  • Vince McMahon Claims He Rejected Cable/Satellite Offer For WWE Network

    7

WWE CEO Vince McMahon stated in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times that he turned down an offer for a commercial cable network and a pay channel model, similar to HBO.

WWE apparently had a deal on the table with major distributors that would have generated a reported 20 cents per month, per subscriber, had they gone that route. “I said, much to the chagrin of my staff, I’m not going to sign it,” said McMahon in the L.A. Times interview.

McMahon added that the terms pay-television distributors wanted were “too restrictive.”

  • Dixie Carter Holds Company Meeting Addressing The Future Of Impact, Jarrett’s Departure

    19

TNA President Dixie Carter held a company meeting this week at company headquarters in Nashville to address a wide variety of topics, including Jeff Jarrett’s departure, how future Impact Wrestling TV tapings will be handled and more.

As we reported earlier this month, Impact Wrestling is without a home base once again due to all of the sound stages at Universal Studios in Orlando being booked up for the remainder of 2014. During the meeting, Dixie Carter acknowledged that TNA still does not know where they’ll be holding Impact tapings after March. While they are still in talks with Universal Orlando about working out some sort of deal, the company is looking at other locations for future tapings.

Regarding Jeff Jarrett’s surprise departure from the company, Dixie Carter was very vague and simply called it a “business decision.” It’s believed that when Toby Keith’s negotiations to buy TNA broke down, Jarrett decided it was time to leave.

In related news, TNA is looking to hold the upcoming Lockdown pay-per-view from the Miami, Florida area.

DirecTV Hints That They Might Stop Carrying WWE PPV Events

    25

With the official announcement of the WWE Network and the news that all 12 of WWE’s monthly pay-per-view events will be included in the streaming service, one of the big topics of discussion has been the future of PPV events for fans who do not subscribe.

WWE stated that fans who do not get the WWE Network can still order their pay-per-views through traditional means (cable/satellite providers). However, knowing that the WWE Network might cause some pushback from cable/satellite providers, WWE filed a document with the SEC on Thursday saying that some of the providers might decide to stop carrying their PPV’s.

Now, DirecTV is the first company to publicly acknowledge the situation. In a statement made to the Los Angeles Times, a DirecTV spokesperson said,

“Clearly we need to quickly re-evaluate the economics and viability of their business with us, as it now appears the WWE feels they do not need their PPV distributors.”

They added that sales WWE PPV events “have been steadily declining, and this new low-cost competitive offering will only accelerate this trend.”

Make no mistake about it – cable providers are not happy about the WWE Network, which was, in part, a power play by WWE to cut them out of millions of dollars in PPV revenue. Rightfully so – why use a ‘middle man’ and give them upto 60% of PPV sales when you don’t have to?

During the ‘groundbreaking announcement’ from Las Vegas, Vince McMahon “I think it’d be foolish for them not to want to carry the pay-per-view anymore. It’s found money for them.”

  • Ric Flair Announces He Will Not Attend 49ers vs. Panthers NFL Playoff Game

    6

Ric Flair’s representatives released the following today:

Ric Flair® Will Not Attend Playoff Game in Carolina

CHARLOTTE, NC – (January 9, 2014) He’s always been the “dirtiest player in the game” – and some things never change.

A long time Carolina Panthers fan, Ric Flair created quite the stir when WWE sent him to Green Bay, WI January 5th to give the San Francisco 49ers an unexpected locker room pep talk. WWE is hosting WrestleMania XXXI in SanFrancisco in 2015. Now many are asking: Will Flair attend the January 12th playoff game in Carolina as they host San Francisco? And if so, which team will he support?

“When the 49ers reached out and WWE asked Ric to jet up there, of course he said yes,” says Melinda Morris Zanoni, Flair’s agent at Legacy Talent and Entertainment, “and he’s friends with a bunch of the 49ers just like he is with the Panthers, Packers, and many other NFL players. But no, Ric does not intend on attending the Panthers vs. 49ers game this weekend.” “What can I say? I’ve always been a very good heel!” added Flair.

The 49er pep talk, which instantly went viral, caused many Carolina fans to voice their feelings of anger and betrayal on social media – some even offering death threats to Flair. “We know fans are passionate about their teams, but some of the choice language we have been receiving is scaring off our interns,” says Melinda.

  • Why WWE Is Launching The Network In February, WWE Network Subreddit

    1

    – A new subreddit has been created on Reddit.com for fans to discuss the WWE Network: Reddit.com/r/WWENetwork.

    – WWE announced last night that the WWE Network will be launching on Monday night, February 24, 2014 immediately following the conclusion of WWE RAW. Forbes.com reports that one of the main reasons WWE is launching the Network in February is to gain leverage in their ongoing TV rights fees negotiations. Aside from WWE negotiating with other cable networks, having the WWE Network as a potential home for their programming is valuable leverage.

Of course, launching it before WrestleMania XXX – and the inclusion of WrestleMania as part of the package, is another big selling point.

Monday’s Old School RAW averaged 4.5 million viewers. The Forbes article states that if WWE were able to sign up 4 million people for the Network – it would generate as much revenue as the entire company took in during 2012.
