CM Punk Appearing On Popular TV Show, Maddox a “Triple H Guy” & More

36

– WWE Main Event has been averaging around 1.46 million viewers and a 0.9 rating since its premiere on Ion, which is better than TNA Impact Wrestling draws on Spike TV.

– WWE referee-turned-wrestler Brad Maddox is considered Triple H’s latest project. Maddox was not seen as having major potential while training as a wrestler at WWE developmental, but there’s a strong chance he’ll (somehow) win his match with Ryback on RAW and earn his contract.

– WWE Champion CM Punk has apparently made a deal to appear on a very popular television show. Punk appeared on Colt Cabana’s Art Of Wrestling podcast last week and said that he can’t reveal which show he’ll be appearing on for a few weeks and still has to clear it with WWE, but thinks WWE would have selected another superstar for the acting gig if it had gone through them originally.

Wade Barrett & William Regal Talk WM30, Why Fans Love WWE

10

WWE Superstars Wade Barrett and William Regal spoke to DigitalSpy.com to promote WWE’s ongoing UK tour. Here are some highlights of what they said about:

Is it harder to get the big chances and big title bouts as an Englishman?

Regal: “I don’t think it’s any harder than for anyone else once you get yourself over there. Getting over there is the hard thing. If you’ve got the talent it’ll shine through. I went over there when there was no-one there. It was difficult. But I think it helps if anything, just to be English, just to be a bit different. It definitely helped me. I was the only English character at the time. Obviously there was the Bulldog, but he was his own entity – he was a completely different thing away from what I was doing. It gave me a bit of a boost really.”

Barrett: “I think increasingly WWE is a global company – as much as they can they want to push out into new markets like Europe. I think it’s definitely been a help in a sense that I’m English. But again it’s ultimately down to talent. Being English helped me get a foot in the door, but ultimately it’s down to my talent and hard work in trying to get to that top level.”

What would you love to do or see at WrestleMania XXX in 2014?

Barrett: “Personally I’d love to be in one of the title matches. Obviously we’ve got two main titles in WWE – the World Heavyweight Championship and the WWE Title. We’ve never had an English winner of those. In my opinion we should have had the British Bulldog as World Champion. Mr Regal next to me should have been a World Champion. It has never quite never happened for Mr Regal yet, although it still could.”

Regal: “Don’t hold your breath.”

Barrett: “I’d love to be the first English World Champion. When you look at the history of English professional wrestling and all the things that have gone on in the past, going back decades, it’s incredible we’ve never had a recognized World Champion here. I think that needs to change and obviously I’d love to be the first one.”

Regal: “I’m just happy being there at WrestleMania. I’ve never had a big role at any WrestleMania, but I’ve been at 11-odd. Just to be there is special. The week beforehand and all the promotions and stuff. I don’t really think about the big events, being in them any more. I’m 44, so it’s my autumn years of my career, so I’m just happy to be there to be honest. What I’d like to see? It’d be nice to see Wade and Sheamus in a main event. It’d be nice to see Daniel Bryan in a main event, just because of the time I’ve spent with him in the last 12 years.”

What is it that people have always loved about the WWE?

Regal: “People from the beginning of time have always loved to watch two people in competition with each other. You go back to the gladiatorial shows, there’s just something about it. You can go into a village in the world where they’ve never seen wrestlers, two young boys will be rolling around in headlocks. It’s just a natural thing to do and to watch and that basically captures people’s imaginations. A lot of the time they can’t do it themselves but they like to see other people doing it. If it’s packaged in the right way they’ll come to watch… there’s just something about the whole spectacle.”

Barrett: “For me personally, when I was 10 years old, I remember watching it and just being attracted to the fact that these were real-life cartoon characters. It sounds a bit of a cliché to say it. I think it was only when I was about 19 years old when I read a book by Mick Foley, his first book Have a Nice Day, and it kind of deconstructed the whole story of pro-wrestling to me – what happens behind the scenes.

“It was only at that age that it kind of clicked for me that these were real-life human beings who grew up with regular families, who came up and decided they wanted to do that. That was really the trigger for me to decide that I wanted to do that too. When I was a kid it was just like watching a real-life cartoon with these crazy characters and that’s what drew me in at first. The longer I stuck with it the more aspects of it I discovered and the more I liked, and I ended up here.”

CM Punk Comments On The End Of WWE’s PG Era, WWE ’13 Sales, UK Tour Ticket Sales

27

– Ticket sales for WWE’s current tour of the UK have been disappointing. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that none of the shows are selling out and ticket prices are being slashed to help fill the arenas.

– Early in-store sales for WWE ’13 have been strong, especially with 20% of of retail stores closed last week due to Hurricane Sandy. As previously reported, pre-orders for the game were also very strong.

– In response to fans hoping to see the end of WWE’s PG era now that Linda McMahon lost her Senate campaign, WWE Champion CM Punk tweeted the following message:

Jim Ross Checks In From WWE’s UK Tryout Camp, Punk Serving As Grand Marshall Of Thanksgiving Parade

3

– As previously reported, WWE Champion CM Punk will be participating in Chicago’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. We’ve now received word that Punk will servce as the parade’s Grand Marshall.

– WrestleMania 29 tickets went on pre-sale this morning. Tickets go on sale to the public this weekend.

– After the first WrestleMania 29 promotional came out and featured The Rock, Brock Lesnar and John Cena, additional promotional material that’s been released since then features the same 3 wrestlers.

View Here: First WrestleMania 29 PPV Poster

– In response to this weekend’s WrestleMania 29 ticket launch, SmackDown star Wade Barrett is telling his fans on Twitter that WWE should bring SummerSlam back to Wembley Stadium, which hosted hte event back in 1992:

“Wrestlemania 29 tickets go on sale this Saturday and I’ve no doubt that the Brits will again make up a disproportionately large % of sales. After showing that they are the best fans on the planet this week in Brum, I think it’s about time Summerslam made a return to Wembley. There is no place in the world i’d rather beat Sheamus than over the centre-circle of the greatest stadium in the world.”

Adding more fuel to the fire, Wade Barrett selected this week’s WWE Classics “Five-Star Match of the Week” and picked (you guessed it..) Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog from SummerSlam 92. Barrett commented told WWE.com:

“[The Bulldog] was from just down the road from me, near Wigan. I’m from Preston, very close. He was my idol as a kid, so this was a great moment and great to have a pay-per-view like SummerSlam in the U.K. I hope we get that again one day.”

John “Bradshaw” Layfield Announces Full Time Return To WWE As Color Commentator

16

John “Bradshaw” Layfield announced Wednesday on Facebook that he has signed a contract with WWE to appear as a commentator on a full-time basis. He had been sporadically filling in as color commentator after Jerry “The King” Lawler suffered a heart attack during the Raw episode preceding Night of Champions. He is now the commentator for SmackDown with Josh Mathews, replacing Michael Cole.

He wrote, “Very happy WWE and I have worked out a deal for me to return on a full time basis. There came a need when my friend Jerry Lawler had a heart attack and was not able to work, however, I realized how much I enjoyed being back and this was the basis for my decision to return.

“I now just enjoy doing commentary, and no, have no desire to ever be in the ring again. I am in the best shape I have probably ever been in due to the mountain training, but a twisted knee, ankle or back and I lose my dream of the Seven Summits-not worth the risk to me and I had my time and I loved it. Commentary is where I want to be.

“I will doing Smackdown with Josh Matthews. I have filled in on Main Event some but mainly when Miz has a large part in the show and can’t do commentary.

“Raw is 100% Jerry’s. He and Michael are a great team, I enjoy listening to Jerry and there are no plans for a three man booth with me in it. I am happy on Smackdown.

“It looks like I will be doing PPVs as a representative for the Smackdown brand as part of a three man booth with Cole and King.

“I cannot say enough how impressed I am with Michael Cole, there is so much more to the commentary game now and he is the best I have seen. Josh prepares well and we don’t have the sync that Michael and I have yet, but we will get there. Josh is fun to work with, I love when I get him so frustrated he throws his hands up in the air not knowing what I will say next. Michael and I had a year of commentary behind us already when I returned, Josh and I have only been doing it for a short time.

“I don’t know where Josh buys those horrible sweaters and gets that spiky haircut though.

“And yes, I do have fun ribbing my old boss and Okie friend JR. It’s all in good fun.”

Report On Why WWE Overhauled Survivor Series Main Event On Monday’s Raw

35

As seen Monday on Raw, WWE overhauled its plans for Survivor Series on November 18, 2012.

On the show, Vince McMahon mandated that CM Punk will defend his WWE Championship in a Triple Threat Match against Ryback and John Cena at the pay-per-view event. With this turn of events, Team Punk is now known as Team Ziggler, while Team Foley has an empty fifth slot. Prior to the change, The Miz quit the group in protest of Punk’s leadership, and was replaced by Wade Barrett after Paul Heyman aggressively sought him.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE changed their plans for multiple reasons. Among them was the belief that the originally scheduled main event, Team Punk vs. Team Foley in Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Tag Team Match, would draw dismal pay-per-view buy numbers. With rare exceptions, tag team matches as main events are generally mediocre earners on pay-per-view. The entire Bragging Rights concept was dropped for that very reason.

What also swayed plans for Survivor Series were the pay-per-view buy figures for Hell in a Cell on DirecTV being “surprisingly strong.” Privately, McMahon credited Ryback for the result and felt placing him in a ten-man tag team match, even though he would likely be left standing, would not be beneficial to him. McMahon feels they need to capitalize on Ryback’s momentum, which would require the muscle-bound grappler to challenge for the WWE Championship in the main event.

Booker T Recalls Giving Batista A “Pretty Good Beating” During 2006 Fist Fight On Set Of WWE Commercial Shoot

28

Speaking to Fighting Spirit Magazine (available at FightingSpiritMagazine.co.uk), Booker T recalled his physical altercation with Batista on May 8, 2006 at a commercial photo shoot in Encino, California for that year’s SummerSlam pay-per-view event.

Batista, who rose to main event status in a relatively short period of time, was already unpopular within the locker room due to his lack of respect for those who came before him coupled with a sense of entitlement. That day, Booker T took issue with The Animal’s poor demeanor.

According to eyewitness reports, Booker T challenged Batista to “[go] into an empty room and go for it.” The two fought for approximately five minutes in the room, with Booker T dominating the muscle-bound wrestler. After the two were separated by fellow wrestlers, Batista snuck in one last sucker punch on Booker T just as he did immediately after the decorated wrestler closed the door to signal the start of fray.

Finlay, who was among the wrestlers who broke up the brawl, said during an earlier interview with the publication that the story was blown out of proportion. Booker T disagreed with his assessment.

“It wasn’t blown out of proportion. He took a pretty good beating,” said the SmackDown General Manager.

“The thing is, when you’re in a fight, it’s different from an MMA fight. That’s the thing with me. I’ve fought my whole life. You don’t just call a person out to a fight if you don’t know their background, what they’ve been through, and how to test them. That was his mistake, and I think it was definitely a case of him underestimating me, and thinking he was the bigger guy. For me fighting is in the blood, and it’s something I grew up doing. Honestly though, I hope Batista does well (in MMA), even just for the business’ sake.”

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper Slams Linda McMahon For Spending $90 Million To Lose Two U.S. Senate Elections

32

Linda McMahon, former president and CEO of WWE, failed in her bid for a Senate seat in Connecticut, losing to Democratic Rep. Chris Murphy on Tuesday. This follows her 2010 loss to Richard Blumenthal in the race for the state’s other seat in the Senate.

The total cost of losing two elections has ranged from $90 to $97 million, according to estimates. McMahon spent $50 million of her personal fortune in her failed 2010 campaign, and is believed to have spent $40 to $47 million the second time around. Between both campaigns, McMahon has now spent a cumulative total of over $90 million in pursuit of federal office. That is more than any other American in history.

WWE Hall of Famer “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, who worked under the employ of McMahon, criticized her exorbitant spending on two failed Senate campaigns in a series of Twitter messages Wednesday. After asking his followers whether McMahon won her race, he wrote, “Can spend 90 million on a losing election but won’t give the people that earned that money for them medical or retirement help of any kind!”

Piper then re-tweeted a message comparing her failed Senate campaigns to another McMahon family outside-the-ring venture that went bust; the World Bodybuilding Federation: “It’s like the WBF all over again; money spent on alternate endeavors earned from the blood & sweat of the boys.”

Continuing to stick up for “the boys,” while also corroborating a rumor that mid-level WWE talent had to cover their hotel and travel expenses during WrestleMania XXVIII week in Miami, Florida despite the sports-entertainment organization generating a record-breaking $102.7 million in economic impact for Miami-Dade County, he also re-tweeted, “They can spend 90 mill on elections but still make midcarders pay their and their family own way for wrestlemania. crazy.”

CM Punk’s Historic WWE Title Reign, Edge’s Neck Surgery & More

22

– WWE Hall of Famer Edge will undergo another neck surgery on Thursday. Edge was asked by a fan on Twitter if this procedure will allow him to wrestle again one day, but the Rated R Superstar shot down those hopes:

– WWE CFO George Barrios is featured in Forefront Magazine and named his parents and Vince McMahon as his role models. He stated that Vince behaves “as if every day is the first day on the job.”

– WWE Champion CM Punk is quickly approaching the 1-year mark for his title reign. If Punk successfully retains the WWE title at Survivor Series on 11/19, the following day will mark one year for him as champion. Punk would be the first person to hold the WWE Championship for a full year since John Cena back in 2006.

If CM Punk is able to keep the title past November 26th, he will surpass Randy Savage’s 371 day title reign (1988-1989). If he can remain champion past December 5th, he will surpass John Cena’s 380 day title rein – making him the longest reigning WWE Champion since Hulk Hogan’s 1984-1988 reign.

JBL Tells A Backstage Story Of His First Push Being Killed By A Bad Referee Call

10

WWE announcer JBL has posted a new blog entry at Facebook.com with a backstage story from his first WWE Survivor Series back in 1996. JBL competed in a traditional team elimination match on the “Free For All” pre-show and was eliminated from the match earlier than he was supposed to be due to a botched call from referee Tim White.

JBL wrote on Tuesday:

“My first Survivor Series my team was to go over and it was to be my first big push. It was one of first times refs used ear pieces, or at least, different ear pieces. So, I do a ‘false finish’ and Tim White counts me out! I had kicked out on ‘2,’ but Tim was listening to someone in his ear and wasn’t paying attention. He looked up and said, ‘Oh my God, kid, I am so sorry,’ but then had to pantomine he was sending me out of ring.”

“I got to the back and was chewed out, I couldn’t stooge Tim so I just took it-later they realized Tim made a mistake and told me they were sorry. It was my pal Gerald Brisco that had chewed me out as he ran ‘Gorilla’ back then. My push was killed and pretty much so was ‘Justin Hawk Bradshaw,’ but that is a different story-which I’ll tell later. I thought about this today as I was reading some tweets from folks about Survivor Series.”

Here’s a video clip of the spot JBL is talking about. The botched call takes place around the 10:45 mark – and you can hear Vince McMahon and Jim Ross caught off guard by the early elimination of “Justin Hawk Bradshaw” –
