Vince Russo Talks Ben Stiller Smoking Weed At RAW, Calls McMahon “Clueless”

    25

Vince Russo is now writing a new monthly column for the “What Culture” website, the first of which is now available. His debut effort is called “10 Things You Didn’t Know About Vince Russo.” Below are some highlights.

Ben Stiller Smoking Weed At RAW!

“When we had Ben Stiller on ‘Raw’, I couldn’t find him to produce the pre-tapes we needed. Where was he? How about smoking the WACY-TABACKY with Road Dog and X-Pac behind the trailers!!!

When we finally found Ben, who was promoting “Mystery Men” at the time, he was more than willing to take on a direct blow to the head courtesy of Double J’s, Jeff Jarrett’s guitar. To this day I don’t know if Ben agreed so willingly because he was a “mark”, or simply still high due to his earlier escapades with Sean Waltman and Brian James.”

Getting Threatened By Goldberg And Shawn Michaels

“I, myself, while never having gotten into an “actual” fight while serving my duties of Head Writer at WWE, WCW and TNA, was actually threatened on not one . . . but, two occasions. The first time was by Shawn Michaels after I cut a promo on him to his friend Triple H, for hijacking the WrestleMania 15 main event by getting into Steve Austin’s ear, who then talked Vince McMahon into changing the three way between him, the Rock and Mick Foley into a two-way, leaving Mick the odd man out. And, also a few years later by Bill Goldberg who was not happy when I needed him to do a job to Scott Steiner. Thankfully, I was able to get out of both predicaments completely unscathed.

In another backstage ‘confrontation’ I also once saved Sunny’s life, while putting my own on the line! I actually attempted to stand between Luna, and her target which she INTENDED TO KILL!!! The encounter ended with Luna spearing me into a laundry cart. I swear, Luna could have taken 50% of the MALE roster in a fight during her hey-day.

Luna, bless her heart, had it out for ALL the divas who in her mind weren’t “actually” wrestlers. She despised Sable, and made it very difficult for her to find her way early on. But, if you knew Luna, you loved her, she really did have a big heart. That was just the “old school wrestler” in her that would rear its ugly head from time to time. I’m also proud to say that about three years ago, I pulled “Awesome Kong” off radio personality “Bubba the Love Sponge”.”

Stone Cold Didn’t Want To Do The Beer Truck Angle!

“In the epic scene on “Raw”, when Steve Austin drove a beer truck into the arena, I actually had to talk Steve into it! The Texas Rattlesnake said he just wanted to enter in his pick-up. He didn’t “see” the beer truck. However, once the segment was produced, I think Steve totally understand the impact that it was going to have on the fans for many years to come. It was truly, one of the most classic scenes in the history of “Monday Night Raw”. Thankfully I talked him round, he didn’t go with the pick up, riding in instead with the beer truck, driving his way into wrestling history.”

Vince McMahon Didn’t Have A Clue About Mainstream Publicity

“In the Attitude Era, the hottest thing at that time on MTV was Tom Green. He was light years ahead of the “Reality TV” boom that would follow many years later. I wanted him to be revealed as the man responsible for Raw’s GTV!

Unfortunately, the idea never came into fruition because Vince McMahon had NO IDEA who TOM GREEN was! So instead of “GREEN TV”, it became “GOLDUST TV”.

That wasn’t the first time that Vince wasn’t “exactly” up on his pop culture. A few years later I had shot pre-tapes with “Dancin’” Steve Richards and the Blue Meanie as a parody of the “Blair Witch Project”. We called it the “Blonde Bitch Project”. The idea was to take an entertaining “shot” at Sable who had abruptly decided to leave the company at the time. Once again, the pre-tapes never saw the light of day because Vince had “no idea” what the “Blair Witch Project” was. The pre-tapes, that never aired, were shot ON LOCATION at WWE writer Ed Ferrara’s house… and backyard.

But wait… there are even YET MORE EXAMPLES of Vince McMahon’s little knowledge of the HERE and NOW. Here are a few more gems!

A friend of mine in the Public Relations Department at the WWE, pitched Vince to have legendary Eagles guitarist JOE WALSH perform “Rocky Mountain Way” at WrestleMania XI. Vince respectfully declined because he had never heard of the song, “Rocky Mountain Way”, or its singer/writer JOE WALSH!!!

Last, but not least, upon his arrival in the WWE, we shot a series of vignettes with Val Venus and LEGENDARY porn star Jenna Jameson. We even went as far as even having Jenna BUCK NAKED in Bruce’s Prichard’s Jacuzzi with Val. Upon seeing the footage, Vince decided against airing them, because in his words, Jenna was “ugly”.”

  • “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan Talks Legends House Season 1, Thursday’s Reunion, More

    0

The following are highlights of a new Bleacher Report interview with “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan:

The emotional season finale of Legends House: “I don’t think that was anything that was really planned. That just goes to show how close the eight of us, or the seven of us and Tony (Atlas), got over that period of time, being away from our families and just being together. I don’t’ think anyone expected that episode to go the way it did. I think Jimmy (Hart) started the ball rolling when he shared what had happened in his life and I told a story I very seldom tell. It was very traumatic for me. And then Pat went. It just goes to show how close we became.”

The Legends House reunion that was filmed earlier this year: “It was great to see everybody. It was the first time all eight of us have been together since. I had seen (Roddy) Piper an Jimmy Hart on the road and I’ve talked to Hillbilly (Jim) on the phone, but for the eight of us to get together again was a lot of fun. It was even kind of good to see Tony. The first two minutes.”

How he wants fans to remember him: “I think the character is just an extension of my personality. My old buddy Bret Hart always said “I’m the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be.” I always say “I’m Hacksaw Duggan. I try hard.” I think that people saw that in me. That’s why I can still go to the ring today. People see Hacksaw is an extension of my personality. What’s out there is genuine. When I’m cheering “USA, USA” it’s coming from the heart.”

  • Jim Neidhart Talks Post-Montreal Screwjob Run In WCW, Bad WWE Gimmick, More

    12

The following are highlights of a new In Your Head Wrestling Radio interview with Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart:

What was the story behind your ‘Who’ gimmick in the WWF? “Oh brother; I’ll tell you, that was some real BS. I think it was more like a little punishment thing. I think they found some of that horrible devil weed in my system, and finding the devil weed they suspend you, let you go home for a couple of weeks to rest up. They threw me back on the road and said OK, we’re going to torture him a little bit; we’re going to take that pink and black off you and throw you in a yellow mask as a single…If you never worked with a mask on before, wow. It’s a big, big difference; you can’t see. You had no peripheral vision…If you’re wrestling with that mask on; you have to look at your opponent constantly. It’s way, way harder to wrestle with a mask on than it is without, because you have to tell the people what you’re doing a little bit without actually looking at them; you have to use way, way more body language, which is really different. I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody, walking into a big venue sold out and you’re trying to do a single with a mask on and you don’t know what the hell you’re doing.”

What were your feelings on your WCW run (after the Montreal Screwjob)? “I’ve never made so much money doing absolutely f**king nothing. It was ridiculous. I made almost $300,000 in twelve months to do absolutely nothing, and accomplish nothing. They didn’t know what they were doing; it was ridiculous…It’s a shame; they had so much talent going through there but they didn’t have anybody that knew what the hell they were doing. Eric Bischoff, I guess, was in charge with Hogan and that crew, and I thought the nWo thing was kind of cute, but they never had any real direction toward it.”

The Rock Reveals His Hercules Arms Workout

WWE legend The Rock has revealed his #TeamHercules arms workout:

Updates On WWE Firing RAW’s Head Writer, Additional Budget Cuts

    13

As reported earlier this week, WWE’s former RAW head writer Jay Gibson was the latest employee to be let go by the company. According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Gibson’s departure was not a result of the company’s ongoing budget cuts.

Gibson had only been with the company for about 5 months and didn’t actually write the RAW scripts himself. He was basically in charge of managing the writing staff, delegating assignments. There were a lot of people who felt that Gibson did not have a good grasp on the WWE product or the wrestling business in general.

Since Gibson wasn’t doing much writing, his release is not as significant as the initial reports indicated.

Despite Gibson’s release not being directly related to budget cuts, WWE continues to slash various aspects of the production spending. WWE is no longer flying in NXT talent to play Adam Rose’s Rosebuds on television. NXT talent will only be used on Raw or Smackdown if they are within driving distance from Orlando, and can travel to the arenas themselves. Instead, WWE is now using local indy talent to play the Rosebuds. This began at last week’s RAW and SmackDown tapings from Green Bay and Minneapolis, were independent wrestlers Dysfunction, Justin Dredd, Chase McCoy, Joey Avalon and Melanie Cruise were used as Rosebuds.

It was reported exclusively by WrestleZone.com on Wednesday that WWE is no longer paying for the TV crew’s tour buses.

Brodus Clay Shares His Thoughts On John Cena

    32

Recently released WWE Superstar Brodus Clay was a guest on The Roman Show and talked about what it was like working with John Cena:

“He is a pro. He comes to work everyday,” he said. “He is straight forward and tells you exactly what it is. One of my things was I didn’t get to work a match with him. I would have dropped the weight I did and keep the muscle I have.”

“He is a great leader in terms of he talks it; he walks it. He is the face of the WWE and likely so. He (Cena) gave us all an opportunity to train and have the same training regiment. The training of the NBA and NFL with Olympic lifts for maintenance, for power, better cardiovascular. He was on the forefront. He gave guys an opportunity.”

    Here’s the interview:

Curt Hawkins Talks About His WWE Release, NXT, His Wrestling School

    6

Former WWE Superstar Curt Hawkins was a guest this week on the Shining Wizards Network. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

His Create A Pro Wrestling School: “Not being booked in The WWE, I became completely paranoid and fearful of being called on the road and being out of ring shape. And any wrestler knows that you can’t really duplicate what we do in the ring conditioning-wise. You can’t duplicate wrestling unless you wrestle. To be honest with you, I just wanted a place to train. One night, Pat Buck and I were just spitballing at dinner after a training session at The Pro Wrestling Syndicate School in Rahway, NJ, and I said I’d love to open a school in New York, and Pat Said he’d love to do it with me and I was like, “ok” and it just caught fire from there. It was something I was always going to do and it was always a dream of mine to open a wrestling school, and it might have happened a little sooner than I ever thought, but now that I have it and we’re cooking on all cylinders and I get the satisfaction of teaching guys, and seeing guys develop and understand stuff. I can’t wait ’til these guys to have matches.”

Working With Top Stars Like Edge & Undertaker: “It was a once in a lifetime, indescribable, priceless learning experience. I can tell you honestly that I probably pitched 400 ideas the whole time I was in WWE and that was the ONE time they said, “Yeah sure” when we pitched can we be Edge’s henchmen. You know we’ll look like him and they actually went with it. That’s how hard it is to get things going. I don’t know what it is or why they say yes or no. Sometimes I feel like they need to be the ones that have the idea for it to work it but I’m forever grateful for it because the opportunity was indescribable. I mean, I wrestled Shawn Michaels & Ric Flair in a steel cage in Chicago. I’ve wrestled The Undertaker more times than I can remember. I basically shadowed Edge for an entire year seeing him prepare for world title matches on PPVs and WrestleMania. I saw it all first hand. It was an incredible learning environment that could never be duplicated again. I’ll always be grateful for that.”

NXT: “I loved NXT and performing and being a part of the shows. The live arena crowd is absolutely awesome. They are lively and passionate fans and that’s all you can ask for as a performer. I had no interest in being a part of NXT and training or things like that because I’m ten years in and I don’t think I need to be in there going over headlocks and armdrags, or taking unnecessary bumps that I don’t need to be taking.”

His WWE release: “It was expected to an extent. Really I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. They weren’t using me and I was just living this life of sitting and waiting around and not able to commit to things in my real life. Like if I wanted to go a wedding, I never know if they (WWE) are going to come calling. It was kind of annoying, to be honest with you. And anyone that knows me knows that I’m just crazy about wrestling, and I’ve had my pulse on the Indy scene and it’s something I’ve been dying to dive into and now I finally can.”

  • Rumored Participants For Second MITB Match, Other MITB PPV Rumors

    32

The main event for the June 29th WWE Money In The Bank pay-per-view will be the ladder match for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship, which features John Cena, Roman Reigns, Randy Orton, Sheamus, Cesaro, Bray Wyatt and Alberto Del Rio. As noted recently, Cena or Reigns (and Cesaro as a long-shot) will likely come out on top, as the winner is the likely candidate for Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam.

Also confirmed for the 6/29 PPV is a WWE Tag-Team Championship match with The Usos defending against Luke Harper and Erick Rowan of The Wyatt Family.

The second ladder match, which was made official recently and will be for the usual Money In The Bank briefcase, as of right now only features Seth Rollins. Additional names rumored for the match include Dean Ambrose, Big E., Rob Van Dam, Bo Dallas, as well as Bad News Barrett and Dolph Ziggler, the latter two of which will either be part of that match or in an Intercontinental Championship match with each other.

Additionally, the direction for the WWE Divas Championship match at Money In The Bank seems to be Paige defending against Naomi of The Funkadactyls.

  • SummerSlam Plans Finalized: Brock Lesnar’s Return, Cesaro

    56

The plans for the top of the card for this year’s SummerSlam have reportedly been finalized in recent weeks. While obviously things can — and usually do — change a hundred times between now and then, especially in the case of a big show like SummerSlam, the company has apparently decided on the key directions they want to go for this year’s big summer event.

Originally the plans called for a Daniel Bryan vs. Brock Lesnar match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the show, however with Bryan’s neck injury and uncertain in-ring future, that idea is said to be off the table.

As things stand now, Lesnar will still challenge for the title upon returning, with the idea that Lesnar — coming off ending Undertaker’s streak — going for the title will make the belt seem more important.

The most likely scenario for SummerSlam would be Lesnar challenging whomever wins the title at the 6/29 Money In The Bank pay-per-view. With that being the plan, it’s expected that a top baby face — likely John Cena or Roman Reigns — ends up winning the title at the pay-per-view in two weeks.

There is a long shot that Cesaro could win the title, seeing is how there’s been a long-standing plan for Lesnar and Cesaro — the two “Paul Heyman Guys” — to eventually collide with each other. While there haven’t been any indications that the company plans on turning Cesaro into a face anytime soon, it is considered a possibility considering the built-in story line.

It should be noted that Heyman, when referring to the Money In The Bank ladder match for the title on 6/29, said it was a “spoiler” that Cesaro would win, the same word he used when promising fans that Lesnar would break Undertaker’s streak at WrestleMania XXX.

Huge Update On Daniel Bryan’s WWE Status, Plans For His Return & More

    39

As things stand right now, WWE is running with the mindset that Daniel Bryan will not be ready in time for their Battleground pay-per-view, which takes place on July 20th in Tampa, Florida.

The current working plan is for Bryan to return at SummerSlam in one of the main events, although it’s unlikely that he’ll be working against Brock Lesnar in the title match on the show, which was originally the plan.

SummerSlam Plans Finalized: Brock Lesnar’s Return, Cesaro

In fact, WWE isn’t even sure Bryan will be available in time for SummerSlam. They do, however, expect him back in time for the Night Of Champions pay-per-view, which takes place on September 21st in Nashville, Tennessee.

It is believed that Bryan will work a stipulation match with Kane — possibly the originally planned “Buried Alive” match since the “Stretcher Match” was used on RAW this week — upon his return, as from a story line standpoint, he’s the guy who put Bryan on the shelf.

WWE is currently advertising Bryan for shows in mid-August. He’s not officially included in the advertising for SummerSlam, but is included in advertisements for the live event in San Jose, California on August 16th, which is the event that takes place the night before SummerSlam. He’s also booked to appear on one of the house show tours the weekend following SummerSlam on the West Coast, and television tapings after SummerSlam.

  • Jim Ross Blog: Two MITB Ladder Matches, WWE Network Marketing & More

    8

The following are highlights from the latest Jim Ross blog:

On WWE Network marketing: “WWE should target the older fan who may have ceased becoming a regular, weekly viewer in recent years as their primary target demo to subscribe to their WWE Network. The older fan has more disposable income and makes more long term buying decisions than do the younger crowd who still lives at home or are still students. If my take is somewhat accurate then hearing more about the classic, footage from those endorsing the product is important. It would be good to hear what Cole, Lawler and JBL watch every week on the WWE Network as I feel that it would remind many fans on what they are missing.”

On two Money In The Bank ladder matches: “Having two MITB Ladder matches is a unique booking for one WWE PPV event. Quality control and exclusivity of spots, stunts, etc is extremely imperative plus the first MITB match of the night get[s] the fresher of the audience. I’d assume the WWE World Title Ladder match will go on last which means that every participant in that bout must watch the first MITB contest. Communication between management and the talents on this particular event is especially imperative. The WWE Title MITB has seemingly more ‘catchers’ than ‘flyers’ so one can expect the other MITB match to be loaded with ‘daredevils.'”
