  • Jim Ross Blog: Monday’s RAW, Randy Orton, Langston’s Title Win, Pat Patterson

    8

The following are highlights from the latest online blog by WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross.

On Randy Orton: “Is Randy Orton a fan favorite or a villain? One can’t be both, as a rule….but, of course, I’m out of touch with today’s product. I think that I may have missed the class on the invisible line between good and evil. In real life that may be true but last I looked pro wrestling on TV isn’t real life.”

On Big E. Langston: “Congrats to Big E Langston for becoming the IC Champion. I wish Big E nothing but success. The former Iowa Hawkeye Defensive Tackle is a beast of an athlete with great integrity. One can’t get too many like him in any locker room. I got to know “E” well in NXT. Fans have loved him there for a long time at Full Sail Arena. Hopefully many of today’s impatient fans will allow Big E to continue to evolve as he’s not even close to reaching his potential.”

On Pat Patterson: “I’m told Pat Patterson is writing his memoirs and after seeing much of Pat’s photo collection from over his career I’m betting the book will be great. Pat has a tremendous sense of humor and was one of the best in ring performers ever along with being a tremendous wrestling strategist. Pat’s journey as a gay man in a largely homophobic, alpha Caucasian male, good old boys network known as pro wrestling in the territory days is one of courage and conviction. I can’t wait to read it. I learned a great deal about the wrestling biz and life from Pat.”

Alberto Del Rio Talks About Unifying WWE’s Top Belts, Total Divas Viewership

    23

    – Sunday’s episode of WWE Total Divas on E! drew an average of 1,411,000 viewers, up from the previous week.

    – Alberto Del Rio recently did an interview with DigitalSpy.com to promote Sunday’s WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Unifying The WWE & World Heavyweight Titles: “Of course that can happen, but I don’t think it’s something that we need right now. I think it’s okay if we’ve got the WWE Title with one person and the World Heavyweight title with another one. That way you have two different storylines and you’re talking about two major titles to be defended and be present in every single pay-per-view.”

WrestleMania XXX: “To be honest, no. It’s the same for everybody else, we don’t know what we’re going to be doing. I know I’m gonna be there, that’s for sure. I’m going to be in one of the main matches. I don’t know if it’s going to be for

Kassius Ohno Talks WWE Release, Possibly Going To TNA, His Time In NXT

    12

The following are highlights from a Busted Open Radio interview with former WWE NXT star Kassius Ohno (aka Chris Hero):

On how he handled his release from WWE: “Do I want to wrestle at WrestleMania? Do I want to be in the main event at WrestleMania? Do I want to be in pay-per-views every month? Do I want to be in Raw every week? Of course, they are all amazing things and especially with all of the talented guys and all of my peers that I see and when I see Seth Rollins, (Antonio) Cesaro, Bryan (Danielson), (C.M.) Punk, the Wyatt Family, the Shield, when I see those guys rather than be jealous, of course there is some professional jealousy where its good hearted: ‘It’s like God damn it, I want that spot’ but it’s in the best way possible. I am genuinely inspired by all of these guys.

“So do I want to be in there and carve out my own niche? Of course, I do. But at this time, I have no choice in the matter. I can say: ‘Oh, what went wrong’ but that won’t get me any answers. I was ok before WWE and I will be ok after WWE and I talked to a lot of fans over the last couple days and the support has been mind-blowing. To look at some of these people’s eyes and they are genuinely telling me that they appreciate me and they are glad to see, it means so much to me. What I keep saying is, it’s not like I broke my neck and I can’t ever wrestle again. I can still go out and do what I love and do what I loved since I was ten years old and to look at it that way and there are so many people that do not have the opportunity, so why am I going to be upset or why am I going to dwell on the fact that I don’t get to do this on the highest level possible. It’s easy to be positive because I still get to out and kick ass, I get to travel, and I get to see my friends and the world. I didn’t have to conjure up that much to get through this.”

On his thoughts on his lengthy stay in NXT: “To be honest, it was a great time. The time that I spent with a lot of my peers and I have great stories and great experiences. I got to learn from some of the best ever like Dusty Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat, or you look at the door and the Undertaker is here is today. There were certain things that I had to adapt too and get used too but at the end of the day, you just have to remind yourself why you are in it and what you’re doing. I had so many positive experiences that I am not going to let a release make me look back at the last two months of my life in a negative way. I have garnered relationships with different people that are going to last a life time. I did enjoy my time and I got to work with some awesome people and I got to have some fun matches and I got to experiment and get outside of my box and try different things.”

On his thoughts about not getting called up to the main roster: “I would say that the issue was less conditioning and more of an overall look. Anybody that has ever known me or been in the ring with me knows that I can wrestle all day and all night long. I don’t get tired, that’s not the issue. It’s more of a cosmetic issue and my body type is different. I have different ways of working out and my eating habits are at the time. Anybody that has followed my career has seen a lot of fluctuation. I have gone from no muscle tone whatsoever to plumping up to three hundred pounds to cutting that off and becoming more toned and then cutting as much body fat as possible, so I have had my fluctuations and I’ve switched things around so I think that was more of a cosmetic look and my coaches or the powers-that-be were all very supportive. It’s really hard to pin point any one thing.

“I think it’s just a matter of they knew who I was, they knew what I presented, what I had to offer, I just don’t think they saw anything for me in the immediate future, they thought it would be best to let me go and let me do my own thing for a little a while. Like I said, I left on good terms, I’ve got so many good friends there, a lot of people that are in my corner, and a lot of people that have supported me through the years. Will I be back? Who knows? Maybe or maybe not. But it’s not something that I got fired and was told never to come back; it was nothing like that at all. To me, pro wrestling is art and art is an opinion and its perspective. It’s what this person thinks against what this person thinks. There are so many guys that think that Shawn Michaels was the greatest wrestler of all time and there are some that think he is the most over rated wrestler of all time. I have some fans that adore me and would go to the ends of the earth to watch me wrestle live, follow me, buy my t-shirts and there are some that don’t see it and I understand that. There are musical acts and bands that people love and I’ve tried to give them a chance and I’m just not feeling it. That doesn’t mean that they are not good because art is subjective.

“When you have a business that’s based on art and perspective and opinion, there are always going to be head scratchers. Do I think I am one of the most talented pro wrestlers alive? Your damn right I do and I know the work that I have put in and I know what I am capable of but at the same time, I can’t measure myself up against other people because how do you justify that? How do you say: ‘This guy is good on the microphone, this guy is good in the ring, this guy is better technically, and this guy is more charismatic’ so it’s like: ‘How do you measure that?’ It’s really difficult, it’s really subjective and a lot of this conversation happens because we all love wrestling and we all have different tastes and different opinions. I think a lot of that can be broken down to perspective.”

On the possibility of TNA being an option for him: “At this point, I am looking at all of my options. I would never say no to something based on reputation. I am booked up for the rest of the year pretty much and I am keeping next year open as far as international dates and I want to maximize my opportunities and be able to hit up Europe for a couple weeks and I definitely want to go back to Japan. I’m trying to get that figured out. If there was an interest with TNA, it is an offer that I would definitely entertain but I just want to set enough while the iron is hot and set the best landscape for my career and where I go because I know everyone is happy to see me and its cool: ‘Hey, Chris Hero is back’ but I do realize that it’s not going to last forever so I am going to have to continue to evolve and bring something different to the table. It will be interesting to see on how this plays out with all of the different companies that I am working for in the next couple months.”

On the next call up from NXT to WWE: “It’s so tough because I think the whole time that I was down there, we had about ten guys on deck at all times that can just be pulled and introduced right away. There are so many talented guys across the board whether it’s on the microphone or in the ring. Off the top of my head, Xavier Woods has been ready to go. He is so talented and he is so ready to go. You have a guy like Adrian Neville who is legitimately one of a kind and one of those spectacular athletes in wrestling history. He has that flow about him when he is in the ring, he is not a guy that is going to take the microphone and spend twenty minutes on the microphone telling you a detailed story but he will tell you that story with his physicality which is incredible and you have Sami Zayn who is just awesome.

“He is a guy that has busted his ass and has had a lot of doubters through the years but he has produced some of the best matches that I have ever seen in my life. I don’t want to slant anybody by not mentioning them but those are the guys that come to mind. So many talented guys and characters like Tyler Breeze. Tyler is very unique and you take an idea and put a modern spin on it and it’s entertaining and those are guys that I want to succeed and guys that I want to keep watching. They make me tune in because when they succeed, I feel like succeed because we are peers. We belong together before I even signed whenever I would see Bryan, Punk or Cesaro, there is a part of me in that too. I just love wrestling, I love this business and I want to see everyone succeed.”

Chris Jericho Talks About A Potential Return To WWE, His Web Series & New Podcast

    6

Chris Jericho recently spoke with Zap2It.com about his new web series and his WWE career. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Returning To WWE & A Possible Royal Rumble Appearance:

“That’s the thing. “Again.” We’ve been there and done that. Plus people seem to put too much stock in the Fozzy dates. It doesn’t really work like that, for me. We’re in the studio in January to work on a new record.”

“Not that I couldn’t come back to wrestling, but it would have to be under the right circumstances with the right angle. I enjoyed earlier this year when I came back, it was one of the best runs of my career, but I found it to be a bit listless. There wasn’t a specific mission, like when I came back in 2012 and it was the CM Punk story. This time it was just working with random people, which was fun. At this point though, to come back to wrestling, which I still love, it would have to be for a specific angle that I could really sink my teeth into.”

“If not, I don’t know that I would come back and I don’t know if they’d want me to come back. It’s very egotistical of me to think I can come and go whenever I want. They say it’s cool, but Vince [McMahon] could change his mind and say, “I think you should stay for a year and if not we can’t really use you.”

“Who knows? I’ve spent the last ten years working on my life after wrestling. I’m 43 years old. I still feel great and I can still work great, but eventually I’m not going to be able to do a Chris Jericho match at the level I can do it, which is five-star, balls-out every night, whether you’re at Madison Square Garden for “Wrestlemania” or in Covina, Cal. for a house show. Ten or 10,000, I work the same.”

“Beyond that, there’s a lot of stuff going on in my world. I just signed on to do a podcast with Podcast One. They do Steve Austin’s, Adam Carolla’s, Seth Rogen’s. There’s always things like that popping up and I think a lot of the time wrestling fans want you to be tied to wrestling for the rest of your life and unfortunately it doesn’t really work that way. For me, I’ve never though of myself as just a wrestler, but as an entertainer. Anything that falls under the umbrella, I’m going to do it.”

His Multiple Projects Outside of WWE:

“It’s really kind of rolling now, where cool opportunities are popping up quicker and quicker. That takes away time for wrestling. When I come back, I like to do all the shows. I don’t want to just do TV or pay per views. I like being on the road and working with the guys.”

“I don’t know what the future in wrestling holds, because I haven’t gotten a lot of feedback from WWE either. I don’t know exactly where I would fit in with them at this time. They’ve got their storylines locked in, and you can already kind of see what they’re going to do for “Wrestlemania.” But it would have to be something very special for me to come back to. If not, and wrestling fans might hate me for this, I don’t need the big retirement tour. I don’t need the last match, I don’t even really want to do that, like the [Ric] Flair thing and the Shawn [Michaels] thing.”

“I’m not that type of guy, I like doing the opposite of what people want. I just want to fade into the sunset and never be seen again.”

His WWE Schedule, Always Returning & Leaving:

“Yeah, it’s kind of the way that I do things. And I think I’m real easy-going now when it comes to wrestling, which people get mad about as well. They complain that I lose all the time, which I don’t. But they think I do. It’s show business, man. Having said that, I’m not going to come back to lose every night, but if I’m going to work for Steven Spielberg and he tells me that my character in “Saving Private Ryan II” dies 15 minutes into the show and I say, “No, I’m not going to do that.” Well, he tells me to go away and hires somebody else to do that. If I’m going to go back and work for WWE for two months, I have to do what the boss says.”

    WWE RAW (11/11): The “YES!”

The Main Event, Rey Returns and The Shield vs The Wyatts

The Usos, Rhodes Brothers, Daniel Bryan, CM Punk and Rey Mysterio celebrate at the end of Raw
The Usos, Rhodes Brothers, Daniel Bryan, CM Punk and Rey Mysterio celebrate at the end of Raw

When I attended the WWE Hell-In-A-Cell Pay Per View and WWE Raw the next night in Orlando FL, I had a big chip on my shoulder. I was none too pleased that Daniel Bryan was being taken out of the WWE Title picture.

I was happy however, that it appeared that the Wyatts were going to get a high profile feud with both Daniel Bryan and CM Punk. At the time of that Raw 3 weeks ago. I had made a prediction that Daniel Bryan CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Golddust and two more would take on The Wyatts & The Shield at Survivor Series, in a traditional elimination match. It turned out that, the match would end up happening on The Raw before the Survivor Series.  So I was close, but now I have flight and a ticket to Boston this sunday and a 7 on 7 divas match to look forward to instead. Are you able to read into my sarcasm?

The main event was electric. Everything that should have been saved for the Survivor Series. So while the lack of this match will hurt the Survivor Series, this damn sure was #BestForBusiness on Raw. The Shield / Wyatt family tease is exciting and something new, and I hope WWE cashes in on this at the right time and right place, because that is a match I want to see in the future.  (Please dont’ mess this one up WWE!)

The return of Rey was unexpected and answered the question who the mystery partner will be in the Traditional Survivor Series Match between the Rhodes Brothers & Usos, now with Rey Rey vs The Shield and The Real Americans.

Big E. Langston Wins the Intercontinental Championship

Big E. Langston will try to prove that holding the Intercontinental Championship one be a ball and chain.
Big E. Langston will try to prove that holding the Intercontinental Championship one be a ball and chain.

How ironic the first time I can remember the WWE ever doing the in-ring introductions post-entrance for an Intercontinental Championship match, and low and behold the championship changed hands. (Smirk)

For several years any championship beside the WWE Championship has been treated with disrespect, with the champion losing damn near every non-title match. (See: Dolph Ziggler, Curtis Axel, Alberto Del Rio, heck even Damien Sandow with his briefcase.)

Big E. is hot now, his theme music has been remixed, and he’s on a rocket push. Let’s hope it stays that way, and perhaps this title will mean something. Although don’t expect the in-ring introductions
for the IC belt again anytime soon.

The Real Americans Vs The Miz & Kofi Kingston

    We The People!
    We The People!

The Miz turned heel on his partner Kofi during this match, but what I really enjoy is seeing The Real Americans week in and week out, have some good matches. It’s no doubt that Claudio is the MVP of the group. Watching Claudio…er..Antonio each week is awesome, did you see there was a Cessaro section? The crowd is getting louder and louder each week saying along with Zeb Colter “We The People” which only means one thing. WWE will take that away, or perhaps turn the group babyface. Knowing the WWE, they will take the first option.

Vince McMahon On RAW Next Week?, Steve Austin Interviews Wrestling Reporter

    2

    – Local advertisements for next week’s post-Survivor Series edition of WWE RAW are promoting “The McMahon’s, Triple H and more.” Whether or not this is another case of early advertising, or “The McMahon’s” meaning Stephanie McMahon and Triple H, even though it’s plural, remains to be seen. If you go by WWE advertising, it appears as though Vince McMahon will be back on RAW next week. He has been rumored to return for a while now, although his return continues to get pushed back each time it’s scheduled to happen.

    – Also announced for next week’s RAW are dark matches featuring John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship and Randy Orton vs. Big Show for the WWE Championship, both of which will be Survivor Series rematches by that point.

    – The latest edition of the “Steve Austin Show” podcast is now online. This week’s first show features Steve Austin interviewing veteran pro wrestling journalist Wade Keller. You can check out the show online at PodcastOne.com.

    WWE RAW Opener:

RAW opens with a recap video highlighting everything that went down in the absence of The Authority last week. Big E. Langston vs. Curtis Axel for the WWE Intercontinental Championship is announced for tonight, as well as a 12-man tag-team main event featuring CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, The Usos, and Goldust & Cody Rhodes vs. The Wyatt Family and The Shield.

In-Ring Segment: The Authority, Randy Orton, Brad Maddox & Vickie Guerrero

Triple H’s music hits and down comes The Authority, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. HHH talks about how vital The Authority’s presence is at RAW each week. He says that was proven in their absence last week. He talks about being disappointed in how RAW turned out last week. HHH says Brad Maddox and Vickie Guerrero will be dealt with tonight. Stephanie McMahon says the great news is that they are incredibly well rested and they’re back. She says this Sunday is Survivor Series. With that said, Randy Orton’s music hits and out comes the WWE Champion. Orton doesn’t look pleased as he heads to the ring. Orton blames Triple H and Stephanie McMahon for not spelling out who was supposed to remain in charge. He says they didn’t make sure to tell The Shield not to watch his back last week. He says they’re the ones who gave Big Show an undeserved title shot. He holds them directly responsible for being chokeslammed through the table last week. He says they should be protecting their most valuable asset, the face of the WWE, a little bit. Stephanie says he’s probably right. Orton says he probably won’t be able to beat Big Show by himself at Survivor Series, so he asks them what they plan to do about it. HHH yells and asks who he thinks he’s talking to. He says the face of the company. HHH says he means the face of their company. Stephanie continues to talk and we hear Vickie Guerrero say “excuse me” in a very soft voice. Brad Maddox and Vickie come out to the top of the stage. Brad says last week was all Vickie’s fault. HHH says it doesn’t matter who’s at fault, they all have to pay tonight. Stephanie says with all the handicap matches they made last week, they’ve become desensitized to how difficult it is to compete week-in and week-out. Because of that, they will both compete in matches tonight. Vickie will go one-on-one with the Divas Champion, AJ Lee. Brad will go one-on-one with the WWE Champion, Randy Orton. Their match is no disqualification. And that match is right now. HHH says “that’ll do.” Brad turns to run away but is stopped by Kane. Kane forces Brad to turn around. HHH’s music hits and The Authority head up the ramp. We head to our first commercial of the evening.

    No Disqualification Match:
    Randy Orton vs. Brad Maddox

We return from commercial and the bell rings. Maddox, still in a suit, is out on the floor while Orton is in the ring staring him down. Maddox has his suit coat off, but is still wearing a button up shirt and dress pants. Maddox runs behind the announcers and grabs a mic. Maddox tells Orton he doesn’t have to do this. Orton chases him down and grabs Maddox. Maddox blasts Orton with the mic. Orton drops. Maddox shoves Orton into the ring post. Back in the ring, Maddox nails Orton with a DDT while Orton was on his knees. Maddox quickly covers Orton and gets a two count. Orton is finally recovering and he does the slow head-turn and looks at Maddox. Orton grabs Maddox and throws him out to the floor. Orton throws Maddox across the announce table. Orton slams Maddox into the ringside steps. He tears Maddox’s shirt off and chops him. Orton drapes Maddox across the ringside barricade and hits his trademark DDT spot onto the floor. Orton drags Maddox by his shirt across the ground. Orton grabs the mic that Maddox hit him with earlier and throws it in the ring. He then throws Maddox into the ring. Orton lays across Maddox in the ring and blasts Maddox repeatedly with the microphone. Orton has the psycho peepers going now, as he looks crazy and pissed. The referee calls for the bell. The referee just yelled out to the floor that Randy’s the winner. Remember, this was a no-DQ match, so I guess the referee forfitted for Maddox. Who knows.

    Winner: Randy Orton

    – Big Show vs. Ryback is announced for later in the show.

    – Curtis Axel is shown walking by himself to the ring. His opponent, Big E. Langston, is shown walking to the ring next. The WWE Intercontinental Championship match is after this commercial break.

Backstage: Brad Maddox Stretchered Out, Vickie’s Next

We see highlights courtesy of the WWE App of Brad Maddox getting stretchered out of the building. We return live and we see Maddox being carried backstage. Vickie Guerrero sees him going by, and her jaw drops, knowing she’s got the same potential fate later tonight.

    WWE Intercontinental Championship:
Curtis Axel (c) vs. Big E. Langston

Langston comes out first, followed by the current Intercontinental Champion, Curtis Axel. Paul Heyman is not coming out right Axel, for whatever that’s worth. Justin Roberts does the official ring introductions, pay-per-view style, after each guy’s entrance. The bell rings and Langston immediately takes Axel down. Axel starts fighting back with punches. Langston catches Axel coming off the ropes with a big shoulder tackle. Langston follows that up with a backbreaker and a near fall. Langston hits a big back-suplex on Axel for another near fall. Axel rolls out to the floor to recollect himself. Langston goes out after him. Axel rolls back in the ring. Langston does as well. Axel curls up in the corner like a baby. He gets up and Langston clotheslines him down. Langston is in complete control of this match early on. Axel manages to clothesline Langston with the top rope. He follows that up by going to work on Langston with punches. We head to a mid-match commercial. We return from commercial and Axel has Langston in a headlock. Langston powers out. Langston spears Axel in the corner. Axel responds with a perfect dropkick on Langston for a near fall. Axel goes to work on Langston with a bunch of clubbing blows. Michael Cole mentions on commentary that both Ryback and Axel dumped Heyman last week and declared themselves “no longer Paul Heyman guys.” Axel has Langston in a front facelock, but Langston powers out and throws Axel half-way across the ring. Langston hits a belly-to-belly suplex on Axel. Langston comes off the ropes and hits a big splash on Axel for a close near fall. Langston goes for his finisher but Axel escapes. Langston goes for it again and this time he hits it. 1-2-3. We have a new Intercontinental Champion.

Winner and NEW WWE Intercontinental Champion: Big E. Langston
