Press Release: Unauthorized Nonfiction Book On Billy Kidman Set For Release

    6

The following press release was issued today:

Feb. 5, 2014 – PITTSBURGH – Author L. Anne Carrington dared to be different when she burst on the literary scene in 2010 with The Cruiserweight, her first wrestling-based novel in a four-part series. The Cruiserweight Series’ third book, Klass Act, was named 2013 Sport Book of the Year by Turning the Pages Books.

Ms. Carrington takes her interest in sports entertainment further with Billy Kidman: The Shooting Star,an unauthorized nonfiction account of the former cruiserweight star soon to be released by Florida-based independent publisher Palm Tree Books.

“Palm Tree Books is proud to be part of this upcoming project,” said founding publisher Donovan Rutherford. “We aim to publish books that suit a variety of readers’ interests. The market for sports entertainment topics still remains virtually untapped, and L. Anne Carrington’s new book could be a key factor in filling that void.”

Ms. Carrington elaborated on what inspired her to write Billy Kidman: The Shooting Star. “I’ve read several sites and message boards geared toward past wrestling stars basically asking the same question: ‘Whatever happened to that guy [Kidman]?’ I found an earlier book about him online last summer, but its contents only covered his career up to 2000 or 2001. I did additional research between finishing other projects and uncovered lesser-known information alongside what is already common knowledge.”

Billy Kidman: The Shooting Star covers Kidman’s early days in his native Allentown, PA, respective stints as a cruiserweight wrestler with East Coast independent wrestling federations, the now-defunct World Championship Wrestling (WCW), World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), American and overseas promotions following his WWE career, working as a wrestler and trainer for the former Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), and his status as of early 2014. The book also features bonus pages of titles held, additional reading, and links to related web sites.

Billy Kidman: The Shooting Star will be available for sale March/April 2014 in both paperback and ebook formats.

Earlier this week, Take-Two interactive officially announced that WWE 2K15 is in development. While the initial announcement made no mention of the game being available on next generation consoles, the company has now confirmed WWE 2K15 will in fact be released on Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

During a Wednesday night earnings call with investors,  Take-Two president Karl Slatoff said:

“In addition, during fiscal 2015, consumers can look forward to exciting next generation releases from our NBA 2K and WWE franchises as well as other unannounced titles that promise to raise the bar for excellence. We will have more to share about our titles throughout the next several months as we head into E3.”

Take-Two Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick touted the strong sales performance of WWE 2K14, which exceeded their sales projections:

“Our WWE franchise has quickly proven to be a successful addition to our portfolio Sales of WWE 2K14 have exceeded our expectations and the title is being supported with add-on content including a Season Pass featuring many of fan-favourite WWE superstars and legends. We believe there is a meaningful opportunity to grow this series by further leveraging 2K’s marketing power and development expertise.”

As for whether WWE 2K15 will be available on PS3 and Xbox 360, Zelnick explained:

“We have haven’t said anything about our NBA titles – but for next gen platforms – our sports titles but for next gen platforms. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that we are not going on current gen, rather we are going on current gen, it’s not related at this point. It just means we haven’t had anything to share”

There’s no word yet on when WWE 2K15 will be on sale, but an October/November release date seems likely.

  • CM Punk’s First Post-WWE TV Appearance Possibly Cancelled

    14

It appears as though CM Punk’s scheduled appearance on the Comedy Central show “@Midnight” has been cancelled.

A fan named John Carr tweeted Chris Hardwick and asked, “The question everyone wants answered: Is CM Punk still going to appear on @midnight next week?” Hardwick simply replied:

The “@Midnight” appearance was to be Punk’s first time appearing on television since his WWE departure, and would have likely been the first time Punk would be asked to address the situation publicly. As of right now, Punk’s only comments of any kind since leaving WWE came in the form of the tweet he posted the day the news broke. That tweet read, “Thanks for all the support. Keep being you guys, it’s pretty cool.”

As of right now, Punk’s appearance on the show has not officially been cancelled, and if it has, there is no word yet on if it will be rescheduled for a later date.

AJ Styles Speaks On TNA Going Out Of Business, Sting To WWE & More

    39

The following are highlights of a recent SLAM! Wrestling interview with AJ Styles:

On his dream opponent: “Seriously, some (dream matches) for me are with guys that I may never get the opportunity to wrestle. I’d like to wrestle Rey Mysterio, I think he and I could really tear things up. There are definitely some guys in the Fed (WWE) that I think I could have good matches with, that would also be dream matches for the fans as well. But who knows if that ever comes or not.”

On Sting to WWE: “I hope to see Sting wrestle The Undertaker at WrestleMania. I don’t know if that’s going to happen, that may just be wishful thinking. But I can appreciate the (thinking).”

On TNA going out of business: “I’m not saying that they’re going under, but it sure does seem that way. They’re really saving a lot of money in places. If they’re so desperate to save money that they cut loose one of their top guys, the one guy that was known as the TNA guy, they must be hurting pretty bad. Either that or they think that loyalty means absolutely nothing to them, or they think I suck. I don’t know which one of those it is.”

  • Backstage Update On Stacy Keibler’s WWE Return: HOF Induction?, WMXXX Role

    63

  • HHH Speaks On Next Week’s RAW Main Event, Kane Attacking Daniel Bryan

  • Jim Ross Speaks On CM Punk’s WWE Departure, Current WWE Locker Room, More

    8

The following are highlights from a new Newsday.com interview with WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross:

On the current WWE locker room compared to the Attitude Era: “This whole locker room has a different feel to it, and a different — they’re not as edgy as the Attitude Era locker room. They’re not as competitive. I don’t know that they’re as hungry. But now, CM Punk is different. [Compared with] today’s corporate wrestler, CM Punk is a little bit of a rogue. And I don’t mean that in a negative way.”

On CM Punk: “Over the last two of three years, he’s been my favorite WWE performer to watch in the ring, without question. He would’ve been a huge star in the Attitude Era, without question. Here’s the deal: He’s a very cerebral guy, who has an old-school spirit, that really cares about every aspect of the business. I think that he needed time off, ample time off, to recharge his batteries. I think he has, for lack of a better term, a major case of burnout. And I think the problem should have been recognized and addressed much earlier than letting it get to a head and him being so frustrated and such a sense of hopelessness that he decided to go home. Walking away from a problem is never a solution. Never. Solve the problem.”

  • Backstage Concern Over Alberto Del Rio Leaving WWE

    85

There was talk backstage at Monday’s WWE RAW that Alberto Del Rio has been making noise about potentially leaving the company when his current WWE contract expires, according to a report at PWInsider.com.

Apparently Del Rio has been frustrated after going from being a top guy on the SmackDown brand to what he considers to be someone simply being fed to Batista. A lot of the talk in the company is that due to Del Rio’s age, him talking about retirement in the past and the fact that he has had a considerable amount of success and notiriety in Mexico, that maybe it’s getting close to the time that he eventually walks away.

There is no definitive word at this point as to whether or not Del Rio has started working on a new contract, but there is at least a certain amount of concern over his future after the talk at RAW this past Monday night.

  • Jim Cornette Talks About CM Punk’s WWE Departure

    25

Between The Ropes interview with Jim Cornette
    Host: Brian Fritz
    Interview available at Betweentheropes.com

On his place in wrestling history: “I would eventually like to be remembered as the second best manager ever in wrestling next to Bobby Heenan. If I could get that, I’d be happy.”

On having any regrets or being too outspoken: “I’ve been cranky with people in the past. I get cranky because I always place more importance on the quality of what I was doing because I was a fan and all performers are insecure I guess. I was always a wrestling fan. If I was allowed in this business, I wanted to get it right. I wanted to be noted for being a great whatever I was doing at the time and that was more valuable to me than money. It was never a job to me. So, I’ve probably short-changed myself but at the same time I would not have had as many of the wonderful experiences that I have had if I hadn’t pissed some of the people off I’ve pissed off.”

On why there is still typecasting in wrestling when it comes to size of wrestlers and that hasn’t changed considering all of the changes in wrestling over the years: “I don’t ****ing know what the people looking for talent are looking for these days. It’s almost to the point where I hate doing a wrestling school seminar because if I tell a guy ‘you’re great, I’d hire you in a second’ that’s the kiss of death. I look for drive and passion for the business and aptitude, a certain amount of look but a certain amount of potential also for a look that you might have. And a guy who is a natural performer in the ring. I don’t know. As I always say for the type of people who like that type of thing, that’s the type of thing those people like.”

On CM Punk leaving the WWE: “I can totally identify with CM Punk. His body is beaten up, he’s been on the road for ten years, he doesn’t live big and I’m sure he’s got more money than the federal government and he doesn’t like what they’re doing with him and he’s just tired of the whole thing and he wants to go rest. And he said at a comic convention one of these days he’s going to go buy a cabin in the middle of nowhere and we’re never going to see him again. You know, I wish I could have been like that. I said I’ve made six-figure incomes most of the last 30 years but I never made a million dollars. And guys these days can make a million dollars. If I had made a million dollars in one year, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. I’d be in the castle but no one would ever see me again. All in all, ****, Punk, good for you! Go home and don’t come back until you want to. I love that. That is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard.”

Former WWE Diva Speaks On Her Hatred For Vince Russo, WrestleMania & More

    10

SESCOOPS.COM reader Neal Jones sent along the following:

Recap of Leilani Kai on In Your Head Wrestling Radio
    by Vic Schiavone

Host Jack E. Jones welcomed legendary ladies wrestler Leilani Kai to IYH Wrestling Radio.

    Highlights included the following:

What was the build-up like for you for your match in WrestleMania I? Could you see how big this was going to be?: “I didn’t really realize it at first. I did a match with Wendi (Richter), and I retained the belt, but afterwards I had actually gone to Japan and I didn’t get back till probably two days before the actual event of WrestleMania. I didn’t realize how big it was until I got there. Once I was in the arena, there was so much excitement going on; people running around everywhere, and seeing celebrities and all. I didn’t realize how big it was, not at that moment I didn’t. I realized it afterwards; they had a big huge party and everybody was there and having a good time and dancing. It was a little bit different, but I didn’t realize really how big it was until I was there. I didn’t hear much talk about it when I was overseas…I didn’t really realize how big it was going to be, but it was the most exciting night of my whole life. I loved it; it was a lot of fun.”

Where did your hatred for Vince Russo start?: “It started when he wanted me to do mud wrestling. I had come to the event, I think it was Denver, Colorado, to wrestle a lady named Brandy Alexander, and they just changed it on me and wanted me to do mud wrestling on the show. I was like, ‘You’ve got to be out of your mind; I’m not going to do anything like that.’ Now that I think about it, I would do anything if I can let him get in the mud with me, maybe in a cage, and I’ll wrestle him and let him see what it feels like. I’d love to do that; get in a mud wrestling match with him in a cage. But that was an awful long time ago, and I just didn’t care for that at all. That’s not what I’m about, and it really upset me pretty bad; it wasn’t a very good scene. I really don’t think that he knew what he was doing, I really don’t. It didn’t do a lot for a lot of the young talent getting in the business; it wasn’t good for them at all. I don’t think they were treated right and he just messed it up with that cartoonish-type thing. I think it messed it up for a lot of the guys who were really trying to make it in the business and worked so hard to pave for pro wrestling. I just didn’t care for the way he pursued his characters or whatever cartoonish things he did. It really made me mad when he said that to me; I was really upset, I think I really went off on him.”

    Other topics discussed included:
·Who are some of the younger female wrestlers that stand out to her?
·What does she think the differences are between women’s wrestling now and when she broke in?
·How did the match against Alundra Blayze at WrestleMania X come about?

  • Ron Simmons Speaks On Mae Young’s Death, Atlanta Wrestling Fans & More

    4

SESCOOPS.COM reader Neal Jones sent along the following:

Recap of Ron Simmons on In Your Head Wrestling Radio
    by Vic Schiavone

Host Jack E. Jones welcomed WWE Hall-of-Famer Ron Simmons to IYH Wrestling Radio

    Highlights included the following:

How do wrestling fans in Atlanta stand out from fans in other parts of the country?: “Well, I think that they’ve got a little bit of background and history, because you had Georgia Championship Wrestling, you had NWA, WCW…there are a lot of roots in professional wrestling here. It goes way back, and believe me, you are talking about excited fans; I mean hardcore, wrestling fans, who know their history of it, know the origins of it, know the guys and the different generations of the wrestlers. The South is really a wrestling haven for people that have grown up in the business and in particular Atlanta.”

Mae Young passed away recently; do you have any memories of her you would like to share?: “The only thing I can say about Mae Young is that it was just an honor to have been around her for the many years that I had the privilege of seeing her even in action and being around her. She was just a great woman; always cheerful, always had something uplifting to tell you. Along with (The Fabulous) Moolah, her partner, when you saw one of them you might as well had seen them both because they were very much alike, and they were fantastic women as well as great wrestlers period. I don’t want to say just for being a woman, I mean period; as tough as they come, and she will surely be missed. God bless her.”

    Other topics discussed included:
·What were his thoughts on Ole Anderson and what was it like being in the ring with him?
·What was it like wrestling with Butch Reed in the tag team Doom?
·What is his favorite horror movie?

Ron will be appearing in Atlanta on February 7-9 at Days of the Dead for Sinners and Saints Tattoo. For further information, go to http://www.daysofthedead.net/ and http://www.sinnersandsaintstattoo.com/

The playground build serves as part of WWE’s week-long lineup of community outreach activities leading up to WrestleMania 30 on Sunday, April 6 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

“At KaBOOM!, we believe that play matters,” said KaBOOM! Founder and CEO Darell Hammond. “We recognize the importance of having access to a safe and engaging place to play – knowing that it has the power to transform children and communities to be healthier, happier and more resilient. We are honored to partner with WWE to help give the children of this community the childhood they deserve with this play space.”

“We’re proud to play a small role in the great work that KaBOOM! does to ensure kids have opportunities to stay active in safe environments,” said Stephanie McMahon, Chief Brand Officer, WWE. “Our partnership with KaBOOM! enables us to leave a lasting impact on children in New Orleans.”

WWE will utilize all its assets, including TV, live events, PSAs, in-arena, digital and social media to generate awareness of the KaBOOM! playground build and partnership.
