Titus O’Neil Speaks On Friendship With Batista, Vomiting On Zeb Colter, More

10

The following are highlights from a recent Hampton Roads interview with WWE Superstar Titus O’Neil:

On his friendship with Batista, and how Batista convinced him to become a wrestler: “I used to be, like, ‘No, I’m not doing it. I’m going into coaching; that’s what I want to do,’ Dave, who’s probably one of my best friends, was, like, ‘But I really think you’d do well in it. You have the size and the charisma and the athleticism to do it.’ But I just kept saying, ‘No, I don’t think it’s for me.’ ”

On how he got his start in WWE: “It was really just blind faith based on what Dave had been telling me, but I walked in and had about a 15-minute conversation with (trainer and former WWE wrestler) Steve Keirn about wrestling and trying out and stuff like that. It was only about 15 minutes after I finished talking to him and left that the WWE called me and said they wanted me to try out. They had a show that day, so I went and picked my kids up from school, and I asked them if they wanted to go to a wrestling match. The next thing you know, two weeks after that, Daddy’s wrestling for the WWE.”

On vomiting on Zeb Colter: “I guess that’s something I can put under my belt: I can vomit on cue. Hey, our job is to entertain people, and I guess it entertained a lot of people…. There are a lot of people who want to hit Zeb Colter in the mouth on a regular basis, but me throwing up on him was just as good.”

    4

The following are highlights from a recent Busted Open satelitte radio interview with former TNA wrestler AJ Styles:

On his return to Ring Of Honor: “I’m excited. I really am. The different things that have happened in Ring Of Honor and for guys that have left–a lot of great wrestlers have left but I’m honored that I can come back. That they would welcome me with open arms and I’m looking forward to getting into a Ring of Honor ring and mixing it up with some guys.”

On his ROH return creating a buzz around Ring Of Honor: “I can’t imagine that I am–that it’s blowing up or getting a little bit more attention because of me but–because Ring Of Honor is such a great place to work and it’s very respected. I don’t know anybody who’s ever really watched the show that hasn’t enjoyed it. So it’s going to be fun going back and a lot of people think that I did this on purpose. That the very place I’d first be wrestling after my contract is up with TNA is in Nashville, Tennessee with Ring Of Honor. That wasn’t planned that way. It wasn’t on purpose, it was coincidental. But then again if you’re gonna start back with ROH, what a place–I mean I started in Nashville, so a lot of people–at least my career, as far as TNA started in Nashville. They know me up there, you know? So it’s gonna be, it’s gonna be fun.”

On being featured by TNA despite their negotiations falling through: “Well, it seems that the dirt sheets are way off on this one. How many times did you hear that I was signed with TNA and now I’m not signed with TNA? They’re way off on this thing. They’ve been all over and then there’s people saying, ‘Oh, it’s a work, it’s a work.’ Because they don’t want to be fooled and they are not going to admit when they are wrong when I haven’t signed a contract. I don’t know man, it’s just–it’s been a crazy time for me, these couple of weeks. And I don’t want you guys to think that I’m mad at TNA, cause I’m not. I’m not bitter towards them. I don’t hate them. I hope they do well. I got a lot of good friends that wrestle there and I hope that it’s successful. It was just an opportune time for me to take an opportunity to go wrestle somewhere else, where I may not have that opportunity again. And that’s basically what this has come down to. And I left the door open for TNA and I hope they continue to leave the door open, that you know maybe sometime in the future, I will be back. But that I don’t know and like I said, I left the door open.”

On people who think his situation with TNA is a work: “Well, I mean, and I can understand why people want to believe that it is a work. Because they don’t want to; first of all I’m sure they don’t want to believe that I’m actually not working for TNA. Second, I told them that I didn’t have a contract in the first place. Cause I didn’t. I had an extension. So I understand why they might believe it’s a work, and why it’s hard to believe but it’s even hard for me to believe. That after working with a company for 11 years, and busting your tail and doing what you thought was right and doing it to the best of your ability that it would even come down to a negotiation where it would take a long time or anything like that. I just figured that we’d find a way. And the timing, you know it just had me where I had to make a decision. I had to do something and I just figured that this is an opportunity and I need to take it.”

On adjusting to life outside of TNA after being there for so many years: “Well, I think the biggest problem for me right now is when I do interviews is to stop saying ‘we’. A number of times I’ve said ‘we’ when it’s not ‘we’ anymore, it’s ‘me’. And ‘them’. That’s my biggest problem that I am having right now. Because it’s so hard to get used to. I mean, 11 years might not sound like a long time to someone but when you work anywhere for that long of time, it’s like you can’t get it out of your head. It’s just a force of habit. Being there. But it’s something that I’m gonna have to get used to and get used to it quick. This is my first match at Ring Of Honor, this Saturday; tomorrow. And I think once I get in the ring and start rolling around, and weekend after weekend and week after week and being on the Independent scene, I’ll get used to it pretty quick.”

On hardcore TNA fans who are upset that he is leaving: “Well, I’ve definitely have had a couple of tweets, with some being angry with me. And I’m not going to retweet them, I’m not going to respond to them. I’m not going to respond to someone who is just being a jerk even though I want to. Just a number of things, like for instance some guy said that ‘AJ, if you’re done with TNA, then that’s a big F you to me.’ Like saying I’m screwing him. My argument would be to him if you would like to pay me to work there then I’d be more than happy. Negotiations are what they are and sometimes you can’t agree on something and at some point you need to make a decision that benefits your family. One guy brought up this–this is the most ridiculous thing–did you know that I guess, Ring Of Honor’s website there is an under 18 kind of–I don’t know, soft porn or whatever it is, that sponsors them? I don’t know if it sponsors the website, I don’t know anything about it. I’m not filming any movies with soft porn if it makes him feel any better. I’m not doing that. I am there to wrestle and that’s it. I’m sure if we knew where a lot of money comes from; from different businesses; we would be less likely to support them. I am supporting my family. That’s the bottom line. It has nothing to do with some soft porn site. I don’t really know what it is. And he’s attacking my beliefs. And I want to say to this guy ‘well you without sin, throw the first stone.’ They always want to bash something that you do. No matter what it is but it relies on me taking care of my family and what I think is right for them.”

On if he thinks ROH has a brighter future than TNA: “I mean sure I do. I’m going there so I would think that the sky’s the limit, man. I wanna go and help build something that you take pride in and you fall in love with it. As I did with TNA and don’t get me wrong, like I said, I don’t hate TNA but if the opportunity comes to make ROH bigger and I can have a part in that then absolutely I want to do something like that.”

On whether or not ROH is more about the wrestling than TNA: “It is and I do know that you have to create characters. I understand that. But then again you can’t fight someone on their field; on their playing field. You gotta accentuate what you do best. And Ring of Honor knows that wrestling is what they do best. And that is their strongest asset and I think that at a point, TNA thought the same thing about themselves. And then they tried to move on and tried to be bigger. Which is what you should do. But it was the little things like taking away the six-sided ring and putting the squared ring back in there. You realize that they weren’t really being different; they were being the same. And to me that was a bad move.”

On the length of his ROH contract: “Well, I think we are gonna sit down tomorrow at the show and talk about that. I definitely want to be there. I definitely want to represent them. Like I said tomorrow we’ll talk about how far we are going to go with it.”

On how he felt when his TNA contract officially expired: “Well, when you know you don’t have a job it’s pretty scary. It’s heartbreaking, really. But as quickly as I got those independent dates, it started making me feel a lot better. When you think you’re worthless sometimes and you get the respect that I got from the Indy’s and Ring Of Honor, that’s a big deal.It boosts your confidence, it boosts your ego a little bit. Which you need. And apparently somebody was watching. Everything you did and it’s gonna take off. It is worrisome, you’re gonna worry about it. But at the end of the day, it ain’t gonna do you any good. Just go up there and do your best and do what you can and that’s it.”

On if he thinks WWE would change him if he went to their company: “I do know that they like to make their own characters. But I’m ok with that. If I had the opportunity to go there, I may take that opportunity. I mean it all depends on certain things obviously but if they were willing to give me the opportunity, I would make the best of it. I’m not saying that I would go there, I’m definitely not saying that I wouldn’t. It all depends on what they are offering. That’s the bottom line.”

On the top of the card in WWE being more wrestler orientated than their “characters”: “True. But there are little things that have happened that have gotten that character over; that wrestler over. Despite what we may think, there is a bearded guy who once he starts saying yes, people go crazy for it. And I think it’s awesome. Good for him, man. I am so proud that he is doing so well because I know that guy works really hard. And of course I’m talking about Daniel Bryan or American Dragon or whatever you want to call him. But that’s a good thing and like I said it’s all about opportunity.”

On if it frustrates him that TNA doesn’t properly utilize the talent they have: “Well, I mean that is frustrating because you know they are more than capable of having those kinds of matches (5 star) like Samoa Joe and Christopher Daniels. But at the same token I look at what Chris and Frankie (Kazarian) are doing as far as this tag team and I think it’s hilarious the stuff that they’ve come up with. You know it is entertainment. And for those who want a little bit of everything, those two guys can definitely give that, there’s no doubt. But at the same time they can give amazing matches. And it’s all who you put them in there with. You can only do so much with certain people in the ring. I don’t want to bash anybody because that’s not what it’s about. I’m just saying that it’s who you are in there with sometimes that you are able to have these five star matches. But at the same time you gotta tell a story and have guys who are able, are capable of having five star matches. It’s difficult to find that happy medium. Joe I think deserves to be in a huge storyline because every time he goes out to the ring somebody yells, all we hear is ‘Joe’s gonna kill you’ yet he never gets to do it anymore. It’s hard, man. It’s just–it stinks sometimes and I don’t know whether going with a storyline’s better. It’s one of those things–it’s the same thing that Ring Of Honor does is that they do a good job of wrestling. Because that’s what they do best. TNA definitely has the wrestlers that can gather and do amazing things. But they have to give them that opportunity.”

On whether Dixie Carter should focus on her character or running TNA: “I don’t know. I don’t know what her position in the company is anymore. I’m not really sure if she’s dealing with the money or dealing with the storyline, I’m not exactly sure what she’s dealing with. When I was in negotiations, it wasn’t with Dixie. So I’m not sure who’s in charge when it comes to that. And as far as her character goes, if she is doing such a terrible job then why is she getting booed so much? Is she getting booed because she’s doing a terrible job or is she getting booed because people honestly don’t like her character? It’s hard to say, it’s hard to know.”

On Jeff Jarrett’s TNA departure: “Real shocking. To see the man that help start the company and the man that I know loves that place. And wants to see that company do well. For him to say you know what? I’m done with this. I can’t do anything else. It’s surprising. Because I just figured that if it was gonna go down, the captain would go down with his ship. But it’s honestly–it makes you think. If Jeff Jarrett is willing to depart with the company then you know what’s going on out there? How frustrated are they up there? It’s hard to say, man but it was very surprising to see Jeff Jarrett leave.”

  • Former WWE Official Talks Booking WMXXX, WWE Rushing Title Unification

    6

Former WWE Official Wes Adams, has published a new column at PWMania.com, going in-depth and talks about booking WWE WrestleMania XXX, including matches for John Cena, Brock Lesnar, The Shield among others. Adams also talks on how the WWE title unification on a December “B” PPV show was rushed. Here is an excerpt from his article:

“From what I’ve read and gathered, the unification of the two world championships was rushed and lackluster. Wrestlemania XXX could and should have been the time for the unification, not a December “B” PPV show. The time to unify them was long overdue though. The brand extension has been over and done with for a while, so there is no reason for two “world” championships. The World Heavyweight Championship has been presented in such a terrible manner the past few years, that is has ceased to have any real meaning. It hasn’t been featured in the closing match of WrestleMania since 2008, and has been devalued by short title reigns, champions losing, and horrible booking of the person holding it.”

“If Cena is going to be in the main event again, at WrestleMania, which is in jeopardy now that Batista is returning, then let it be with someone else. If Orton is going to be the Authority’s “Chosen One”, then let’s have a FRESH match with another individual. There is no way that Orton vs. Cena in their 100th PPV match is going to be an earth shattering, money making pay-per-view match. And what happens to the winner of the Royal Rumble this year? If a title match is going to be set, what does the Rumble winner do? That in itself makes me feel like WWE rushed the title unification match, and had it at a random ppv, much like they did with the WWF/WCW Unification match. Mania usually sells itself, but will this match be enough for the casual fan to want to open their wallet? We’ll see. So for the second year in a row, there are more questions than answers heading into the Mania main event season.”

  • TNA Impact Not Scheduled To Return To Universal Orlando

    26

File this one under “NOT Best For Business” – TNA is being forced to take Impact Wrestling back on the road because all of the sound stages at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida are booked up through the end of 2014.

Back in November, TNA announced that Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida would once again be the home of Impact Wrestling, the company’s new training center and the hub of their new Impact 365 social media campaign. They taped several shows at a new Universal Studios sound stage in December and are scheduled to tape the next batch of Impact shows later this month from Huntsville, Alabama (including the live “Genesis” special) before heading to the UK for another round of tapings. It was expected that they’d be returning to Orlando after the UK tour.

This is going to result in TNA incurring very high costs until they can find a new regular venue for their flagship show.

Ken Shamrock Interview: How He Would Beat Brock Lesnar In MMA & More

    10

    WGD Weekly with Ken Shamrock
    Hosts: Steve & The Scum
    Interview available at Facebook.com/WGDWeekly

Ken on his feelings of MMA and how his legacy is viewed today: “I helped create this sport; it’s almost like a child of mine. Just like many of the other guys who were in it in the beginning they cherish it and nurture it also. So I understand the comments that were made by some people who feel they don’t get the respect they deserve because they have been there in the beginning.”

Ken on his childhood and how he got started in MMA/Wrestling: “Well I started in juvenile hall I ended up getting stabbed at the age of 10, went back and forth in placements then got adopted by my father at the age of 12 who was Bob Shamrock who passed away 10 years ago. He was the one who drove me to become the man I am today. He instilled in me my passion …I was able to become a world champion because of the desire and the non-quit that he instilled in me.”

Ken feelings on Brock Lesnar and how he would go about facing him in the octagon: “I felt that when Brock Lesnar was brought into the UFC he was brought in wrong. I thought if they would have given him time to nurture and dealing with the media and onslaught of main event fights. I thought that some of the matches that he did lose he would’ve lost if he was able to go against guys at his level. The way I would attack is taking him into the later rounds. I think that he has two left feet when it comes to his stand up. He really does have real good technique, he’s slow…make him use a lot of energy with his punches and keep moving.”

Ken Shamrock also discuss his thoughts on refereeing  the WrestleMania 13 match (Bret vs. Austin), the prank that Owen Hart pulled on him, feelings on Dana White, who’s ankle he shattered in the UFC during a fight and much more in this exclusive 2hr interview.

Former ECW & Intercontinental champion Ezekiel Jackson announced on Instagram that he’s undergoing another surgery this weekend:

    9c3e7694747a11e3bab012d2d5e6e25c 8

“This is what I look like one day before surgery, and was limited in what I did in the gym… what will I look like when I’m completely healthy? Being HOME and HEALTHY for 10 months became a problem because all I did was weight train. I tried a few different methods and techniques which I’ve adopted to create something extremely special (more on that coming #soon… stay tuned)…. I trained and trained and trained and got strong as an ox because of increased flexibility, healthier joints and and healthier muscles due to smarter training, stretching and warming up which I owe all to joe defranco @DeFrancosGym (really good dude and extremely knowledgeable). It didn’t matter how much stretching and warming up I did my body found a way to slow me down. I’ve developed 2 hernias which has SLOWED my training down for the last 6 to 8 weeks. I am finally having surgery today my 3rd (procedure, mountain, stumbling block, distraction) in 4 years. BUT in 2 weeks, I’ll be starting over and #SOON I will be back better than ever. #prayformyjourney #trulyblessed #freakofnature #freak #Zfreak #beastmode #damyth #WWE #RAW #smackdown #superstars #MainEvent”

Dean Ambrose Talks About Being Compared To Roddy Piper

    71

WWE United States Champion Dean Ambrose recently spoke to The Fairfax Times about being compared to WWE Hall of Famer “Rowdy” Roddy Piper:

“I don’t see how you could not take that as a compliment,” Ambrose said. “He was a legend and a hall of famer. He was a guy who stirred the pot and drew a good amount of money. I feel like I haven’t really done anything yet. Not that I’m holding back — right now I’m just working as hard as I can in the role that I’m in. I still feel like I have a LOT of stuff in my back pocket that when the opportunity strikes … there’s a lot more to me than people have seen yet.”

He also talked about the impact The Shield has had in WWE since their debut, calling them the “backbone” of the company:

“We feel like we’re the backbone of the company,” he said. “We go out there every night and show off the work ethic that rubs off on everybody we work with. We go out there every night to have the best national show — whether it’s one or two matches, you got to work twice or whatever it is — we never take a night off.”

Antonio Cesaro Talks About Working With Punk, Bryan & Rollins On The Indy Scene, Chris Hero’s Release

    14

Here are some highlights of what Antonio Cesaro said to the Baltimore Sun during a recent interview:

2013: “Well, I started the year as the United States champion, and now I am not the United States champion. But I’d say I’m part of the most entertaining group in the WWE, and the best tag team right now, the Real Americans.”

Working with CM Punk, Seth Rollins and Daniel Bryan on the Independent Scene: “We’ve been on the road with each other for a long time. I’ve been with guys like CM Punk, Seth Rollins and Daniel Bryan for almost 10 years now. It’s definitely a bond because we all know where we came from. We know we performed in front of 20 or 30 people in some old, rusty building, and now we’re performing on the biggest stage. There’s definitely a pride in that. There’s definitely a bond in it as well.”

Chris Hero’s Release: “It certainly was disappointing. When we signed with this company, we both knew what we were getting into. We both made each other a promise that we would work as hard as possible, whether it’s as a team or singles competitors. I know he’ll wind up on his feet, and he probably already is, and he’ll continue wrestling all over the world.”

Mick Foley Blogs About Daniel Bryan Joining The Wyatt Family

    4

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley has published a blog on Facebook talking about Daniel Bryan joining the Wyatt Family. Here’s an excerpt:

“For the record, I am a huge daniel Bryan fan. I thought a Bryan win would have been best for business at “Hell in a Cell”. I think Bryan winning the Royal Rumble, and the potential of 75,000 strong in New Orleans chanting “YES” at the conclusion of Wrestlemania – providing an image for the ages….and sending people home HAPPY – will be what’s best for business in April. But could this recent turn of events with Bray Wyatt be what’s best for business now?

    It could be.

Personally, I see the WWE World heavyweight Championship in Daniel Bryan’s future. But in the meantime, he has a chance to do something almost as important and prestigious; he has a chance to help MAKE somebody.

Last month, I mentioned that Bray Wyatt (yeah, I know I called him Way Bryatt on the TLC PPV) had that “IT” thing – those tricky two letters that can spell the difference betweeen a talented performer and a star, between an asset to the company and a main eventer. But even a peformer with that “IT” factor needs something else to get them there – a bridge of sorts to get lead them on that next step of the journey. Every performer in our business needs that intense personal issue, that rivalry, that FEUD that truly puts them on the main event map.”

    WWE RAW (12/30)

Alright everyone, I’ve been sitting on writing this article to give all of us enough time to digest what we saw on Monday. I didn’t want to make a knee jerk reaction to what I saw. So hopefully here is my calm observation.

Daniel Bryan Takes On Luke Harper - YES!
Daniel Bryan Takes On Luke Harper – YES!

Daniel Bryan Joins The Wyatts: Daniel Bryan is an incredible wrestler, he’s got a likable personality, and he’s good on the mic. Shawn Michaels definitely taught him well, but Bryan has that extra ingredient needed to make a star, that unteachable “it” factor. You either have it, or you don’t. Bryan has it, and it has developed over the years to something a massive audience can get behind. We are in in a time where WWE has failed to match the caliber star power and top new talents of the decades before it. So partly due to John Cena’s injury Daniel Bryan is given the ball. The crowds love him, and are behind him. Daniel Bryan headlines Summer Slam with Cena, followed by the next 3 Pay-Per-Views with Orton. The Pay-Per-View buy rates  were down from the previous year. It shouldn’t rest squarely on Bryan’s shoulders, there is an incredible short shelf on top stars, with practically all of them on John Cena’s level either retired or part time. Look at Survivor Series, headlined by Big Show vs Randy Orton, drawing one if not the lowest Survivor Series buy rates in the PPV’s history. I could argue that Daniel Bryan in the main event SAVED the prior three pay-per-views from a similar dismal buy rate.

Erick Rowan vs Daniel Bryan - YES!
Erick Rowan vs Daniel Bryan – YES!

Nonetheless, back down Daniel Bryan goes on the card, he becomes the scapegoat, pun intended! Bryan’s been in a feud with the Wyatts  since the end of October. My anger and frustration has clouded my appreciation for the Wyatts, and this story line. So let me look at it just from the perspective of the story line alone. The Wyatts have a great persona, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan can hang with the likes of just about anyone in the ring. I feel Bray Wyatt is the weakest wrestler out of the group, but wrestling isn’t the most important talent needed for this, Bray could easily fit in a horror movie, he looks the part and is competent enough. So after two months of mostly Daniel Bryan getting the short end of the stick, on this past Monday’s Raw Bryan is given a chance to go one on one with Bray Wyatt. All Bryan must do is defeat Luke Harper and Derrek Rowen.

Daniel Bryan Joins the Wyatt Family. YES!
Daniel Bryan Joins the Wyatt Family. YES!

After the two matches Bray comes in the ring, the match starts, Erick and Luke join in on the attack. Bray tells Bryan he’s afraid this is where their story ends. He says he has no mercy left to give. He says this is his fault. Bryan says you’re right, you were right all along and joins the Wyatts. (View Full Details here)  So within the story line itself. I’m okay with this, in fact I’m totally fine with this scenario, provided Daniel Bryan is out of this “spell” by The Royal Rumble. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, in this day in age, with people wanting instant gratification, binge-watching full seasons of TV shows in a sitting, I can’t wait 16 weeks for WrestleMania XXX for Daniel Bryan to come out of his spell. Doing so may inflict permanent damage on his popularity. So if Daniel Bryan is “following the buzzards” for four weeks, I’m on board. YES!

CM Punk takes on Seth Rollins on an "Off Night" - NO!
CM Punk takes on Seth Rollins on an “Off Night” – NO!

CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins: Everyone has an off night,  Seth Rollins and CM Punk didn’t work. there were a few botches, CM Punk tried to cover by turning a move off the ropes into a small package, but it was sloppy. I would imagine most of the heat goes on Seth Rollins, but it takes two to tango. CM Punk on Twitter knew it was a stinker NO!

Backstage Update On Concern In WWE Over Lesnar vs. Taker At WMXXX

    50

As previously reported, WWE was originally planning on a Brock Lesnar vs. Big Show match at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. The idea came about when Show was feuding with The Authority.

Apparently the plan was for Big Show to go through Randy Orton and The Authority, although he would never win the title, yet he would come out of the program as a solid main eventer. This would set up Show looking strong, making Lesnar look strong for a match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXX when he beat Show at the Rumble.

Speaking of Taker vs. Lesnar, there appears to be some concern over a few different issues. One is the physical style that Lesnar has in recent years. Lesnar’s rough style, mixed with the bad physical shape Taker is in, is causing some concern.

Another issue is that many, if not all of Taker’s opponents the last several years have secretly worked out their match with extensive practice before it actually took place. There is some concern within WWE as to whether or not Lesnar would be willing to put in that amount of time preparing for the match.

WWE officials are also discussing bringing in “Rowdy” Roddy Piper for WrestleMania XXX. Ideas involving Piper include Cena and Hogan against Piper and another heel in a tag-team match, Hogan and Piper together against The Real Americans, or a “Legends Match” featuring Hogan vs. Piper one-on-one.

Backstage News On Why HHH Isn’t Signing Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards

    28

According to reports, Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards will not be returning at the next set of WWE NXT television tapings, nor will they be offered a contract by WWE.

Apparently Triple H didn’t want to sign the two after their recent WWE tryout due to their size. The feeling within WWE right now is that the company has enough talent that isn’t very big, but can “go” in the ring. Because of this mindset, the company was looking for guys who fit a different description in the most recent tryout camp.

TNA Interested In Signing Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards

A lot of people reportedly went to bat for Richards and Edwards, saying that not only should WWE sign them, but should immediately push them to the main roster. Ultimately, WWE decided not to sign the two.
