What Led Him To Become An Actor: “When I was forced into retirement and having to come to terms with that, this fell in my lap and it ended up just being, I guess, the next step of what I might do; I’m still not entirely positive, but it’s been a lot of fun so far. And it still taps into those creative juices that I know, I realize now, that I’m going to have to get out one way or the other, whether it’s writing or reading or painting or something like that. Some people are wired where they can crunch numbers or sit in an office; I can’t do that, I just have to get it out some other way. I can stand in a gallery all day and look at things or just hike a mountain or something like that, but I cant, I can’t sit in an enclosed space for too long.”

His Acting Career & Upcoming Neck Surgery: “You know, the acting thing was never my intent at all. I never saw myself doing anything, wrestling was kind of it for me. Through the years, WWE would say, ‘Hey, what about this?’ and I’d say ‘Ok, sure. Yeah, I’ll do it, sounds like fun’ but I’m still going to come back to wrestling; it’s not like I’m going to take off for a year and go make movies or anything like that. Even when I did shoot that WWE movie, I still maintained the wrestling schedule. So, it was never my goal or anything like that but then when faced with retirement, I was like ‘Ok, well, this has once again fallen into my lap. I guess I’ll give this a shot. Worth a try’ Going forward, right now, Haven is the only think on the docket.”

“But I have to get neck surgery, again, in November. I’d been putting that off since I retired just because something would come up, like the Hall of Fame. I don’t want to sit on my butt for four months in a neck collar and then show up on stage and have people go ‘Woah, retirement hasn’t been good to him.’ And then, from there it was ‘Ok, Haven was starting to shoot again and I need four months to recover from the surgery,” so I just haven’t had enough time yet to get the surgery done. So I was like, ok, the season has wrapped; I’ll do the promotional stuff and a few appearances here and there and then November 8th is the surgery and I thought I’ll just concentrate on that, getting healthy and then go from there.”

His Iconic TLC match at Wrestlemania X-7 with the Hardy’s and Dudley’s: “At Wrestlemania 16, we actually won the Tag Team Championships for the first time, so that one really sticks out for me, because there had been talk about breaking us up as a tag team and we thought we had so much to offer as a team, and it would have been a waste to not let us do our thing. Up until that point, we’d never even really talked on camera because no one thought we could. We knew what we could do; we knew we were just a couple of morons and you give us a mic and man, we’re going to have some fun with it. So, thankfully, at Wrestlemania 16, we got the chance to do that.”

“Fast forward a year later, to Wrestlemania 17 and it was like ‘Ok, there’s some pretty good matches here’. We had Rock/Austin, Undertaker/ Triple H, Shane/Vince , I mean it was a pretty stacked card and we were really proud of the fact that one of the main events of that show was the Hardy’s, the Dudley’s and Edge and Christian. We knew we were doing something different and we had to come through and had to deliver; we knew we could do something that no one else was doing. I do remember that night though; we got to the back and were like ‘Man, the crowd wasn’t that great, huh? I don’t know; they just weren’t there like we thought.’ We’d done some ridiculous spots; not realizing, up until that point we’d never worked a crowd of that size or a dome for that matter, so the sound goes straight up; it doesn’t come at you like it does in an arena. So, that was an adjustment because we watched it back and we were like ‘Oh, the crowd was going nuts; we just couldn’t hear it.’ So that was pretty interesting.”

Who came up with the idea of the ‘Five Second Pose’ gimmick: “I wish, I wish I could tell you whose exact idea. I do know that Jay (Christian), myself and Brian Gewirtz (now Head Writer of RAW) would all sit down and we would just bounce ridiculous things off the wall to see what would stick; whether it was words or you know. The genesis of it started when I remember saying ‘I don’t want to come through the crowd anymore. I think that whole Goth, mysterious thing; we aren’t that anymore. We should be cocky; we should not want the audience to touch us.’ So, that was the genesis of that whole thing and then it became: ‘Ok, we’ll still give you fans something; we’ll let you take our picture for five seconds.’ That’s kind of where that all was born, but the three of us would just sit around and say ‘What about rediculosity? That could work, huh? What about toolshed? Those are good words. How about Reeking of Awesomeness?’ If it made us laugh, it stuck.”

Hugging Kane on Smackdown: “We’ve have (had some hellacious feuds) and outside the ring, he’s one of my close friends, so the idea I could hug him on national TV and he really has no choice in the matter really tickled my funny bone. I loved the idea because I know, inside, he’s going ‘Oh my God’ and I’m loving that fact because I pitched the idea so I was like ‘Ok, I wanna do …. I want to hug those guys’ and they went ‘Oh, ok. Sure.’ And Daniel Bryan is one of my favorite guys too so I figured if I could interact with these two, and do something just fun. I don’t want come back and do these serious, angry promos; there’s no pay off. So, you know, if I could be involved in a fun moment and something that kids can have fun with and people are going to get a kick out of. I get a kick out of too; I get all fired up and kind of make stuff up while I’m out there. That’s always fun for me too is to try and get them to break; a lot of the things I said, they didn’t know I was going to say. That’s always fun, to see if I can get the big fella to smile. And then, I really enjoy Damien Sandow; I really like what he’s doing. So I thought this is cool, this is awesome; I can further something, I can be there and help further something along, it helps Haven. Everybody wins.”

Kelly Kelly’s Asking Price To Appear At Independent Shows

37

Rob Feinstein of RF Video, who coordinates wrestler appearances at trade shows, posted a lengthy blog on his Facebook page detailing his recent negotiations for the former Kelly Kelly, Barbie Blank, to appear at next month’s “Legends of the Ring” convention in Monroe, New Jersey. The former Diva’s agent verbally agreed to a deal six weeks ago, but it fell through Friday after Feinstein was informed that her asking price to appear at independent events had increased to $10,000.

Feinstein writes, “I make it a rule to NEVER bury anyone in the wrestling business publicly if a deal goes wrong. Well in this case I want to inform anybody who might be a fan of Barbie Banks (FKA Kelly Kelly) on how her manager conducts business. To say I am pissed is a understatement. This is no way reflect Barbie Banks FKA Kelly Kelly.

“About 6 weeks ago we struck a verbal deal to bring her into Legends of the Ring. We were told by her manger that she was going to be able to do outside projects while she was still under WWE contract. It really made no sense but she told me that she was in the progress of getting her a new deal that would allow this. She told me that we had a done deal and we agreed on terms. We just never signed a deal because she wanted to wait until she got a new contract which I was told would be a week.

“A week went by and than I was told that because of the holiday labor day I would have to wait another week. When that week passed I was told that Barbie had to do something personal and we would have to wait another week to see if she was medically cleared to make it to our show. To me that is when things got fishy. I informed her manager that two weeks ago you told me we had a deal and we were just waiting for the paper work to go thru. Now things seemed fishy. Well later that week I was informed that she was not going to be able to make it because WWE at the time was not giving her another contract. Honestly none of this made sense to me but I thought that maybe it was true because I have heard she was trying to get a new deal to do outside projects.

“So after 3 weeks or so of being put on hold finally her agent told me the deal was dead and we would have to wait until March to book her. We left everything on great terms even though I was pissed for being put thru the windmill for 3 weeks.

“I went out and booked Shane Helms instead which is great.

“On Friday I get a call from her agent again out of the blue asking me if its to late to book Kelly for Legends of the Ring and now she was able to do it. I told her I only had two weeks now to promote this and I wanted a better rate. I also had to talk to the promoter of Legends of the Ring and get his approval since I once already told him I had her and than had to tell him I lost her. I called up James who is always professional and told him that I could get her again and that I would feel more comfortable if he talked to her agent with me to confirm everything.

“We had a three way call and we came to terms on money, the times and everything. All we needed to do was sign off on the deal. She than asked me for the address of the venue and the times and everything you would put into a contract. I told her I would sign it as soon as I looked it over and we agreed on the phone I would be able to announce this today.

“A hour after we talked I was informed by the agent that someone called with in the hour that we struck our deal and offered Kelly more money that weekend for another event. She than basically tried to hold me up for more money asking well cant I match the deal and I told her no way we already verbally comitted to a deal.

“The professional thing to do here was to tell the other party you already stuck a deal for that date and you would work with them in the future. That is how you conduct proper business in wrestling. A deal is a deal and especially in this business you stick to your word.

“She than told me she had to talk to Barbie and she would call me back. Well with in 4 minutes I got a text no call…..just a text saying that she talked to Barbie and that Barbie decided to go with the other guy. It was obvious she never talked to her as many people in that circle told me that it was so wrong to do. I also want to point out that I had given her at least 10 other dates at the time. For the record her asking price is 10k a shot…you do the match….We had alot of money on the table over the next 7 months with her.

“I informed James of the situation and to say he was not happy was a understatement. James texted her and tried to get her to call him but she refused saying that we never had a deal which was a total lie.

“We had a deal, we agreed and everything was set. Like I said in wrestling when you verbally committ and tell someone your drawing up a contract its a deal. I told her agent that I have worked with everyone from the Rock which I had at my store before, to every big name in the business and that this was a first. Of course she did not reply and I just wanted to let everyone know that because of this the fans of her will not be getting to meet her at the upcoming legends convention.

“I will never work with her agent again unless she gives us the proper apology and does business the right way.

“I never like to work with agents in wrestling for this reason. They do not understand the wrestling business and usually end up costing their clients money, in this case ALOT of money.

“I was not going to pay her full price because we had a deal set because of all the dates but now that is all off the table. So if you book her beware of what your getting yourself into.

“Again this does not reflect on Barbie just the person taking her bookings.”

Randy Orton Injury Angle Held Following SmackDown, WWE To Release “Paul Heyman Guy” T-Shirt

21

– After Big Show defeated Randy Orton on SmackDown and hit him with the WMD, Alberto Del Rio took advantage of the situation by assaulting The Viper. The two-time champion battered Orton as a measure of revenge after being on the receiving end of an RKO earlier in the night. Video of the attack has been posted on WWE.com.

The official WWE website suggests Orton will be sidelined, stating: “While the extent of Orton’s injuries is unknown and it appears he may have lost more than just the No. 1 Contender’s Match, the WWE Universe is well aware that WWE’s Apex Predator is rarely down for long.”

The angle will likely be used to explain Orton’s absence from WWE programming while he films scenes for “12 Rounds: Reloaded” in Vancouver. Though he will be busy filming through at least the end of October, the multi-time champion will continue to appear at SmackDown tapings in the meantime. He is not scheduled for next Tuesday’s show in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but will resume appearing at the following week’s event in San Jose, California.

– WWE has plans to release a Paul Heyman T-Shirt featuring the tagline, “I’m A Paul Heyman Guy.” The tagline stems from CM Punk referencing himself as a “Paul Heyman guy” during his infamous speech last year chastising WWE brass. To vote on three potential designs, click here.

Jim Ross On How WWE Creates A “Mega Star”, Michael Cole’s Responsibilities, Jerry Lawler’s Health

7

In his latest blog posting, Jim Ross discusses WWE’s uneasy process of building a new “mega star.”

“How to build a new WWE mega star? It’s obviously not easy and takes a combined effort from many areas but getting said talent on a roll is a significant part of the process,” Ross wrote. “Taking a few chances along the way is usually necessary as does steering the course with the earmarked talent who must be motivated, smart, and hard working. Ironically, some talents don’t want the responsibility that comes with being one of the “top talents” as it isn’t an easy assignment and only gets more challenging the more popular the talent becomes.

“Plus, the talent has to have the elusive “it” factor which cannot be manufactured in my opinion.”

During Monday’s Raw, Michael Cole interviewed WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler via satellite to get the latest on his condition following his heart attack. Ross released the latest update on “The King.”

Happy to say that @Jerry Lawler is feeling better each day. We communicated via text message during the Browns loss to the Ravens Thursday night. Jerry actually is making an appearance at an event near Memphis but obviously is not wrestling or being involved in any physicality. Apparently it is an autograph engagement of some sort. I’ve not heard a definitive return date for Jerry to come back to Raw commentary and the travel that goes with it. I suspect it will still be a while before his doctor’s clear him for that job and all that goes with it.

Ross also notes that Michael Cole has many more responsibilities as the lead announcer on Raw than he ever did.

“All the social media info, etc wasn’t around when King and I were in our heyday. Michael stays highly organized with a multitude of information that he is obligated to distribute during any given Monday night broadcast,” Ross wrote. “Michael’s role now on Raw and mine back in the day, even though we were both ‘lead announcers,’ are drastically different. Unless one does prep work with Cole, you just doesn’t know how good a job he does especially with SO much on his plate.”

Ross also comments on an NFL broadcaster using the term “Slobber Knocker” during a game Thursday, WWE’s tryout camp today, one of his tweets being acknowledged by ABC News, and more. The full post is available here.

True Long Island Story, Zack Ryder appears in a “dream sequence” as he blames himself for his bad year thus far after being advised to “reach for the brass ring.” He teases making changes to the show as well as his character to prove he can be more than just an “Internet Champion” as well as a “gimmick.”

– Ohio Valley Wrestling announcer and manager Kenny Bolin announced Wednesday that it would be his last day working for the promotion for the foreseeable future due to personal issues in his life. Bolin released the following statement Friday thanking fans and colleagues for their support.

“I do want to thank all the fans, wrestlers and Staff at OVW last night for really making me feel like a KING ! i have never felt so special and loved in all my life. I have been inducted into the OVW hall of fame which only has 5 members but when Danny Davis, AL Snow, Frank Miller and my Long time Broadcast partner Dean Hill voted to have the world wide known “Gorilla Position” renamed the “Bolin Position” (the entrance area near the curtain) at Davis arena and all OVW shows from this day forward. I nearly broke down when Dean presented me with this honor at the End of the TV taping. the be mentioned in the same breath as Gorilla Monsoon is more than i could ever live up to. i could have never expected such a tribute to my name while i was still living. this was better than having a park named after me in La Grange Ky. “hint, hint” LOL I love you all at OVW and my friends and fans and i truly hope i get to return one day. OVW will always be a part of my life!
Kenny Bolin.”

MAILBAG: How Many REAL Superstars Does WWE Have?

36

SEScoops Mailbag for September 28th

(please submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: How does the developmental talent in [NXT] survive on the low salary they receive and are they able to work outside of WWE whether having a regular job or doing indie shows? – Jimmy H.

A: They make it work because it’s their passion. It’s no different than minor league baseball players, who often live off lower wages with the hope they will one day make it to the big leagues. If you want something bad enough, you do whatever it takes. But it’s not as if these guys are living off table scraps. I believe some may have jobs outside of wrestling, but they are not allowed to do independent shows.

Q: Since Raw and SmackDown pretty much share the same roster, does it seem plausible that WWE would turn the Draft into [one] that sees [each brand] picking NXT stars to move up to the main roster? – CJ Carter

A: Plausible, no. I don’t see WWE doing it. They would rather build each person up with their own unique character or storyline. But if they ever wanted to take things in a more sports-like direction, I think this would be a hell of an idea. The two flaws in this plan is that there are a finite number of NXT stars they can choose to move at any given time without depleting their developmental roster, and you aren’t going to have that many guys who are truly ready to make that jump to the main roster at the same time. I think each brand choosing 3 NXT talents would work.

Q: In your opinion, what are the “stiffest” WWE matches ever? – Robert G.

A: It depends on your definition of “stiff” matches. Wrestlers get “potatoed” in matches all the time, but I don’t know that you’d call that stiff. Are we talking shoots? You won’t find too many of those in WWE aside from those Brawl For All matches back in 1998, which saw a bunch of guys get injured as a result. Daniel Puder, the former Tough Enough winner, took a stiff ass kicking at the start of the 2005 Royal Rumble match to the point where it was uncomfortable to watch. Of course, John Cena took a beating from Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules earlier this year, which included an elbow to the head that opened him up hardway.

Q: I don’t know if it’s just me, but WWE is lacking [star power]. The Cena/Punk feud seems to get more drawn out as time goes on. I’m not saying that upcoming stars like Ryback or Damien Sandow should get the strap right away, but WWE just seems stale. The segments involving Kane [and Daniel] Bryan are boring. I honestly believe WWE is drowning due to lack of “Superstars”. Punk is a great heel champion, but the loss of Chris Jericho put a damper on things. Even though Jericho didn’t have a title, he has that Superstar quality most of the wrestlers are lacking. Am I wrong? If not, when do you think things will start to pick up? – Eric from Berlin, CT

A: Without a doubt, WWE is lacking in star power. In fact, never in its history has it been so thin on true Superstars, as you might say. In the last few years alone, they’ve lost Shawn Michaels, Batista and Edge with Chris Jericho, Triple H and Undertaker playing part-time roles at best. They went through a period for several years after dumping OVW as a developmental territory where they simply were not churning out the type of talent they had years earlier and it’s recently come back to bite them on the ass. NXT is now stocked with loads of talented guys who can be big stars tomorrow, what about today? That is the problem WWE is now faced with. Cena remains their biggest star and the closest thing to a mainstream celebrity that they have. Guys like Punk and Bryan are great, but people don’t necessarily see them as “big” stars, which is why they rely so heavily on bringing back guys like Rock and Brock Lesnar to boost PPV buys. It’s going to take time to find those next big stars, but I do think it will happen at some point.

Q: Do you have any idea where the whole GTV angle was going? I remember it lasting about 4 weeks or so. The only segment I remember was the one with Stephanie McMahon and Test. – Derek Fox

A: Goldust was supposed to be revealed as the person behind GTV at some point. As with other angles over the years, it was dropped without explanation. So I guess it was really just some random pervert who got tired of peeping on everyone. The disturbing part is that he (she?) is still out there.

Q: My question is regarding Linda McMahon’s senate run. Will she win or vice versa? If she loses will she go for it again? If she wins/lose will WWE become more edgier or more like Disney channel? – Dez

A: Yes, I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Linda will indeed “win, or vice versa” in this election. It will be one or the other. But in the end, I think she will fall short again, and when she does, don’t expect WWE to suddenly allow swearing and blood on its programming again. People hoping for a Linda defeat so that WWE will end the PG era are in for a rude awakening.

Q: Do you think WWE will ever get out of this PG Era? – Jesse W.

A: Make it stop.

Triple H Talks About Working With Full Sail University For WWE NXT (Videos)

5

WWE Executive Vice President of Talent and Live Events Triple H recently spoke with the Miami Herald about the NXT tapings at Full Sail University in Florida. Here are some highlights of what Triple H said about:

Why They Chose Full Sail for NXT: “We did some events here. We turned them into TV. We got the idea to do the show here. The show took off. We didn’t want to have no value for tickets, so we started charging a little for tickets. Then it was like, ‘You know what. Let’s take that money and give it back to the school. Let’s make a scholarship fund and give it to the students.’”

“We have our developmental as it exists now in Tampa, and the television experience there was very small. It just aired in Central Florida. I wanted to bring it into that facility [Full Sail Live] with the ability for [WWE NXT superstars and divas] to learn how to do WWE television — even if it’s on a smaller level but on the same professional platform. When I saw this facility, my visionary, Spidey senses went off, and I said, ‘This is exactly what I was looking for.’ We started to explore it further and brought some execs in to look at it and started to think about it some more and started to hash out this idea about potentially putting on a show here, and we did. We put on a show.”

“Then I started to think, I can take NXT off the road and turn that into developmental because that show wasn’t doing anything, but it was sold internationally. It can open up some time for us on the road to shoot a different show; same point and time I can shoot a really good quality show out of here and take these kids, instead of then learning out of a two-camera warehouse shoot that went no where, I can teach them on a four or five or six camera shoot with real live TV production on a smaller but same platform WWE does everywhere.”

Working With FSU Students: “We have our exec team coming down here and lecturing their students quarterly. Our marketing people come down to talk about marketing. Our digital people come down and discuss digital strategies and social media initiatives. We give them real world corporate vision and experience they can’t get anywhere else. It’s a really great working opportunity, and this place is like a huge think tank for WWE in a way. So it’s a win-win for everybody.”

NXT Possibly Airing In The US: “Certainly. When I say we’re scratching the surface, there’s a lot of things potentially. Could we do other shows here? ‘Yeah, they have studio facilities all over this campus. They’ve got green screen facilities. Right now we’re working with them at Full Sail Live, producing a show out of here that goes internationally — hopefully soon domestically; that’s a spoiler — but there are so many other things that we can very easily begin to do out of Full Sail that synergistically works for us and works for them.”
