Mark Henry On The Locker Room’s Reaction To The Rock, Retirement, His Dream Opponent

9

WWE superstar Mark Henry was interviewed Power 92.3 in Little Rock, Arkansas to promote Tuesday’s Smackdown tapings. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

The WWE Locker Room’s Reaction To The Rock:

“Rock is a great talent, but nobody’s taking pictures and asking for autographs. He’s a wonderful talent, he’s one of us, we respect him [and] he respects what we do. We just go about it and try to take advantage of the situation. He’s one of those that’s recognizable in many realms, and we appreciate him for coming back and still loving what we do and doing what he calls home.”

When He Plans On Retiring From WWE:

“When I retire there’s a lot of stuff I’m gonna do. [Right now] It’s all about wrestling, it’s all about performing, doing what I do best. [It’s about] extending my legacy and making it to when I look back I can’t say I didn’t do enough, I didn’t put in my due diligence… I’m enjoying it and reaping the benefits from it as well, but there’s gonna come a time when the wheels on the bus are gonna stop rolling.”

Another World Title Run & Sunday’s Elimination Chamber Match:

“I see one. I don’t think that there’s any question. No guy in there [Elimination Chamber] is gonna beat me. That’s just the way it is.”

Who He Would Wrestle If He Could Face Anybody From Any Era:

“I would have loved to have faced Andre The Giant or Hulk Hogan. Maybe Ernie Ladd… Gorgeous George. It’s a few guys that I go back and I look at their legacies and they never faced nobody like me. It’s not only a challenge for them, but it’s a challenge for me. I would have to put aside that I idolized them and do what I have to do.”

Tommy Dreamer Talks About His First Time Working MSG & WrestleMania

3

ECW original Tommy Dreamer was interviewed by Kayfabe Wrestling Radio this week. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

His first WWF/WWWF event in the New York Area and seeing the “Superfly” moment: “I’m not that old, for the three W’s; come on I’m not that old. No it was the WWF when I went. I’ll actually be 42 tomorrow; tomorrow’s my birthday, thank you. I started watching wrestling when I was 9 years old and my father took me to my first event at the County Center for my birthday; I saw Bob Backlund, he was my favorite and the first wrestler I ever saw. Then, he snubbed me and I went on a long, long tirade of me hating Bob Backlund when he snubbed me for an autograph but we have since made up then. Me, Bubba (Dudley), Mick Foley and I want to say I know Paul Heyman was there, he was shooting ringside; we were all at the show where Jimmy Snuka first climbed to the top of the cage and missed the dive on Bob Backlund and we were all there, it was just us fans and Buibba and I always talk about that. We always talk about special (Madison Square) Garden events that we went to, you know, and no matter what, you still gotta be a fan and that’s what I am. I’m still living my dream and I’m happy to be doing it.”

What it was like to work Madison Square Garden for the first time: “It was a dream come true for me. My first time there, at Madison Square Garden was against Perry Saturn, some I wrestled a bunch of time before and I know this is hard to believe for a lot of my fans, but I actually got a little teary-eyed and I got emotional; it’s still real to me dammit, and it was really, really great. The best two minutes of my career was when I worked the Royal Rumble in Madison Square Garden and I was in the ring with the Undertaker, Shawn Michaels and a bunch of other guys and for two minutes, people just kept chanting my name; I was eliminated in two minutes, but it was the greatest two minutes of my life. I love myself and Rob Van Dam main eventing on Monday Night Raw there, when we unified the Intercontinental and the ECW Title; I cried in the back as well. I cry a lot as you know in my career, and I love this business and I never thought I would achieve my dream and I was really, really happy for those events.”

His WrestleMania experience and the match of ECW against the New Blood: “It was really, really food. I did it with my friends and my family was there, it was a really great experience. Never thought we were all going to make it to WrestleMania but we did. I was at WrestleMania 1 as a kid, so, I mean, it was really, really cool. There’s a lot behind that match going in, and at one point we were actually scrapped from the card. So, I think they did a Diva’s Playboy match, and we had done a test run in Mexico the week before and the match was so good that we were main eventing all the shows in Mexico and then when we got back from Mexico, the match was supposed to be 12 minutes, then it was supposed to be 10 minutes, then 8 minutes, then it was cut from the show, then we had 6 minutes. So, just the fact that it happened with all the behind the scenes BS was a great accomplishment for all of us.”

Bruno Sammartino Talks WWE HOF, His Relationship With Vince McMahon & More

3

Future WWE Hall of Famer Bruno Sammartino spoke to Donald Wood from Bleacher Report and Ring Rust Radio this week. You can listen to the full show at Blogtalkradio.com. Here are some highlights of what Bruno said about:

Q. You’re going into the WWE Hall of fame this year. What took you so long to accept the honor?

A. After I retired, I spent a quarter of a century in the business, and when I retired and a new regime took over, Vince McMahon Jr. and that, and in the beginning I went back to help out. I color commentated with him, but then I started to see things that were disturbing to me. I saw the steroid use in wrestling that became kind of rampant and I saw the changes in wrestling itself with some nudity and some vulgarity going on with different things that they were doing. And the profanity was so much. That bothered the heck out of me, and it bothered me so much that I became very outspoken about it. I hated to see the business that I spent 25 years in take that direction. That’s what really started it all.

When it came to the Hall of Fame, I’ve been very critical of the direction they’ve taken and I’d feel like a hypocrite if I just accepted this Hall of Fame while I’m so against what they’re doing. So all these years have gone by and I have refused every time, but now what happened is that I found out doctor Joseph Maroon, whom I happen to know personally, he’s a world-renowned neurosurgeon—in fact, he’s operated on me three times—but his reputation is awesome. When I found out he took on that challenge to clean up the drug situation there was over there, that made me feel good.

Time went by, and I was contacted by the WWE, which was Paul Levesque—better known as Triple H—when he contacted me, I was curious, wasn’t convinced, but after awhile he started telling me about not only about the drug program and how strict they were, but he started talking about how they were making it more family friendly by doing away with the nudity and vulgarity and the profanity and all that.

About six or seven weeks ago, I started watching it because I had my doubts, to be honest. Meanwhile, Paul kept calling me and talking to me more and more about the whole business and the direction they wanted to go in and so forth, and after watching it and having a meeting with Dr. Maroon who explained time and again what they were doing, as I told some previous people, they said, ‘you’d never go in the Hall of Fame because you’d feel like a hypocrite, but what if they change? What if the whole thing changed? Would you reconsider?’ I would absolutely. If they change, absolutely I would reconsider.

Well they’ve convinced me that they have changed and they convinced me—Paul Levesque has—that they want to be family friendly and the plans to go ahead is to do even more so, and I liked everything he had to say. Putting everything together is what made me want to go in.

Q. I imagine there has been some interaction between you and Mr. McMahon. How would you describe your current relationship with Vince McMahon after years of disagreements, as many wrestling fans know?

A. Well, first of all, I have not talked to Vince McMahon at all. In the past six months that I have been speaking with Paul Levesque, I have never once talked to Vince McMahon. Now, yes, as you said he is the boss, so I feel that from my conversations with Paul Levesque and the agreements we’ve come to and so forth, I do believe he had to speak to Vince, and Vince of course had to agree.

But as far as myself, I will see him for the first time at Madison Square Garden at the Hall of Fame. But I have not talked to him, and as far as I know, there aren’t any plans for us to talk until we meet in person at that time. So when that time comes, we shall meet in person and if he wants to bury the hatchet as the old saying goes, I commend him for the changes that he made. I criticized him before, and I will give him credit because these changes could not have taken place without his approval. So, you know, I have to be fair too here.

So, when I meet him I will shake his hand and I will tell him, ‘Hey, I’m willing to bury the hatchet, I didn’t like what you did before, but I like a lot of what you have done since, so I’m willing to put our past behind us.’

Q. If you could chose anyone to induct you into the Hall of Fame, who would you select?

A. There is a number of people I’d probably select, but to be perfectly honest and fair, I told Paul that if I have my choice and they want me to pick someone that I would, but if they had somebody in mind because the business has changed—from what I understand, they’re like in 126 countries around the world—so I thought maybe they’d want that they feel is known through all of their markets that would be more appropriate, I don’t know. I don’t want to force the issue.

If it were me, there would be a number of names I’d want; that I think would be fitting I should say. It could be [Larry] Zbyszko as you mentioned, could be a Koloff because he’s the one I lost the title to the first time, could be Bill Watts because I certainly have a history with him in this business as well, it could be a good friend of mine that I like very much—we come from the same neck of the woods—and that would be Dominic DeNucci, You know, but if they choose someone that they feel is more appropriate because of their 126 markets around the world and they think they might be more important, then I wouldn’t argue with them. I’d be fine with that too.

As of right now, it has not been determined on who it’s going to be.

WrestleMania 29 Card Update, Jake Roberts Talks Hogan, WWE Inbox, GI Joe Trailer

38

– As noted earlier this week in our “What Happened After RAW” report, The Rock and John Cena had a face-to-face confrontation after the TV broadcast ended, with both men pointing at the WrestleMania 29 sign hanging above the arena. According to WWE sources, the Rock vs. Cena match is one of the matches that’s a lock for April’s big show. Lesnar vs. Triple H is also booked, with Triple H expected to return to WWE television in the weeks ahead to confront Lesnar for putting Vince out of action with an F5. As of this past weekend, The Undertaker’s status for WrestleMania is still unconfirmed. While it’s possible that he does wrestle CM Punk, other plans are already being discussed for Punk’s opponent in the event that the Undertaker takes this year off. One idea was for Punk to be added to the Rock vs. Cena match, making it a triple threat match. It is more likely Punk will get paired up with another main event superstar in an effort to keep him at the top of the card.

– WWE legend Jake Roberts spoke to ESPN980.com this week about never getting a big run with Hulk Hogan, his hatred of Bill Watts and more.

“Cameron and Naomi may have gotten the best of me last night, why don’t either of them take me on one on one? They are scared! Lol I am getting stronger and stronger every day. They should be sweating in their dancing boots.”

“@NaomiWWE it’s time for both of you ladies to be careful! What’s a funkerdactle anyway lol. #Musclemania”

Jim Ross Blog: Olympic Wrestling, Rock vs. Punk 2, Jericho-Bryan, Zeb Colter

5

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR wrote about:

Olympics Eliminating Wrestling: Wrestling being dropped from the Olympic Games by the apparent, out of touch International Olympic Committee, the IOC, is, bottom line, pet coon goofy. It makes absolutely no sense to eliminate the oldest sport in the Olympic Games and to compromise the integrity of the Games for TV ratings and more cash. Many mat dreams were dashed today regarding the IOC’s announcement and hopefully smarter heads will prevail before this mandate is actually ratified.

Rock vs. Punk 2:  @TheRock was entertaining [on RAW] and looked amazing but I never foresaw the physicality coming with @CMPunk. I’ll predict that the two will have a much more crisp, more exciting one on one bout this Sunday in New Orleans than they had in Phoenix at the Royal Rumble and I enjoyed that outing. I’m very anxious to watch it on PPV emanating from one of my all time favorite cities and Mid South Wrestling hub, #NOLA.

Jericho vs. Bryan On RAW: @IAmJericho vs. @WWEDanielBryan lived up to what I was hoping when I heard the match was made. I could watch these two talents go , seemingly, every week, well, at least for several weeks. Another ‘Best of Seven’ candidate. Chris Jericho hasn’t missed a step and is arguably as good right now as he’s ever been. Great move by @WWE in getting Chris back in the ring.

Zeb Colter: @RealJackSwagger getting a ringside representative in Zeb Colter, not to be confused with author Ann Coulter or David Letterman’s version of @HowardFinkel, Allan Coulter, and I like the potential of this paring. I have great confidence that my fellow Oklahoman Swagger will get on a roll and that Zeb may be the missing ingredient that makes Swagger saucey. The Elimination Chamber will be a telling night for the man who is and always will be the 2nd toughest man to hail from Perry, Oklahoma. (Dan Hodge being the first.)

*Spoilers* WWE SmackDown Tapings Results For Friday

43

WWE taped Friday’s episode of SmackDown on Tuesday night from the Verizon Arena in Little Rock, Arkansas. Here are the results:

– The show begins with Big Show coming out for a promo. Big Show asked the crowd if they think it’s funny when Del Rio messed with him, which got a huge pop. Big Show says Del Rio has never pinned him and never will. Chris Jericho interrupted him and said he’s known Big Show for 16 years and can read him like a “big, stinky book.” Big Show told Jericho to get out of here because he should have better things to do. Jericho plugged his Robot Fighting League show and says he’s excited to be back with WWE.

Jericho reminded Big Show that they are former tag team champions together and said it would be interesting if they wound up wrestling each other for the World Heavyweight title at WM29. Big Show said if they both make it to WrestleMania, it will be Jericho’s last one. Booker T came out and announced Big Show vs Jericho for later in the show.

Backstage, Randy Orton and Mark Henry had a confrontation. They’ll wrestle next.

It was advertised that The Rock will be appearing later tonight, which got a huge pop from the crowd.

Mark Henry defeated Randy Orton by DQ. Orton got the upper hand early, but Henry dominated most of the match. As Orton was making his comeback, he grabbed a steel chair and hit Henry with it, getting himself disqualified. Orton hit him with the chair a few more times, but Henry eventually fought him off and hit Orton with the World’s Strongest Slam.

– Tamina Snuka defeated Layla. The finish came when Tamina hit a Samoan drop on Layla and followed up with a splash for the win.

– Brodus Clay and Tensai defeated 3MB. Comedy match with Clay & Tensai getting big pops for their dancing. At one point, Brodus hit a t-bone suplex on Jinder Mahal, who didn’t take the move well and had a close call with how he fell. Clay & Tensai hit a double chokeslam and a big splash for the win.

After the match, The Shield came down from the audience and destroyed Brodus and Tensai. Dean Ambrose got a microphone and said Sunday will be the same as what just happened in the ring. Team Cena are about to discover the consequences for their actions.

A promo aired for Fandango.

The Miz defeated Cody Rhodes. The Miz’s shoulder was taped up to sell Antonio Cesaro’s attack on him from RAW. Cody focused on The Miz’s shoulder early in the match. The Miz locked in the figure four and Cody tapped out quickly.

Jack Swagger defeated Zack Ryder. Ryder was aggressive early on but Swagger out-wrestled him. Swagger dominated most of the match. Ryder mounted a comeback and went for the Broski boot, but Swagger moved. Swagger locked in the Patriot Act and Ryder tapped.

After the match, Swagger got a microphone and introduced Zeb Colter, calling him a great American. Zeb talked about making your mark as a patriot, gave some more far-right talking points and said Ryder is not a real American due to his love of tanning and hair products. Zeb and Swagger had a lot of heel heat during this promo.

The Rock’s music hit and he got the biggest pop of the night by far. The Rock called out CM Punk for stealing his WWE Championship belt and said this Sunday, he’s going to make a trade with Punk – his belt for an ass whopping Punk will never forget. Punk and Paul Heyman interrupted on the big screen to let Rock know that he didn’t steal anything – it was actually The Rock who committed “grand larceny” at the Royal Rumble. Punk played up the stipulation of their match this Sunday – but Rock said his words are worthless. Rock says CM Punk is going to have a very bad Monday when he realizes that he got beat once again. Rock called Punk a spoiled little boy and ended the promo by saying, “If you smell…” without finishing the catchphrase.

Damien Sandow came out and interrupted Rock. He said it’s ironic that Smackdown is in Little Rock, because he’ll show everyone how little Rock has done since being WWE Champion. The Rock went into schtick about being in Little Rock and the people popped again. Sandow called the audience sheep. Rock said he has one thing to say, “Finally, The Rock has come back to Little Rock.” The Rock says he has a gift for Sandow. He asked the crowd what move he should do to Sandow. The crowd chanted “Rock Bottom,” which led to Rock shaking Sandow’s hand, delivering a Rock Bottom and then a People’s Elbow for good measure.

– Big Show defeated Chris Jericho. Big Show dominated early. Jericho fought back but got hit with a nasty spear and then a choke slam. Jericho rolled out of the ring to regroup. Back int he ring, Big Show went for a second rope elbow drop by nobody was home. Jericho went for the Walls of Jericho, but he couldn’t lock it in. Big Show delivered a knockout punch and got pin.

After the match, World Heavyweight champion Alberto Del Rio came out and had a staredown with Big Show.

There had been plans of turning Jericho heel shortly after his surprise return at the Royal Rumble, but he’s been getting very positive reactions from crowds at WWE events. Jericho revealed the secret to his success: keeping his character fresh.
