who was a longtime friend and on-air partner of the late Roddy Piper’s.

“I had just talked to Roddy a couple of days before and he sounded great,” said Orton of Piper’s passing. “So yeah, at first you just don’t believe it. You have to let it sink in. It’s starting to now after what they just did out there and you realize you’re not going to see him again and it’s a shame. He’s going to be missed.”

Orton continued, “He could always make you laugh. No matter how you felt, how down you were, how much the road could get to you, he could always make you laugh. Just a great guy. Everybody loved him.”

Jim Ross Q&A: WWE HOF Induction Process, Tough Enough/Total Divas & More

0

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross recently updated the Q&A section of his official website, answering questions from fans on a variety of topics. Below are some of the highlights.

On who decides which legends are inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame: “I assume [Vince] McMahon makes the final decisions, but I can’t be sure as I don’t work there any longer but I’ve had the opportunity in the past when I did work there to make suggestions.”

On William Regal: “He’s in a good spot with his current responsibilities working with NXT and scouting indy wrestlers. He’s a great performer as well.”

On if he thinks shows like Total Divas and Tough Enough expose and hurt the business: “I think that we are well passed the world of going too far as it relates to the curtain being pulled back. So, no I don’t think that those types of shows hurt the business.”

On comedy in wrestling: “Comedy has its place if it is well executed and timely not to mention organic. Forced and poorly presented it is a turn off.”

Moose Talks About Re-Signing With Ring Of Honor

1

Ring Of Honor star Moose recently appeared as a guest on the Chad Dukes Wrestling Show. Below are some of the highlights of the interview.

On re-signing with ROH: “Ring of Honor gave me my very first chance. They helped create the brand ‘Moose.’ So I mean it was an easy decision, they told me that they were going to stick by me with whatever decision I made and I just felt like I’m a real loyal guy, so they helped me get get me to where I’m at now so I’m going to return the favor.”

On the pressures of living up to prior former football playing wrestlers and cutting ties with football: “There’s the goods and there’s the bads. You’ve got Goldberg, Wahoo [McDaniel], Ernie Ladd, greats. So there was the pressure of can I be as good as those guys and then you have some of the guys who wasn’t so good that came in from the football world. There was also the pressure of, “Man what if I suck as bad as those guys.” So I mean it’s big pressure, the best thing to do is just work my ass off, work as hard as I can, so that I can be up there with the Wahoos, the Ernie Ladds and the Goldbergs and other guys.”

“When I left football I decided I want to leave that behind me. I don’t want to have any teases about going back even though I knew there wasn’t going to be one but I didn’t want to have that maybe so I shut the door completely. I don’t follow it, which sucks because I have a lot of friends in the football world and I don’t get the watch their stuff because I’m scared of my watch it and go, “Oh man I miss football I want to go back and play.” So I kind of like shut the door.”

Jay Lethal On Being The Face Of ROH, Wrestling 60-Minute Draw & More

1

Ring Of Honor star Jay Lethal recently appeared as a guest on the Chad Dukes Wrestling Show. Below are some of the highlights of the interview.

On being the face of ROH: “I feel like I won the lottery because what a perfect time to be the world champion of Ring of Honor with all the momentum from Sinclair and everything and now the acquisition of being on Destination America and with the inevitable downfall of the other company who assumed the number two slot, because we are the number two wrestling company in the world right now. But yeah it’s an exciting time I feel like I won the lottery.”

On wrestling a 60-minute draw: “I don’t believe there’s any way to prepare for that. It’s like, ‘Oh, I’m a runner. So I’m going to go practice in the gym on the treadmill and on the elliptical.’ I have actually run on the treadmill and I’ve run on elliptical and then I decided to run through my park at home and let me tell you there’s no substitute for really running. When there’s something that you need to get done there’s no substitute other than actually doing it. So there was really no preparing to have a sixty-minute match, it was tough.”

“It’s one of those moments where you have to dig down deep and pull everything that you have and I swear by the end of that match I had nothing left. There was nothing left in the tank, so to speak.”

Gunner Talks About His Connection To His Faith, Aspirations For The Future

6

Former TNA star Chad ‘Gunner’ Lail recently spoke with Marc Madison of The News Hub about a number of topics. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On his aspirations for the future: “I personally hope to one day compete in the WWE. That is my ultimate goal since I was 5. I really feel like even if I go and another huge goal of mine is acting. I’ve done two movies this year and I do numerous amounts of auditions every week but I think my heart lies and still does with having a WWE match and having that Wrestlemania moment. After that I can probably retire and hopefully build The Rock’s status and act as much as I can because I love acting. The beating on my body and wanting to have kids one day and enjoy them.”

On his connection to his faith: “I think that my faith is something that is important to me. I was brought up and it was never something that was forced on me but something I did on my own and it’s my choice. It’s really just one of those things that whether you believe in God or a higher power or even just being a spiritual person to me all things happen for a reason. Whatever life brings me I realize it’s not the end of the world, it’s not my last day here on earth. There are bigger and better plans for me and the thing is you can’t sit home and expect people to come knock at your door. My faith really helps me realize that you better go on out there and get it. Just keep a positive attitude about life and say that one of the people I look up to most is Christ. He was a role model to me. He was and is a positive influence in my life. The things he taught, the way he walked and I just tried to model myself after that, just being a good person and to work hard to get things…”

Rey Mysterio Talks Possible WWE Return, Perro Aguayo’s Death & More

6

Rey Mysterio recently spoke with Sports Illustrated’s “Extra Mustard” blog to promote the Northeast Wrestling events this weekend. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On the death of Perro Aguayo Jr. in March: “That something like that would even occur. You always think of the worst injury, but never that situation. In this case, it was absolutely that. We lost the biggest superstar that Mexico has ever seen. There were so many plans moving forward that would have been incredible. When I meet great people in this industry, I like to let them know they are great human beings. Perro was definitely one of them. He was so warm-hearted, kind, and respectful. Just like there will never be another Eddie, there will never be another Perro.”

On meeting Vince McMahon in 2002: “Meeting Vince was eye-opening. It was exciting for me to meet the man. Here I was, part of a company I thought I’d never be a part of because of my size, but Vince McMahon decided to bring me on board.”

“My only option was to succeed. I needed to prove that I could make it in the big leagues with my size and weight. But Vince was really cool right off the bat. He said they had big plans for me, and I was looking very forward to every single plan they had. My first night with WWE was coming in after a match with Chavo [Guererro]. He had me run down to the cage, climb up, and do a plancha off the top of the cage. No one knew how to market me like Vince McMahon.”

On taking time away from WWE and his departure: “My contract was coming to an end. I had been on the grind for so long, and even I was out for a long period of time due to surgery, I was constantly rehabbing. I never had the time to participate in my kids’ lives or be around my wife. So I really thought about it – I could be working until I’m 43, 44, or 45 years old, and keep on making money, but where is that going to leave me? I’ve already done good for myself, so I really needed a break. I wanted to detach myself from having a certain obligation. I wanted to do things on my terms. I wanted to rest, I wanted to enjoy my kids. I wasn’t getting any younger, and my kids weren’t getting any younger. I weighed my options, and leaving WWE was a decision my wife and I made together.

“I’m truly blessed to have a partner, a soulmate that’s been loyal and equal to me for all this time. She’s been a mother and a father throughout all the years me being on the grind, on the road. Now, I have control of my life and my career. Family has always been the number one importance in my life, and they’re the reason I decided I stepped away for a little while.”

On a possible WWE return: “I didn’t leave on bad terms. I left on good terms with WWE, so I don’t want to say never. They treated me very well, and I’m nothing but thankful with that company for letting Rey Mysterio be Rey Mysterio and be recognized worldwide. If the opportunity comes about in the future, and there is interest from both parties, then why not?”

WWE To Postpone Monday’s “Stone Cold Podcast” With Paige?

25

There is still no word as to whether or not the “Stone Cold Podcast” with Steve Austin and Paige will still be airing on the WWE Network immediately following this Monday’s RAW as scheduled.

There is an expectation that WWE will postpone the podcast, as a special on the life and career of the late “Rowdy” Roddy Piper is expected.

Hulk Hogan was originally scheduled to be Austin’s guest, however when the racism scandal broke, WWE made the last-minute decision to replace Hogan with Paige, so it’s likely that WWE won’t hesitate to postpone the Paige-Austin interview in favor of a Piper special.

Mick Foley Comments On UFC President Dana White’s “Fake” Outburst

50

Ahead of last night’s UFC 190 event in Brazil UFC President Dana White was promoting the show on his official Twitter page.

He was sent a message by one fan who spoke about the price of a UFC PPV in comparison to that of the WWE Network.

This led to Dana replying “fake sh** should be 9.99”- a comment that didn’t sit well among fans and wrestlers alike who took to the Internet to vent their frustration.

Earlier today Mick Foley took to his Facebook page and shared the following about the comments made by the UFC President:

ROUSEY GETS ROWDY, DANA GETS DUMB

So, Dana White called wrestling “fake”, Don’t get all worked up about it. Dana’s a smart guy who made a poor word choice, As WWE Champion Seth Rollins pointed out on Twitter, “Guys, cut Dana White some slack. I mean he’s had a million matches, so his opinion is super-valid, and should be taken as gospel.” Plus, it’s the same word-choice made by former WWE Champion CM Punk – another smart guy who should have selected a more appropriate word to describe the in-ring nature of sports-entertainment.

The FAR bigger story in UFC is that Ronda Rousey, in a heartfelt move, dedicated her fight and gave a post-fight shout-out to the late, great Roddy Piper. On a day when Dana White’s use of wrestling’s F-word offended many wrestlers and fans, the actions of Rousey – the most popular fighter in the world – touched the hearts of fans (both wrestling and MMA) around the world. Dana’s dumb words will pass in time. Ronda’s touching words will last forever.

Feel free to let me know how you feel about both Dana and Ronda. In Dana’s defense, on the two occasions I’ve met him, he, UFC fighters and management have been very nice and more than hospitable; telling me I was welcome at UFC events “anytime”. You don’t have to give him a free pass, but take it easy on him. We all make mistakes. Plus, I may want to go see Ronda, or my friend Leslie Smith fight sometime.

Daniel Bryan Talks More About His Injury, His Wife Being Skeptical About His Return

4

In this week’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter they note that while promoting his new book “Yes!: My Improbable Journey to the Main Event of Wrestlemania” he discussed his current injury.

They quote him as saying:

“Well, it’s not a neck issue. My neck is completely fine. It’s more of a concussion issue. And Brie (his wife) was very hesitant about this whole thing, and that’s why WWE is very protective over me, too. Everyone is more aware of concussions and that’s why, with WWE, I see what they’re doing, as far as making me go through all these hurdles. I don’t se that as a negative. They’re protecting me, especially in this era of concussion awareness.”

Bryan also spoke about how his wife Brie Bella was negative about him getting back into the ring and competing but now she’s changed her mind:

“When we met with the neurologist in Phoenix and we want through all the testing and he said, `Okay, all of my testing is not just coming back good, it’s coming back excellent.’ As far as my brain right now, it’s at a level above most people who have never had a concussion my age.”

The former WWE Champion explained that recent brain testing showed that his brain was at excellent levels and this led Brie to change her mind from being skeptical to supportive about him returning.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter also notes Bryan talking about his return and how if he does, he doesn’t expect to be in a top spot in the company because of how the injury will perceive him.

He added that Vince doesn’t see him like he sees John Cena or probably Roman Reigns but does see him as a valuable performer that can make the company money.

Bryan also noted that Steve Austin also reached out to him and tried to give him some advice about changing up his style to get the most out of his career.

Tough Enough: More On WWE Officials And ZZ, Who Is Vince McMahon’s Favourite?

10

As previously reported, F4Wonline.com noted that WWE officials want ZZ eliminated from the Tough Enough competition on the next episode.

WWE released a clip on YouTube showing coach Billy Gunn addressing all the competitors and in particular ZZ due to their in-ring performance not being up to the standard it should be at.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter notes that Tough Enough producers are “over” ZZ because of the way he backed down to Mada on the last episode.

At the end of the day however, it’s not up to the Tough Enough producers as the weekly vote is left in the hands of the viewing public – and ZZ continues to be increasingly popular among fans each week.

It’s also been noted that Vince McMahon’s favourite competitor since day one is Josh and he reportedly wants him to win the competition.

Check out the video below of Tough Enough coach Billy Gunn addressing the competitors:

Several Wrestlers Weigh-In On UFC President Dana White’s “Fake” Comment

74

Ahead of last night’s UFC 190 event in Brazil, UFC President took to Twitter to address a fan who criticized the price tag of a UFC PPV in comparison to the $9.99 price tag of the WWE Network.

Dana White agreed that while the price tag was high, “fake sh** should be 9.99,” said White. He went on to clarify that he wasn’t disrespecting what wrestlers do and those he have met are awesome.

Below are the tweets that began the “fake” discussion that saw a number of wrestlers hit back at Dana White over his comments considering everything they put their bodies through:

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins was one of the man to speak out regarding Dana White’s comments that wrestling is fake:

Former ECW and WWE Superstar Taz also commented on the “fake” comments made by Dana White:

“They Live'” Director John Carpenter & Jonny Fairplay On Roddy Piper’s Passing

0

Film director John Carpenter, who famously worked with Roddy Piper in Piper’s biggest film success, “They Live,” spoke with the A.P.’s Dan Gelston about the passing of the late WWE legend.

“He was a great wrestler,” Carpenter said. “He was an underrated actor and just a marvelous entertainer and I feel like I’ve just lost one of my close friends… Roddy will always be loved because of his wrestling career. He really became a legend in pro wrestling. He will not be forgotten.”

Jonny Fairplay, who worked as Piper’s personal assistant in 2001, also commented in the piece about Piper’s passing.

“I would wake him up in the morning and yell at him from the door of his bedroom,” Fairplay said. “I’d say, ‘Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, the guy who never beat Hulk Hogan.’ Rowdy Piper should be remembered as the greatest bad guy of all time.” Read the full story at Bigstory.ap.org.

Kazarian On Working Samoa Joe’s Final ROH Match, Daniels, AJ Styles & More

0

Former TNA and current Ring Of Honor performer Frankie Kazarian recently appeared as a guest on The Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling podcast. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On The Addiction as a team and working with Christopher Daniels: “It is hard to put in one short answer. The guy is my best friend, I’ve known him for pretty much the better part of the 17 years of my career. It’s great having somebody that you can rely on not just in the context of a wrestling match but also on the road, traveling here and there. We are best friends, tag team partners, our train of thought is very similar when it comes to wrestling matches and the whole business. It’s a real confidence booster knowing he’s there and takes a lot of stress off knowing how professional he is and knowing where we both are going to need to be. It’s almost like we are on cruise-control at this point, we know each other so well. When it comes to tag team wrestling all those thing make an awesome package.”

On being revealed as the KRD, what makes this story different: “If I can say that one thing Ring of Honor is not lacking, but is not necessarily focused on is angles like the KRD one and Ring of Honor is top notch in every aspect, especially match quality and there is nothing to compare it to. But, angles being played out like that is something you necessarily saw a lot on Ring of Honor previously and being a fan of cool well put together angles I was psyched to be a part of it. I was thrilled to become tag team champions that way and I hope that now on Destination America we can continue to do some outside-of-the-box kind of things in terms of Ring of Honor’s previous business model.”

On if he prefers to work babyface or heel: “Without question we are in our wheel-house when are bad guys. The act really got some steam when we were doing dastardly things over in TNA in 2012. It really fits our personalities so much better portraying the bad guys, it’s just right and it’s us. We got a lot of real positive reactions when we came to Ring of Honor and I think because people were happy to see us but after a while it’s going to wear off and if any team is going to be the working heels and the bad guys of the company I can’t think of anyone better then Chris Daniels and myself.”

On working Samoa Joe’s final Ring of Honor match in NYC with AJ Styles and Daniels: “Those three gentleman stood up with me at my wedding. That says it all right there. Those are three guys that I’ve traveled with and known longer than anyone else in the business and are my three best friends in the business. We all have come up together, all of our families know each other so it was a very special moment. The match we knew match quality wise was going to be there but it was afterwards really taking it in and I got to share the ring one last time with my three best friends in the business for Ring of Honor especially it was really cool and I was very aware because I used to take moments like that in my career for granted. The whole day was a great moment, especially after the match when Ring of Honor gave Joe the sendoff that he so richly deserved.

“Mean” Gene Okerlund Remembers The Late “Rowdy” Roddy Piper

0

WWE Hall Of Famer “Mean” Gene Okerlund spoke with WWE’s Scott Stanford about the passing of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper on PIX11 in New York City on Friday night.

Okerlund commented on his reaction when he got the news about Piper’s passing.

“Oh my god… totally devastated because Scott, this is the third in a row for me in the last six and a half weeks,” said Okerlund. “First of course Verne Gagne, secondly a few weeks back we lost “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. This one hits hard like the other two, and all of the guys we’ve lost in recent years.”

“Mean” Gene also spoke about something we will always remember about “The Hot Rod.”

“I think the one thing that’s going to be a big part of his legacy, he kind of sheltered his family from the business, at least until recently,” said Okerlund. “He was a very good father. He had a son Colt and three daughters, and a lovely young lady by the name of Kitty, his wife and only wife. We hear about a lot of relationships going south in a big hurry but Roddy was very tight and loved his family dearly.”
