Jim Ross Blog: WWE Network, The Need For Heroes & Villains In Wrestling

7

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

WWE Network Launch Rumors: “Excited to read all the rumors regarding the long awaited WWE Network which looks as if it will launch in 2014. It only makes sense to launch the network during WrestleMania season and take advantage of all the media opportunities to sell/promote both the network and WM30.”

Rumored WWE Network Launch Date Revealed

“If that philosophy is accurate, that would have the Network launching in February or March. All that is TBD but it’s been an exhaustive, expensive work in progress for many individuals for a long, long time. If WWE’s PPV’s all move to the Network then the chances of this entity becoming a significant success early increase greatly.”

The Need For Heroes & Villains In Wrestling: “How many great movies or TV shows have you seen or how many books have you read to where there wasn’t a definitive hero or villain. Villains can take many shapes and forms whether it be war, disease, a bully, a coward, a cheat, etc. Great villains in the sports entertainment genre are people that a fan will pay to see them get their ass beat.”

“It’s a simple formula that is timeless.”

“In real life there is a fine line, in many cases, between good and evil. However, TV wrestling isn’t real life. It’s show biz and most every show biz presentation that you or I have ever enjoyed had a hero and a villain component.”

“You would like that wouldn’t you? I think a lot of people would really, really like that and would love to see Maryse back but right now she’s busy dealing with our wedding stuff because she’s the one that has to do it all since I’m not home.”

  • Mysterio Talks About His Return, Forbes Website Writes About The Wyatt Family

    0

    – The official Forbes website has again written about the current Wyatt Family faction in WWE. The following is an excerpt from the article, which was written by Cedric Muhammad:

“The WWE’s political center appeals to Left and Right; urbane and rural; Black and White; aristocrat and poor; entrepreneur and socialist and domestic and foreign – as evidenced by its back-to-back hosting of RAW shows in Manchester, England and Nashville, Tennessee. The only character on scene right now capable of serving as pole to attract, alienate or contrast all of these themes, creeds and constituents is Bray Wyatt.”

You can read the complete article online at Forbes.com.

    – The following is a new tweet from the official Twitter account of WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio. In the tweet, Mysterio thanks fans for being patient in waiting for his WWE return. Mysterio tweeted:

  • WWE Focusing Heavily On RAW & SmackDown, Survivor Series Rumor Killer

    14

Apparently the plan all along was for WWE to book The Shield and The Wyatt Family vs. The Usos, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Goldust and Cody Rhodes as a match on RAW. Since the promotion teased the six-on-six match two weeks ago, the plan was always to come back and hold the match on RAW the following week. At no point did WWE consider putting the match on the Survivor Series pay-per-view, despite previous reports to the contrary.

According to reports, the number one priority in WWE right now is to build up RAW and SmackDown so that the ratings are as strong as possible when the time comes to negotiate the new television rights fees domestically and internationally.

The feeling in the company is that if they can double or triple the rights fees they get for their weekly television shows, that they’re be doing well financially for the next several years. With the recent $8.2 billion television deal that NASCAR secured, several people within WWE feel that they can quadruple their current rights fees.

  • Christopher Daniels Talks Bad Influence, Staying Relevant, TNA, Hulk Hogan & More

    13

TNA star Christopher Daniels recently spoke with Donald Wood of Ring Rust Radio (Audio). Here are some highlights of what the “Fallen Angel” said about:

Being in Bad Influence with Kazarian: “It all came around when Frankie and I decided to tag together about 2 years ago. We saw the writing on the wall about the tag team division in TNA, Beer Money had just split up and the Motor City Machine Guns had been injured, so we figured there wasn’t a whole lot of stuff going on with us in terms of the singles ranks so we decided to give being a tag team a shot and TNA let us do that and got us involved with the whole storyline with AJ Styles. While that was going on, Frankie and I just decided to be ourselves on camera, on the microphone and in the ring. We’re pretty smart-ass/snarky guys backstage, we’re always goofing off and being ridiculous and we just put that out there in front of the camera and we were fortunate enough that the fans responded to it and latched on to it. It’s just really been a matter of going out there and really, in my mind anyway, go out there and even if it’s just a 30 second promo or a backstage vignette or whatever it is, try to do something where it catches peoples’ eye or catches their ear or gets them talking so hopefully at the end of the night, after two hours of Impact Wrestling, one of their high points is ‘Oh Christopher Daniels did this’ or ‘Bad Influence did this’ or ‘Frankie Kazarian did this’ and that’s been the goal. We’ve been trying to be noticed out of the two hour shows and be talked about.”

Reinventing yourself over the years: “Well the wrestling part of it, not to diminish it, but that’s not really the hard part, to be honest. I’ve always tried to, in terms of physical action, keep myself at a certain level and been fortunate enough to work with guys that push me to stay there. But it’s been the in-ring stuff that I’ve been trying to sort of, not capitalize on, but concentrate on a little bit just because that has always been the criticism against me, that I wasn’t a ‘character that people could get behind’ or whatever the case may be. And so I decided to heck with all that and I was just going to have fun and I’ve been fortunate enough that people have caught on to it and have enjoyed it and the more that they enjoy it or the more that there’s a buzz about it, the more I’m going to continue to do that.”

If he is a comedy character: “I don’t really feel like I’m doing comedy, per say. I play off of guys a certain way but I don’t really do a lot of comedy in the ring. I’m just being a smart-ass and people laughing at it but I hope they’re also getting annoyed at it and that they want to see me get my comeuppance in the ring. I’m not trying to be like a Santino character where it’s all comedy all the time or mostly comedy all the time, but I’m still trying to be that smart-ass wise guy that people want to smack around. So I don’t feel like comedy is the basis of my character but if I have to be or I want to be entertaining, especially in things that aren’t in-ring related, it’s easier to get people to enjoy what I’m doing by trying to be entertaining versus being the angry, serious, ‘I’m gonna get you’ guy.”

Influence of Indy Wrestling on his career: “Working in as many different promotions as I did in the past I felt like it helped me become well-rounded and versatile. I wasn’t sure who I was going to wrestle at any given moment, and it was always different guys in different places and different promoters, so it made me become comfortable in myself to the point where it didn’t matter who I wrestled that I could get a good match and make the promoter happy that he had booked me for that particular spot. Part of that is now that I’m with TNA, I’ve become so comfortable with the guys, but at the same time they are the best in our company. Those are the guys that are pushing me to stay in top shape and continue to learn and continue to grow as a wrestler. I think that part of the Indies is being trained on the Indies and making you that versatile and it’s going to get you prepared to step up and get into the national spotlight quicker than staying in one place and wrestling the same people over and over and over again.”

If he is disappointed about TNA possibly leaving the full time road schedule: “It’s not disappointment, we understand the game. We gambled and went out on the road and I think there were positives and negatives to that move. I felt like it definitely freshened up the look of our product and being in front of new fans every night I definitely felt the energy when we were going live and traveling around. But at the same time, we have to do what’s best for the company, and if that means going back to a central location, and taping certain times and getting on the road when we can, then that’s what we need to do. Impact Wrestling is in it for the long haul, they’re not looking to burn out all at once, we’re trying to stay in it long term, and these are the decisions that are made above my head in terms of the long term benefit of our company. So it’s not disappointment it’s more of an interest to see where we go from here, how we’re going to be received when we go back to Orlando for the next set of tapings that we do, and see what happens. It all depends on the product we put out. No matter where we are whether we’re in Orlando or where we are on the road, the most important part is the storylines and the wrestling and are we trying to hook that fan base into continuously coming back and making us a priority to watch.”

Thoughts on playing Curry Man: “It was just different. It was part of being entertaining. Whether I was the Fallen Angel trying to be entertaining by being the serious wrestler out there to win every match and get all the titles or just Curry Man being the guy that was out there having fun and bringing smiles to the fans’ faces, it didn’t matter to me it was a matter of getting people’s attention and trying to get them involved and get them invested in the wrestling. So it didn’t matter to me whether it was the serious guy or the comedy guy, if I was getting people involved and invested in watching wrestling then it’s a win-win situation for both of us.”

If he thinks TNA should try to bring back Hogan: “I think Hogan, with his name, brings something to the table at TNA. The real question is how much is it worth and how much do we pay for that? When you say there could be improvements made, like how much money do we put towards those improvements? And how do you make those improvements? Those are questions that our creative team and the guys that are running the ship are asking themselves every day and I think if it was a set plan I think we would have followed it but it’s something where we have to try different things and do different things. So they’re trying different things and trying to see what sticks and see what profits us best and if they decide that Hulk is profitable, not just monetarily butinvestment-wise, then great but that’s something they are going to decide.”

Booker T Talks About His First WrestleMania Match, Retirement & More

    7

WWE Hall of Famer Booker was recently interviewed by The Miami Herald. Here are some of the highlights of what he said about:

On wrestling his first ever match at Wrestlemania against Edge:

I was really nervous, but a friend of mine told me to take a deep breath and as you make that walk to the ring, just take it all in and feel that moment. went out and did that. It totally calmed me to the point where I realized this was the place I should be in. It was a great feeling

    His Favorite WrestleMania moment:

“What’s a WrestleMania moment? That is for the fans to decide. For me, just being a part of WrestleMania and the week of festivities and the celebration of what we do on the highest level has been the biggest thing to me…My dream was to headline WrestleMania. I wanted to be in the spotlight at WrestleMania. I got a chance to do that. I got a chance to wrestle Triple H in the spotlight [at WrestleMania XIX]. That was my biggest moment there. One thing I never dreamt was, I didn’t dream to win. I didn’t win that night. It would have been sweeter, but life goes on. I became World champion and King Booker. I left a winner.”

Reconciling with brother Stevie Ray at the WWE Hall of Fame:

“It was kind of like burying the hatchet and putting that part of our life behind us and moving forward. WrestleMania weekend was a chance to do that and the Hall of Fame was a way to mend that bridge. Now we are as close as ever. The Hall of Fame ceremony was a once in a lifetime thing we wish we could do every year. It proved to my fans, my peers, that all of the work I put in was worth it. I always wanted to leave my mark and legacy on the business so that one day 50 years I will be remembered. It’s something I strived for many years to attain. My brother and I had not spoken for about five years, maybe six. Maybe a little bit longer. I thought it was time to get past that. Leaving the business the way I started was really important for me. We just talked about doing stuff together. It definitely filled a void that was there for a very long time, thank God.”

    Not wrestling again:

“I really want to get past that stage in my life. I’m trying to put that part of my life behind me. I want to produce and direct. I want to work behind the scenes. Let the guys like CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, The Shield do it and get to that next level. It’s not about me anymore. I understand that first and foremost. Don’t try to fool myself that I can still hang with these guys because they can run circles around me. Over a period of time anyway, I can hold my own for one night. It’s about these guys and the young guys. It’s about WWE and the superstars and looking at WrestleMania, looking at it 15 years from now. Who is going to be that big superstar? What superstars will be created in that time? The evolution of life goes and goes and never stops. You have to be prepared for that. Thank God I have been preparing that for many years.”

Former WWE Star Talks Contemplating Suicide, Being Sober For One Year & More

    2

SESCOOPS.COM reader Phil Johnson sent along the following:

Former ECW Champion and WWE star Justin Credible has published a new online column. Credible talks about being clean and sober for one year, contemplating suicide at one stage, concussions on pro wrestling and more. Here are excerpts from his article:

“On Tuesday I was contacted by Bloomberg news for my opinion on CTEs and concussions in Pro Wrestling. It is a hot button issue in sports, and it’s something that pertains to all of us who step into the squared circle. Personally I have had over a dozen concussions in my 21 year career as a pro wrestler. The concern is what happens to us after the cheers stop, and we are a shell of our former selves.”

“This week is a very special week for me. November 19th marks one year that I have been clean, & sober. I will never forget the days leading up to that decision. I was lost. I was sick, and many times I even contemplated suicide. I’m eternally grateful that I had the WWE to lean on. For years I was trying hard to get clean. I attempted several times to quit “cold turkey”, but if you know anything about addiction, it doesn’t work that way.”

Vickie Guerrero Talks About Her Favorite Eddie Moments, Her Favorite Role In WWE & More

    6

Vickie Guerrero was interviewed by DirecTV this week to promote Sunday’s WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view. Here are some highlights of what she said about:

In your opinion, what makes Survivor Series so special?

“Survivor Series has always kind of been the kick-off to WrestleMania so this is where everything is on the line. It’s important because it brings out the best in all the Superstars and Divas. They really put their heart and dedication into their matches to prove themselves and start making those roads to WrestleMania.”

Do you have any favorite Survivor Series moments?

“I always enjoyed working with Edge and, of course, my husband Eddie. To see Eddie win was always something special to me. He obviously had a lot of opponents but one year at Survivor Series he cheated to win against Kurt Angle. This was during the “Lie, Cheat, Steal” days. That always stuck out in my mind because he was so entertaining in the way he would manipulate his opponents, baiting them into a trap.”

Do you have any other great Eddie memories?

“Gosh, there’s so many. I think my favorite moments were when he worked with Chyna. When he vied for her affection and they “fell in love” and went to prom. I just loved it! He treated me like that in real life, so I related. He was always so fascinating to watch by just being who he was. He really believed in what he did and I think that showed in his work in the ring. His work was just genuine. He cared about it. He had a lot of respect for the fans and gave 100% to make the match everything they wanted it to be when they walked into that arena. They knew Eddie was going to give them his whole heart. It meant a lot to him. I respected him for that.”

During your time in the WWE you’ve been a ringside manager, a girlfriend, RAW general manager, SmackDown general manager, and general cougar-in-charge. Out of all the things you’ve done in WWE, what has your favorite role been?

“General Manager. You get to manipulate the whole roster. That’s a high for me. I may not be on the level of the McMahons or The Authority but to work with them side-by-side, I’m honored. Of course, being the older woman and having these young guys to work with, that’s something that’s always fun. I know the fans enjoy it too because they hate me more when I have that power.”

Live Report From Q&A Session With The Wolfpac From Glasgow, Scotland

PHOTO of The WOLFPAC Together Yesterday (Tuesday)

SEScoops.com reader Gerry Hazel sent in this live report from the Wolfpac (Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Sean Waltman) Q&A session from Glasgow, Scotland earlier this week:

I thought I’d get this out there before the jaded ones ruin it for the hardworking people that put this together.

I attended tonight’s Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Sean Waltman Q & A event in Glasgow, and I had to say, was one of the better events I’ve been to.

Rather than having the Q & A first, there was a set timetable, Posed photo’s with a professional photographer ran from 7:30-8:30, then the main performance started and after that, it was time for meet & greet and autographs.

The photographs were done like something I’d never seen before, a professional photographer, who , after taking your photo with the three gents, had the physical 8×10 photograph ready for you within seconds.

Cost: Photo £20, Signed Photo £30

The main performance, the Q&A part was what I had paid to see. It was great just watching three legends, three best friends, sitting having a great time telling stories. Seeing Scott Hall is such great shape makes it all worth while.

The Q&A was handled well, and while most got their questions in, due to time restraints, a few were left disappointed.

The host who stayed on stage irked me a little, as his job was purely to relay questions, however, continued to put his two cents into each opinion, I didn’t pay to see you, I paid to see the NWO. Other than that small thing, was an enjoyable performance.

After the Q&A, there was the signing portion of the event. Seemed organised enough, prices were a little steep (£15 for 8×10) however, as part of your ticket price, you were included 2 x autographs, so you didn’t have to pay anything if you didn’t want to, and after attending conventions this weekend that Kevin Nash was charging £20 for one signature, this was a welcome chsnge.

All in all, it was a fun night and something I’d do again.

The organisers done a great job, considering the stress they were under (the main organiser of the event, Chris Duke, is currently in hospital after suffering a heart attack the night previous), so I can only asse that there were a lot of reshuffling going on.

I noticed a few people irked and complaining about prices, however, I found them to be reasonable, and a well run event.

Regardless of what you’ve heard, I recommend you give this a go, it’s a once in a life time opportunity after all.

WrestleMania(R) Generates More Than $100 Million for Host City for Second Consecutive Year

WWE (NYSE:WWE) and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie today announced that WrestleMania 29 generated $101.2 million in economic impact for the New Jersey/New York region this past April, according to a study conducted by the Enigma Research Corporation. This marks the second consecutive year that WrestleMania generated more than $100 million in economic impact for its host city.

Over the past six years, WrestleMania has generated more than $400 million in cumulative economic impact for the cities that have hosted the event. WrestleMania 29 also generated approximately $16.5 million in local, state and county taxes.

“On behalf of the great state of New Jersey, we thank all of WWE’s devoted fans who descended on our region from all over the world to be a part of WrestleMania,” said Governor Chris Christie. “The entire week of events helped generate a tremendous boost for our economy, and we look forward to the possibility of MetLife Stadium hosting a future WrestleMania.”

“WrestleMania 29 was a tremendous success for WWE and New York City,” said George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Company. “Fans took advantage of all that our region has to offer, including the best hotels, restaurants, retailers, cultural and entertainment options in the world. We are grateful to WWE for its continued support of our City.”

“We are thrilled that WrestleMania created a substantial benefit on both sides of the Hudson, and we thank Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Christie for their incredible partnership and hospitality,” said John P. Saboor, Executive Vice President, Special Events, WWE. “We are also forever grateful to our friends at the New York Giants and New York Jets, as well as all of our regional public and private sector partners that worked tirelessly to welcome our fans from around the world. We now turn our attention to New Orleans for our milestone WrestleMania 30 celebration.”

A capacity crowd of 80,676 fans from all 50 states and 34 countries attended WWE’s pop-culture extravaganza this past April, making it the highest grossing entertainment event at MetLife Stadium. Key highlights from the study include:

    – $101.2 million of direct, indirect and induced impact derived from spending by non-locals visiting specifically for WrestleMania 29.

    – 54% of fans that attended WrestleMania were from outside the New York/New Jersey area and stayed an average of four nights.

    – The economic impact derived from WrestleMania Week was equal to the creation of 943 full-time jobs for the area.

    – $5.2 million was spent by non-locals at New Jersey and New York restaurants.

Next year, WrestleMania 30 will take place Sunday, April 6 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Tickets are currently on sale. The event will be broadcast on pay-per-view, and viewed in more than 100 countries.
