  • AJ Styles Speaks On TNA Going Out Of Business, His TNA Departure & More

    17

The following are highlights of a recent Baltimore Sun interview with AJ Styles:

On leaving TNA: “I honestly thought I’d be the guy that TNA could say, “This is the first guy that we signed to this company, and he’s retiring from our company.” And, man, what an awesome thing that would have been. So I never imagined I would leave that company, I assumed I’d retire from there. It sucks, but you can’t fix that now. I left the door open…”

On whether or not he thinks TNA is going out of business: “You know, I really don’t know. I know they’ve made a lot of cuts. That must mean they’re not doing so well. Sting gone, Hogan gone, myself gone, and I’m sure we’re going to see more cuts soon. From what I’ve heard and been told, it’s been horribly mismanaged as a company. I don’t know if they’re going out of business. But they’re definitely doing things that make people think they’re going out of business. And I hope they don’t. I hope TNA doesn’t go out of business because I have a lot of good friends that work there and deserve to be in the national spotlight. My hope is that they never go out of business.”

On returning to TNA in the future: “I tried to leave the door open. I haven’t buried the company. Like I said, I have friends there who do well, so I’m not going to do that. But I don’t know if I’ll ever go back, and it’s definitely not going to be any time soon. And from what one of their higher ups said, it will be ‘Only if there’s space available for AJ Styles.’ So I guess there might not be room for me, according to him.”

  • Dolph Ziggler’s Brother Speaks Out On Being Released By WWE

    11

The following are highlights of an interview with Dolph Ziggler’s brother Ryan Nemeth, who had a run in NXT as Briley Pierce:

On if his injury ended his WWE Career: “I felt like I was on the way up… main event of every house show. Feeling good, good responses, good rapport… they loved me & Maddox together. Everything was going great. Dusty said they were looking for tag teams in WWE, main roster, & he picked us. Maddox got called up to be a referree & I was home rehabbing. Everyone would call me asking if I was debuting & my leg was in a cast & I can’t walk… I’m drooling on myself. I’m sleeping on the floor every night because I’m sad. So then I would tell them I come out at the end & I knock out Brock [Lesnar]. I’m happy for them. There are times I’m like, “everyone in this battle royal or whatever it is on Raw, I wrestled with all of them & I’m the only one not there.” That’s the kind of thought you have to acknowledge, accept, & let it go. I’m doing cool sh*t that they can’t do & I wouldn’t be able to do if I was still signed. Road Dogg was producing at NXT & he came over & goes ‘You are so good on camera & have so much personality. If your in-ring skills can eventually get to where your brother’s is & your brother’s microphone skills can get to where yours is, we can have tag champs for the next 100 years. Road Dogg told me that. You know when something makes you feel good? That lasted for weeks & months. Damn, man. That’s another one I was like, I see my brother on TV & he’s awesome & doing great… & then Road Dogg & Billy Gunn are champs. I’m thinking, ‘What the Hell? You guys moved up? You finally moved up from Performance Center, bro?’ If I was still there doing that, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now. If I want to wrestle & take a booking, I can. I’m wrestling in Australia. I can’t do that signed to WWE. There’s a tendency to get negative or bitter or ‘Oh, he got signed but I didn’t get signed. Screw that guy’, you can’t live like that. If someone gets an opportunity, be happy for them. Maybe you’ll get one… maybe you won’t. But being mad at someone else isn’t going to change it.”

On future wrestling bookings: “Rob Terry from TNA & I are going to Austrailia next month. Can’t say what I will be doing there but I will be in attendance in that building May 23.”

On getting released by WWE & how Dolph Ziggler knew before him: “I was eating lunch somewhere before an NXT house show. Mr Sakomoto kept calling & texting me like crazy. I called him back & he told me he got a phone call that he was released. I thought to myself, ‘We just started going. We had a long-time program written up. We just had our tag team started on NXT.’ All the creative guys were pumped about it. There is nothing funny on that show except for us. I thought this ruined everything… I have to start over again. Great. I have to redo everything again. This is one of my best friends. He has to leave the country. This sucks. & then I’m driving back to my house to pack my stuff for the show but, as I’m driving, I’m stopped at a red light & it hit me. I’m getting fired today. I totally knew it. Why would they axe Sakamoto? He didn’t have the best English & I was in the guy in NXT/WWE that all of the Japanese guys gravitated toward me. For one reason or another, they always became my buddies. He wanted me to call Canyon Semen to ask why he was fired.I was starting to put together a lot of clues. Then I had all these calls from Canyon Semen anyway. I thought, if I don’t answer, he can’t fire me. So I didn’t answer. It was originally my Dolph’s idea. I told him I think someone really wanted me out of here for the past 6 months & it finally worked. I won’t tell you everything he said but he said not to pick up the phone. He gave me the idea not to pick up the phone. I’ll tell them my phone broke. I called him back eventually, “So-and-so finally convinced you to fire me, huh?’ & he goes ‘yup.’ He listed the reasons & I said ‘y’know that’s not true, right? Thanks for firing me, anyways.’ He goes, ‘Look, Ryan, I know you’re going to be a hit in the entertainment business & make millions of dollars.’ So I said, ‘Yeah I know. I told you that. I wanted it to be with you but I guess it will be with someone else.’ I remember thinking in my head, you’re releasing me from an entertainment company & the entire time you’re laughing. I hope you look back in 10 years & go, ‘Whoops!’ I said, ‘One last thing. Will you still let my brother be world champion?’ & he said ‘Yup!’ & then I hung up on him. I’m told I’m the blue chip, most hardworking, most entertaining NXT talent… my brother is World Champ for a second time… you’re telling me I’m done for? Let him think about that for a while. I handled it professionally & my own flavor & taste. My brother texted me, ‘Hey. So-and-so called me to tell me they’re releasing you. A very respectful company called someone who’s not me to tell me I was being released before they actually spoke to me. I will say I had some good times there, entertain some people, make a little name for myself, get some publicity for my book… did some charity. Had some good times. I was someone’s younger brother. I haven’t been wrestling for 10 years. I wrestled for a year before they picked me up for OVW. I remember Camacho telling me people got hired who didn’t even know about wrestling– football players & model girls. There is no one right way to do it. I have a chip on my shoulder about the people who say ‘Oh, you haven’t been working the indies for five, ten years, I shouldn’t have a job.'”

On how his comedy improv helped him in wrestling: “It did help me alot. I had been spending summers in college in Chicago, working in improv, training at the place where people like Amy Poehler & Chris Farley got their start. I was always viewing that, theater, & OVW as similiar things in my mind. They were both kind of like… the guy who’s teaching you either way… this old, crotchety crazy person… like I’m thinking of Rip Rogers in OVW. He was the head trainer for WWE for a while & was still at OVW. There is always a legendary, cranky old man figures. Insane people who cannot function in a normal society but have the tools to teach you how to be good in whatever craft you’re in. There’s always someone like that. Comedy… wrestling…In wrestling, it was Rip Rogers. & I’m sure if you interview who passed through OVW, they’ll tell you about him. Whether it’s guys on the indies now… or people like CM Punk or John Cena, for sure. It was cool to talk to the guys like Cena, Orton, & all of them & we had that connection of OVW & Rip Rogers & we would exchange funny stories about him.”

On how fellow wrestlers supported his book, “I Can Make Out With Any Girl Here”: “There was a time when someone bought my book… I think it was the athletic trainer at FCW/NXT… a lot of people bought my book & I was excited. Brad Maddox took the book, read it, & started giving it to everyone else in the locker room. I was on a roll where a lot of people were buying it & I was getting royalties… & then Brad Maddox was lending it out. No one is going to buy it if you’re giving it to them for free. Camacho, Rusev, Cena, a lot of people read that book. Sara Del Ray has it but won’t read it because it’s very vulgar.”

On what inspired him to start writing: “It is something I have been doing my whole life. Throughout grade school, high school… I was always excited when homework involved creative writing. That was my favorite thing to school. If there was ever a newspaper in school, I always wanted to contribute to it. I didn’t want to submit interviews or articles, I would want to submit drawings I did. I would make up fake text messages & submit it to the comic section.”

On dealing with social media & recent death threats: “I would rather you un-follow me than threaten to kill me & my family… I’ve been getting a lot of those recently. I am honored that anyone would even take the time to type something & send it over the Internet to get to me so, whether it’s graphic or polite, y’know, I appreciate it. The attention is nice. But, I have been getting… the last few days or weeks, a few people I don’t know on Twitter telling me that they’re going to kill me or they can’t wait ’til I die. So, y’know, I do get extremes. I get that. I think it’s the same for anyone. There’s people who hate you & people who love you so… take the good with the bad.”

Chavo Guerrero Sr. Talks Nancy Grace Controversy, Relationship With Eddie’s Family

    4

The following are highlights of a new Who’s Slamming Who interview with Chavo Guerrero Sr.:

On His Strained Relationship with Eddie’s Family: “We don’t stay in touch that much. They’ve chosen to be like that. Why? I don’t know. I have no idea. Ever since Eddie [Guerrero] passed our relationships have not been there. But I hear [my niece Shaul, aka WWE’s Raquel Diaz] is doing good. I talk to her once in a while. No, I have not been following her career. The main reason being that I didn’t teach her. If you want to be the best [wrestler], you [should] come to a Guerrero. Especially if you’re a Guerrero. But she had that opportunity to go to WWE. I guess she’s doing good. She’s still got a contract. That’s all good. That’s as much as I can say about my niece.”

On the Nancy Grace / Warrior Controversy: “She did not know the facts. It’s not only in wrestling, [but] it’s in a lot of other stuff. I stopped listening to her and never really enjoyed her. She’s just not my type of journalist. Not only in wrestling, [but] many other subjects she speaks out of turn. She doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Let’s put it this way. She doesn’t research to know what she’s talking about. She just says things out of [context]. She’s an idiot. She’s an imbecile. It’s not because she said something about wrestling. Sure, some of us have dealt with steroids … The point was not about steroids. The point was that all these wrestlers that have not died from steroids were put in the same category. That’s just not fair to the families.”

On TNA, ROH, and Other WWE Competitors: “The only company really out there is WWE. They’re #1. If you don’t want to work for them [then] you’re a fool. We’re still not receiving what we should as professional athletes. As much money as WWE makes, it’s by far the best-paid company out there, unless you’ve got some sort of a deal in Japan. And those are few and far between, and more and more [rare] every day.”

  • WWE Tag Team Division: On the Back Burner

    25

Near the end of last year, it appeared the WWE would once again focus on promoting its tag team division. After the championships were practically ignored and bounced around between random teams that were comprised of young talent for over a year, Team Hell No helped legitimize the titles once again.

Kane and Bryan held the titles for nearly a year before eventually dropping the straps to Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. The division picked up even more after the Shield got their hands on the titles and was straight up stacked for months. At one point the company was even relying a lot on six-man tag matches just to get as many guys as possible on the broadcast.

Team Hell No helped spark fan interest after a dull period in the tag division.
Team Hell No helped spark fan interest after a dull period in the tag division.

Near the end of last year, the Rhodes Brothers, the Shield (Rollins and Reigns), the Wyatt Family (Harper and Rowan), the Real Americans, the Usos, the Prime Time Players, and the New Age Outlaws were all in contention for the Tag Team titles at some point.

Since then, nearly every one of those teams has fallen off the face of the Earth, save the Usos who are now the champions. The Rhodes Brothers are barely competing together, the Shield is beyond competing for the championships at this point, the Wyatt Family has been involved in other affairs, both the Real Americans and Prime Time Players have split, and it appears the New Age Outlaws do not want to exercise that rematch clause after all.

The dissolution and promotion of various teams has resulted in the tag team division entering into a transitional state where the company needs to develop new teams or promote others from NXT. Think about the current teams on the roster. We have the Usos who are obviously champions, but who are their challengers? The only other teams even on the roster are Los Matadores, Ryback and Axel, and 3MB, unless I am forgetting someone.

Jeff Jarrett Allegedly Involved In Physical Altercation At Indy Event

    14

According to Examiner.com, Global Force Wrestling founder Jeff Jarrett was involved in a physical altercation at an indy show over the weekend involving the son of IWA Mid-South promoter Ian Rotten over money.

Jarrett was reportedly given half his appearance fee when he arrived at the show and was told he’d receive the remaining balance within 2-3 days. This sent Jarrett into a rage, where is he alleged to have been screaming and cursing at many in the locker room and then directed his rage against the 17 year old son of Rotten, John Calvin.

Eye witnesses say Jarrett either slapped John Calvin and knocked his glasses off or snatched them off his face during his rant and attempted to “hold them hostage to the point of breaking them,” before calming down.

“Jeff and Karen Jarrett were both intoxicated,” promoter Ian Rotten said. “I have a locker room full of people to back me up on that.”

Rotten has a spotty reputation when it comes to paying talent, with one indie veteran saying, “He is never going change brother, hell, he still owes me $50 from a show,” an indie veteran said.

“I am embarrassed,” Rotten said. “I know it sounds incredibly stupid but we forgot to get the advance out of PayPal.”

One wrestler, who asked not to be identified, said Jarrett was “out of control.”

“Jeff Jarrett will get his money in a couple of days as promised and he can use it for a defense attorney because I will be going to the sheriff tomorrow (Monday) to swear out a warrant for assault on a minor,” Rotten said.

Backstage Reaction To WWE Network Subscribers, Advice From Experts

    25

Last week, WWE announced that the WWE Network had signed up 677,287 subscribers since the launch on February 24th. The news sent WWE stock plummeting over 30% (currently trading under $21 as of Monday morning) and experts questioning whether WWE will in fact be able to reach 1 million subscribers by the end of the year.

According to industry sources, analysts were hoping for 1 million subscribers as of last week, with 850,000 seen as a baseline for what they’d be satisfied with. The actual figure of 677,287 was seen as acceptable, but a disappointment for WWE.

Aside from expanding to international markets in late 2014/early 2015, the Motley Fool financial website is advising WWE to start looking for original drama series like ‘Breaking Bad’ to bolster the Network’s content offering beyond simply pro wrestling shows.

Jeff Jarrett Talks About Global Force Wrestling

    6

Jeff Jarrett recently spoke to The Tennessean and commented on his new Global Force Wrestling promotion.

Jarrett continues to tout that the wrestling business is on the verge of another boom period, which makes it an opportune time for him to launch the new company.

“Our world is getting so much smaller with technology and we live off our phones, so information is shared instantaneously,” Jarrett said. “That’s right up wrestling fans’ alley, so they can swap stories from around the world.

“Wrestling, I wouldn’t say it left mainstream over the last 10 years, but it certainly wasn’t as prominent as it was in the late ’90s. I think it’s really about ready to step back into the mainstream.”

  • Jim Ross Blog: Is JR Retired From Broadcasting?, Sting/WWE, Ross Report, More

    6

The following are highlights from a new Jim Ross blog:

On Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley: “Looks like Manny Pacquiao will live to fight another day after a unanimous decision win over Tim Bradley Saturday night. Manny seemed to be in a must win situation as it relates to big money fights and to keep the faint hope alive that he may someday fight Floyd Mayweather. If pro boxing doesn’t include either Mayweather or Pacquiao in the conversation in some form, it seems as if the casual boxing fan isn’t overly engaged.”

On his upcoming “RINGSIDE” show in Toronto: “The Toronto media is embracing our show coming to TO on Friday May 9 at the Danforth Music Hall for one show only. I will let you know what we have planned once every thing is finalized but to say that we are going to be busy promoting the event would be an understatement.”

“Tickets for the Friday May 9 event are on sale at ticketmaster.ca and only a limited number of VIP Meet and Greet tickets remain. We will do the TO Meet & Greets with photo and autograph opportunities BEFORE our show in Toronto.”

“Our event is the night before the ROH-New Japan show in Toronto on Saturday May 10 of which I plan on attending as a fan.”

On his recent Ross Report podcast with Jake Roberts: “My interview with Jake Roberts that is airing now on the Ross Report Podcast has received amazing feedback especially from some of the many wrestlers and would be wrestlers who have heard it. Jake’s take on today’s in ring product, how it can be improved and the nuances of being a hero or a villian in the TV wrestling world are excellent. It’s like going to a college class on how to be a successful pro wrestler.”

On whether or not he has broadcasted his last event: “Not sure why but I’ve been getting an inordinate amount of Tweets @JRsBBQ and emails here at our Q&A section of the site asking if I have broadcast my last event. My best guess is no, or is it wishful thinking, but it likely won’t be where one would assume. If the answer ends up being that I’m done broadcasting live events then so be it as I lived my dreams and had a wonderful ‘run’ for which I’m thankful. The competitor/performer in me still feels that there is some unused fuel left in the tank. Things will become clearer in a few months as I’d love to try some thing new.”

On Sting to WWE: “Regarding Sting, I assume that he hasn’t signed with WWE only because WWE hasn’t announced it. Signing Sting would create positive news for WWE as he is a major star that WWE can monetize in a variety of ways if he comes aboard. I don’t see Sting even needing to wrestle to be a viable asset to WWE if he does sign with the company. If Sting did have one match it WWE it would need to be a long build, much anticipated one that has a significant payoff at a major event more specifically WM31.”

Apparently TNA veteran Chris Sabin is parting ways with the company. The former TNA World Heavyweight Champion’s contract with the company expired, as his last official booking was the “One Night Only” pay-per-view taping on Saturday night in Orlando, Florida.

According to one report, TNA did make Sabin an offer to re-sign, however much like the AJ Styles situation, it was reportedly a low-ball type of offer, one that Sabin turned down.

Additionally, Sabin has already started to reach out to independent pro wrestling promoters and is looking to begin taking bookings.

As noted recently, the next TNA veterans that could be on the way out of the company are Kurt Angle, Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian.
