The Rock To Star In New Reality TV Competition “The Hero”

13

Cable television network TNT has announced that WWE superstar and Hollywood heavyweight Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has signed onto star in a new “action-packed competition series that will set out to find the next great hero” – coming Summer 2013.

Here is the official announcement from the TNT Newsroom:

High-Impact Series Showcasing Ordinary People in Extraordinary Situations, With Viewers Casting Votes for the Ultimate Hero

The Hero to Utilize Social Media Like Never Before in a Competition Series

TNT has given the greenlight to The Hero (working title), a new reality-competition series that will set out to find the next great hero. TNT has ordered eight episodes of the series from Ben Silverman‘s multimedia entertainment studio Electus and its 5×5 Media exclusive producers. The Hero will be headlined by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who will executive-produce with his producing partner, Dany Garcia. The series is set to premiere on TNT in summer 2013.

The Hero will bring 10 ordinary people together in a house and then assign them various missions that will test their brains, their brawn and even their morality. The show will challenge the competitors to prove they’ve got what it takes to be heroes, pushing them to the limits to see what they are willing (and able) to overcome, undergo or sacrifice for the sake of their fellow contestants. Johnson will serve as The Hero‘s mentor and motivator, encouraging the contestants to reach far beyond their personal limits. In the end, one player will rise above the others, overcoming obstacles he/she never thought possible in order to become a true hero.

In a unique twist on the reality-competition format, The Hero will incorporate social media into every facet of the show, from pre-production and casting to on-location shooting and live broadcasts. Through the show’s interactive digital platform, viewers will be able to vote each week for the contestant they consider to be the most heroic. The series will also leverage the power of Johnson’s enormous social-media following, which includes more than 10 million fans through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

“Dany and I couldn’t be more excited to enter into our first official foray in TV production,” said Dwayne Johnson. “The Hero speaks to everything I believe in when it comes to challenging ourselves, to becoming better people every day and to making the right choices while growing from the wrong ones. Bridging the digital and physical world on the small screen in a way that’s never been done before will enable fans to use social media and on-screen decision making to determine the fate of the show’s contestants, and our goal is to make each TV moment impactful and exciting.”

“The Hero is a great fit for TNT’s drama fans, whether they enjoy stories with a lot of action, suspense and danger, or stories that offer inspiration through the heroic actions of everyday people,” said Michael Wright, President, Head of Programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “We’re also very excited about the extensive social-media aspect of The Hero, which will engage viewers on an entirely new level and develop a strong emotional investment in the competitors and challenges.”

“The Rock is the embodiment of The Hero and an inspirational superstar with an unwavering moral compass,” said Ben Silverman, Founder and Chairman of Electus. “The Hero will deliver on his brand as an incredible action-filled series that test the limits of real people in extraordinary circumstances while also activating the Rock and Turner’s audience with seamless digital and social media tie-ins. TNT is the ideal platform partner, with incredible characters and heroes from the worlds of fiction and sports, as well as a unique capacity to deliver an enthusiastic audience of drama fans.”

Johnson has become a worldwide entertainment brand with a multi-hyphenate global reach as a successful actor, sports entertainer, social media maven, film and now, television producer. Johnson’s upcoming film credits include G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Pain & Gain, Empire State and The Fast and The Furious 6, with past credits including Journey 2: Mysterious Island, Fast Five, The Other Guys, The Game Plan, Gridiron Gang, Walking Tall and The Rundown. Johnson’s television credits include guest appearances on Family Guy and Saturday Night Live, plus regular appearances on WWE Monday Night Raw. Johnson is represented by WME Entertainment.

As a celebrity influencer, Johnson has established unparalleled social-media engagement with more than 10 million fans worldwide to date across the Facebook, Twitter and YouTube platforms. He holds an unprecedented 38% re-tweet rate and has a consistently expanding fan base that averages more than 8,000 new followers/fans per day on both Twitter and Facebook. At last year’s 5th Annual Mashable Awards, Johnson won as a “Must-Follow Actor or Actress on Social Media.” Additionally, over the past month alone, Johnson’s Facebook posts have received more than a quarter million “likes,” reaching upwards of 5 million fans with a single photo and message.

The Hero was created by Craig Armstrong and Rick Ringbakk of the Emmy®-winning 5×5 Media (Survivor, Fashion Star, TBS’s upcoming King of the Nerds), along with Charles Wachter (Fashion Star, Food Revolution) and Electus’ Ben Silverman (Fashion Star, The Biggest Loser, The Office). The series is executive-produced by Electus (Ben Silverman, Chris Grant and Jimmy Fox); 5×5 Media (part of the Electus studio system led by Craig Armstrong and Rick Ringbakk); Charles Wachter; Dwayne Johnson; and Dany Garcia. Electus International, Electus’ global distribution arm, will retain all international distribution rights.

Lex Luger Talks Lex Express, Nash’s Benoit/Guerrero Comments, The Kliq, The Narcissist

9

Wrestle Reaction Radio with Lex Luger
Show airs Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m.
Available at Wrestlereaction.net

Lex Luger on the PG rating and how it affects the business: “I think [WWE] draws from a broader audience with the PG versus the edgier style…a lot of parents have always told me, especially if they have younger kids, which of course, you have to keep them in mind for your branding, those ten and unders..the parents don’t like to have to watch the show with their hand on the channel changer the whole time…so, I like it to be a little more broadbased myself, personally, but I understand why it tends to always go towards the edgier storylines…”

On Kevin Nash’s recent comments about Eddie Guerrero/Chris Benoit: “I don’t know what context that was in…it’s definitely an outrageous quote. I do think size was emphasized more in our era and fans got used to that, but I think there’s been a huge transition…I understand Kevin. He likes to stay controversial. He’s a very sharp guy, marketing-wise, and I know Kevin will make those statements, but I remember, back when I worked with Kevin, he put Rey Mysterio over in the middle of the ring…to me, the diversity now of high-flyers, big guys, little guys, in-between guys, guys that still have the muscled physiques with height, guys who don’t, different body types, getting away from that reputation of WWE being all drug-enhanced. I love what they’re doing now.”

On never winning the World Heavyweight Championship in WWF during his ’93-94 run: “In spite of some of the rumors I’ve heard through the years, I was never promised a world title from Vince McMahon. Timing’s everything..and the company’s going through a huge transition from, I think, the economy at that time..there were circumstances going on where wrestling was down, we were in Europe a lot because house shows were down in the U.S. …there’s a lot of economic factors going on as far as who would be champion and who wasn’t…Bret [Hart] was sort of thinking about retiring…there were a lot of things going on back then, and they gave me an incredible run with that Lex Express, the SummerSlam was a spectacular event…the buyrate from that pay per view was not what they wanted..I think they just decided to head in a different direction…”

On whether or not he actually named “The Kliq”: “I don’t know if I can take sole credit for that..I would like to maybe give Davey Boy [Smith] the credit for that. Davey Boy and Owen Hart. I used to travel with them and they were much more clever and entertaining than I, so if there were any names put out there, I would really have to give them credit for that, not me. I just went along with it.”

On “The Narcissist” gimmick and what he thought about its potential: “I had trouble grasping or getting my arms around what [Vince McMahon] wanted to do…once we did it and he took me out, introduced me at the WrestleMania as these girls at Cesar’s Palace carry out these huge mirrors, that was a lot of fun and I was definitely gaining some momentum. It was quite the shock when he came to me and said ‘I’m gonna dress you in red, white, and blue and have you come off a helicopter and slam Yokozuna and become a good guy, but once again, Vince McMahon does things that a lot of us would doubt. He’s very daring and he did it. But yeah..in retrospect, I would have a little more time as The Narcissist because that really was a lot of fun and I did think it was gaining some momentum.”

On leaving WWE and going to WCW: “Money was definitely a factor but the contract I was offered at the time by WCW, for my career earnings, was not really a big inducement. Eric Bischoff was not a big fan of Lex Luger personally and really wanted me to prove myself a little bit…Eric took wonderful care of me after that…but at the time, it wasn’t really a large contract offer by some of the other standards in the industry. But in WWE at the time, my contract had run out..and this is unprecedented, some people don’t grasp this..but I had no contract. Vince and I went on just a handshake, a temporary agreement, for over five months…and I had talked with Sting, a few weeks before the initial Nitro show, and just out of casual conversation with Sting, I mentioned I wasn’t under contract with WWE…Sting was blown away by that, so he went to Eric Bischoff..and that’s how the whole thing started..”

Lex Luger talks about a lot more of his career, the product of today, his future plans and much more in this 40-minute interview. Check it out at WrestleReaction.net and be sure to tune in live every Tuesday night from 7-8 EST!

Pete Gas Talks Vince & Shane’s Relationship, & Vince Buying Them Beer When They Were Underage

7

Inside The Ropes Radio with Pete Gas
Show airs Thursday nights at 10:00 p.m.
Available at InsideTheRopes.podbean.com

On meeting Hulk Hogan for the first time, when he was a teen: Vince was renting a house near where the house he’s in now was being built. Vince was cool, he let us drink in the house. He let us drink beer but the one condition would be we gave him our keys and we weren’t allowed to leave. He knew kids would be kids and so he would go and get us some beer. So we’re swimming in the pool and we hear Vince’s car pull up and we hear a Harley Davidson coming up with it, so we go out and see Hulk Hogan get off the bike, coming towards the house and he’s carrying our beer. So at the 15th Anniversary of Raw, I had mentioned that to Hogan. I went over and introduced myself and fortunately he remembered me. I was honored. I told him, “The last time I saw you” and I’m telling him the story and he’s looking at me and he says, “so I was carrying your beer?” and I was like “Well, yeah I guess if you think about it you were.” And he said “So you owe me one? Go get me a f—ing beer!” I went up to the concession stand and got him a beer, I guess that was my payback.

How The Mean Street Posse was formed: It was the idea of a few people. Vince Russo, Ed Ferrara, and Chris Chambers who really ran with it. They wanted Shane to have some heat going into WrestleMania. One day Shane called us to come to his office, I’ll never forget it was a Friday. Rodney and I used to work out at the Titan building. He called us into his office. He says to us, “Sunday at 10 o clock can you go over to the studio, and dress really preppy. Here’s the script.” He then ripped it up and said “f— the script” and told us to tell stories about what we did as kids and he told us Chris Chambers would splice it and fix it and we’d be on Monday Night Raw. It was supposed to be a 2-3 week little stint. They brought us to Albany the week before WrestleMania for Raw. By the time we got to WrestleMania, I remember sitting in the front row, Isaac Hayes was in the row behind taking pictures of us. There were a bunch of signs with our name on it. We went and about ten days later, Shane handed us checks and he said, “Do you guys have any vacation time?” and he said, “We wanna take you on the road for a little while.”

On Bradshaw almost injuring him early in his career: We were facing Farooq and Bradshaw, The Acolytes. Bradshaw went to hit me with a steel chair and I took it, straight to the head. Now Shane had told us certain things about respect and that after the matches you shake hands and thank the other guy for the match. So I wasn’t going to let him know I was hurt, so I shook his hand afterwards and said thank you. He told me six months later that through doing that I earned his respect. The next day, two specific people approached me. Mick Foley checked if I was OK, and Chris Jericho, who told me that I’d proved I was tough and next time to put my hands up if I get hit with a chair shot.

Thoughts on Shane leaving the WWE and relationship with Vince: They’re very close. Vince was the best man at his wedding. There’s no animosity there. Shane keeps things very close to himself. Shane had something to prove to himself, he wanted to do something for himself and start his own business. As far as his relationship with his family, they’re so close. A couple of weeks ago, Shane’s company went public and he was in New York ringing the bell and I know his father was right by his side.

Alberto Del Rio, Ricardo Rodriguez, and David Otunga were shown inside the general manager’s office. They came straight to the ring. Ricardo was wearing a neck brace. Del Rio spoke and received the “What?” treatment. They aired a montage of Brogue Kicks with the goal of having it banned. Booker T came out and asked the fans whether he should ban the kick. The fans were against it, so the kick is still legal.

1. Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara defeated The Miz and Cody Rhodes. Cody accidentally kicked The Miz. Rey followed up with a 619 for the win. A good back and forth match, and Jarrad noted that Sin Cara is amazing live.

Hornswoggle stomped on Daniel Bryan’s toe. There was a recap of the “Hug It Out” segment from Raw.

Otunga was shown with Booker T backstage threatening to press legal action.

2. Zack Ryder defeated Daniel Bryan via reverse decision. Bryan came out and tried to remain calm. He got upset when there was a Yes! chant during the match. He begged off Ryder’s attack and they hugged, which led to Bryan applying the No! Lock. Bryan won by submission, but he refused to release the hold so the referee reversed the decision. Bryan essentially lost to the Yes! chant.

Randy Orton was shown backstage. Damien Sandow came out and cut a promo discussing his actions in his match against Sheamus and ripping on social media. Sandow was interrupted by Orton, who entered to a huge pop. Orton informed him Booker T switched his original opponent with Sandow.

3. Randy Orton beat Damien Sandow by countout. Dolph Ziggler joined the commentary team. Sandow ran to the back after the middle rope DDT while Orton was coiled for the RKO, leading to the countout finish. Orton and Ziggler fought, Sandow came back to save Ziggler from an RKO and took one himself, allowing Dolph to escape.

Otunga continued to argue that the Brogue Kick should be banned. He brought X-rays. Booker booked a match between Otunga and Sheamus.

4. The Prime Time Players defeated Primo and Epico (w/Rosa) to become No. 1 contenders to the WWE Tag Titles. Kofi Kingston and R-Truth were on commentary. Yes, the Players are the No. 1 contenders for the one millionth time.

Teddy Long was shown backstage with Kaitlyn. Vickie and Dolph demanded to see Booker T. Teddy said he’d advise Booker T to make a match against Orton for Night of Champions.

Wade Barrett cut a heel promo backstage with Matt Striker interviewing him.

5. Wade Barrett defeated Yoshi Tatsu. Barrett entered to huge heat. There were also a lot of pro-Barrett fans. Barrett beat Yoshi with what appears to be a new finisher. Barrett cut another heel promo.

A video hyped Bret Hart as appearing on Raw next week in Montreal.

6. Sheamus defeated David Otunga. They changed the ring apron beforehand. Alberto came out to watch the match. Sheamus hit White Noise to set up the Brogue Kick. Booker came out and interrupted the match. He banned the Brogue Kick. Sheamus jaw jacked with Del Rio at ringside, then caught Otunga with the Irish Curse and finished him off with the Cloverleaf.

TNA Knockout May Be Blacklisted From Wrestling In Mexico

6

Dark Angel’s (a/k/a Sarita in TNA Wrestling) tenured wrestling career in Mexico appears in doubt following her recent excursion to Japan for all-women’s league STARDOM’s 5 STAR Grand Prix Tournament. According to RingbellesOnline.com, by way of noted lucha libre expert Steve Sims of F4WOnline.com and Super Luchas magazine, CMLL officials are extremely displeased with the champion grappler for taking it upon herself to work a two-month tour for the Japanese promotion when their official women’s wrestling partner in the country is REINA. CMLL is also not being financially compensated for her appearances since Dark Angel secured her own deal, which goes against company protocol.

Dark Angel appeared at a few STARDOM shows in March to celebrate friend Io Shirai’s fifth anniversary event as well as her own ten-year anniversary in professional wrestling. Since Dark Angel took off for an extended Japanese tour in mid-August, CMLL has continuously mis-advertised her as appearing at events with full knowledge that she will not be able to in an attempt to damage her reputation in Mexico. Sims noted during the Figure Four Daily radio show last week, “…she might not have a job for much longer in Mexico, it’s sad to say.” He also explained why CMLL is falsely advertising her for shows.

“As soon as they know they’re not available for bookings they start listing them on their posters and assigning them bookings that they know they’ll miss,” Sims said. “That way, they get rid of them – which appears to be their intention and they can say “Look. Here’s the poster. Here’s the actual poster that we sent to the promoters. We said Dark Angel’s going to be there on such-and-such-a-time and she didn’t show up for work.”

Dark Angel has informed fans of her whereabouts through her Facebook page with daily updates on her Japanese tour. After CMLL continued to falsely advertise her for shows, she wrote Thursday, “Just letting you all know that I’m still in Japan and will not be wrestling in Guadalajara in the upcoming weeks. Sorry for the confusion.”

Sims speculated that CMLL may not book Dark Angel for shows once her tour of Japan concludes as punishment for her “betrayal” and since they control the Canadian native’s work permit for Mexico, they can blacklist her from working for any other promotion in the country.

Sims said, “It appears that CMLL is doing it deliberately to issue a punishment to her, and I think because of the work permit situation, what we will find out is that they simply don’t book her, at least until such times as her work permit comes up, and hope that teaches her a lesson that she can work in Japan but only if the CMLL office gets a cut of her bookings.”

In a worst-case scenario, Dark Angel would still be able to appear for TNA Wrestling as Sarita, as well as STARDOM or any other non-Mexican promotion. Sims adds, “They are very stubborn in CMLL and they’re going to make their point with Sarah Stock whether she likes it or not.”

TNA Wrestling Officials Lie About Case Of Stolen Belts?, Matt Morgan Deletes Tweets Ripping TNA

15

– Multiple news outlets reported last week that two men were charged with stealing TNA Wrestling’s World Heavyweight Championship belt and a replica prior to a live event in Ottumwa, Iowa on Aug. 18 while a stagehand was unloading props from his truck. Sources affiliated with the wrestling organization told TMZ.com that the World Heavyweight Championship stolen was valued at $6,000.00 and ultimately returned. According to a person close to the chief of the Ottumwa Police Department, multiple claims made to both the department and TMZ.com were not true.

TNA Wrestling officials falsely said the belt was valued at $6,000.00. The department later received proof of purchase from Wildcat Belts, which showed that its stated value was exaggerated. According to WildCatBelts.com, a real copy of the belt is valued at $2,750.00. TMZ.com also reported that the belts were returned to the wrestling organization. Ottumwa Police Department are actually maintaining possession of the belts as evidence pending trial. Also, the belts weren’t stolen from the equipment truck when a stagehand turned away momentarily as reported. JR Blog: Punk & Heyman Together, Austin’s Knee, Miz On Commentary, Ryback

19

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his JRsBarBQ.com with his thoughts on Monday’s WWE RAW. Here are some highlights of what JR wrote about:

Steve Austin Wrestling Again: “Some fans who follow me on Twitter @JRsBBQ, over 534,000, actually think that (Steve Austin) will be wrestling at WM29 which is not going to happen. Steve is rehabbing his repaired knee aggressively to be able to resume his movie work and has a film set to begin production in early 2013. This was a major knee surgery that would keep many inactive in a large part for up to one year.”

The Miz On Commentary: “I’d assume that @MikeTheMiz discovered that coming off the bench to take an extended seat at ringside for commentary is a daunting task. Miz is glib and very bright but performing a wrestling promo and doing color commentary are much different animals. Nonetheless, Miz looked good on camera which is an important facet for any TV producer to facilitate.”

Ryback’s Momentum: “Ryback is starting to move the emotion needle seemingly every week. The “Feed Me More” chants are growing. I only wish that I could tie that in to a JR’s BBQ Sauce promotion during the football tailgating season and on into the holidays. Hey, an entrepreneur can dream, can’t he? I can see Ryback taking the next step sooner than later on WWE TV. ”

John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio: “Enjoyed the Cena-ADR Falls Count Anywhere bout. Physical stuff. The cheap shot drive by executed by @CMPunk was a hit…no pun intended. Plus the reveal of Punk’s ‘wheelman’ @HeymanHustle Paul Heyman was a helluva end to the three hour broadcast. ”

Paul Heyman & CM Punk’s Alliance: “Heyman and Punk together is a potentially outstanding dynamic with which fans can emotionally invest. It has many potential roads to travel but associating with Heyman will certainly help facilitate Punk being looked upon by many as an antagonist.”

Kenn Doane Discusses Working With Triple H, Playing College Football, His WWE Release

12

PatriotNewspaper.com has published an article on Kenn Doane, 26, who appeared in WWE as Kenny and Kenny Dykstra from 2006 to 2008. The former Spirit Squad member enrolled in Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts this semester and made their football team as a tight end after not playing the game since he was 18-years-old.

“I have always loved football and I always set goals for myself. My first dream was to get to the WWE and I set that and my second goal after wrestling was to get a degree and play college football,” he said.

With his opportunity, Doane plans to take full advantage of it. “I can make my own schedule and I can slow things down work-wise with wrestling, and financially I am set. I can take 10 weeks, 12 weeks, however long the season is, into this and go full force. That is where I at now.”

Doane also discussed his road to WWE and what it was like working with fellow Killer Kowalski trainee, Triple H.

“Triple H is a very smart. Any time I had a question, whether it was personal, business, whatever, I would ask him,” Doane said.

On November 10, 2008, WWE announced that Doane had been released from his contract. He explains, “because they were going through a lot of different layoffs and a lot of us were getting paid a lot of money and they didn’t have a storyline for me at the time, plus my body was breaking down; traveling 270 days a year is really hard.” Following his release, he continued to wrestle independently, and still does on occasion.

Doane left with some words of wisdom. “Life is always a journey, it’s always going to throw curve balls at you, I am not looking four years down the road right now, I have to get through today and do the best I can do today, and then tomorrow I have to compare myself to yesterday and make sure tomorrow that I am better than I was yesterday.”
