  • Mick Foley Speaks On People Who Say Wrestling Is Fake, Wrestling vs. Writing

    3

The following are highlights froma recent interview with Mick Foley:

On people who say wrestling is fake: “There is nothing worse than sitting on a plane for six hours next to someone whose first question to you was, ‘Is wrestling fake?’ You know you are not going to have a pleasant experience. I would never think of sitting down next to somebody and insulting what they do for a living. My general answer is, I say, ‘Every bit of it is fake,’ and then they say, ‘Every bit of it?’ Then I get people starting to come on my side and saying they know that some of that was real. That’s something I learned from Owen Hart. Just say ‘yes, every bit of it is fake.’”

On wrestling vs. writing: “Both of them are about commitment. You go back to Mr. Miyagi’s theory on life: If you stand on one side of the road you are fine, and if you stand on the other side of the road you are fine, but if you stand in the middle you get squashed like a grape. With wrestling, writing or performing on stage you either go all out or you don’t go at all. You don’t sit down to kind of write a book. You have to have your heart in it. I think in most everything I do the evidence is there — my heart has been in it when I am doing it.”

Updates On Kurt Angle’s Knee Injury & Prince Devitt Meeting With TNA

    5

    – As previously reported, Irish wrestler Prince Devitt attended a TNA live event from Dublin, Ireland last month. Devitt met with TNA officials about the possibility of joining the company, but he was basically just doing them a courtesy with no real intention of working for TNA. If he was to leave New Japan Pro Wrestling, it would only be for WWE, who he’s been courted by.

The Latest On Prince Devitt’s WWE Negotiations

    – TNA star Kurt Angle has been in bad physical condition lately. Despite his claims that his health is fine (and being able to put on good TV matches), he was barely able to move around behind the scenes. There was even a photo of him sitting in a wheelchair circulating online last week (view here).

It was recently discovered that Angle has no ACL cartilage left in his knee. Chris Jericho worked with a similar condition several years ago and part of his ACL cartilage eventually grew back.

Backstage News On Vince Russo Possibly Working With TNA Again

    3

In recent weeks, there have been some suspicions that Vince Russo is once again involved in TNA’s creative process, possibly working as a consultant. Russo was CC’d on some creative e-mails, but several people in TNA denied he was working for the company.

People close to Russo are saying that he’s been following the product again.

TNA is working with Japan’s Wrestle-1 promotion, but Wrestle-1 was adamant that they would not do business with TNA if Russo was involved in any capacity. When they asked TNA about the situation, they reportedly did not get a direct answer.

TNA wrestlers have been talking about the rumors of Russo working for TNA again. Bully Ray and Abyss, who have a lot of seniority in the company and frequently deal witih company management, have told the wrestlers that they know nothing about Russo working for TNA.

Jim Ross Speaks On CM Punk Situation, MVP/TNA, Fans Hijacking Shows & More

    4

The following are highlights of a new Busted Open Radio interview with Jim Ross:

On MVP in TNA and if he’ll have an impact on the company: “You know, well I’d like to think so. I like the guy. I think he’s has around a million with life experiences cause his path to get into the business is certainly…unique. To say the least. I always thought he was a real sharp guy. He had a great head for the business. So if he’s given the opportunity to take over a leadership role or if he has the mindset to become a leader in that locker room; then he should be able to help him. He’s a good man. I’m glad that he’s back in the loop and I think that he has a lot to offer. He’s just a really cool guy. And I’m happy for him.”

On backstage politics in wrestling bleeding into storylines: “Well it’s a unique phase without question. I’m not–I don’t know if I like it or I don’t like it. I like it if it leads to outstanding in-ring content. Just the face to face–or talk or whatever; I’m not so sure how much I like it. And not speaking of anything specifically. I’m an old school guy, for better or for worse. I still believe that personal issues that make common sense are very marketable. I still believe that there is and are a good versus evil. I know there’s lines of grey and that line allegedly between good and evil becoming more and more thin; and all that good stuff. But I mean I have people; there’s people in my life that I encounter that I like a whole lot less than others. So they’d be on my heel list. So I still think we are creatures of habit and our human instincts are gonna be what they are. We’re gonna like some people and we’re not going to like some people. But I think that wrestling should have villains and heroes for various reasons. And I’m not a big based guy. I think you gotta be either black or white. I’m not big on earth tones. I think you gotta have a divinity. And a lot of the guys, unfortunately because they just don’t have the experience, nor have they had, they don’t have–some of them don’t have the instincts. A lot of guys actually don’t know how to be a heel or a villain. And hopefully that is something that will continue to be reinforced and taught as time goes on.”

On the CM Punk situation: “Well, I had that happen. Stone Cold did that and went home. And he regrets it to this very day. Because he just–you never get into a situation where–there’s a couple of basics things here. One is that you don’t want to get into a situation where it becomes easy for you as a professional or in private life to start breaking commitments. And a contract is a commitment. I think that the other thing is that you never get–you never save enough money nor can you live a starkness existence. The way you got all the money you’re ever gonna need and you live good money laying behind. I personally don’t believe in that. And I think a lot of the wrestlers over the years would say the same thing. So I’m not a fan of anybody in any walk of life exiting before it’s time. But I also don’t know all the information. This may have been a situation where Punk needed to take his leave and recharge his batteries a long time ago. I don’t know. I haven’t been there. And I have observed his privacy by not reaching out to him in several weeks.”

“We used to text every now and then just to shoot the breeze and see how he’s doing. And mostly just friendly stuff. It wasn’t too deep. So I haven’t talked to him. But I know what it’s like to see burn out and hit the wall. And it’s a tough business. The one night stands, the taxing on your body, the mental strain of–especially when you’re a perfectionist like he is. Where you really analyze creative. And creative has a hard time keeping guys like Punk happy because he’s so demanding and he’s got such a great head for creative in a large sense. Austin did too. Austin could tell you what he didn’t like. He wasn’t great at telling you what the solution is but he had such amazing instincts that he could tell you what was going to work or what wasn’t going to work. But he didn’t know exactly why. It was a feel thing, which is a great gift quite frankly. So I wish the guy had not hit the wall. But I can understand it. I can understand hitting the wall. I just felt like the timing of it was–is there ever a good time for these type of circumstances? Probably not but I’m not a big fan of leaving your post so to speak. Especially when his contract was up–I guess it’s gonna be up in July.”

“So he was coming down the home stretch anyway. So if it were me, being the overt capitalist that I am, I wanna stick around and make the money. Now the other thing that we don’t know and I certainly don’t know; I don’t know about you guys but we don’t know physically how he is. He obviously mentally is burnt out. He’s done. But I don’t know physically how bad he’s hurting. And if he’s hurting badly enough that he’s not safe in the ring or he’s jeopardizing his health; then most definitely he should not be in the ring. But we don’t know all that data so all I know is he’s one of my favorite guys in the business, outside of the ring or inside of the ring. I wish things had worked out differently but look. He spent his whole life to get here and to get in that main event level area and make big money. He did that. He has a lot to be proud of and he’s had a lot of accomplishments. Live the dream. I don’t think the dream is over. I just think that he needs to step away for a while. And I don’t know what a while is. He might not be back for a year. He might not be back for six months. I would give him as long as he needed. Because there’s no sense in coming back when you’re half-ass ready. Come back when you’re ready to roll. But I don’t think we’ve seen the last of him. But we may have seen the last of him this year.”

On fans hijacking shows: Well, I think overall it’s good. I think there’s the defiant, vocal group that likes to express themselves. I have no issue with the fans chanting things that make sense. Indiscriminate or ill-timed chants, just off the wall BS, just to draw attention to yourself; I’m not a big fan of that. But you know you pay your money, you come in–the tickets aren’t exactly cheap. So you come in, you pay your money, you sit down and then you can–it’s like you go to a football game or–hey I’ve had, I’ve been pissed off at Oklahoma football fans for booing the team. At home. I don’t like it. But you know they paid their money and they came so they express themselves.”

“I do think that there are some of these chants that are individually, ego-centrically based. I don’t think it’s a matter of just executing one’s freedom of speech. I think it’s to draw attention to themselves. And then some of these people sitting around and chanting; I don’t think they even know why they’re chanting. It’s kind of just the fun, cool thing to do. So I don’t think that the relationship is horrific or anything but I do the fans in our society are more outspoken. And more defiant. I have season tickets to the OU women’s basketball games with Jack Nicholson type seats. You know front row. I’m near the pep squad and the cheerleaders and all that. And what some of the pep team; the men and women, they’re called rough necks. What they chant to the opposing women’s basketball teams sometimes can be uncomfortable. It’s like you’ve got to be kidding me. They’re girls. I’m a grandfather. I’ve got two granddaughters.”

“So I think it’s partially a societal thing. I don’t think it’s a wrestling deal. But I do think that wrestling fans have a little bit more knowledge. They’re a little braver. They’re a little bit more defiant. But that kind of goes along with society so I don’t look at it as a huge deal. The bottom line is always this: If you give the fans what you perceive that they want; more often than not most of them will be happy. But we live in a society guys where today, you’re never going to make all the fans happy. Back in the day, you didn’t know if you were making them happy or not cause it was all based on ticket sales for live events. Now there’s a million ways to measure it and who’s trending and all this other stuff. It’s just a whole different ball game. So I don’t look at it as a wrestling issue as much as society has a say. And it’s just the way it is. So it’s not an issue to me. I don’t like the hijacking–cool term of, we‘re ‘hijacking’ a show. We’re taking it over. And by god you’re gonna book what we want or you’re gonna hear from us. Really? Well ok. Where does it stop? Where does it go? We could talk about that a lot. It’s interesting.”

  • D’Lo Brown Speaks On TNA, In-Ring Return, Working In Japan & More

    3

The following are highlights of a recent Between The Ropes interview with D’Lo Brown:

On whether or not he was open to getting back in the ring while working with TNA Wrestling after not wrestling for four years: “I was open to doing it. I told them I didn’t mind doing it on short stints which was fine with me. I’m the most comfortable in the ring so there was never a nerve issue (of returning to the ring) at all. I was just more worried about could I still perform at the level that I knew I could, that I used to. That was answered pretty quickly. So, from that point on, I had no problems getting back in the ring and having fun.”

On if he realized he missed being in the ring: “Yes. I think it was that match with Kurt Angle, that night in the hotel I was like ‘you know, there’s something about that’. Wrestling’s a weird thing … once you have it in your blood, it may go to sleep for a little while but it wakes right back up. I missed it a lot.”

On being back in the ring with All Japan Pro Wrestling and not working in the United States: “I’ve always had a love affair for Japan. It was a place that gave me creativity to work the way I wanted to and not be constrained. And besides, I’m not going to hold any punches, I’m a little older so most companies in America aren’t even interested in a little older wrestler but in Japan your age is revered. It was a nice, easy place to go to, nice transition and I’m very comfortable with that style. It was easy to fit right back in.”

WWE Hall of Famer Booker T spoke to Philly.com this week as part of their series celebrating Black History Month and great African American pro wrestlers. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Being Remembered As A Legend: “For me personally, I’m just glad to be a part of the history. That’s something I always say is good to do in life, is to leave our mark in this lifetime. I always wanted to be mentioned in the same breath as all of the great wrestlers. I’ve never really considered myself a wrestler. I always considered myself an entertainer, but I always wanted to be better than the guy next to me. I always wanted to go out and entertain the fans.”

Turning His Life Around As A Troubled Youth: ““I just had to change,” he said. “Either I was going to change or not. It was a crossroad. All the mistakes I made coming up prepared me to be the man I’ve become today. I needed those experiences to mold the person people see before them today.

Not Labeling Himself A ‘Black Wrestler’: “Throughout my whole time in wrestling on the road, going out and being around some of the whitest people in the world I’ve never had any problems with anybody. It was never black or white. Booker T was just a wrestler. I did that by design. When people see me come out of that curtain, it’s never been a black guy. • Jim Cornette Speaks On Working With Cena & Lesnar Early In Their Careers

    5

The following are highlights of a new Wrestling 101 interview with Jim Cornette:

On working with John Cena in OVW: “”In OVW here in Louisville between 1999 – 2005 we were the developmental territory for the WWE. A lot of guys came to OVW who weren’t signed by the WWE but became signed by the WWE, because they came here to train and they got good and they ended up getting offered contracts.”

“John came from California, we got him really early on in his career but you could tell he was a natural, I thought he would actually be this generations version of a Ric Flair. He was a heel then, and he was so cocky, arrogant and good looking – he had the physique and the genetics, he could talk but they decided to go a different direction with him and he got over just as big on the other side.”

On working with Brock Lesnar in OVW: “With Brock I’ll be honest with you, he was getting paid about four or five times more than everyone else in the developmental program because of who he was. You don’t come across an athletic specimen like that who won the NCAA Heavyweight Championship everyday. However he was not a natural wrestling fan, not a natural wrestling student, he was a bit boring in the ring to be honest because he wasn’t used to being a showman. Also for a world class athlete I didn’t think he was trying five times as hard as his salary.”

“I paired him up with Shelton Benjamin who was one of the most natural wrestling school students we ever had, picked up things instantly and was exciting, so I made them a tag team. Shelton would do all the work, he would tag Brock and Brock would make a comeback and throw everyone through the roof. When he hit the WWE he became instantly exciting, remember the shooting star press he did at WrestleMania, he would do that for us and I would tell him he was crazy and to save it for the big show at the Louisville Gardens when the WWE agents are there and not in the high school halls. He did it in front of the WWE agents and they signed him directly because of that, the time he did it at WrestleMania is the only time I’ve seen him miss it.”

    8

The following are highlights of a recent Baltimore Sun interview with Mickie James:

On current status with WWE: “I don’t really know … I mean, I know what sparked that interest in it was, me reaching out and seeing what opportunities were available, or any interest in me at all. And that’s when they talked about if I was interested in going down and working with the girls there, and feeling that whole trainer position out, and seeing if it was something that I was even good at. I’ve never trained anyone in my life. I’ve been fortunate enough to really work with amazing people and have incredible people lead me along the way. Any chance I had to work with Ricky Steamboat or Bobby Eaton, that’s what I did when I was trying to make it, was soak up knowledge from all those people before I went to developmental. I felt like developmental really was that fine-tuning experience with me. I can’t say that I’ve done all this stuff in wrestling, but at the same time, there is a bit of that humbleness that I feel like if I can give someone that knowledge, or pass something on that’s going to help them so perhaps they don’t make the same mistakes that you made, or it’s going to better them as a performer then you always want to give back. Someone told me a long time ago that you always want to leave the business better than you walked into it. This would be an opportunity to do that. Whether I’m in that right position right now, as far as being a trainer, I’m not sure. I have so much stuff going on right now between the music, and still wrestling, and other side projects I’m working on right now. And with that kind of job, I’d have to give up everything else, and I’m not sure if I’m in a place to do that right now. And obviously that could change tomorrow, but, who’s to say.”

On the stars and Divas of NXT: “I thought there were a handful of them with legit, real potential. Obviously, I thought Paige was amazing. I had met Paige before, back in England actually. I really like her. That was the first time I had worked with Emma, and I thought she was really good. Sasha Banks, I really like her a lot. She had a good personality and was really sharp, and had a great look and a great character. Yeah, there are definitely girls with potential there. You never know who’s going to be the next superstar. Some of them are just kind of getting their feet wet, and have a ways to go, but they could be the next superstars.”

“There’s always give and take. The most successful characters and personas are extensions of the person who plays them. It’s pretty much me, for the most part. As a powerlifter, I kind of use those abilities in what I do now. It’s essentially me, but I’m still not sure how we came up with Big E Langston.”

He also commented on his reaction when he was told his ring name at developmental:

“Honestly, it was kind of jarring at first, but now I’ve gotten used to it. ‘Big E.’ is something people have always called me, but the ‘Langston’ part is kind of random,”

This is a must-listen for any wrestling fan! Brother Devon is legit one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.

Topics include the pressure of a big match at WM and his favorite matches with the company … Paul Heyman’s vision for the D-Von character (Mr. T meets Pulp Fiction) … starting riots in ECW … his own singles aspirations and The Dudley Boys’ legacy as a tag team, his pressures as an African American role model … being perceived as the lesser Dudley in the media and competition with his partner … The Dudleys being Vince McMahon’s favorite tag team … what Road Warrior Hawk meant to he and Bubba … and what makes a “great” match. Plus check it out for lots of backstage stories from three major wrestling companies.

You can listen to IN THE ROOM courtesy of the VOC Nation Radio Network on vocnation.com and simulcast on thebradyhicks.com. Thanks, as always, for the support.

Here are some highlights of what he said about:

<b>On First Entering ECW</b>: When I was told I had the chance to be in ECW I was scared to death. That wasn’t normal to get hit with a barbed-wire bat or a chair, going through tables, or dropping the ropes and surrounding it with barbed wire. It wasn’t normal. I thought it was crazy. But I knew in the back of my mind that ECW could be a stepping stone to get to the WWE … What I didn’t visualize happening was falling in love with the company. Falling in love with that style, the same style that I was afraid of. Basically just not wanting to leave. So when the opportunity did come at first for me to go to the WWE … I had cold feet and didn’t want to go because I didn’t want to leave the ECW fans. I didn’t want to leave ECW.

<b>On Being Bubba/Bully’s Close Friend:</b> Can Bubba be a prick? Absolutely. He’ll be the first to tell you himself. He’ll be the first to tell you he’s a jerk. He’ll be the first to tell you that he don’t like people. There are times where we’re traveling together and people will come up to me and talk to me and he will just sit there and he won’t say anything. And they’ll go, “Hey, Bubba. How are you doing?” And he’ll look at me and go, “I just want to know something. Do I have, on my forehead, ‘I’m a nice person’ printed on it? Let me know so I can erase it.” He’ll be the first to tell you he’ll be difficult when he wants to be.

<b>On Devon’s Past and Present Relationship with TNA:</b> I think every company has growing pains. I think TNA is going through that growing pains. [Regarding] my departure from the company, to me it was just time to leave and I have no regrets. I’m very happy with the decision that I have made. I look forward to bigger and better things. [I’m] not saying that TNA wasn’t a good thing, it’s just that everything runs its course … it was time for me to move on. If you’re in a company for too long … ideas and things like that don’t necessarily register. You’re always fighting, trying to get them to understand you and vice versa … In terms of [TNA] being a family, it all depends on who you ask. I experienced good times there. I’ve also experienced bad times … This past August, I did not want to be there. I was ready to move on to the next chapter of my life. I’m not going to say it’s dysfunctional. I just think that it’s growing pains I wish them nothing but the best. I miss them dearly, but not enough to go back.

<b>On Being the Workhorse of The Dudley Boys:</b> I guess a lot of people would say that. You look at all the matches back then and yes and even Bubba would say that. I think that is a fair assessment. Don’t get me wrong, Bubba held his own as well, but when it came to all the other stuff and things of that nature, yeah you could say I was the workhorse of the group. But Bubba had a great mind for the business as well. So I think that’s where we pretty much evened out … I think the reason why we lasted as long as we did is because we knew our jobs, we knew what we had to do, we knew [to] make money, and if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it. That was one of the things that we both realized very, very early.
