WWE Celebrates The Anniversary Of Battle Kat’s Debut, ESPN Covers Rey Mysterio’s Masks, Today’s Birthdays

3

– To promote Battleground on October 6 at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York, the official YouTube account of WWE is celebrating the 23rd anniversary of Battle Kat (real name Dean Peters), a wrestler who donned a cat mask and utilized his gymnastics background to emphasize his “cat-like” agility. On September 19, 1990 at a WWF Wrestling Challenge taping in Flint, Michigan, Battle Kat won his televised debut match over enhancement talent regular Bob Bradley.

The masked grappler’s stint with the sports-entertainment company would be short-lived as he was gone by the end of the year, with his final television appearance resulting in a loss to the massive Barbarian. He later resurfaced unmasked in World Championship Wrestling as Brady Boone, where he appeared as a wrestler and later a referee. On December 15, 1998, while driving home to Tampa, Florida from a WCW television taping in Orlando, Florida, Peters died in an automobile accident.

– This week’s issue of ESPN The Magazine featuring Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton on the cover has an article on the many masks of Rey Mysterio.

– Today’s birthdays include former WWE and WCW wrestler Ricky Morton (57), former WCW announcer Scott Hudson (49), and journeywoman Ivelisse Velez (25).

Jerry Jarrett Says TNA Focusing On Former WWE Talents Is A Mistake, Talks Dixie Carter & TNA’s Future

24

Inside The Ropes have launched a VIP service this week and one of their new shows is Lets Get Creative where they talk to wrestling bookers and writers. In the debut show, they spoke to Memphis promoter and TNA Founder, Jerry Jarrett. Here’s a portion of what Jerry had to say about TNA:

On Dixie’s non-wrestling background and how that effects her running a wrestling company: “You’ve got to have an unabiding respect for the business or it’s impossible to be successful. When I was in the wrestling business, me and the wrestling business were intertwined. I ate it, slept it, dreamt it. The wrestling business was my mistress. Dixie saw her first match after she had ownership, I think and I know for a fact she has little regard for the tradition or the history of the business. So, if you don’t know what brought you to the dance, how are you supposed to learn from it and build on it. After all this years, it’s pretty obvious that I’m right. TNA today is as closed to being a non factor in the business as you can get.”

Thoughts on TNA’s focus on ex-WWE talents: “That’s one of the mistakes they made. They can’t seem to get past the fact that when you bring in guys that WWE has let go, fans are going to see them as yesterday’s soup. But of course you have to have someone who knows how to cultivate and create talent otherwise you have no choice but to use whoever’s available, thats named talent. It’s pretty obvious that they don’t have anybody that knows how to create talent. I’m guessing, because I haven’t seen the show in 2-3 years, but I’m sure there’s talent there that could be superstars. Truth, Ron Killings was in TNA and then you saw when he went to WWE how Vince made him into a superstar. In the wrestling business, it’s really not any secret, it’s understanding that if you’re making a movie. what are the ingredients you need? A compelling storyline, a great producer/director and great talent. You mix those ingredients and you get great cinema. But if you take this great star or talent and put him in a stinking movie with a stinking producer director, what do you get? and the wrestling business is a dance between the promoter or booker or writer and the talent. They have to be on the same page and they both have to be good.”

TNA’s future: “I am amazed, because when I was there, Bob Carter called me at least two to three times a week and said “I can’t lose any more money, Jerry” and I said, “You’re needing to talk to your daughter, not to me. She’s running the place.” So I’m amazed that they are in business. I think at this point, it’safe to say that TNA will continue to be subsidized by Bob Carter until he dies. Then I think TNA will go the way of ECW and the territory days.”

Santino Marella On His WWE Return, Cobra Origins, His Goals, New Reality Show

19

The following are highlights from a recent interview with WWE Superstar Santino Marella:

His Battle Arts Academy: “It’s a hybrid place, and what I mean by that is multiple facilities all under one roof. We have a full MMA training center; we have striking and grappling every day at both the recreational levels and the professional levels. We have professional wrestling, strength and conditioning programs. We have a smoothie bar and retail store in the front; we have nutritionists and professional trainers, everything really. And also with kids classes and after school programs, it’s awesome.

It was a little bit delayed, construction was delayed. I wanted to open in July and thought I had ironed out all the bugs, before I went back out on the road with the WWE, but you know everything takes a little longer than it’s supposed to so just as I was scheduled to go back out on the road is when we opened. So, I went home for a couple of days and tried to catch up and just implement our policies and procedures and made sure everyone was following the procedures put in place. So that’s the kind of stuff; I’m in touch when I’m on the road with everybody here, making sure everything is running smoothly and that people are happy.

One thing we did is that we have awesome trainers, so I know that the quality of our coaching and training is going to be top-notch. We have Mr. Ishikawa, from Japan, who came here just to be an instructor here; he’s amazing. We have an awesome women’s kickboxing instructor names Nichelle Laus, who has competed for 13 years and was a police office and mother of 4. We didn’t just get a kettlebell instructor, we got Tony Wallace who is called ‘The King of Kettlebells’. Everybody we have here is just top-notch and the facility is absolutely beautiful; it came out just brand new and it’s well thought out and designed. There’s very little wasted space and it’s bright and open; the reviews that people give when they come in is that they love it. So, we’re happy.”

His goals for the Battle Arts Academy: “We have a lot of goals, that’s one of our things here. We want to produce top fighters, but we also want to have an awesome kids program and what is equally important to us is just recreational level fitness; we want people to come here and get into the best shape of their lives and be the most confident they’ve ever been. We want our high school level athletes to improve their performance with Olympic weight lifting and boot camps and strength and conditioning. We’re doing a reality show here; we want people to break that barrier and have their first ever amateur fight in the octagon and prepare for it. It’s a lot of mental and spiritual training here and what I mean by that is the fighting spirit has to be trained so that when you reach your limit, you reach your plateau, to dig deep and embrace that plateau and that is what it’s all about. That’s when you can go home and say ‘Man I did something today that I couldn’t do before’. You just improve right in from of your own eyes and that’s when you realize anything is possible with super hard work and really good mentor and stuff like that. We do, we have world champions, national champions from all various martial arts and wrestling, giving all this incredible knowledge to the fortunate community; I always say I wish I had this place when I was growing up.

The reality show he has in the works: “The reality show is about MMA; it’s about young fighters who really want to have their first-ever MMA fight, break that barrier in terms of fear and get in the octagon and have their first ever amateur fight. It may be somebody that has a background in karate as a kid, or wrestling but they want to tie it all together and have an MMA fight. So, we’re going to go down to some of the other dojos in the greater Toronto area and find opponents and make this season finale card and talk about the training and the obstacles whether they be mental or physical and ultimately show the fight.

It’s going to be web-based so when you’re watching the show and let’s say Mr. Ishikawa is showing one of his submissions, we’ll have something where; everybody can watch the show, but for a small fee or premium price, you can click here for further detail on this particular submission or ‘click here’ for the breakdown of this particular Olympic wrestling technique. And people can actually learn a lot and be entertained.”

>How did the Cobra come about: “When I attended the original Battle Arts in Japan in 2004, one of the partners there; we were sitting having dinner and beverages after one of our shows and he just said ‘Hey, watch this’ and he did this thing and made his arm into a snake and I’d kind of forgotten about it and years later it popped into my head before my match, and I tried it out and it was born; the crowd liked it immediately.”

His recent return to WWE TV at their Toronto show: “It was awesome actually. The grand opening was actually the night before my return, so it was a really cool weekend. I had the Grand Opening party on Sunday, returning to the WWE on Monday, Smackdown on Tuesday; so it was a cool weekend.

It was awesome. When my music hit and the people erupted it was like ‘Yes!’. It was a very special moment for me and my career. It’s definitely up there in the Top-5 of the coolest moments in my career, that’s for sure.”

His goals in wrestling: “I want to go for the big one this time; World Heavyweight Champion, you know? Alberto Del Rio; he’s a world class champion, I can’t take anything away from him. I have a lot of respect for him actually; I wouldn’t trash talk him by any means, but there’s only one guy at the top and I don’t care if it’s even for just a short time, I just want to be king of the mountain for a little while.”

TNA House Show Results (9/20): El Paso, Texas

4

The following are highlights from the TNA Impact Wrestling live event in El Paso, Texas. The event was held on Friday, September 20, 2013.

-Hernandez defeated Joseph Park. Hernandez was way over with the fans in El Paso, as one would expect. Park kept trying to shake his hand. Hernandez did a lot of high-flying offense for a big guy, as he usually does. In the end, Hernandez picked up the pinfall victory after hitting Park with a top-rope splash. After the match, Hernandez and Park raised each other’s arms. Great opener.

-ODB defeated Lei’D Tapa to retain the TNA Knockouts Championship. Tapa dominated the offense throughout the majority of the match. In the end, ODB managed to get the larger woman up for her finisher, which allowed her to score the 1-2-3 to retain her title.

-Manik defeated Eric Young to retain the TNA X-Division Championship. Young started off the match trying to get Manik to tag him in. Manik, confused, eventually did, and Young attempted to start wrestling the referee. Young then acted like he was the ref and made the referee wrestle Manik. Eventually the two wrestled each other, and Manik hit his gutbuster finisher on Young to score the pin and retain his title. Good comedy match.

-James Storm and Gunner defeated Bad Influence in a Texas Tornado Match to retain the TNA Tag-Team Championships. Before the match, Daniels and Kazarian cut a heel promo. After a really entertaining match, Storm and Gunner hit a double-team move on Kazarian to secure the pinfall victory.

–Intermission–

-Austin Aries defeated Bobby Roode. Roode got good heat from the fans in El Paso. Aries got a pretty big pop. This match was awesome. Lots of good back-and-forth action before Aries reversed a Roode suplex attempt into a rollup for the 1-2-3.

-Bully Ray defeated Samoa Joe to retain the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. Joe probably received the best reaction of the evening. Ray did everything needed to ensure he would get a lot of heat from the crowd, and he did. The finish came when Ray hit Joe with his chain while the referee was down, which led to him pinning Joe to retain his belt. After the match, Ray tried hitting Joe with the belt but Joe came back and cleaned house of the Bully.

Jerry Lawler & Jim Ross Interview: Lawler’s In-Ring Future, JR’s Post-WWE Future

0

The following are highlights from a recent interview with both Jerry “The King” Lawler and Jim Ross:

Jerry Lawler on if he will ever wrestle on a full-time basis following his heart attack: “I don’t wrestle on a full-time schedule anymore, but I still enjoy getting back in there. It’s exercise and it’s fun. I’ve enjoyed doing this my entire career. If I can do it once or twice a week, it’s cool for me. It’s just getting back on the horse again. I don’t worry about it. I don’t sit around and wonder if it’s going to be the same thing that‘s going to happen to me again. I don’t think anything different about it.”

Jim Ross on leaving WWE and pursuing other opportunities: “I’ll be doing just normal type stuff now. After going on the road for a few years, and I loved it, I lived my dream and that’s the greatest thing in the world. But I’m short of the 40-year mark in the business and it made sense to slow down a bit. I’m healthy and there’s other things I’d like to try. It’s a good time to be JR. I’m really happy with the way things worked out.”

Fitness Model Christina Vargas Granted Contract Release From WWE

4

Christina Vargas, a 29-year-old fitness model who signed a developmental contract with WWE in the spring, revealed on her Twitter account that she has parted ways with the sports-entertainment organization after requesting her release—she did not appear on television nor a single live event.

After recovering from vocal cord surgery, the Las Vegas, Nevada-based performer moved to Orlando, Florida, late last month to begin training at the WWE Performance Center. However, she soon came to the conclusion that she would rather pursue her passions in life: fitness and cooking.

She wrote on Instagram on Saturday, “I would like to thank the WWE for the wonderful opportunity that they had given me. I truly respect the sport, the athletes, and the staff for all the hard work and efforts they put in. While experiencing this new venture I realized my true passions were with cooking and fitness. Sometimes in life you need to do something you have never done to realize what is truly meant for you. I do not regret any part of this experience for I met life long friends and learned a lot about myself and what truly makes me happy. I still am a very big fan of the WWE & NXT. I want to thank all of the fans who supported me in my decisions and who keep supporting me in my future journey.”

When asked by Twitter user why she went attempted professional wrestling in the first place, Vargas wrote, “I’m an athlete. Thought I could of done both. I do love the wrestling part I just realized what meant more to me after.”

WWE House Show Results (9/20): Lexington, Kentucky

10

The following are results from the WWE live event in Lexington, Kentucky. The event was held on Friday, September 20, 2013.

-Zack Ryder defeated Damien Sandow via Pinfall. Good opener, crowd popped huge for Ryder. Sandow got a good bit of heat after playing up to the crowd a bit. A lot of fans seemed surprised that Ryder managed to gain the victory over Sandow.

-The Funkadactyls defeated AJ Lee and Layla via Pinfall. This was what it was, Divas tag-team action. Pretty much what you would expect. Cameron and Naomi managed to score the pin to secure the victory in this one.

-Sami Zayn defeated Jack Swagger via Pinfall. A pretty damn good match here from these two. A lot of “Ole'” chants for the former El Generico, who much like the opener, many seemed surprised to get the victory.

-The Wyatt Family defeated The Usos & Kofi Kingston via Pinfall. All three members of The Wyatt Family, Bray Wyatt, Erick Rowan and Luke Harper worked in this one, as it was a six-man tag match. The Wyatt Family was super over with the crowd, and their entrance is pretty cool in person.

-Rob Van Dam defeated Alberto Del Rio via Disqualification. Huge pop for Van Dam from the fans in attendance in Lexington. Del Rio was DQ’d so he lost, but retained his World Heavyweight Championship. Afterwards, Damien Sandow teased cashing in his Money In The Bank briefcase, but ultimately opted against it.

-Ryback defeated Santino Marella via Pinfall. This amounted to what was basically a squash match victory for Ryback. He dominated most of the offense and then picked up the pinfall.

-CM Punk defeated Curtis Axel via Pinfall in a Non-Title match. The WWE Intercontinental Championship was not on the line here, so no one was surprised to see Punk go over clean in this one. Definitely a really good match from these two, with fans popping super-loud for almost anything Punk did the entire match.

-Daniel Bryan defeated Randy Orton via Pinfall. Another really good match, and a great closing contest for what was a pretty damn good show. Along with Punk, Bryan probably received the loudest ovation of the evening. There were obviously a lot of “Yes!” and “No!” chants from the Kentucky fans during certain spots of the match. In the end, Bryan picked up the pinfall to defeat Orton and send the fans home happy.

Booker T Speaks On Interest In Returning To The Ring, Working Royal Rumble & More

8

The following are highlights from a recent interview with WWE Hall Of Famer Booker T:

On whether or not he has interest in a return to the ring: “I wouldn’t call it a comeback (laughs). I’m semi-retired and to work around these schedules that the younger wrestlers and the divas (applies to the female talent, whether as wrestlers, managers or ring announcers) is rough. It’s a young man’s sport. I don’t want to be one of those wrestlers who still holds on to the past, hearing all the roars from the crowd. Royal Rumble is cool, I can do it once a year but to do it every day or week is tough. It’s time for me to step aside.”

On what he misses most now that he’s “semi-retired”: “I don’t miss wrestling, but I miss performing. You know, going out and amazing everybody and feeling that adrenaline rush. I performed in front of soldiers in Iraq in 2003 and the temperature was 40°C. And when you strap on your gear and with the adrenaline pumping, it feel more like 80°C. I’ll miss that. If it’s not for the exhausting travels, I could do wrestling for another 10 more years (laughs).”

More Details On Jim Ross Retiring From WWE

2

According to sources, there were actually rumors of Jim Ross being let go by WWE a few days before it actually took place. On September 10th, the day prior to JR’s release, someone in the WWE book department called an author to inform him that WWE had selected him to write JR’s autobiography.

One source claimed it was odd for WWE to even publicize JR’s retirement due to the fact that most casual viewers never see him on television anyways, and would already assume he had retired.

It was also noted by executives in the company that JR’s release would have never happened as recently as a few years ago, and it’s further proof that Vince McMahon is not worried in the slightest about TNA, in terms of competition.

Regarding JR’s role as the man who worked directly with talents in the WWE NXT developmental system, early speculation is that William Regal will likely take over those duties.
