Backstage News On Low Morale In TNA: Heat On Dixie Carter & Creative

33

There is a lot of concern backstage in TNA about how the company is being run and whether they will be able to secure a new television deal with Spike TV, a factor widely viewed as essential to their survival. A recent visit by Janice Carter and an attorney from Panda Energy to TNA headquarters in Nashville caught everybody surprise, adding more fuel to the speculation that the circumstances are growing dire. Here’s an overview of the current issues:

– TNA’s current television contract with Spike TV expires in October and there have been no indications that a new deal will be made. The last time TNA had a TV deal with Spike expiring in October, the company had already re-signed by this time (late April). TNA is running 3 expensive shows in New York City’s Manhattan Center as a way to impressive Spike TV officials with the rabid New York Crowd, but many are questioning whether this is a good use of their limited resources.

– TNA President Dixie Carter is getting a lot of heat about the overall direction of the company. During a recent meeting in Nashville, TNA’s lack of presence in New Orleans during WrestleMania XXX weekend was a major topic she had to defend.

– Talent is upset with TNA’s creative team, with the general feeling being that there has been a breakdown in communication. Additionally, a lot of people feel that “Big” John Gaburick is in way over his head and does not have sufficient experience to be handling creative.

– As for Eric Young’s title win, very few people knew about the decision in advance. TNA denies that it was a rip off of Daniel Bryan winning the WWE World Heavyweight championship and that they simply wanted to surprise fans on the last live episode of Impact before taping several weeks of programming.

DDP Talks About Jake & Hall Entering the WWE Hall Of Fame, Ultimate Warrior Memories

9

Diamond Dallas page recently appeared on Wrestling 365 hosted by Alfonso Marimon and Jon Curry. Here are some highlights of what DDP said about:

The Energy Backstage at the WWE Hall of Fame:

“The Hall of Fame was really cool, getting there was the journey, the whole thing with Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts and Scott Hall. It was great to see both those guys be inducted, they both put a lot of work in. It’s one of those things, so many people bring it up, you get to the end and go, okay we got here, awesome, dreams do come true, but both of those guys are still addicts, so they fight it daily. I’ve had people come up to me and say dude you’ve cured Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts and I’m like what?, no, I never did that. All I did was help him, guide him and put him in a positive environment. Jake could fall down tomorrow and he does from time to time. He doesn’t live with me anymore, I can’t be his keeper, I just hope he can stay on the right track, but someone like Jake or Scott, either one of those guys could fall and hopefully not too far, because we can fall too far and then the promoters and everyone don’t want to deal with that stuff, but as of right now, it was a glorious moment.”

How It Felt To See Jake Roberts & Scott Hall Inducted:

“It actually felt great man, for Scott’s speech I went out in front and sat with my girl and my ex-wife Kimberly, they were both there, they’re friends and we watched Kevin (Nash) come out and then Scott and afterwards I went backstage again. To be in that whole…..That’s like the highest honor you can get in our business, I think it even crosses over World Championships to that next level. There’s still certain people that belong and should be in there and that will always be the case, but eventually, sometimes that takes a while, everyone gets their turn. I said it 18 months earlier, we set the big pie in the sky dream that we would be on this (Hall of Fame) stage on this night.

“Jake didn’t think that was possible, but Jake had to go through a lot of changes for that to happen and he did and it was a journey. We’ve done the movie, that’s where the movie ends, I’m sure we’ll have a little trail-off, because I don’t know exactly what will happen in the next 6 months, 8 months before we’ve got the film completely tied up. I’ve been filming with director and co-producer Steve Yu the resurrection of Jake The Snake’s story and that details Scott Hall coming in and where he was when he started and that journey and a lot of it is really fun and inspirational, while some of it is dark. There’s dark moments man and there’s times where the 3 of us did not get along.”

Memories Of The Ultimate Warrior:

“The first time I was on a card or an event with the Warrior was at WrestleMania 6 and I didn’t get the gig, my car did, I was Diamond Dallas Chauffeur for Rhythm N Blues and I got to meet a lot of the boys. I was in the AWA at the time as a manager, but everybody dreamed of being at WrestleMania, this is the spot and I’m there. I may be driving a Cadillac, but you know what, none of my other buddies are. Hulk Hogan came up to me and was so nice to me and talked about my gimmick and we talked for about 10 minutes and it was amazing.

“Really, the only superstar I wanted to meet that evening and didn’t get the chance to was Warrior, that would happen 10 years later when he came in in WCW to start up his feud with Hulk Hogan and when he got to TV, I was planning on going by, I was looking forward to shaking his hand and meeting him, maybe having some kind of a relationship with him and one of the agents came by and said DDP, you want to meet The Ultimate Warrior and I said absolutely, I’ll be down there later, but the agent said that he sort of asked me to come by and grab you and Goldberg and see if you guys would want to meet him and I was like he’s requesting US to come by, sure, I’ll come with you.

“I walked down there and gave him a big hug and he talked about how much fun he’s had watching us (DDP and Goldberg) and how we made him want to get back in the business. The main event that they would be working towards would be Halloween Havoc and this story shows how anything is possible in this world. 10 years later, from working at the Skydome, being a chauffeur and watching Hogan vs. Warrior for the title to watching them 10 years later, but this time I’m going for the World Championship against Goldberg.

“It took a fan writing me that on Twitter to really put that in perspective and I was like, woah, I never really put that together. I saw him at WrestleCon last year and we talked for a little bit and he was so blown away by what I was doing with DDP Yoga and Scott and Jake and he said, you’re doing God’s work man. He’s a big God man, I am too, I’m not the big preacher guy, but I’m a big God man. For him to give me the shoutout at the Hall of Fame for him being inducted, not once, not twice, but like 4 times and it was a little tongue-in-cheek funny, but he respected what I was doing. I never got a chance to thank him for that, because that was just so cool of him to do that.”

  • Roman Reigns: Ready for Prime Time?

    113

When the Shield debuted over a year ago, Roman Reigns was like the shadowy muscle of the group. He was the least featured member of the trio. He was given few lines during their promos. Yet he was always there to deliver a devastating spear or triple powerbomb when needed.

With the rich indy wrestling history of both Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose, it is no surprise that they were expected to carry most of the load during the early days of the stable. After all, Roman Reigns was a former football player and started wrestling in 2010, whereas both Ambrose and Rollins had been wrestling since the early 2000’s.

Reigns does have a rich family history though, as he is a member of the famous Anoa’i family that includes past superstars such as Yokozuna, Rikishi, and The Rock, so it is not like he was a complete stranger to the world of wrestling.

After his dominating performance at last year's Survivor Series, it seemed obvious that there were big plans for Roman Reigns.
After his dominating performance at last year’s Survivor Series, it seemed obvious that there were big plans for Roman Reigns.

A little over a year ago, it appeared that Dean Ambrose was the member being groomed for a breakout solo career. He was considered the de facto of the group and is the only member of the group to win a solo title while Rollins and Reigns shared the Tag Team Championships.

Something changed last fall, however, and it appeared that Reigns was the one gaining momentum in the Shield after Ambrose seemed enter a lull. Coincidentally enough, it was as soon as Rollins and Reigns lost their championships that his push began. The first hint that he was going to be a breakout star was at last year’s Survivor Series, where he was the sole survivor and dominated the competition, eliminating four opponents during the contest.

Reigns later eliminated the most competitors in Royal Rumble history during the 2014 contest and he has not looked back since. With the Shield now entering into a program with the newly reformed Evolution, there are reports that the ultimate goal of the feud is to set up a matchup between Triple H and Roman Reigns at this year’s SummerSlam. The reports make one wonder: is Roman Reigns ready for a massive solo push?

Mick Foley Explains Why He Isn’t Signing A New WWE Legends Deal

    51

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley posted the following on Facebook explaining why he’s not signing a new WWE Legends deal:

“To deal..or not to deal – that is the question. As some of you may have heard, at this point, I am opting not to sign my Legends Marketing Deal, which gives #WWE the right to market my likeness on video games and action figures. I’ll be writing in more detail about this in the next week or so, but it would be fair to say that, despite strong sales, I have found the payoffs for the past two video games to be extremely weak – in the 25% range of what most talent was expecting.

Last year, the explanation had something to do with the video game company going bankrupt – a real shame for me, since I was heavily featured as three characters from the “Attitude” era, complete with voice work. I haven’t heard this year’s explanation yet, but, personally. I think the #WWE just wants to see if the talent will accept a far lower percentage than had previously been given. If so, it would proably be a good business move for #WWE, since very few current wrestlers are going to jeapordize their standing with the company by offering resistance – and most legends will probably come to feel like anything they get from merchandise is better than nothing.

As for me: until I hear a valid reason, I’m opting out.”

Backstage Update On Bray Wyatt Turning Babyface, Plans For The Shield

    99

Despite the feeling coming out of last night’s RAW being that Bray Wyatt is in store for a babyface turn, the plan is to keep him a heel for the time being.

The thought behind The Wyatt Family right now is to keep them heel until The Shield turns heel, so the two sides will continue to remain on opposite sides of the fence, with the obvious exception of Roman Reigns, who as noted will eventually be split off and turned into a singles babyface competitor.

  • Backstage Update On Confusion Over Adam Rose’s WWE TV Debut

    23

As previously reported, there was a belief online prior to last night’s RAW that Adam Rose would be making his television debut on the show. While his bus was at the building, it has also been at the building last week, and generally travels to all cities as it’s the bus that the crew uses for work.

All of the Rose vignettes, which were filmed on that bus, were shot prior to WrestleMania XXX in New Orleans earlier this month.

Bully Ray Talks About Getting Into Acting, TNA Talent Headed to Japan

    2

    – TNA stars Kazarian and Abyss will be taking on The Great Muta and Tajiri at the May 4th Wrestle-1 event in Tokyo, according to a report at PWInsider.com.

    – TNA star Bully Ray was recently interviewed by Xpose Entertainment and spoke about his desire to get into acting:

“I’m looking into films and other things right now … I am looking to branch my career out a little bit more into acting … I think I fit certain roles, I’ll use as an example a guy like James Gandolfini in ‘The Sopranos’. I think that type of role I could pull off real well, just with my natural personality.

I just did a television show for Nickelodeon. The show is called ‘See Dad Run’ and it stars Scott Baio and it’s on nick@nite. So I did an episode with him and it went really well and I had an extremely positive experience out there in Hollywood, I was there about a week working at Paramount Studios, I got to work with Scott Marshall and Garry Marshall, and I got to work on the same set as ‘Happy Days’. It was a tremendously positive experience.”

Former WWE Writer Talks About Meeting Vince McMahon, CM Punk & More

    1

Former WWE creative writer Chris “Big Dick Johnson” DeJoseph recently took part in an interview with PWMania.com. DeJoseph speaks on several topics from his time in WWE, including the first time he met Vince McMahon, CM Punk’s departure and more. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Meeting Vince McMahon: “First time I met Vince was cool. I got him the first of many coffees. He thanked me. I introduced myself to Mr. McMahon. He told me to call him Vince.”

Last-Minute Booking Changes in WWE: “Last minute changes happened daily. I’ve given Edge a promo for segment one, 5 minutes before RAW went on the air. He hit a home run. During Edge and Vickie’s Wedding Reception we were literally writing the show as we went. I would sneak their copy out to the stage during breaks.

Backstage Issues in WWE: “Kid Kash cornered me once. He was released soon after. And I once got in a fight in a limousine with a high power executive.”

CM Punk: “I think Punk is gone…for now.”

Other topics discussed include Stephanie McMahon and Triple H taking over Vince McMahon, what he’s been up to since his WWE departure, Michael Hayes, his first day in WWE, his favorite angles and more.

Jim Ross Blogs About Monday’s WWE RAW

    6

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog at JRsBaBQ.com with some thoughts on last night’s RAW from Baltimore, MD. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Daniel Bryan, Kane & Stephanie: “The Bryan-Kane segment was a memorable start to the program and plants a vivid seed for their match at Extreme Rules. I expect this match to outperform many fan’s expectations. Wondering if we will ever see any physicality down the road from Brie and Stephanie. Seems like it’s there if WWE wants to go that route at some point.

Evolution vs. The Shield: “Nice confrontation featuring the Shield and Evolution. Funny how many on Twitter (@JRsBBQ) want Ric Flair back in HHH”s entity. I don’t see it happening. Great opportunity for this six man tag to steal the show at Extreme Rules.”

John Cena: “Unusual position to put the face of WWE, John Cena, in with the fan vote and the fans voted the absolute worse case scenario and that was for Cena to face all three members of the Wyatt Family. The 3 vs. 1 vote/mismatch did equate to some compelling TV and back in the TV14 days would have likely seen Cena bloody. I am not endorsing the blood but simply stating a matter of fact as it relates to the ‘old days.'”

Bray Wyatt: “I’m not clear as to why featured villain Bray Wyatt has the audience singing along with him, especially a hymn, but I also don’t know the creative plan for the talented, third generation performer. Nonetheless, I’m interested in where the Wyatts are traveling. Perhaps that in itself is the point. I will be even more interested in the Wyatts if Bray beats Cena at Extreme Rules.”

Jonathan Coachman Speaks On Prank Vince Pulled On Him, Leaving WWE, More

    14

The following are highlights of a Back Sports Page interview with Jonathan Coachman:

On whether or not his time in WWE helped him with ESPN: “It was a lot. Every time I sit on set on all the big shows I know, whether it’s on the 11PM Sports Center or the Sunday NFL show, everything I do, I find myself mentally referring back to the things I learned working with Vince McMahon and everybody in the WWE. People do not understand how difficult it is to entertain, act and make people believe, when most people don’t want to believe it is true. The one thing about working with the Rock, and I have people mentioning it every day to me, is about the skits that we did for so long. To see the evolution of our relationship going from him abusing me to him coming back and us doing things as we were at the same level, was awesome for me. The decision for me to get into the ring and get involved on a physical aspect was a difficult one for me. It was one I felt I needed to do because I had the size of 6’3 and 240lbs and it was something that would earn me the respect of the boys, while making me one of them. What I didn’t’t realize was what would happen and that I would learn to entertain on the highest level… the timing, how you say things, your facial expressions, you know all the little things I utilize today. I wish all of our anchors could go through all that training, knowing that Vince is watching your every move and he is ready to shred you and rip you apart. I lasted almost ten years in that environment, and because of that, it allowed me to be ahead of the game when I got here. I felt like I was working for Mr. Rodgers compared to Mr. McMahon. The different things I did over my career with WWE, has helped me when I am doing things at the highest level. ESPN is the highest level and that is not lost on me, and I do not forget that. Every single day when I come to work weather I am sick or I am healthy. I’m out to give it all I got because I want to improve, because I care. I love people who care and who show me that they want to give an effort in life, whatever it is, because you know you are gonna get my best effort.”

On personal stories he has regarding Vince McMahon: “Vince McMahon is a very unique guy, and he does not trust a lot of people. He had trust in me and because of that, he wanted me around him a lot, whether I was hosting something or not. If he wanted to yell and couldn’t find someone that he couldn’t yell at, he would yell at me just to get it out of his system. Because of Vince having the ability to trust me, and the fact I did anything he needed me to do, the first time we went over to the middle east to Afghanistan, I was one of the 18 people who got to go to represent WWE because I was able to talk, and get in the ring if I needed to. I did get in the ring as I had a match with Ric Flair over there, and I lost to him via the figure four leg lock, and it is a highlight in my career. Some people call it the figure two, but it is what it is (laughs). While there, I got to see firsthand what life was like out in the desert. It was a scary, as we were in the line of the fire, and we went in places that nobody really got to see up close. Those are some the greatest experiences I will look back on because of that relationship I had with him. I will be indebted to him. We get along great to this day, and if there was an opportunity to be on Monday Night Raw and do Sports Center at the same time I would that in a heartbeat.”

On factors that led to his decision to leave WWE: “Once I found out my daughter was on her way, that was what made the decision to leave. There was a lot thought that went into this decision, but at the end of the day, I wanted to be home with my children. I am lucky enough to have two children and I home everyday with them. Also, there were a lot of bad habits that I developed over the last decade, especially when I was in the ring. I knew if I wanted to survive and live a productive, healthy life, then I needed to get out that environment. The overriding feeling was that I really missed sports. I was craving sports. In my last three years in WWE I signed a deal knowing that I had three years to try and get out. I knew how difficult it would be to find a regular sports job after working in pro wrestling for so long. I spent a good portion of that three year contract working at MSG network in NY and CBS college sports. I was working almost every day creating a bridge, because I was not going to go from WWE to ESPN; it was not going to happen. The family aspect opened my eyes a bit, as the travel became difficult. I began dreading going to the airport and I don’t want to do something I would dread .I was burnt out.”

On an infamous prank Vince McMahon pulled on him: “What you read and heard was 100% true. The thing about WWE is you have to be accepted on many different levels. From 2003 on, I was one of the boys. If you were willing to put your neck on the line and get in the ring, that separates you from everybody else. Up until that point, I had to be accepted into the crew, so to speak. Basically, Jerry Brisco came up to me in 2001 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and he said he wanted me to run a football pool. $10 to pick all the games, and everybody did it. And I started on a Tuesday, it was a Smackdown taping, I’ll never forget it. I had my own room I did interviews in, and all the sudden two cops show up. They were very serious, and said I understand you’re running a gambling pool. You sold one to one of our undercover cops here. It’s a felony in North Carolina and we’re going to have to take you in. So we’re walking down the hallway, and we stop in front of Vince’s office, and they said we should probably let him know because you’re not going to be here for a while. We walk in and it’s Vince, Triple H, Stephanie, The Rock, Kevin Dunn and Jerry Brisco. I should have known that, with Jerry in the room, something was going on, but I was so terrified because I was 26 years old. The real cops proceeded to tell Vince they’ve caught me in a gambling pool and we need to take him downtown. Vince got in my face, and he was an inch away from my nose. He was cursing, telling me my priorities were bad, and spending company time to run a gambling pool. This entire riff lasted 45 minutes. At the end of the office bit, the officer said it was $1,500 to get me out, and Vince said F-no, he’s on his own. They handcuffed me, and I asked if there was anything I could put over my face. Vince threw me a pair of sweaty gym shorts that got stuck on my face. I walked out of the office and the first person I see is The Undertaker. He looks at me with shock, and it was so real because no one else was in on it except those people in the office. They walked me out, and all the fans could see me and they drove me about a mile down the road, and got a call on the radio that they had to come back to pick up something. They turn around, come back, and everyone’s there with Vince in front of everybody laughing their asses off. Greatest rip in the history of the business, and for about 10 minutes I literally walked to a place in the building and started crying. I thought my career was over. I thought how can I tell my dad I got fired over a $10 football pool.”

On the energy backstage at the WWE Hall Of Fame: “The Hall of Fame was really cool, getting there was the journey, the whole thing with Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Scott Hall. It’s one of those things, so many people bring it up, you get to the end and go, okay we got here, awesome, dreams do come true, but both of those guys are still addicts, so they fight it daily. I’ve had people come up to me and say dude you’ve cured Jake “The Snake” Roberts and I’m like what?, no, I never did that.

On how it felt personally for him to see Jake and Scott be inducted: “It actually felt great man, for Scott’s speech I went out in front and sat with my girl and my ex-wife Kimberly, they were both there, they’re friends and we watched Kevin (Nash) come out and then Scott and afterwards I went backstage again. Jake didn’t think that was possible, but Jake had to go through a lot of changes for that to happen and he did and it was a journey.

On the passing of Ultimate Warrior and his memories: “The first time I was on a card or an event with the Warrior was at WrestleMania 6 and I didn’t get the gig, my car did, I was Diamond Dallas Chauffeur for Rhythm N Blues and I got to meet a lot of the boys. Really, the only superstar I wanted to meet that evening and didn’t get the chance to was Warrior, that would happen 10 years later when he came in in WCW to start up his feud with Hulk Hogan and when he got to TV, I was planning on going by, I was looking forward to shaking his hand and meeting him, maybe having some kind of a relationship with him and one of the agents came by and said DDP, you want to meet The Ultimate Warrior and I said absolutely, I’ll be down there later, but the agent said that he sort of asked me to come by and grab you and Goldberg and see if you guys would want to meet him and I was like he’s requesting US to come by, sure, I’ll come with you. I walked down there and gave him a big hug and he talked about how much fun he’s had watching us (DDP and Goldberg) and how we made him want to get back in the business. The main event that they would be working towards would be Halloween Havoc and how anything is possible in this world. 10 years later, from working at the Skydome, being a chaufeur and watching Hogan vs. Warrior for the title to watching them 10 years later, but this time I’m going for the World Championship against Goldberg. It took a fan writing me that on Twitter to really put that in perspective and I was like, woah, I never really put that together.
