WWE’s New Championship Belt: How Much It Cost, Who Made It & More

53

WWE.com has an article up detailing the process behind the creation of the new WWE Championship belt. WWE decided around 18 months ago to retire the spinner belt and wanted to create something that was forward-thinking and unlike anything that has been done before.

* Buy The New WWE Championship Belt at WWEShop.comimage 5810028 11305225

WWE Senior Vice President of Creative, Stan Stanski was in charge of the project, and told WWE.com:

“Our idea was never to take a step back or do something predictable or expected. We wanted to evolve the brand and create something that’s never been done before. You don’t always know what a traditional title might represent. We wanted you to know immediately that this was the WWE Championship.”

WWE enlisted Paul Teutul Sr. of Orange County Choppers to create the belt, with help from famed belt maker Dave Millican. Many radical ideas were discussed for the new WWE Championship belt, including a red leather strap, a 3D eagle clutching a WWE logo and even little door hinges on both sites.

Original plans called for the belt to debut at WrestleMania 28, but the design was not ready in time. In the end, more than $50,000 went into the development of the new title.

WWE.com stated in the article that different prototype designs will be posted in the coming weeks, to give an idea of the various ideas WWE had in mind for the final product.

Steve Austin Talks About Jake Roberts At DDP’s Accountability Crib

6

WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin spoke to Seattle’s KISW radio station this week to promote his new DVD action film, The Package. One of the topics discussed was the current condition of Jake “The Snake” Roberts, who has been living with Diamond Dallas Page in Georgia at the “Accountability Crib.”

Here’s what Austin said:

“Dallas Page is one of my best friends, and I talk with DDP all the time. Jake is in there, doing the DDP Yoga, cleaned up, and he’s been sober for I don’t know how long. His mind is back, and Jake is one of the best guys to ever get in the business. I’m a big fan – he’s one of my favorite workers. I don’t know Jake as well as some, but I got my fingers crossed that he continues going down the path that he’s on. I’m real proud of him for getting his life back.”

Chris Jericho Talks About His Current WWE Run, Fozzy, Robot Combat League

11

WWE superstar Chris Jericho was recently interviewed by Donald Wood of Ring Rust Radio and spoke about his WWE return, his love-hate relationship with the fans, how long he plans on sticking around in the WWE, his band Fozzy and his new show Robot Combat League. You can listen to the interview at Blogtalkradio.com.

Here are some highlights from the interview:

Q. You came back at the Royal Rumble. You completely duped everyone; something that doesn’t happen in wrestling much anymore and you got rewarded with that with a huge pop. Talk about that.

A. I don’t know if it I was rewarded with a huge pop. I think it was the fact that people were genuinely surprised and shocked and kind of rewarding themselves. I think it was cool in this day and age that we can actually still surprise people and fool them; especially with the internet all the different ways of social media. And the fact that not one person leaked it, I thought it was a real testament to the company, a real testament to how close I kept it to the vest because not a lot of people knew. There were people in the building that work there for the WWE that didn’t even know until I walked out to the curtain. So, that’s cool to know, because in this day and age, people really have a sense of entitlement, like to play god, like to say they know what’s going on and know everything. When they didn’t know everything, we kind of fooled people it was a really cool moment for me and it could be one of the last times we see something like this because of the reasons I said. That’s one of the reasons the reaction was so huge because people legitimately didn’t expect it. It’s not like, “Well, we knew he was coming”, it was legitimate, like, “Holy Smoke, I can’t believe it”, and that’s why the reaction was what it was.

It was probably one of the best reactions I’ve ever received, besides maybe ’99 when I interrupted The Rock in Chicago, and it was definitely up there as one of top two or three responses I’ve ever received, it was pretty cool.

Q. Since your WWE debut in 1999 there has been a strong contingency of fans that say you were either underutilized, misused or held back. Did you ever share these sentiments that some of the fanbase has or do you disagree wholeheartedly?

A. I guess six-time world champion, nine-time Intercontinental champion, first undisputed champion, I guess all that stuff is being held back; is being a jobber. Then yes, I totally agree with them. I don’t know what you want me to say. I’m Y2J, man. I’ve been doing this for 22 years at the top level. I don’t understand fans sometimes. Six-time world champion, I don’t know how you can deny that. Obviously, at some point I got something right?

Q. You’re a huge star in the WWE and wrestling, but you also have an extremely successful band, Fozzy, how do you balance the two?

A. I guess it’s because I’ve always been kind of a career skitso since I was a kid. I wanted to be in a rock band and I wanted to be a wrestler. I dint know how I was going to do wither one of those, but I just decided that’s what I want to do. You can’t really do both at the same time, you can juggle. That’s one of the reasons I can back for this run is because I had an open time in Fozzy’s tour schedule. Even still, were going to tour with Metallica for a couple weeks on the Soundwave Tour. So I mean there is still a little bit of a balance between one and the other, but now my focus and my schedule is always going to be more Fozzy-based at this time in my career rather than WWE-based. Doesn’t mean I won’t come and go in the WWE for as long as I can, for as long as I feel I can live up to the standards I set. I was actually pleasantly surprised over the last month, I think it has been one of the best months I’ve ever had as far as performances and match quality. At the risk of sounding too egotistical, I’ve had the best match on the show or top-two best matches on the show on every show that I’ve done since I came back, and that was after a six-month layoff. I’m putting in some time. 45 minutes in the rumble, then 18 minutes with CM Punk and 32 minutes in the chamber. It’s been a pretty cool vibe to know I can go in there and perform at the highest level and put in the time I need to put in. As long as I can continue to do that and feel good about myself and my performance, there is no reason I won’t continue to comeback. But, it’s always going to based of Fozzy’s schedule and what I have going on with the band.

WWE Responds To Right-Wing Criticism Over Zeb Colter Character

63

WWE has received some criticism this week from the right-win media, claiming that the new anti-immigrant Zeb Colter character is being done to mock the ultra conservative Tea Party movement.

Brian Flinn, WWE Senior VP of Marketing and Communications, issued the following statement to the Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday addressing the situation:

“WWE has a long history of creating fictional characters that serve as either protagonists or antagonists, no different than other television shows or feature films. To create compelling and relevant content for our audience, it is important to incorporate current events into our storylines.”

“WWE is creating drama centered on a topical subject that has varying points of view to develop a rivalry between two characters,” he adds. “This storyline in no way represents WWE’s political point of view. One should not confuse WWE’s storytelling with what WWE stands for, similar to other entertainment companies such as Warner Bros., Universal Studios or Viacom.”

Here is a report on FOX News, with their pundits debating the Zeb Colter character:

*Spoilers* WWE SmackDown Tapings Results For Friday

24

WWE taped this week’s WWE SmackDownon Tuesday night from the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi. Here are the results, courtesy of Prowrestling.net:

Lillian Garcia, JBL, and Josh Matthews made their entrances.

Alberto Del Rio kicked off the show and said it’s time for WrestleMania. He addressed Jack Swagger’s State of the Union address and said this county was built by hard working immigrants. He said America is great and Swagger is nothing but a Real Jackass.

Del Rio called Swagger out. Randy Orton’s music hit and the place absolutely popped. Orton went to talk in the ring and a Randy chants start. Orton said Swagger robbed him of his shot and he wants to take out his anger on Swagger tonight. Orton asked Del Rio to step aside for tonight.

Booker T came out and said his plan tonight is champion vs champion – Del Rio vs. Wade Barrett. Booker granted Orton’s wish by booking him in a match against Swagger.

Sheamus was shown backstage…

1. Sheamus beat Damien Sandow. A pretty decent back and forth match. Sheamus won with the Brogue Kick.
The announcement for WrestleMania 30 being held in New Orleans was shown. The crowd was pretty pumped up since it’s only an hour away.

2. Kaitlyn and Layla beat Tamina and Aksana. Kaitly won with a hard spear on Tamina.

3. Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter) beat Randy Orton. Swagger has gotten rid of all the red white and blue in his entrance. It’s kinda awkward because Zeb appealed to the rednecks here. I can see some real heat coming in places elsewhere. A good match with Orton. Swagger is bringing a new intensity to his matches and is finally looks like he belongs. In the end, Zeb distracted Orton, who was punched by Swagger. Swagger rolled up Orton for the win.

4. The Miz defeated Cody Rhodes. Miz won with a nice reversal into the figure four. I think he’s finally getting the move down. Dusty should have taught Cody how to get out of it.

5. Alberto Del Rio (w/Ricardo Rodriguez) beat Wade Barrett. Following the ring entrances, Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter came out and stood on the ramp to watch. It was the best match of the night. Del Rio won by making Barrett tap to the Cross Arm Breaker. The taping ended with Del Rio standing in the ring jawing to Swagger with the WrestleMania logo in the back.

3. CM Punk
4. Alberto Del Rio
5. Mark Henry
6. Jack Swagger

Indy Star RJ Brewer Talks About Zeb Colter Immitating His Gimmick

26

RJ Brewer, an Independent wrestler with Lucha Libre USA that has an anti-immigrant gimmick, has responded to fans claiming that WWE’s new Zeb Colter character is a rip off of him. Brewer’s posted the following message on his Facebook page today responding to that:

“This will be the only time I respond to the questions I have received regarding WWE “stealing my stuff.” I have been wrestling for Lucha Libre USA for almost 3 years and have been using that platform to speak against illegal immigration from the start. I have been featured on CNN, Fox News, The Geraldo Rivera Morning Show, front page of the LA Times, front page of the BBC, and most recently, ABC… Nightline.”

“I knew it was only a matter of time before someone else took advantage of my press and success. For me to complain would say I am against capitalism, and that is not true in the least. The reason I have done what I have done is because this is not some silly wrestling storyline, this is real. My feelings are magnified for the camera and the live audience, but what I say comes from the bottom of my heart. This is why I was invited to the Sheriff Joe Arpaio walk, and asked to be a guest speaker at Rusell Pearce’s (author of SB 1070) fundraiser.”

“They say the most sincere form of flattery is imitation. I say imitation is suicide, because to try to be what someone else really is, is only killing who you are. Our audience is Latino, our wrestlers are Latino and that is why RJ Brewer is so effective. I don’t need a mouthpiece. I don’t need a machine behind me. I don’t need human growth hormone and/or to be protected by a phony drug test only to be thrown out like yesterday’s garbage when I am finished. RJ Brewer will always be 100% real, no matter how hard someone tries to diminish that.”

“All I need are my views and a platform to spread them, and so far, that has worked just fine. Lucha Libre USA goes on tour this spring, stay tuned for dates and stay tuned for a documentary to be filmed about “Latin America’s Favorite Enemy.” Last year, an average of 3000 fans came out each night to watch us, and this year should be even better. Thank you.”

Stone Cold Believes Window Is Closed On “Tough Enough”, Bruno Sammartino On Stan Hansen Breaking His Neck

6

– Promoting his latest movie The Package, which was released on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin was asked about the status of Tough Enough.

“I think that window is closed,” remarked Austin. He also added that WWE “dropped the ball with Tough Enough.”

The audio interview is available at KISW.com.

– On April 26, 1976, Bruno Sammartino suffered a neck fracture in a match against Stan Hansen at Madison Square Garden, when Hansen improperly executed a body slam and dropped Sammartino on his head. Despite doctors’ orders, Sammartino insisted on flying home to Pittsburgh that night. 1Wrestling.com has released vintage audio of Sammartino detailing the incident to Bill Apter at a hospital the week after and what the prognosis for his future was back then.

Jim Ross Weighs In On Zeb Colter’s Controversial Remarks, The New WWE Championship, Mark Henry

12

Jim Ross has published his latest blog on Jrsbarbq.com, where he weighs in on Dutch Mantel’s xenophobic heel character, Zeb Colter.

Ross writes, “Getting lots of Tweets regarding Zeb Colter’s politically based comments and many feel that the comments are untimely. Isn’t that what wrestling villains do, make inflammatory, controversial comments that strike a nerve with the audience? Same type of comments are made daily on a variety of news outlets so I’d suggest to the most vocal of critics to simply, “Lighten Up Francis.” Zeb’s TV persona is that of a political zealot who has controversial opinions. Zeb…if that is his real name.”

Ross also offered his thoughts on Mark Henry following his return from injury: “Mark Henry is on a roll since returning a few weeks ago from an extended absence due to injury. Henry has a ‘bad attitude’ and I find him one of the more compelling, intimidating villains in WWE.”

During Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s WWE Championship celebration on Raw Monday, The Rock revealed a brand-new WWE Championship. On the subject, Ross writes, “The Rock unveiled the newly designed WWE Title of which has been a topical, Twitter subject @JRsBBQ. I’ve stated many times in the past, I’m not a title belt aficionado and have never invested much of my time on the design of any championship. I think classy, simple is better but, again, I won’t lose any sleep over how a championship belt looks. Personalized Championship tittles are simply what they are. I always thought the old WCW Title belt was WAY too big as was the UWF Title back in the day while I still think that the Lou Thesz version of the NWA Title along with the Race, Funk, Brisco NWA title belt was classy and cool. But again, I’m not your best source for an opinion on the Spinner Title or Rock’s Brahma Bull Title. I’d say the same thing re: the Smoking Skull title as well in case you’re wondering.”

Ross also offered his thoughts on Raw, Jack Swagger, The Shield and more. The full post is available here.
