Jim Ross Blog: His 1996 Pipebomb Promo, Cruiserweights In WWE & More

10

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog at JRsBarBQ.com with his thoughts on Saturday night’s big UFC fight between George St. Pierre and Nick Diaz. Here are some of the wrestling-related highlights from this entry:

Cruiserweights in WWE: Several asking about if I think that the Cruiserweight division will be returning to WWE any time soon. Answer is that I have no idea but if forced to speculate I’d give that one a no. many wrestlers feel that being labeled a Cruiserweight hampers there professional growth. Plus, it’s another title to attempt to establish which can be challenging.

Ric Flair: Got a nice call this morning from @RicFlairNatrBoy who was in great spirits and talking about how proud he was of his son Reid who is in Japan wrestling for All Japan Pro Wrestling and is apparently learning a great deal and doing well. I’d suggest Reid stay in Japan for a year or longer and really refine his game before attempting to make his mark in the USA. Tough last name to have and even tougher to step away from the shadow of one of the most influential and famous fathers in the history of the business. I’m looking forward to catching up with ‘Naitch’ in a social setting during WrestleMania week.

SmackDown Main Event: I hear that the bout between @RealJackSwagger vs. @IAmJericho this Friday night on Smackdown is a dandy. Anxious to watch it.

His Pipebomb Promo From 1996: Funny how some fans are just discovering my original ‘pipe bomb’ promo from 1996. It pales in comparison to @CMPunk but it was somewhat unique for the day. I remember wearing poor, Jerry Brisco out as we rode together from Philly to Hershey as he had to listen over and over to what I thought I would say.

TNA Impact Wrestling Results From Chicago (3/14)

10

Report by Stuart Carapola @ PWInsider.com

Impact Wrestling starts their first night on the road, live from the Sears Center in Chicago. They’ve got a pretty impressive-sized crowd who looks really happy to be there.

Tonight: Bully Ray’s first appearance as the TNA World Champion, Brooke Hogan’s reaction following Lockdown, and AJ Styles returns to Impact for the first time in months!

Chavo Guerrero, Jr & Hernandez come out to the ring to open the show with a shot at the World Tag Team Title, but Aces & Eights run in during their entrance and beat them both down. Aces & Eights easily flattens Chavo and Hernandez and toss them out of the ring, then Devon gets a microphone and says that this is the group he said would dominate TNA, and that’s what they’re going to do from now on. Devon then introduces our new TNA World Champion, his brother, Bully Ray! Bubba comes out and looks damn good with that belt over his shoulder, then high fives his brother as he enters the ring. The crowd chants for Jeff Hardy as Bubba asks the crowd if they know who he is, then introduces himself as Bully Ray, the President of Aces & Eights and the TNA World Champion. He’s the guy who used Sting, who screwed Brooke, and made a fool out of Hulk Hogan and every one of us. For nine months, they pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes while they bought it, and he can’t tell Devon how proud he is of him and the brothers as they came into the ring, and when he took that hammer and drilled Jeff Hardy in the back of the head, he felt even more proud. That wasn’t supposed to be the plan, he was supposed to leave the cage when Wes and Garett came into the ring, but that didn’t happen because Hulk sat him down before the match and gave him advice from Andre the Giant to do something memorable. He couldn’t give a damn about Hulk’s advice, but he did something in one night that the NWO couldn’t accomplish ever, and he knows Hulk is here somewhere, so if he has the balls, he wants Hulk to come out and fire them. Bubba says he knows it won’t happen, because they’re Aces & Eights, and when you ride with Aces & Eights, you’ll never walk alone.

Sting is backstage saying that Bubba screwed TNA and is in the fast lane, and it’s pissing him off. He needs to do something, and he’s going to start by talking to Hulk. An extremely angry Sting storms off, but the Knockouts are in tag action when we come back from commercial!

We look back at this past Sunday when Taryn Terrell “accidentally” cost Gail Kim the Knockouts Title match by attacking her, then we get comments from Gail Kim from earlier tonight. Her heart goes out to Brooke Hogan, but she made the right decision by putting Taryn Terrell on probation and tells Terrell she better not ever put her hands on her again.

Knockouts Champion Velvet Sky & Mickie James vs Tara & Gail Kim

Gail and Velvet start us off and trade takedowns, Velvet snaps Gail to the mat by the hair and nearly drags her over to Tara by accident before realizing her error and dragging her completely back across the ring to Mickie. Micie comes in and goes to town on Gail with punches and kicks, hits an enzigiuri, and covers for 2 as we go to commercial.

We’re back as a very patriotically-attired Tara is working Mickie over and tying her up in the ropes with a tarantula. Tara stops to argue with Taryn Terrell while Gail dishes out punishment on the DL, then Tara covers for 2. Gail and Tara hit a double slingshot suplex on Mickie and Gail covers for 2. Gail gets in Terrell’s face again, but wastes too much time on that side work and takes a flying headscissors from Mickie. Gail and Mickie wipe each other out with a double clothesline and make simultaneous tags, then Velvet starts running Tara over with clotheslines before jabbing a boot at Gail on the floor. Gail breaks a cover at 2, then goes back to arguing with Terrell and dares Terrell to hit her. Terrell doesn’t, so Gail piefaces her and shoves her down to the mat. Terrell really should disqualify her for that, but instead she opts to slap her, stunning her long enough for Mickie to hit a flying crotch off the top rope. Tara swoops in and hits Mickie with the Widow’s Peak, but Velvet comes in and hits In Your Face for the win.

Winners: Velvet Sky & Mickie James

OOOOOOOOOH, Taryn’s going to get in trouble for that one!

We go back to the Aces & Eights Satellite Clubhouse where Bubba tells everyone that Hulk doesn’t have the balls to do anything to them, but he wants to propose a toast to everyone who has stuck by him the last nine months, and they share a beer while Bubba says he hasn’t heard from his wife in a while. He tries calling her, but she sends him right to voicemail, so he asks why she’s not returning his calls. He says the boys want to say hi to her, so he holds the phone out and they all go “HI BROOKE!” and then he tells her to call him back and tell Dad he says hi.

The annoying cameraman catches up to Hulk Hogan backstage and asks about his daughter and whether he’s going to fire Aces & Eights tonight, and Hulk just says “not now” and slams the office door shut behind him.

Robbie E vs Rob Terry

Robbie E gets a microphone before the match and says Lockdown was a fluke, and he won’t get so lucky tonight, BRO. E sneaks in and suckerpunches T, but T no sells him, clotheslines his head off, hiptosses him clear across the ring, press slams him to the mat, then drills him with a charging clothesline in the corner. Robbie T picks E up in a suplex and converts it into a powerslam. T gets fired up, drags E to his feet, drills him with a spinebuster, and makes a very…um, dirty looking cover for 3.

Winner: Rob Terry

Rob’s dancing music hits, he dances and does one-handed pushups.

Sting is backstage and walks into Hulk Hogan’s office, which has an Impact Wrestling logo on the wall for some reason even though they’re only there for the night. Hulk looks at Sting unhappily as we go to commercial. I bet Hulk’s going to blame Sting for vouching for Bubba and ask him where he’s at, DUDE.

We go back to the Aces & Eights Satellite Clubhouse where Bubba is shocked that there’s no Aces & Eights merch in the TNA catalog. He says to open the catalog to a random page and whoever they find there will have to pay. They seem amused by who they land on, Bubba says it’ll be tough but they’ll take whoever it is out tonight.

We go to Hulk’s office where Sting says they need to Hulk, and Hogan asks if he’s there to get the last breath from him. He asks if Sting knows what he’s done by vouching for Bubba and swearing he’s a nice guy, and now Aces & Eights holds the company hostage and Bubba has the title. It may not mean anything to Sting, but Bubba’s married to his daughter. Sting says it does matter and not to fire Aces & Eights, because they need to set this right. Hulk says he knows how this movie ends, they have the title, his daughter’s in a marriage she doesn’t want to be in, and they’ve ruined the company. Hulk’s in a place he doesn’t want to be in, then kicks Sting out of the office and says he makes him sick. Wow, that’s a bit harsh, now isn’t it?

We look back at the recent history of AJ Styles, and we’ll see his return to TNA next!

Bobby Roode and Austin Aries find Sting backstage and say it must be a tough night since he ruined everything. All the boys in the locker room are talking about how he screwed the company and blame him for letting Bubba get the TNA World Title. Now Aries and Roode have nobody to wrestle tonight, even though they were going to give Hogan and Sting a title shot after that. Sting says he’s had enough, and he wants to fight tonight. Aries gets in Sting’s face and asks if he wants to fight them, Sting says yeah, and Aries says Roode is happy to fight him any day of the week. Aries doesn’t realize that Roode snuck away, so Sting says he’s going to fight Aries tonight instead.

AJ Styles comes out to the ring for the first time in months, but his music stops and Bad Influence’s music hits instead. Kazarian and Daniels come out dressed and face painted like the Road Warriors, Kazarian says that tonight isn’t just the first live Impact on the road, and it’s definitely not hte first time AJ Styles has disappointed his fans since he’s gotten quite good at that, but Bad Influence is bringing back Throwback Thursday! Since they’re in the Second City, they’re paying homage to the second best tag team in wrestling history. Kazarian says TELL ‘EM, CHRIS, and Daniels goes WELLLLLLL, those legends of the past were fake tough guys, just like AJ Styles and every one of the fans. They’re real tough guys, real ring warriors, and they’re the Legion of BOOM! Daniels goes OHHHHHHHHHH WHAT A TUSH while pointing at his ass, then tells the fans they have permission to worship them now. James Storm comes out to the ring and says he was backstage listening to themn run their mouth about AJ Styles and one of the greatest tag teams in history while claiming to be tough guys. Storm’s sure that AJ will come out and say what he thinks of them, but that greatest tag team is a little bit taller and a little more over than they’ll ever be, and they’re actually from Chicago (they’re actually not). Storm says he’ll let them decide which one of them gets the crap kicked out of them right now, and since a referee is already in the ring, Storm grabs Daniels and we’re off with an impromptu match!

James Storm vs Christopher Daniels

Storm just destroys Daniels, rams him into Kazarian on the apron, and rolls him up for 2. Kazarian grabs Storm’s ankle and trips him from the outside, allowing Daniels to sneak in and nail Storm and put the boots to him. Daniels gets some kneestrikes to the chest and gets a rear bearhug, but Storm comes back with a series of clotheslines and a bulldog. Daniels escapes the Eye of the Storm and hits a uranage, but Storm dodges the BME and hits Closing Time. Storm gets distracted by Kazarian and Daniels tries a rollup, but Storm hits something I didn’t catch and cradles Daniels for the win.

Winner: James Storm

Daniels and Kazarian jump Storm after the match and put the boots to him, but AJ Styles finally comes out in his “sleeping on a park bench” outfit and punches Kazarian in the face before going after Daniels, who rolls out of the ring to avoid another beating. Storm gets to his feet to stand with his buddy AJ, who turns around and clotheslines his head off. AJ pulls his hood back up, then pulls it back off, then leaves.

We look back at Sunday when Wes Brisco beat Kurt Angle, then we go backstage where Brisco is conveniently goading Angle into a fight so Aces & Eights can beat him down. Angle’s left in a heap as Aces & Eights strolls off laughing.

Joseph Park comes out to the ring and says it’s been a big year for him: he got his first big win on Impact over in the UK and he even won again last weekend at Lockdown. All this success made him take a step back and reflect on his life and accomplishments, like graduating first in his class at law school, and making partner at Park, Park & Park (by the way, he apologizes to his colleagues in the crowd, who got crappy seats because he doesn’t have much clout around here). But he’s most happy about being here in Chicago because he’s a Cubs fan (the crowd boos), and sitting behind the goal at all the Blackhawks games, but nothing has been as exciting as being at Impact Wrestling and he can’t wait for what’s next. He finds out what’s next when Matt Morgan’s music hits, and the big man comes out to go face to face with our severely educated friend. Morgan comes out to cut a promo on Hulk Hogan, asking if the Bubba thing turned out like he hoped, and says that Hulk never made a bigger mistake than the joke standing in front of him right now. Park looks indignant as Morgan says the fact that Hogan signed this clown to a wrestling contract is an abortion to the sport of wrestling. He calls Park a fat oaf, then tells Hogan that he’ll start eliminating his mistakes one by one, starting…with Park. Morgan says that unless Park wants him to knock every one of his teeth down his throat, Park better get out of HIS ring right now. Park looks unsure, but Morgan tells him to leave and never come back. That does it for Park, who angrily steps back into the ring and tells Morgan that people from Chicago never back down from a fight, so if he wants to fight, let’s do it right now. Morgan looks surprised, then smiles at Park as he takes his jacket off. Morgan asks if he’s serious and says that he’s got to be kidding, because we don’t do things how Park wants, they do them on Morgan’s time. Morgan turns to leave, but Park makes the amateur mistake of turning his back and catches a Carbon Footprint in the grill. Morgan picks the microphone back up, crouches over Park, and says that his time is next week.

Back to the Aces & Eights Satellite Clubhouse, where Bubba gloats about taking out Chavo, Hernandez, and Angle, then dares Hogan again to fire them, and says that if he won’t come to them, they might just come to him. He already destroyed his family, now they’re going to destroy the show, and the entire group gets up to head out to cause a little damage.

We see a video package looking back at this past weekend when Bubba betrayed the Hogan’s, and we see Brooke, one of the only three people in the world who didn’t see this coming a mile away, freaking out over being used by Bubba.

It’s main event time!

Sting vs Austin Aries

Feeling out process to start, crowd is way behind Aries as he chain wrestles around Sting and brushes his hands off in the corner. Sting picks Aries up out of a headlock and places him on the top rope where he starts unloading with punches and kicks. Aries dodges a Stinger Splash and rolls out to the floor as Bobby Roode comes out to ringside to “support” his partner. He gives Aries a pep talk and sends him back inside, Sting winds up on the floor beating Roode up and gives him a Stinger Splash against the rail, and sees Aries coming off the top rope with a double axhandle. Aries nails his own partner, Sting rams Aries into the barricage, and the main event continues after this commercial break.

We’re back and Sting is still beating Aries up. Aries nails Sting from behind when Roode creates a distraction, but that doesn’t last long as Sting clotheslines Aries to the floor and goes back to yelling at Roode. The referee finally ejects Roode, but Roode keeps arguing long enough to give Aries the opportunity to slip in and clips Sting’s knee from behind, then take him out with a dive when he rolls out to the floor. Aries makes a cover for 2, then chokes Sting with his boot. Aries snapmares Sting and dropkicks him in the back of the head, but only gets a 2 count as a result. Sting tries to fight back until Aries dropkicks his knees out from under him and rams his knee into the mat. Aries holds the ropes to dodge a dropkick and goes for the Scorpion Deathlock, but can’t quite seem to figure the move out and gets kicked off. Sting starts comeback #36 and takes Aries out with a clothesline, but Aries squirms out to the apron when Sting goes for the Scorpion Deathlock. Aries nails Sting with a missile dropkick and mocks his howling, but Sting pops right back up and waits for Aries to turn around so he can press slam him, Aries dodges a Stinger Splash and connects with the IED and a Stinger Splash, but Sting slips out of a brainbuster attempt and hits the Scorpion Deathdrop. Aries becomes the first person to kick out of that in like a decade, but Sting hits the Stinger Splash and gets the Deathlock right in the middle of the ring. Aries nearly taps, but Aces & Eights runs in and beat Sting down 547-on-1.

Winner: Sting by DQ

Bubba has a microphone and tells Aces & Eights to hold him up, then says he used Sting and asks if Hogan is gonna remember Aces & Eights now. Bubba asks where “dad” is, and we’ll see what happens after this commercial break!

We’re back and Bubba is still calling Hogan out, and Hulk finally gets the cue that they’re back from commercial and comes out to the top of the ramp on his crutches. Wow, he looks PISSED. Hogan says that firing Bubba would be the easy way out after everything he did to him, his family, and the company, and he’s going to get his. He’s giving everyone in TNA clearance to go after Aces & Eights, and suddenly the locker room empties as just about everybody runs in to attack them. It doesn’t go well for TNA, as Aces & Eights proceeds to kick the entire roster’s asses. The beatdown goes for several minutes, and the TNA guys keep trying to fight back, but Aces & Eights ends up winning the fight, and as Bubba stands over the fallen TNA wrestlers and whips them with his chain, he asks Hogan if this is what he meant by doing something memorable. Bubba tells Hogan that that was his cavalry, and his cavalry just got taken out by Aces & Eights, then asks Hogan what he’s going to do…DAD? Bubba and Aces & Eights stares Hogan down as we call it a night.

Hulk Hogan Talks About The Big Changes In TNA, His Health, His Daughter Brooke & More

21

Hulk Hogan joined Busted Open with Dave Lagreca and Doug Mortman an hour before Lockdown began at the Alamadome. Here are highlights from the interview.

His knee and overall health:

“Thursday was a month, so a month and two and a half days for the old knee replacement, so I think I’m doing good. I saw some other wrestlers that had some knee replacements done and around the same time, I feel like Tarzan here all of a sudden, they said they weren’t even going to be able to walk around for eight or nine weeks, so I’m a little bit ahead of schedule.

“The weird thing is, now I got two new knees, two new hips; after eight back surgeries my back’s fixed, I think I should be getting a title shot pretty soon. The oldest Heavyweight Champion of the world.”

Brooke Getting More Involved in TNA:

“Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. It’s actually my worst nightmare coming true, but I’m not the one who’s in charge of her happiness and for some reason she seems to light up when she’s around this business. She’s really good on camera, like when we were doing Hogan Knows Best I used to say she’s the only one in the family that’s a real actor. So for her to be around the business and she’s got this built in following and she’s got a good instinct for the wrestling business. I’m to the point where she’s not 18 anymore and she’s in her early 20?s so she’s got to choose her direction. Life is all about choices. The one thing I worry about, I’ll watch Kurt Angle walk around in back, I’ll watch Jeff Hardy walk around in the back, and they’re kind of borderline of maybe going too far and I don’t want them to end up like me, that’s what I’m worried about with Brooke. I don’t want her to get into this business and blow her knees out or hurt her back. We have a masseuse that comes to the house like once a week, maybe once every two weeks, and he goes ‘O my gosh, your daughters got the same injuries you do.’ I’m going, ‘what do you mean?’ He goes, ‘well her backs got that same tweak in it and the knees got the same tweak.’ A lot of it’s genetic, but my biggest fear is her getting in this business, and you don’t have to wrestle 30 years like I did, you could wrestle 2 years or a year and a half or 5 years and get hurt, so that’s my biggest fear.”

Fans Buying into Brooke:

“It’s just so weird, because, you’ve got all these naysayers. I run social media now because Brooke and my son, Nick, have taught me how to do it, and you get on the social media and you get all these naysayers that say, ‘how come Hogan is still hanging out in wrestling?’ or ‘I want to be a writer for TNA, their creative sucks, give me a job’ and ‘why is he pushing his daughter in this business?’ and all of a sudden, nobody realizes it, all of a sudden there’ll be the Pope or Jesse Sorensen or there’ll be Hulk Hogan, you don’t know what everybody’s contract is, you don’t know if Sting can wrestle 200 days a year or twenty days a year. You don’t know what his contract says and there’s so many givens that these people don’t know, so I kind of have to back away from them because I realize I’m the biggest mark there is. I love this business, I watch all the shows, I watch our show and everybody else’s show just like a fan and I realize that these are all a bunch of marks, just like me, that don’t know the whole story. Then when I see ‘what are you still doing in wrestling?’ or ‘why is your daughter in it?’ Then I think about Lou Thesz who wrestled into his 70?s, I think about Vince McMahon who is a lot older than me, I think about Vince’s daughter Stephanie who’s part of the business, so you just have to take it with a grain of salt. It’s hard to separate the two. There are a lot of family members who are part of the business, second generation wrestlers, and they don’t have to be all men, they can be women, just like Von Erich’s daughter Lacy was in it. Vince’s daughter Stephanie wrestled. It’s just so weird how the social media fans will try to pick individual things apart.”

Fans Not Knowing What’s Really Going on Backstage & Bobby Roode’s Expiring:

“When you’re working for a company, sometimes you don’t focus on what your contract says. I was here last year, I was working at a PPV and my contract had run out. I didn’t know it. Dixie didn’t know it. We weren’t worried about it. We’re here because we love this business and all of a sudden I call my attorney and say, ‘Henry, is my contract up?’ He goes, ‘Yeah, it ran out ten days ago.’ I didn’t even know it. Dixie didn’t know. We weren’t worried about that; we were worried about putting on a good show. It’s just so weird that ‘O my god, Bobby Roode’s contract is over’, I looked at Twitter today, ‘Hogan you’re an idiot, afterthought, dumb@$$.’ All these things that are being said to me, I’ve got nothing to do with that. Here’s the deal; Bobby Roode, great talent. I’m sure he wants to be here or he wants to be anywhere and he can make his own deal, but we sure don’t want him going anywhere. We love him to death. I was hoping that he’d have the belt on the UK tour just so we’d have a TNA champion over there. It’s all weird how everybody tries to tear our business apart. We’re all here for the same reason, we love this business and if he doesn’t have a contract I bet Booby Roode would wrestle tonight without a contract until we get it straightened out. That’s how much he loves it.”

TNA’s new road schedule and leaving the Impact Zone:

“The truth is, all that stuff [about the Impact Zone] was incorrect if I said anything negatively because there were a lot of crowds that came in that weren’t wrestling crowds, they were just part of the park. But the weird thing is, all that stuff that was so bad or was a horrible thing, I mean, now that I actually look at it, it was actually a setup to move on to something better or a stepping stone to this company becoming great. That all happened for a reason. We weren’t ready to go out on the road a couple of years ago. So thank god for Universal. Now I look at it completely different than maybe what I said before.”

TNA Cutting Back To 4 PPV’s a year:

“I think we need to switch gears and yes I do like it. It’s just helter skelter. All of a sudden it’s like every company has a PPV every month and nothing meant nothing and I think we’re just trying to get back to the dance. Not like wrestling used to be, but like how wrestling should be and just make things mean something again. I think for us as a company, for us to keep gaining momentum and not really care about what anybody else does, but like I said, make this from a good little company to a great company. I think we’re regrouping in the right places. The TV is our star, the Spike network. A lot of our payoffs, to me, we were throwing the dart at the wrong target. We were worried about a PPV where we should be worried about the TV that’s supporting us and build up some major angles and then bang, have them on TV instead of the PPV. Now we can get these major angles on TV and have the bigger, bigger ones for these four PPVs, so I think we’re on track with it.”

The Rock Pushing For A Role In The New Star Wars Movie

96

During this week’s media tour of Sydney, Australia to promote “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” WWE Champion The Rock told Adelaidenow.com.au that he’s got his got his sights set on a role in the new Star Wars movie.

“I played with two lines of action figures when I was a kid: G.I. Joe and Star Wars,” The Rock said. “By the way, because we didn’t have a lot of money, I used to steal them. I’d just rip open the packages and shove ’em in my pockets … like a lot of kids. I got caught a couple of times, got my ass kicked by my parents.

“So when I got the call saying, ‘How do you feel about becoming the leader of the G.I. Joes?’, it was like if I got a call from George Lucas saying, ‘I want you to be in Star Wars’.”

George Lucas recently announced that J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Lost) will be directing the next installment of the Star Wars franchise, due out in 2015. Not one to sit around if there’s something out there he wants – The Rock plans to contact the powers that be to land himself a role in the blockbuster film.

“I’m gonna call J.J. and you’re gonna help by printing it and I’m gonna be in Star Wars!” The Rock said.

CM Punk Injury Scare At RAW, Goldust’s Status For WM29, WWE Reaches Out To Another Former Diva

35

– There was some concern in WWE that CM Punk might have been injured on RAW during his no disqualification match against Kane. At one point in the match, Punk took a bad bump and cameras quickly cut away, while referee Mike Chioda threw up the “X” symbol. A trainer came down to look at Punk, but Punk ended up finishing the match. Between this and the recent incident at a WWE live event where The Miz dropped Punk on his head during a botched stalled suplex, the road to WrestleMania has been a bumpy one for Punk, to say the least.

– WWE legend Goldust commented on his WrestleMania 29 status on Thursday:

“Looks like i will be watching #WM29 this year from the comfort of my home. #newkidsontheblock ! Hope they know the opportunity they have!!!”

Goldust has been pushing for years to get a WrestleMania match against his younger brother, Cody. After his surprise return at the Royal Rumble, it looked like he might have finally gotten his wish, but .. there’s always next year. He mentioned that, he “might have to hit up Booker T for a reunion against Rhodes Scholars.”

– As previously reported, WWE has been reaching out to former Divas in hopes of getting them to return to the company. Aside from Kelly Kelly and Maryse, they also reportedly reached out to Beth Phoenix.

WrestleMania 29 Rumored Matches, Event Sold Out, NXT Stars At Axxess

41

WWE WrestleMania 29 Resutls at SEScoops.com On April 7th

WWE WrestleMania 29 is just around the corner, and we’ve got an update on several matches planned for the big event.

WrestleMania 29 Rumored Matches:

– After returning to WWE at the Royal Rumble, Chris Jericho is still without an opponent for the show. Believe it or not, there’s actually been talk of Jericho wrestling Fandango.

  • Hit up the comments below and tell us what you think about a potential Chris Jericho vs. Fandango match.

– Also rumored for the card is an 8-person mixed tag team match featuring Brodus Clay, Tensai & The Funkdactyls vs. Team Rhodes Scholars & The Bella Twins.

– As noted earlier this week, the current plan for the WWE tag titles is for Team Hell No (Kane & Daniel Bryan) to defend against the team of Dolph Ziggler and Big E Langston. Ziggler has stated in multiple interviews that he will be cashing in his Money in the Bank contract “at or before” WrestleMania 29. Could this be the night we see Dolph Ziggler capture the World Heavyweight title?

– Regarding the Divas Title match (if there is one), it will likely be Kaitlyn vs. Layla, but they might end up doing another multi-person match to get more women on the show.

WrestleMania 29 Pre-Show & Axxess:

Eve Torres Visits NXT & Lance Storm Blogs About Training NXT Students

0

– NXT trainer Bill DeMott noted on Twitter that former WWE Diva Eve Torres was at NXT working with the developmental Divas earlier this week.

– ECW original Lance Storm has published a new blog at StormWrestling.com talking about his recent visit to WWE developmental:

“Many people have asked how the guest training gig came about and there really isn’t that much too it. I keep in touch with many people within WWE, and maintain a good relationship with the company. I was once the head trainer for their developmental program when it was based in OVW, I have a few SWA grads in their developmental program, so it just seemed like a natural fit, so when the opportunity came I jumped at it. It was a chance for me to pass on a bit of my knowledge to the newest batch of developmental talent as well as keep abreast of how WWE is doing things and what they are looking for in future talent. It is a win win situation if there ever was one.”

The training itself kept me extremely busy; NXT is a big operation with a lot of bodies, so I was doing 8am to 5pm training days. Talent doesn’t train that many hours a day but with rotating classes trainers log a lot of hours. NXT has several trainers but unfortunately not all of them were there for my week. I missed out on catching up with Norman Smiley, Sara Del Rey, and Terry Taylor, but did spend a lot of time with Bill DeMott, Joey Mercury, and Ricky Steamboat. Bill and I have been friends since our WCW days (2000) and the relationship we formed during our time together there will no doubt last forever. Joey and I go back to my time teaching in OVW (2004), where he was but a pupil and seeing him now as the teacher and continuing to pass on the art of our business to the next generation was very rewarding. I didn’t really know Mr. Steamboat that well at the start of the week, having only met him on 2 brief occasions, but working alongside him was certainly a highlight of the trip. I thought we complimented each other well, with his experience and knowledge and my in ring hands on approach, talent no doubt picked up a lot, I know I did. If you spend a week with a HOF’er like Ricky Steamboat and don’t learn something you’re really not paying attention.

RVD Not Booked For Thursday’s Impact, Contract Expiring Soon

18

TNA star Rob Van Dam says he won’t be at Thursday’s Impact Wrestling from Chicago, the latest sign that he could be on his way out of the company. When asked by a fan on Twitter if he’s looking forward to the show, he responded:

RVD, who recently dropped the X-Division title to Kenny King, did an interview on the Joe McDonnell Uncensored podcast back in October and revealed that his contract with TNA expires this month.

During an interview earlier this month on the Shining Wizards podcast, he was asked if he plans to end his career in TNA. He said, “Not necessarily. I really don’t look that far ahead. I go with the flow. I don’t know, when I will be completely finished and where I will be when I make that decision.

The Miz Talks WrestleMania 29, Working With Ric Flair, His Main Event Push & More

6

WWE superstar The Miz appeared on the  Busted Open satellite radio show this week. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

The Perception That He’s the ‘Reality TV Guy’: “I think now more than ever, especially with Flair being in my corner and kind of mentoring me, I think now I have the biggest microscope on me because it’s like, wait a second, this guy is still an outsider. I still consider myself an outsider.

“It’s not that I haven’t gotten over it. I feel like the fans haven’t yet, as in, the older fans. The kids, sure. The kids have gotten over it. They don’t even know that I was on the Real World. They know me as Miz from WWE. But I feel like guys your age probably, still, no matter what, will always have that chip on their shoulder about me, no matter what. I mean, when I was main eventing Wrestlemania I guarantee everyone was like, ‘well why is this guy doing it, why is The Miz getting these opportunities’?

“Any time a superstar is main eventing Wrestlemania, if you’re not jealous, mad, angry that you’re not in that spot, then there’s something wrong with you and you shouldn’t be in WWE.

Main-Eventing Wrestlemania 27: “My take on that Wrestlemania was I was getting an opportunity of a lifetime. I was getting my childhood dream. I wanted to be that guy in the main event of Wrestlemania and I was getting that opportunity. Was I nervous? Was I scared that I was going to fail? Absolutely. I think anyone in that position would be. But I was also very confident in myself, knowing me, I will work harder than anybody, I will do whatever it takes to be successful in this industry and make sure that people say, ‘you know what? That was awesome.’ And I don’t remember my Wrestlemania moment because I was concussed. I got tackled off of a table onto the concrete and I don’t remember anything, I do remember being victorious, but the moment that I will always have with me is this moment. And right before I was coming out, they did this amazing video package of just my entire career, of people telling me that I wasn’t going to make it. It was just an incredible video. I do my entrance, I get into the ring, I hold the WWE Championship up, then Cena’s entrance happens. During that entrance, I’m black, nobody’s seeing me, nobody’s looking at me, I see my ten best friends sitting in the front row. The friends that I watched in my living room, Wrestlemania after Wrestlemania, all watching me in the main event with my WWE championship and me looking at them and going, ‘we did it.’ That is my moment. No one will ever be able to take that away from me and that was what it was all about.”

Whether His Main Event Push Came Too Soon: “I don’t think it was too soon at all. I think I was hot right then and there. I was at my pinnacle, if you will, and it all came to point when I won the WWE Championship and retained it at Wrestlemania. But do I ever think I’ll be it again? Absolutely. Every year I’m working hard to basically be in that position and sometimes you get it and other times you don’t. It’s timing, it’s luck, it’s skill. So many things get involved to being in that main event. You have to peak at the perfect time, and sometimes you’re not peaking at the right time. Sometimes you’re peaking when mania isn’t around. But that’s when you want to peak. You’re training for it, you’re dieting, you’re working hard in the ring. Every time we go out there on Monday Night Raw, I’m thinking of new ways that I can possibly get this audience to either love me or hate me. It’s so hard. But the thing is; you love it. Because you want people like you guys, on Busted Open radio, talking about it the next day. Whether it’s good or bad, I don’t care, as long as you’re talking about me, so be it.

Doing Commentary Work: “I always look at myself as I’m a bumbler. My mind works way faster than my mouth does. You might not realize it, a lot of people don’t realize it, but I’ll be like, ‘man, I bumbled that word.’ When you’re on commentary, I didn’t realize how hard it was until I did the 3-hour Raw with Michael Cole and I didn’t realize how valuable a commentator Michael Cole is. Let me tell you something, being there, seeing him go play by play and telling the stories, every story that he has to know in and out, and just going and going, its incredible to watch him and be a partner with him. I didn’t ask for the job on Main Event. Do you know how I got this job? So, I did that 3-hour Raw, and the next week Main Event was starting. They were like, ‘well, the guy that we want to do it won’t be there this week, can you try it out?’ And I was like, ‘sure, no problem.’ So, I did it. The next week comes, ‘he’s still not here, he’ still doing a charity event, can you do it again?’ ‘Sure, no problem.’ Did it. The next week Michael Cole goes to me, ‘congratulations, you got the job.’ And I went, ‘what? I didn’t realize I was auditioning for the job.’”

Being A Babyface But Not Changing His Character: “I have Google Alerts; anytime someone talks about me on the internet I get the feed, so I’m always reading up and people saying things. My favorite is this, and people on the internet have been saying this for about a year now, ‘Miz needs to change to babyface; he needs to be a good guy; he’s the same character as a bad guy; he’s saying the same things.’ So then I change to a good guy and now guess what they’re saying? ‘He needs to go back to being a bad guy.’ The thing about it is, I’ve always looked at myself as a good guy. Even when people proclaim me as a villain I’ve always said, ‘you know what? I’m not a bad guy. The reason why I do the things that I do is because I want to win and I know I’m not bigger, I’m probably not as technical as some people, but I will cheat to win. I will do whatever I possibly can do to win,’ and now I’m still that same exact person and I’m still cocky and arrogant but now I feel like I’m their cocky and arrogant person. And I’m doing it to people that they hate even more than me, which I didn’t even know that could be possible.”

Working with Ric Flair: “Ric Flair has been very, very hands on with me since day one. Ric Flair has always been person that I’ve looked up to, that I’ve respected in this business. He’s done it all. He always takes me aside and says, ‘listen, here’s an easier way to get into the figure 4, here’s a way to make it work better for you,’ and the greatest thing about Ric Flair is he still wants me to be me. He doesn’t want me to say, ‘the Ric Flair Woo, I’m going to Woo. Ric Flair does struts, I’m going to strut.’ He’s like, ‘be your own superstar. This is what worked for me. What is going to work for you as a WWE superstar?’ That’s something that I’ve taken and really put out there. I’m going to be The Miz and I’m going to do things the way Miz would do.”

His Role at Wrestlemania 29: “I am excited to see Wrestlemania 29 April 7 at MetLife Stadium as well and I’m hoping that I am a valuable part. If they do give me the opportunity to have a match or to have a MizTV or to have anything on that show, I want to be the person that’s talked about the next day on Monday Night Raw. Granted, there’s huge, huge talent there. You have The Rock versus John Cena for the WWE Championship. Swagger versus Alberto Del Rio, who are amazing talents, going for the World Heavyweight Championship. As of right now, this card is building to be one of the biggest cards you will ever see and it’s going to be absolutely incredible and I can’t wait to be a part of it and I know I will be a part of it because I’m just too big not be.”

WWE Interested In Bringing Back Former Divas, David Otunga Promotes “The Call”

57

– Monday’s Raw saw the return of The Bella Twins to WWE, who appeared in a backstage segment with Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow and Kaitlyn. The twin duo had been in contract negotiations with officials from the sports-entertainment organization for approximately two months, with offers triggered by the feeling of lacking depth among the Divas ranks and talent in developmental not being ready to be promoted. Contract offers have also been made to Maryse Ouellet and the former Kelly Kelly, Barbie Blank. Both starlets rejected the company’s overtures, but are believed to still be in negotiations.

  • Discussion – What former Divas should WWE bring back? Comment below.

– Promoting Friday’s theater release of WWE Studios’ The Call starring Halle Berry, David Otunga spoke to Arda Ocal of The Baltimore Sun. The WWE Superstar, who plays young gun police officer Jake Devans in the flick, discussed Berry’s sense of humor, loving acting, whether he wants to continue acting, initial impressions from the locker room concerning his Harvard Law degree, head honcho Vince McMahon “hating lawyers,” and more. Regarding his experience filming the movie, Otunga states:

“We shot for a little under two months. The days were great, you get there and they just call you in when you have to do a scene so you get a lot of down time. But you’re in a trailer for a long time, your scenes are laid out for you so you know your lines already, which is a new thing going in for me. In WWE we’re sometimes handed something at the last minute, like ‘here you go to pages’ or ‘oh we’re changing our minds,’ so with this we had the scenes for months. I was comfortable so when it was time to do our scenes they would come and take you to set, we’d knock it out and when you were done you got to go home. It’s easy.”

Kurt Angle Talks About Where TNA Will Be In 5 Years, Retirement & More

16

TNA star Kurt Angle was recently interviewed by ChicagoNow.com to promote Thursday’s live edition of Impact Wrestling from the Windy City. Here are some highlights of what Angle said about:

Where TNA Will Be In 5 Years: It continues to grow no doubt worldwide. We are on the road for good and we are taking little steps to improve the overall product. I believe in 5 years if things are done right we could be competing with the monster (WWE). They have amazing programming and Vince McMahon has done wonders for his product. I have been in Impact Wrestling for 7 years and I thought by now we would be up in the ratings. I believe that’s going to take a little more time.

Retirement: I might be involved in some way but not in the ring. I might have a part time schedule where I do some selected shows, which I can handle. If I decide to do that I won’t announce my retirement. But I’m going to give TNA the next 3 years of my absolute best and see what happens.

He also spoke about the International Olympic Committee’s decision to pull wrestling from the 2020 Olympic games, the Attitude Era and more.

WrestleMania Retrospective – WrestleMania V (1989)

3

Here’s Part 5 of our WrestleMania Retrospective series, looking back at past WrestleMania events as we march towards WrestleMania 29 on April 7th.

WrestleMania V (1989)WrestleManiaV-Poster

Tagline: The Mega Powers Explode!
Date: March 27, 1988
Venue: Trump Plaza, Atlantic City, NJ
Attendance: 18,946
America The Beautiful: WWF Women’s Champion Rockin’ Robin

For the only time in WrestleMania History, WrestleMania IV and V were held at the same venue. Future WWE Hall Of Farmer Donald Trump stated in media outlets, that after the first WrestleMania was such a success, he had to have it again at Atlantic City.  Although the event was promoted as being at the Trump Plaza, it was in fact held in the adjacent Boardwalk Hall.

The main feud heading into WrestleMania was between Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage, with the two battling over the WWF Championship.
Hogan and Savage first crossed paths on the October 3, 1987 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event, Savage got a shot at The Honky Tonk Man’s Intercontinental Championship but was attacked by the Hart Foundation; Hogan came to Savage’s rescue, thus solidifying Savage’s face turn.

At WrestleMania IV in March 1988, Savage defeated Ted DiBiase in a tournament final to win the vacant WWF Championship with help from Hogan and Hogan soon after came into the ring to congratulate Savage. Soon after, the duo formed a tag team known as The Mega Powers. They feuded with many heel tag teams throughout the entire year and were a successful team.

WrestleManiaV-SavageElbow

Mega Powers ruled and dominated the WWF for several months. However, their domination and tag team began to breakup in early 1989 as tensions slowly began to build between the two.

This all began on the January 7, 1989 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event, when Hogan was mercilessly beaten by The Twin Towers after his match with Akeem.

Savage came out and cleared the ring with a steel chair. Elizabeth took Hogan to the backstage which angered Savage. He thought that he was a third wheel and this was the beginning of the breakup of Mega Powers as Savage was angry that why his wife Miss Elizabeth was used by Hogan as his manager. He confronted her about the issue but she took Hogan to the backstage.

Problems increased further in the Royal Rumble match where Hogan accidentally eliminated Savage as he was trying to eliminate Bad News Brown.

On February 3 at The Main Event, Hogan and Savage faced The Twin Towers (Akeem and The Big Boss Man) in a tag team match that would set up the Mega Powers’ breakup. During a key point in the match, Savage was thrown out of the ring onto Elizabeth, knocking her unconscious. Hogan carried her to the back, leaving Savage to fend for himself in the ring against the much larger Akeem and Big Bossman;

Hogan eventually returned, but Savage slapped him in the face and took the belt in his hand and turned heel by abandoning Hogan.

Despite this, Hogan managed to pick up the win. After the match, Savage explained his frustrations to hogan and eventually attacked Hogan in the medical area of the arena.

Hogan would later challenge Savage to a match for the WWF Championship at WrestleMania, which Savage accepted.

The second main feud heading into WrestleMania was between Rick Rude and The Ultimate Warrior over the WWF Intercontinental Championship. Rude and Warrior were booked to face each other in a “Super Posedown” at Royal Rumble in January 1989. The winner had to be decided by a fan reaction, where Warrior won the posedown. After the posedown, a furious and angry Rude attacked Warrior. This led to a feud between the two and an Intercontinental title match at WrestleMania.

Elijah Burke talks About His Pope Character Originating In WWE, His Time In TNA, Hogan & Bischoff

4

Kayfabe Wrestling Radio
Hosted by Alan Wojcik
Listen Live on Tuesday Nights 9pm ET on Wildtalkradio.com

Former WWE, ECW and TNA star and in his first public interview since his departure from TNA “The Pope” Elijah Burke joined Kayfabe Wrestling Radio Tuesday Night. In a nearly 45 minute interview, he discussed his ‘Pope’ character in WWE and what it almost was, what he’d do to the Pope Mobile if elected by the cardinals, how the Pope character came about in TNA, the person he had the most fun in ring with, what he thought of Bischoff and Hogan coming into TNA, his appearances on Ghost Hunters and in Django Unchained and The Dark Knight Rises, his amateur boxing career and if any of that made its way into the ring, performing at WrestleMania within his first two years in the business and much more.

Listen To Elijah Burke On Kayfabe Wrestling Radio Here (.MP3)

Here are some highlights of what Elijah Burke said about:

How the Pope character was planned to have looked like in WWE: “That’s why the Pope in TNA looked the way it did. When the Pope idea originally surfaced in the WWE, that’s what they wanted; you know, the plan was to have the Pope in a big hat and a staff and all that other stuff but much like with everything in today’s world, you have to modernize it and you can’t stay where you once were. You just kind of have to move forward, you kind of have to tweak things and that’s what I wanted to do with the Pope character; I wanted to make it something different and something unique. I didn’t want to come out in a big hat and I didn’t want to come out with a staff. But Daddy, if the Pope was selected today to be the official bishop of Rome, then a lot of things would change and the first thing I’d do to the Popemobile is put some spinners on it, put some tinted windows on there and put two chicks on each side of me.”

Who creatively came up with the character of ‘The Pope’ in TNA: “Everything that you saw about the Pope, and notice I said the Pope and not D’Angelo Dinero; everything you saw about the Pope was Elijah Burke. It was Elijah Burke turned up, it was something I wanted to bring to the table during my last days with the WWE and it just didn’t pan out so when I got into TNA and we had our creative talks and whatnot, they were going to debut me as Elijah Burke. They were going to bring me in under my regular name of Elijah Burke and I told Russo ‘Hey Russo, I want to do… here’s my Pope character and if you guys like it, it’s what I want to do’. So, basically it was me and Russo and I showed Russo this 5-minute vignette that I can’t for the life of me figure out what I did with it, maybe they kept it. But I did that; I showed Russo, he went into the office, came back out and was like ‘Holy crap, bro, I’m telling you; forget Elijah Burke. You have to do this character. You have to do it; I already have the perfect name for it: D’Angelo Dinero, Money man. Cause that’s what the Pope is, Money.’ And that’s what we went with.”

Who he enjoyed working with the best in TNA: “The most fun I had in the ring in TNA was with AJ Styles. But, on a scientific wrestling level, I loved working with Wolfie (Nigel McGuinness aka Desmond Wolfe in TNA); I call him Wolfie. By Desmond was very unique and so I really did enjoy working with him, and personally and professionally I just enjoyed him; we didn’t have much time outside of the ring together or anything like that but, man, when I found out that I was working him, it was essentially a night. It was fun and it was a learning experience because he was so crafty and his background and what he did; where he came from and his unique wrestling ability, and bringing in the English style, it was something I didn’t get a lot of coming up in this business. I didn’t work a lot of people who had that style, so for me to blend in my in-your-face boxing style, you know the brawling/boxing style with what he does; it was great. I enjoyed it. I was sad when his time was up; I thought me and him should have had a lot more great matches and feuds, but that didn’t happen. But I enjoyed the time I had with him.”

His feelings of Hogan and Bischoff coming into TNA: “Well, you don’t have to use other folks to explain my comments because I’m going to give you what I feel regardless. I do think Bischoff and Hogan coming into the company did what it was supposed to do, and that was to, whether it was negative or positive, it was to bring more attention to the product and when you look at the overall issue, the underlying issue and overall factor, the matter is they did just that. If people are talking about TNA, and regardless of how negatively they talk about the company or how positively they talk about it, they’re still talking about it and in order to bash, and I’m not with TNA so I could care less about trying to be political, but in order to bash TNA, you have to watch TNA. So, as long as you are watching, I guess that’s all that really matters. I mean, people complain all the time; People complain about Monday Night RAW all the time, but guess what, in order to complain they have to watch. SO, as long as you’re watching, Vince McMahon will say ‘I’m going to feed you what you want and you’re going to like it.’ And he said that on TV, and guess what; people keep coming back. So, it is what it is on that issue.”

His WrestleMania match with the New Breed vs the ECW Originals: “I remember the match, obviously, I can’t forget it because it was my first WrestleMania appearance; I did appear at WrestleMania 24, but that was in the battle royale they happened to put on the pre-show and I believe that was going to be a part of the pay per view itself, to have the winner face the (ECW) Champion, which was Chavo Guerrero at the time. But I hate to say that match doesn’t matter, work wise the match means a lot because it was WrestleMania nut we didn’t get a chance to do what we wanted to do or even have time to do anything with 8 guys. But it’s the match that happened on ECW following WrestleMania, on ECW’s telecast, where we had the Extreme Rules match, you know the Old School vs the New Breed. It’s that match that I think all of us are really, really proud of, everybody that participated in that match. I mean, that was when Sabu took the head first through the table from the Elijah Express and tore his neck up. But I think that’s the match we are all proud of because we were able to go out, and it was the main event, and truly work the way we wanted to at WrestleMania. So, we were very proud of that, I think. I know I am.

But for all of us to make it on WrestleMania, we’re extremely proud of that because it’s a milestone and it’s everyone’s goal, well it should be everyone’s goal in this business, to appear or be a part of WrestleMania. I don’t care who you are, if you haven’t made a WrestleMania, you haven’t really lived as a wrestler; that’s the ultimate goal.”
