Mick Foley Posts Lengthy Blog Criticizing WWE Royal Rumble PPV

68

WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley posted the following blog sharing his feelings on the WWE’s booking of the Royal Rumble pay-per-view on Sunday night.

HEY WWE….WHAT THE F?

Yes, I’m going to put a brick through my TV. It’s just going to have to wait until tomorrow. I had every intention of putting a brick through my TV tonight, after seeing that Daniel Bryan was not even entered in the Royal Rumble match, let alone going to win the thing. But, upon seeing their dad with a brick in his hand, my younger children got a little bit scared, thinking their dad had lost his mind. A rather spirited debate about the wisdom of following through on the promise to put a brick through my TV ensued with my wife – and, as is usually the case in marital debates, I, being the husband, did not emerge victorious. Honestly, the points she made about mercury and glass fragments everywhere were pretty good ones.

But I’m still going to put a brick through my TV. It’s just going to have to wait until tomorrow – when the kids are in school, and I can take the TV outside the house for the actual throwing of the brick. Granted, it’s not nearly as dramatic as doing it live, right after the Rumble, but at least I will be keeping my word.

As I mentioned on Twitter, I’ve never felt so disgusted at the conclusion of a WWE (or any) PPV. Like many of you out there, I just don’t get it. This Daniel Bryan thing is a phenomenon. You get it. I get it. The fans in Pittsburgh (yes, I was thinking of writing “RIGHT TH…but I’m just not in a cheap pop mood) got it. But tonight, for the first time, I had to admit to myself that the powers that be are just not going to get it. And that makes me sad. I’m just honestly sad, just flat out fucking sad (yes, I dropped an F-bomb there to emphasize how F’ing sad I am for the guys who bust their butts night in and night out – Ziggler, Punk, Bryan, etc – with no hope of getting their shot at this year’s Mania.

You know who else I’m sad for? Me. In my two years as an official WWE Ambassador, I never once had to lie about my enthusiasm for the company or the product. Now, although I am no longer officially an Ambassador for WWE (believe it or not, my only official role in WWE is as GM for Saturday Morning Slam, a contract that ends in one month) I was till looking forward to being part of the biggest event of the year. I’ll probably end up going anyway. But I’m about 1/6th as excited about it as I was just a few hours ago. I wanted so badly to hear 75,000 WWE fans chanting “YES” – and seeing fans walk away absolutely ecstatic about the outcome of a PPV for the first time in a while…a long while. But when given the chance to make it happen (unless they’ve got something MAJOR up their sleeve) WWE’s answer tonight was a resounding “NO, NO, NO”

    WWE Royal Rumble Kickoff Show

The Royal Rumble Kickoff Show opens with a live shot of the arena, as Josh Mathews introduces us to the official pay-per-view pre-show. From thee, we get our first glimpse of the expert panel, which features former Royal Rumble winners Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels and “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan. Duggan does his “Hoooooooo!” HBK talks about looking forward to tonight. Ric Flair does his “Woooooooo!”

After the introductions, Mathews briefly explains the rules of the Royal Rumble match. HBK talks about the strategy behind winning a Royal Rumble match. Flair talks about how the Rumble can be a career defining moment. Duggan says he’s not a big strategy guy.

Following the Rumble match talk, the expert panel breaks down some of the matches scheduled for tonight. HBK says he’s pulling for the New Age Outlaws in the pre-show match. Flair says he’s going for the Rhodes boys. Hacksaw says second generation wrestlers like the Rhodes brothers have a better feel for things.

Mathews introduces us to Renee Young, who is in the social media lounge. Young informs us to use the hashtag “#RoyalRumble”. She introduces a poll on who fans think will win the Rumble match and then reads some tweets from the WWE Universe about tonight’s big event. Young kicks it back to the expert panel.

Mathews mentions John Cena won the Rumble last year and then introduces some preview footage of the Cena vs. Randy Orton rivalry, which culminates tonight in a rematch between the two for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Some video packages air highlighting the recent history between Cena and Orton. As the expert panel continues to hype the Cena-Orton match, JBL’s theme music can be heard in the background. Lilian Garcia introduces JBL as the expert panel tries to talk over it. Jerry Lawler comes out next and the panel continues to talk over it.

We shoot backstage and several of the WWE Superstars are shown, along with Vickie Guerrero and Brad Maddox. Vickie says it’s time for the guys to draw their entry numbers for tonight’s Rumble. Alberto Del Rio gets his number, doesn’t say it, but says he’s taking everyone out, so he seems happy. Kofi Kingston gets his number and doesn’t really react too much. R-Truth gets his number and seems upset. Antonio Cesaro and Jack Swagger argue over who gets to pick a number next. Cesaro gets one and seems happy. Swagger gets his and then tries to get Cesaro to trade with him. Cesaro won’t. Great Khali gets his number and Damien Sandow sees it, laughs and tells him “maybe next year.” Then Sandow gets his and Khali laughs at whatever number he just got.

Josh Mathews introduces the Royal Rumble commentary team. Jerry Lawler, Michael Cole and JBL briefly talk about the WWE Tag-Team Championship match. Lilian Garcia does the introductions and here we go.

WWE Tag-Team Titles: New Age Outlaws vs. Goldust & Cody Rhodes (c)

“Oh you didn’t know?” and we’re off. Road Dogg comes down to the ring talking like he always does. Road Dogg does his usual schtick as he and Billy Gunn enter the ring. Road Dogg finishes his usual stuff and then Billy Gunn does his part. They really came off as babyfaces here, for whatever that’s worth. After Gunn encourages everyone to say “suck it!” Goldust and Cody Rhodes come out and it’s time for some WWE Tag-Team Championship action. Everyone settle in, because here we go!

The bell sounds and it will be Road Dogg and Cody Rhodes starting the match off for their respective teams. We have 15 minutes until the pay-per-view begins. Road Dogg is in control of Rhodes early on. Road Dogg tags Gunn but Rhodes clotheslines Road Dogg, and then Gunn, both over the top rope and out to the floor. Goldust splashes onto one of the Outlaws from the apron and then Rhodes dives over the top to do the same. On that note, we head to a mid-match commercial.

When we return from commercial, Gunn and Goldust are in the ring with Goldust laid out on the mat. Gunn tags in Road Dogg. The announcers keep giving statistical facts on what records would be broken if the New Age Outlaws were to win the titles tonight. Road Dogg slaps a rear chin lock on Goldust as the crowd tries to get behind the Golden One to get him back into the match. Road Dogg drops some elbows on Goldust and tries a pin. Lots of “two” chants from the crowd on the near falls tonight.

Goldust manages to blast Road Dogg and both guys are down now. Road Dogg makes the tag to Gunn. Gunn goes to work on Goldust in the corner as JBL puts over what great shape Gunn still is in these days. Gunn tries to pin Goldust, but Goldust kicks out at two. “Two!!!” echo’s the fans in Pittsburgh loudly. Gunn runs at Goldust but Goldust catches him and quickly turns him over for a powerslam. The crowd is cheering on Goldust to make the tag now. Goldust and Gunn both make the tag.

Rhodes takes the hot tag and is immediately all over Road Dogg. Rhodes kicks Gunn, who tried to interfere, and then yells “Suck it!” to mock them. Rhodes hits a missile dropkick on both guys off the ropes. Rhodes hits the Cross-Rhodes on Road Dogg out of nowhere but Gunn breaks up the pin attempt just in time. Out on the floor, Gunn spears Goldust into the barricade. Gunn makes the blind tag to Road Dogg. Gunn hits the Fameasser on Rhodes. 1-2-3. New tag-team champions.

Winners and NEW WWE Tag-Team Champions: The New Age Outlaws

We shoot back up to the expert panel and the guys talk about the title change a bit before previewing some more matches at the Royal Rumble tonight. We get some replays from the past few weeks showing some of the moments in the Brock Lesnar vs. Big Show feud. We have five minutes until the pay-per-view begins as Mathews introduces a video package highlighting some stats related to the Royal Rumble match.

After the Rumble stats video package concludes, Josh Mathews talks about what’s at stake in the Rumble, as the winner receives a title shot. Hacksaw Jim Duggan gives his prediction for the Rumble. He picks Dolph Ziggler. Shawn Michaels says he was gonna go with CM Punk, but now he’s going to predict The Shield. He says this way he has three chances to be right. Ric Flair predicts his former Evolution running buddy Batista.

We see Daniel Bryan walking backstage to the ring. Josh Mathews informs us that the Royal Rumble pay-per-view will begin with Bryan vs. Bray Wyatt as the first match on the show.

  • Press Release With Additional Details On Kurt Angle’s TNA Hall Of Fame Induction

    4

TNA issued the following press release regarding Kurt Angle’s Hall Of Fame induction:

LONDON (January 26, 2014) – Kurt Angle is to be inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame during the company’s trip to the UK and Ireland for its MAXIMUM IMPACT VI Tour.

Olympic Gold Medalist and IMPACT WRESTLING Superstar Kurt announced the news earlier today during an appearance on the popular Sunday Brunch TV show, shown on Channel 4. Hosted by Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer, it is watched by more than one million people.

Angle will be inducted to the prestigious TNA Hall of Fame this Saturday, February 1, during the London leg of the Tour at Wembley Arena. A limited number of seats remain available for what will be a historic event. Tickets can be purchased from www.ticketmaster.co.uk, www.gigsandtours.com/tour/tna-wrestling or direct from the Wembley Arena box office.

Angle said: “There are some things I wanted to accomplish before accepting induction into the TNA Hall of Fame, and now I’m ready. I’m thankful I have been able to do this in my own time. The phenomenal wrestling fans in London will be part of this memorable and emotional night this Saturday.”

The star recently listed London as one of the top 10 wrestling cities in the world and added: “Wembley is such a storied venue, and with thousands of fans it will be a perfect setting for the induction ceremony. A majority of my life has been dedicated to achieving success as a wrestler. Being inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame is an accomplishment and an honor I will forever cherish.”

Angle becomes the second inductee into the TNA Hall of Fame, following the inaugural induction in 2012 of “The Icon” Sting.

Angle, who was a collegiate champion and won a Gold Medal in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, seamlessly transitioned from his domination as an amateur wrestler to being a professional wrestling phenomenon.

The only Olympic Gold Medalist in the history of professional wrestling, Angle created incredible buzz when in 2006 he joined TNA. Kurt is one of the most decorated champions in TNA history having won every major championship including the TNA World Heavyweight Championship five times.

Known as the “Cyborg”, Angle is venerated for his physicality, revered for his tenacity and esteemed for his leadership inside and outside of the ring. Among Angle’s numerous awards and accolades, perhaps most profound is the recognition he often receives among his colleagues as the best professional wrestler of all time; a man of solid character and great leadership who dedicates himself to the sport and its fans.

“I am privileged to be a witness to the Kurt Angle story. His influence on wrestling is unrivaled in this sport, or any other,” said TNA Executive Vice President John Gaburick. “TNA is grateful for Kurt’s continued devotion and contributions to our organisation, this business and to the fans.”

In addition to witnessing Angle’s induction into the TNA Hall of Fame, fans attending the Wembley Arena event will be part of a live taping of the weekly IMPACT WRESTLING broadcast, viewed by millions in more than 120 countries around the world.

  • Jim Ross Blog: WWE Royal Rumble Thoughts And Predictions

    5

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog at JRsBarBQ.com with his thoughts & predictions for tonight’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view:

Daniel Bryan vs. Bray Wyatt: “I’ve got Daniel Bryan beating Bray Wyatt but if it goes the other way I won’t be shocked. I can see an argument made for each participant to win in this match. As a matter of fact, the more I think about it, the more I see Wyatt grinding out a physical victory. It’s official…Bray Wyatt will be the winner vs. Daniel Bryan.”

Lesnar vs. Big Show: “Part time superstar and full time badass Brock Lesnar has to get on a roll to monetize his obvious upside so I’ve got Lesnar beating Big Show. Brock using a fan favorite finisher, the ‘F5,’ on the near 500 pounder would be impressive. Something tells me that if Lesnar wasn’t aligned with the masterful Paul Heyman that the former Golden Gopher would be a MAJOR fan favorite in WWE. What is there to detest? Exactly….Heyman! (That’s a compliment by the way.)”

Randy Orton vs. John Cena: “Randy Orton will retain his WWE World Title with a victory or a non finish decision over John Cena. I’d be very surprised if Orton leaves Pittsburgh without the championship. One thing about this matchup is that these two have had multiple opportunities to develop chemistry. This match should be very good.”

CM Punk Entering at #1: “It would be a great story for #1 entrant CM Punk to go door to door and win the Rumble match but wait, doesn’t that also apply to the #2 entrant? Punk’s issues are seemingly with the authority figures within WWE which usually end up biting a fan favorite like Punk in the backside. Just remember back to many of the predicaments that Stone Cold Steve Austin found himself in back in the day with ‘authority figures.'”

The Rumble Match & His Prediction For The Winner: “Throughout the Rumble match, talents will be provided specific opportunities to make themselves stand out and become more marketable thus making them more valuable to their employer. At no time of the PPV year does ‘maximize one’s minutes’ ever hold more true. If, for example, Roman Reigns eliminates a dozen men, which would be one more than Kane’s record of 11, then Reigns can notch his gun even if he doesn’t win the Royal Rumble. Big E Langston is another young talent to keep an eye on tonight.”

“Like many others, I’ve got Batista winning the Rumble match especially if he enters at #20 or above.”

  • Matt Hardy Speaks On Enjoying His Wrestling Career Without Rough Travel Schedule

    3

Former WWE Superstar Matt Hardy recently spoke to The Swerve Magazine about enjoying his wrestling career now that he doesn’t have to deal with the rough travel schedule. Hardy said:

“I make my own schedule; if I want to take off, I can take off; if I want to work more, I can work more. I choose when I work, where I work, I choose who I wrestle. I pretty much get to choose everything. When you work for WWE they tell you where to go, they tell you when you work, they tell you when you’re not going to work, they tell you what to do. There is a huge part of your personal life that you leave once you sign your contract because you become their property in many ways. It is great because they put you in front of great big crowds at the shows and the television saturation is incredible, it’s global. But there is something to be said for having complete freedom, and with me just getting married and talking about having kids, I need that freedom. It helps give me a very good balance in life as far as doing things that fulfill my passion by working about places like Ring of Honor or Extreme Rising, and keeping my name out there circulating among mainstream fans and casual fans, and then also going on vacations, take family trips, doing things with my father.”

  • Mick Foley To ‘Throw A Brick Through His TV’ If Daniel Bryan Doesn’t Win The Royal Rumble

    24

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley has posted a new blog on Facebook and gave his thoughts on tonight’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Foley says he’s hoping for a surprise appearance from Jake Roberts and purchased a ‘nice, new, red brick’ that he plans to throw at his television if Daniel Bryan doesn’t win the Rumble. Here’s what he wrote:

    WHO’S READY TO RUMBLE?

With the exception of Mania, this is the most wonderful day of the year for this wrestling fan. The Rumble match ALWAYS delivers – with plenty of drama, some humorous moments, and a couple of crowd-pleasing surprises each year. Like many of you, I’m hoping for an entry from Jake the Snake this year.

This year’s Rumble takes on an added dimension however. This year’s winner doesn’t get to choose his opponent, and become a participant in ONE of the main event matches at Wrestlemania; he becomes a participant in THE main event at Wrestlemania.

There is another added dimension to this year’s Rumble as well. In no other year that I can remember has there been such a groundswell of good-will towards one particular participant. I still have that brick – that nice, new, red brick – I purchased just for the Rumble (it’s right here beside me) and if DANIEL BRYAN doesn’t win this Rumble, I’m going to take that nice, new, red brick…and throw it through my television set.

I don’t expect you guys to take out your frustration on an innocent television set, but I do think there will be an AWFUL lot of AWFULLY disappointed WWE fans leaving the building tonight in Pittsburgh, and turning off their televisions around the world.

I like my TV. Here’s hoping that the nice, new, red brick I bought will never need to serve its purpose.

Maybe they were normal jeans, but they look skinny on him…[Batista] looks like he’s shrink wrapped. I mean he’s so thin. The guy is in crazy shape… He’s like a genetic freak. He really is. You could work out as much as you want and never look like him. I mean, I don’t [look like him] and I work out a lot.”

On a memory he has about John Cena: “One time, and this is a true story, we were in South Africa and [Cena] started battle rapping. He started rapping with someone and it was awesome. He went five minutes just talking about things around the room. And we were like, ‘Oh my gosh. Where did that come from?’ Tommy Dreamer heard it and Tommy took it to Shane McMahon and Shane McMahon heard it and took it to Vince McMahon and next thing you know he’s a rapper on TV…and he had already been with us six months or so. Slowly but surely he just became John Cena the superstar.”

On Eddie Guerrero: “[Eddie] was told he was a great performer, was always really really good. But he was told, ‘You’re a cruiserweight. You’ll always be a cruiserweight.’ And then when he left and got clean and sober and then came back, the fans just related with him so much and it was undeniable. They had to use him. They had to push him and he became who he was…When he passed, I would be walking in the airport and people would stop and look at me and hug me. They would give me a hug. I remember a TSA agent one time looked at my ID, looked up and looked at me. He didn’t say anything he just grabbed me and hugged me.”

On Eddie’s daughter, Raquel Diaz in NXT: “It’s really cool to see her follow the footsteps of the family…I have given advice and I’m always here for her. I don’t want to coddle her because she needs to do it. But she could call me any day and time and place and I’d be there for her. I just want to see her succeed. She’s got that Guerrero blood in her and people tell me that she’s really, really good.”
