Former Heavyweight Boxing Champion Riddick Bowe to make wrestling debut for UK based Preston City Wrestling

The UK based wrestling promotion Preston City Wrestling announced today that former Undisputed World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Riddick Bowe will make his wrestling debut for PCW in 2014. Company officials have exchanged contracts with Mr Bowe’s representatives for a bout to take place on 1st March 2014. Preston City Wrestling (PCW) officials expect this to raise the company’s profile and widen its fan base by appealing to both boxing and wrestling audiences. In addition to wrestling on the 1st March 2014 Mr Bowe will also appear 28th February 2014 for a final contract signing, with his soon to be announced opponent.

PCW owner Steven Fludder said: “This is an exciting coup for Preston City Wrestling. Riddick Bowe is one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time and has been training hard to make the transition to the wrestling ring”

Last month the 6ft 5in star said: “I want to be first heavyweight boxing champion and heavyweight wrestling champion. I have trained hard with those bumps.”

Brian Elliot Fighting Sprit Magazine Editor: “Riddick Bowe was a household name for his accomplishments in boxing, and for him to be making his pro wrestling debut for Preston City Wrestling says a lot about how that company is perceived by the international talent who’ve performed there,” said Brian Elliott, the editor of Fighting Spirit Magazine. “PCW has taken the best bits of British wrestling and updated them for a young audience that is influenced by WWE. They are unquestionably the most forward-thinking group in England, and the signing of Riddick Bowe is a testament to that.”

About Preston City Wrestling: Established in June 2011 in Preston, Lancashire, Preston City Wrestling is the fastest rising company in the UK, using the very best in wrestlers in the UK today. In PCW you can regularly see big name international stars who have wrestled for US based promotions WWE, TNA and ROH. Preston City Wrestling is also the first company in England to film all of their shows in a High Definition format. They have released a Blu Ray in 3D and are the first independent wrestling company in the world to do so. The live shows continue to grow and sell out in advance and they have the biggest social network following in the UK. For more information, please visit www.PrestonCityWrestling.com.

About Riddick Bowe: Riddick Lamont Bowe (born August 10, 1967, Brooklyn, New York City) is a former two-time World Heavyweight boxing champion, first winning the WBA, WBC and IBF titles in 1992, becoming undisputed heavyweight champion. Bowe’s second reign as heavyweight champion was in 1995 when he won the WBO title. Bowe retired in 1996 but made a return to the ring in 2004. Riddick Bowe, 6ft 5in, became the first fighter to defeat Evander Holyfield when he beat him in 1992 for the world heavyweight title. He then became the first fighter to knock Holyfield out, when he beat him in their rubber match in 1995. Bowe’s professional boxing record stands at 43-1-0 (1 NC) with 33 KO’s. He has defeated every opponent he has fought except Buster Mathis, Jr. (their bout ended as a no-contest).

Possible Spoiler On Tag-Team Turmoil Match At Night Of Champions Kickoff Show

7

Take this for what it’s worth, the Prime Time Players worked against Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns on both WWE live events this weekend.

Generally, WWE likes guys who are wrestling on big shows, such as pay-per-views, to work out their matches on the non-televised live events leading up to the pay-per-view show. Whether or not this is any indication as to who will win the Tag-Team Turmoil match during the Night Of Champions Kickoff show, which the Prime Time Players are a part of, remains to be seen.

WWE House Show Results (9/14): Saginaw, Michigan

1

The following are results from the WWE live event in Saginaw, Michigan. The event was held on Saturday, September 14, 2013.

-Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns defeated The Prime Time Players to retain the WWE Tag-Team Championships.

-Zack Ryder defeated Curt Hawkins via Pinfall.

-Natalya defeated Brie Bella via Submission after applying The Sharpshooter.

-Tyson Kidd defeated Jack Swagger. Swagger dominated the majority of the match, but Kidd pulled the victory out of nowhere at the end.

–Intermission–

-Rob Van Dam defeated Heath Slater. RVD got an enormous pop from the crowd coming out, as he was in his home-state of Michigan. Surprisingly, Slater dominated most of the match. In the end, Van Dam picked up the pinfall victory after hitting Slater with his Five-Star Frogsplash finishing move.

-Ryback defeated Santino Marella via Pinfall. Santino got a great reaction from the crowd. Another one of the bigger pops of the evening. Ryback picked up the win after hitting Santino with his Shellshock finisher.

-The Miz defeated Fandango via Submission after applying his Figure Four Leglock finishing move.

-Daniel Bryan defeated Dean Ambrose via Disqualification. Big Show was forced to watch the match at ringside. The DQ came when the other members of The Shield interfered, which led to Big Show and Rob Van Dam making the save for Bryan. Ambrose loses via DQ, but retains his WWE United States Championship. WWE House Show Results (9/14): London, Ontario, Canada

0

The following are results from the WWE live event in London, Ontario, Canada. The event was held on Saturday, September 14, 2013.

-Dolph Ziggler won a Battle Royal for a shot at Alberto Del Rio and the World Heavyweight Championship later in the show.

-The Funkadactyls defeated AJ Lee & Layla. The fans voted for a Dance Contest, but that turned into a Divas tag-team match, which the Funkadactyls won via a Naomi Cross-Body Block off the top-rope.

-Bo Dallas defeated Justin Gabriel and Hunico to retain the NXT Championship.

-The Wyatt Family defeated The Usos & Kofi Kingston. All three Wyatt Family members competed in this six-man tag match. The finish came when Bray Wyatt hit his Sister Abigail finisher for the pinfall victory.

–Intermission–

-The Great Khali defeated JTG. Match was kept short, thankfully. Pretty much what you would expect here. The finish came when Khali hit his big Chop finisher for the pinfall victory.

-Big E. Langston defeated Damien Sandow. Before the match, Sandow cut an anti-Canada promo to get some heel heat on himself, and to establish Langston as the babyface. The finish came when Langston hit his Big Ending finisher for the pinfall victory.

-Dolph Ziggler defeated Alberto Del Rio via Disqualification in a World Heavyweight Championship match. As noted, Ziggler earned the shot by winning a Battle Royal in the opener. Before the match, Del Rio demanded ring announcer Tony Chimel to introduce him in Spanish. Chimel didn’t know Spanish, so a fan in the front row ended up doing Del Rio’s introduction. The finish came when Del Rio shoved the referee and applied his Cross Armbreaker finisher. That prompted the DQ on Del Rio, giving Ziggler the win, but not the title. After the match, Ziggler hit Del Rio with the Zig-Zag to send the fans home happy.

Austin Aries Speaks On Nearly Retiring, His Character, Kevin Nash Criticism

10

The following are highlights from a recent v2 Wrestling interview with TNA Impact Wrestling star Austin Aries:

On his on-air character: “You know, I find it funny that all the people that follow wrestling, people like yourselves, that they all kind of use the terms babyface and heel, and good guy or bad guy, because I don’t look at life like that and i don’t look at wrestling like that. I’m pretty much who I am, and I’m not everybody’s flavour, and I’m kind of polarising and some people like me and some people don’t. And just like everybody in life, some days I come to work and I’m not in a good mood, and some days I come to work and I’m in a great mood. And i think that’s like everybody. Nobody walks through life as a pure babyface per se or a pure heel, we all have shades of grey, and there’s some days we’re a little better than others, and some days we’re a little more ornery. And I think that I just embody that. I think Austin Aries is pretty consistent when he’s on the screen. I don’t think my attitude has changed a whole lot, other than letting people know that if you wanna cheer me, go right ahead. I’m not gonna stop you. Tell the people who make decisions what you want to see. Tell them who you wanna see on camera and in the ring.”

On his previous TNA run: “Eveybody likes to speculate that me and Austin Starr are somehow related. I always say that that guy never had a tattoo. I’ve watched all of his footage, the guy’s mildly entertaining, never really had a whole lot to sink his teeth into, but i certainly enjoyed him in the Kevin Nash Invitational Battle Royale, I’ll tell you that much.”

On whether Kevin Nash helped or hurt the X Division: “Kevin Nash is a recognisable name, and he was obviously someone they brought in because of who he was. And for him to hang out with us, you’ve got to understand that we had a blast. I had a blast working with Kevin, and if you go back and watch some of the Paparazzi (Productions) skits that I’ve seen, those guys all look like they’re having a great time. I think Kevin was doing what he could to help give the X Division guys at that time a little more personality and bring some of that out, and Kevin’s a great guy to do that because he’s full of personality.”

On his feelings about the wrestling industry: “I’ve been doing this so long now as a job and a profession that – it’s not that I don’t appreciate professional wrestling, but – it’s not something I do in my spare time. I have a lot of other things I enjoy doing, so when I’m done with work I kind of put it away. That doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally catch some other wrestling on television or Youtube, but there was such a long part of my life where I was really consumed with it, where it was all I thought about, and I just think as my career has progressed and as I have matured and the perspective of all this has changed a little bit, now it’s more of a job. That doesn’t mean I don’t love my job and have passion for my job, it’s just not something I spend a lot of my free time doing.”

On meeting the fans: “I think there’s a balance of fan interaction. I think sometimes there can be a little too much interaction. I know when I was a kid, the mystique of wrestlers and stuff was something that was kind of big, and if I got to hang out with them all the time i think that mystique can be lost. You’ve got to be careful not to over-expose and over-saturate (access to the wrestlers), because it loses that specialness.”

On his future: “I still feel that I perform at a level where I’ve got another ten years in me before I even start to think about maybe transitioning into something behind the scenes, but I’ve always been interested in the creative process of wrestling. I think that’s a part of what has helped me excel, because there’s a lot of guys who athletically are as gifted as I am, so I think it’s the mental aspect of the game that has helped me achieve the success that I have.”

On how close he came to retirement in 2011: “I had made the decision (to retire). It was just one of those situations where I didn’t feel that I was getting back what I was putting in. I didn’t want to be a prisoner to the world of wrestling; I didn’t want to be a guy who was trying to hustle every weekend and do a convention. I didn’t want to be Randy The Ram in 10, 20 years. I felt at that point of my life I was ok with transitioning into something else, and I’d stopped taking bookings and had nothing on my schedule, and before that really sunk in I got a call from TNA offering me the opportunity to come down there for an X Division qualifying match. and I figured, well why not take one more pay day, that certainly can’t hurt!”

Paul Heyman Speaks On His “Clients,” Relationship With Brock Lesnar & More

3

The following are highlights from a recent Bleacher Report interview with Paul Heyman:

Bleacher Report: I read a lot about how the manager in wrestling is dead. And yet, here you are in the main event picture on a constant basis. Is it just the fact you are a superlative talent? Or is there still room in the business for a mouthpiece?

Paul Heyman: I never approached this role as the stereotypical wrestling manager. I even avoid that word. I’ve called myself an advocate to disassociate myself from the old term manager that we tried to update 12 years ago as an agent.

Roles constantly have to be redefined in any form of entertainment. Look back at the gangster pics of the 1930s and 1940s and the way James Cagney or Humphrey Bogart would play the part. These roles were redefined in the 1970s by Al Pacino and Rober DeNiro. And again in the 1990s by Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins. And will continue to be redefined.

It’s the same way in WWE. If you approach this role as “the rebirth of the wrestling manager,” it’s bound to fail. You have to take it in a different direction. You have to expose the character to a different approach. Or it’s nostalgia. I try to find ways to redefine the role and expand it into places it has never gone before.

B/R: I’ve thought a lot about your most recent clients. Your role with each has been so different. With Brock you’re a true mouthpiece. With Punk it seemed like a creative partnership like Bobby Heenan and Nick Bockwinkel. And with Curtis Axel, you’re the star and he seems to be getting the rub from you and not vice versa. How much do you think about which Paul Heyman you need to be for each distinct character? Almost like, if you were a real agent, your relationship with each client would be different.

Heyman: Any agent in real life does have different relationships with each and every one of his clients. So, if this were a docu-drama, my relationship with Brock Lesnar would be far different than my relationship with CM Punk. And my relationship with CM Punk would be way different than my relationship with Curtis Axel.

My off-camera friendship with Brock Lesnar has always been different than my off-camera friendship with CM Punk. But I could not tell you that I am closer to either one of them or either one of them is closer to me. It’s just a different relationship.

Like any compelling show on television, what works best in WWE is relationships. What’s the relationship between these two people and how does the conflict manifest itself into box office? Whether it’s Walter White’s relationship with his brother-in-law, or his pupil, or his ex-students, or other drug dealers—it’s the relationships of the central character that make Breaking Bad so compelling. And it’s the diversity of relationships that makes it so compelling.

It’s the key to success for any great television show. So, I will approach a relationship on television with Brock Lesnar far differently than I would the relationship the “Heyman character” would have with CM Punk or anyone else I’m associated with.

Because off-camera relationships would be different, so should on camera ones. If “Heyman” reacts to everyone the same way it gets very old very quick.

B/R: I’m curious about your relationship with Brock. I’ve seen you with him at the UFC. It’s not a gimmick relationship, or an on-camera relationship. How did you come to be friends? You guys are as opposite as they come on the surface. What makes you friends? What brought you together as people?

Heyman: Brock Lesnar and I are as different as any two people can be. What drew us together was the love of the actual performance aspect of what we do. While Brock detests the public eye, the travel and all the often documented things he doesn’t like, Brock loves to be in the ring or the cage. He hates everything else that goes along with it. But the actual act of performing or fighting is something the man truly loves. And I share that passion with him.

And, despite the trappings of fame and fortune, we both have, at our core, a very similar value. Our children and our families are everything to us. And it always goes back to that. Brock and I met at a time when we were both about to experience fatherhood. Here we were on an airplane to the U.K., and we really didn’t know each other, and neither one of us had told anybody. We were keeping it very private.

It just happened to come out that both of us were expectant fathers. And the passion with which he spoke about his dreams for his child who had yet to be born—our first children were daughters born two months apart—the fact that we had such similar dreams for our children was such a commonality between us that we became dear friends based on how similar we were despite being different at the same time.
