Dean Ambrose Talks About The Shield & His Promo Style

10

WWE United States champion Dean Ambrose recently spoke to the Poughkeepsie Journal. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

The Shield & Why They’re Different From Other WWE Superstars:

“I can tell you it’s been an ever-evolving process. I don’t think we knew where we wanted to go. Every week, it’s been a new idea. An on-the-fly idea. Coming out of the crowd was not a pre-planned, premeditated idea that someone came up with in a meeting room. Everything has kind of organically evolved. Instead of coming through the entrance way, we wanted to make a statement to people that what you see is not like every other WWE superstar, every other normal wrestler. It was done to separate ourselves. We’re not like everyone in the back. We’re completely different and more dangerous and something you’ve got to keep your eyes on. “Everything from the moves we do to the things we wear to the things we say, all of them have been on the fly. We’re making it up as we go along. If something feels natural, we do it. If somebody says a good line, it’s like, hey I like that line, let’s go with it. Or someone does a good move, hey I like that move, let’s do that again. It’s been an on-the job process. You’re watching it unfold with your eyes as much as we are and I think that’s one of the exciting things for the fans.”

His Promo Style:

“Cutting a promo has always come very naturally and it’s nothing I ever had to work on. I don’t know how to explain it. I don’t have a particular process. You have to not be afraid to be yourself and let go and tap into how you really feel. You need to let loose. If you can do that, you can show people a different side of your personality. Get in front of the camera and be free. I enjoy being in front of the camera and I use it as an outlet. In real life, I’m a pretty private person. I’m not a flashy, attention-seeking, kind of guy. When the red light goes on, you have an opportunity to be whatever you want and let loose and use it as an outlet. I’m able to take a lot of aggression off my choice. I guess my best advice would be to just cut loose and not be afraid to just let your real self come out from inside. If you get intimidated by the camera, that shows through. Just enjoy cutting it loose.”

“Guys today, a lot of them only learned one way to do it. They came up in developmental or whatever and are told what to say and that’s the only way they know how to do it. I didn’t come up that way, fortunately. I don’t want anybody to tell me what to say. When you put words in my mouth, I don’t like that. With a promo, you have an opportunity to sell tickets and sell pay-per-views and create interest. Every single time, the camera’s on you, you have a chance to expand your bank account and puts (butts) in the seats and help your performance. It’s all a big part of a masterpiece of an angle or a story that climaxes in a match. It all ties together.”

Bully Ray Wants To Fight Hogan At Bound For Glory & Talks About Who He Wants In Aces & Eights

4

During a TNA Slammiversary Q&A session that took place over the weekend, TNA World Champion Bully Ray commented on the possibility of Hulk Hogan wrestling at Bound For Glory:

“At the end of the day, everyone wants to see Hulk Hogan drop that big leg one more town … I would love to fight Hulk Hogan – in his last match.”

As for which TNA star he thinks would be a good addition to Aces & Eights, he said:

“There is a badass out there that hasn’t been around for awhile. He’s a bad dude that has a mean streak, and it’s Crimson.”

Finally, Bully was asked which company (ECW, WWE, TNA) was the best to work for:

“Every single one of those companies have so many good qualities, and so many bad. The great part of ECW was you got to do whatever you wanted to do, and be whoever you wanted to be. Paul [Heyman] encouraged you to speak up and … become a better performer. When you get to WWE, that doesn’t go over so well.”

Raw Viewership Drops Below Four Million, WWE’s Greatest Diva Photos Ever

29

– Monday’s Memorial Day edition of Raw took a hit as the program averaged 3.945 million viewers, a 7% decrease from 4.226 the week before (which drew a 2.96 cable rating).

Viewership continuously decreased throughout Raw as the show averaged 3.993 million viewers in the first hour, 3.95 in the second and 3.891 in the third and final hour.

The decrease in viewership could be attributed in part to the NBA Playoffs on TNT as the San Antonio Spurs’ Finals-advancing victory over the Memphis Grizzlies averaged 5.2 million viewers to top cable television for the night.

WWE Teaming With The Flintstones For New Animated Movie

39

WWE issued the following today, announcing a new WWE-themed Flintstones animated movie, featuring voice work from “John Cenastone”, “Vince McMagma” and  “CM Punkrock” –

WWE and Warner Bros. Head to Bedrock

STAMFORD, Conn. May 29, 2013 – Warner Bros. and WWE Studios (NYSE:WWE) today announced they are once again teaming up; this time to co-produce a Flintstones animated movie to be released in early 2015.

Fred, Barney and the whole Bedrock gang join up with Vince McMagma (Vince McMahon), and WWE Superstars and Divas including John Cenastone (John Cena®) and CM Punkrock (CM Punk®) as part of the very first WWE main event.

“WWE is family-friendly entertainment, so partnering with Warner Bros. on a Flintstones/WWE project was a natural extension of our Scooby Doo deal,” said Michael Luisi, President, WWE Studios. “This new, animated feature allows us to showcase our brand with young fans and loyal Flintstones enthusiasts alike.”

“Warner Bros. is thrilled to continue our partnership with WWE Studios as we begin production of the latest Flintstones animated feature,” said Jeff Brown. “Our recent production collaborations have proven successful and we have the utmost confidence that the latest tag team between the WWE Superstars and The Flintstones will deliver the same results.”

WWE CFO Gives New Details On The WWE Network

3

Earlier today, WWE’s CFO George Barrios gave a presentation at the Citi Global Consumer Conference in New York City. Here’s what he said about the WWE Network:

“The program grid for the network will center around our monthly Pay-Per-Views [except WrestleMania], so those will become the culminating events of storylines and so on. We are also going to create retrospective content from our library. So that’s not just running library footage. That’s creating kind of compelling stories around past areas of WWE.

So for example one of the series that we’ve created is called the Monday Night War, so it’s takes a look back at both what’s happened inside the ring and outside the ring when Vince McMahon and Ted Turner were battling in the late 90s, so that will be a 15 episode series thereabouts and it’s tested really well. So that’s an example of content of mining our library.

What we are also going to do in the original content, I mean for example we announced a reality series with E! recently called Total Divas, it’s a reality series anchored around our Diva superstars, so we know we can create reality series. I think you would see things like that on the network.

So it will be a different flavour than RAW and SmackDown, which will be our anchored program and broadcast lively. The network will be for those hard core casual may be some less fans to get that little bit extra at a price front that we think is just a lot more interesting than that $45 or $55 monthly [PPV price], which we think is just tougher for big player to consume.”

TNA star Kurt Angle was interviewed by Alfonso Castillo of Newsday.com and spoke about returning to TNA’s main event picture soon:

“This is a nice little break, but I’m getting ready to step and get back in the front seat. By no means am I ready to retire. I’m doing this to help the company. But pretty soon, I’ll be back in the main event mix.”

Angle also spoke about the possibility of returning to WWE before he reties, saying that anything’s possible:

“Since these guys wrestle part-time, obviously it’s appealing. But that’s what I do in Impact Wrestling now,” Angle said. “My loyalty is with Impact Wrestling right now. Mick Foley Interview: Curtis Axel’s Debut, Dean Ambrose, Ziggler’s Title Win, TNA & More

6

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley joined Busted Open with Dave Lagreca and Doug Mortman and discussed Curtis Axel, his Hall of Fame speech, Dolph Ziggler cashing in, his nixed angle with Dean Ambrose (which you can watch in the video above) and much more. You can hear Busted Open on Sirius 92, XM 208 and on the app on Sports Zone. Here are some highlights:

On if Triple H squashed Curti Axel’s debut: “This is not a knock on Triple H, but Triple H talked about retiring me after I already came back three times. At that point it was a big deal in 2000 for Triple H to talk about retiring me. If Triple H has had his last match, which is a good possibility, then I see Paul Heyman bragging for the next three years that Curtis Axel retired Triple H. Which is much bigger than beating him and much more meaningful or whether or not he was slapped or made to look weak momentarily.  For people who ask me if I think this guy has a chance. Not only is he talented and waited his turn and lived through the Michael McGillicutty indignity. I asked him about that and obviously he didn’t want to say anything bad about the company, but he said ,’It hurt a little, it stung when you get your name and it’s Michael McGillicutty. Short term you can say, ‘well why didn’t he beat Triple H?’ But like I said, me being on the outside looking in, depending how this thing plays out, never underestimate the verbal skills of Paul Heyman or the skills of Michael McGillicutty. As a fan it has me hooked. Even if you’re not saying Curtis Axel right now, I believe that Paul is the master. I call him the master gardener. He knows how much water and sunshine to give his project and then they have to grow on their own.”

On his Hall of Fame speech: “I think they intentionally had a smaller class this year and the only guideline Vince McMahon gave us was to have fun and enjoy it. That was the only critique of me when I came back to the WWE because I had left with the words ‘You’ll never speak to me this way again.’ Then I came back with the words ‘can I come back now?’ So I was a little tentative. Vince even said to me, ‘Mick, you look like you’re not enjoying yourself’ and I wasn’t.  I did throw a minor little fit over the rumor that Donald Trump’s speech was going to air and not mine on television. I specifically remembered that I had told Stephanie McMahon a week or two earlier. I said, ‘Stephanie, the moment you guys mentioned my book on the air Countdown to Lockdown, I said at that moment I promised myself that if I was ever asked to be in the Hall of Fame that I would say yes unconditionally. I wouldn’t ask to be on at a certain point, it would be unconditionally. Then all of a sudden I hear about Donald Trump and I’m placing conditions on it. I said that’s not the way I feel. This is going to be a great night. I really apologized in front of the entire McMahon family. Because I did feel it wasn’t my place to say that and most importantly, now I was lying to what I had said to Stephanie. This came from the heart. It was supposed to be unconditional. Now I’m actually thinking about going out there and throwing my ring in the audience. These were the thoughts going through my head. By the time I got to the Garden, I’m just going to enjoy this. I went out on stage and realized I would probably never have the opportunity to address 17,000 people in THAT arena. The most important one in the country to me. I consider it maybe the best highlight of my career because I was able to recognize it.”

How he felt he did with his speech: “I dissect my speech like this. I knew it as I was giving the speech, the moment I dropped that elbow on Jericho, and I heard that pop, I should have said time to go home, because this as high as it was going to get. But I had a couple of things I wanted to say. I wish I had written out a conclusion and talk about how I wanted to be remembered, and as a guy who gave back. I was going to use Randy Orton as an example. I was the right guy at the right time and hope that other superstars could be that guy in that place for someone else down the line. I rambled on for ten minutes too long.”

On TNA: “I really enjoyed the people there. But once you had five non-wrestling talkers in the company…my role now is what it should be. The guy who occasionally comes back. I love doing the Saturday Morning Slam. If a different GM opportunity comes up, I would appreciate being considered. But I don’t need to be a big part of any show ever again. I probably outstayed my welcome by a little while.  One nice little story about Dixie Carter. I never should have said that tweet about the empty arena match with the Rock, a.k.a. a TNA house show. That was the one that rubbed people the wrong way, because it was a slap in the face to everyone who works there, even though it was kind of funny. I was doing a show in Nashville, so I reached out to Dixie. I texted her, ‘hey I’ve got this show in Nashville, it would be really nice to see you and Serge and maybe you could come along.’ I get back in my car about an hour later and I see a text from Dixie and it says, ‘that’s ok.’ I thought to myself, ‘well, that bridge has burned. That relationship is unsolvable.’ It wasn’t until an hour after, that I saw the ‘that’s ok’ was just on the tail end of a much longer message that said, ‘ I really appreciate you thinking of us. We would love to go, but I may have to be somewhere. Can I get back to you if,’ and then the last line, ‘that’s ok.’ She did come to the show and honestly she was the first person to message me after they put me in the Hall of Fame. I wish I could have done more for them. I really do.”

Did he know Dean Ambrose would be a major star: “I knew they were really high on him. Dean was probably happier with the break with the Shield and I was the second happiest to see him get that break. I cannot physically wrestle anymore. That break that I thought I was going to be a part of, was just not going to happen. Dean would be at every TV taping, so I would see him and say, ‘hey how are things going? Anything on the horizon?’ and he would be like, ‘no man, not yet.  I felt personally responsible. So when he said ‘yeah they had something’, I asked, ‘is it pretty good?’ He said, ‘Yeah it’s pretty good’. Ironically his career would have really suffered had he done the run with me. It would have been a nice boost, but then he would have been on his own from that point. Getting over long term is really, really difficult. These guys not only did they come up slowly, by the time they had their first match at TLC they blew everybody away at the Barclay’s Center. All three guys have the potential to be major stars. I couldn’t be happier for Ambrose. He is kind of a weird dude, but it works to his advantage. I’ve described his style as disturbingly poetic. The way that he moves, he is so fluid. William Regal was the guy that was so high on him. He said ‘he is everyone’s perfect opponent for the next ten years.'”

On being there the night Dolph Ziggler cashed his Money in the Bank briefcase: “When I heard the audience eruption, I asked, ‘what just happened?’ They said, ‘Ziggler is cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase.’ I ran because I really wanted to be a part of that experience in the arena. We all know it’s a pretty good percentage rate when it comes to cashing in.  I’m not saying this to put myself over, but I had a talk with Dolph earlier and I said, ‘man I got to be honest Dolph I thought I was going to see you cash in last night.’ Dolph then said to me, ‘yeah you and me both brother.’ I said, ‘take it from someone who knows, when you get that chance and you will, and when you become world champion, and you will, don’t let the place or the time or the circumstances dictate to you how special that moment is going to feel. Take it from a guy who won his first WWE title on a taped show in Worcester, Massachusetts. It’s going to be every bit as special as it would have been at Mania.’  So when I heard he was cashing in, I ran to be part of the arena. I could see my arms pumping, and then I looked down at my legs and they weren’t running. I wandered out into the crowd and saw Ziggler win the world title. When he came back he said, ‘that was my Wrestlemania moment.’ It was really cool to be there. Clearly this guy is going to be the cornerstone of the company. I feel really good about the direction this company is headed.”

Live Report Of The Fight That Broke Out During RAW Main Event

34

As noted earlier, a fight broke out during the main event of Monday’s WWE RAW between John Cena and Curtis Axel. Reader Steven sent in the following live report to WrestlingINC.com regarding what happened:

“I was at the RAW show last night, on the edge of the upper bowl directly overtop of the incident during the Cena – Axel match. It pretty much came out of no where in the back of the floor level seating when a fan (not sure if he was drunk, but he appeared so afterwards) threw a punch, and very quickly a larger tussle broke out that appeared to be quite violent. The entire crowd’s attention turned to it and people started a ‘Fight! Fight! Fight!’ chant. Security rushed over very quickly, and one of the event staff actually knocked down one of the guys throwing punches pretty hard. A couple of the guys and the girl involved were so worked up and crazy that it took 4+ men to hold them back, and even then barely could do so.”

“At this point nobody was watching the match in the ring anymore and the whole crowd was buzzing and standing to see what was going on. Police rushed over to cuff those involved, and in the end 3 guys and one large woman were cuffed and escorted out by security, with the crowd cheering and yelling loudly at them. There were some people on the edge of the aisles that guided them out with DX glowsticks, like a plane.”

Jim Ross Blog: NXT Stars Taking Over WWE, Bray Wyatt & Family, The Shield, Daniel Bryan

6

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

Former NXT Stars Stepping Up In WWE: “NXT is doing its work as many new faces from developmental are beginning to to occupy key, roster spots on RAW and Smackdown.  Some incumbent talents on the main roster who are ‘peculating’ might want to glance over their shoulder. More, outstanding NXT prospects are pushing to be “next” on the call up list. Competition is on going and good for all.  It will take time for all the ‘new’ to be facilitated which means that it will take patience of which many fans and some talents don’t have in an abundance. I see much of 1013 being a ‘transition year,’ of sort, which  means fresh, new, and exciting times on WWE TV programming.”

Bray Wyatt & Family: “The Bray Wyatt Family vignette was spot on and after seeing them perform as much as I have in NXT I can attest that they will, without question, contribute positively to WWE once they arrive on RAW and/or Smackdown. Wyatt has success and athleticism in his blood and has that rare, second gear that most big men do not possess. I can’t stress how important that is. Luke Harper and Erick Rowan are big, rugged dudes who, at times, remind me of a young Mick Foley or Bruiser Brody inasmuch as they are ‘brawlers’ who move well for being such big men.”

The Shield’s Recent Work: “The Shield continues to evolve and their unit is becoming one of the hottest entities within WWE in years. If they can stay healthy, which there are no guarantees, and continue to evolve and master their craft these three can be big time players in WWE for years to come. Hopefully, they will continue down their current path as I would like to see where that would take the trio at WM30 in New Orleans.”

Daniel Bryan: “For my money, no one on any WWE broadcast over shadows Daniel Bryan who is arguably the best technical wrestler in the business and his consistent performances week after week often times goes unmentioned. Bryan has the same skill set that Bret Hart had back in the day and that is making everyone that he’s in the ring with better. That is a true artform and is one that is battling to make a comeback in today’s world of sports entertainment.”

WWE Releasing More Talent Very Soon & Backstage News On Recent Releases

24

fter releasing 7 people from NXT last week, word out of WWE is that the company will be letting go more talent soon.

With the company’s new Performance Center opening on July 1st and WWE actively recruiting new talent, there are plans to let go a lot of people who have been floundering in developmental without showing steady improvement.

Derek Bateman’s release last week is an example of this policy – having been in developmental for years and not showing that he was ready for the main roster.

Out of the releases from last week, Briley Pierce and Audrey Marie’s caught a lot of people off guard.
