Backstage News On The Miz Turning Babyface & Future Feuds

19

As we’ve been seeing on WWE television in recent weeks, it appears the groundwork is being laid for former WWE Champion The Miz to be turning babyface. The Miz has been working as a heel for virtually all of his 6-year WWE run and some people believe that his character may have run its course as a heel.

The Miz is one of the best talkers in WWE and despite his start & stop pushes, audiences are solidly behind his character and his “Awesome” catchphrase. Additionally,The Miz does a ton of promotional and charity work for the company and they sees him as as having big potential as a good guy.

Especially with Miz starring in the new WWE Studios film The Marine 3: Homefront (set for a Spring 2013 release), the timing for him turning babyface  in early 2013 works out well.  As for who Miz could work with in his new role, there has been talk of feuding Miz with Antonio Cesaro in 2013.

Matt Hardy Talks About Him & Jeff Setting The Bar Too High In WWE, Current State Of Tag Team Wrestling

5

Shining Wizards Podcast with Matt Hardy
Hosts: Tony Z, Eddie, and Matt
Interview available at Shiningwizards.com.

On his match with Shane Douglas being a battle of former ECW Champions from different incarnations: “I think we both have something to prove. We both have mutual respect for one another, but that being said neither one of us are gonna pull any punches when it comes to getting the W and looking good. Shane is probably the most well-known, recognized World Champion of the original ECW, and when WWE recreated it, it was ECW to an extent, and I felt I was one of the better ECW Champions. Two guys from two different eras, and I know when Shane gets in the ring he’s got something to prove. Shane is probably the best champion from the original ECW, but I have something to prove.”

On his first appearances in WWE with his brother: “We met a guy who was in independent wrestler, and he wrestled primarily for the Italian Stallion. We worked every Friday and Saturday, basically for free, learning the psychology and terminology of the business. Every few months, he would take guys to WWE for TV as extras. The main goal of my brother and I was to work hard to show what we have, even if we weren’t featured. We tried to make the talent look as good as possible.”

On whether he and his brother raised the bar too high: “We definitely raised the bar too high that we made it harder for everyone else to get near it, even ourselves. We tried to make each match better. Jeff and I wrestled in ladder matches up and down the East Coast on the independents. It was our idea (in WWE), we pitched that. Then Edge and Christian were two guys that worked like us, and had the athleticism and the intestinal fortitude to compete in these matches, and they were magical. No Mercy 1999 we turned the corner and went from WWE wrestlers to WWE Superstars. We had no idea how historic that match would be. This led to matches with the Dudleys, the TLC matches, and how far we went with that.”

On the current state of tag team wrestling: “It would be nice if tag team wrestling came back. I saw Raw recently. Primo and Epico wrestled, and they’re a good tag team, and they end up getting beat. And then the Usos wrestled, who I think could be really good, and they lost as well, and the teams that beat them were two singles guys thrown together. This is when these guys get wasted, and then when they don’t get over as a tag team, they look at them like it’s their fault. The talent has to provide, but it’s the people that put them there that makes a huge difference as to whether they succeed or not. If you put them in a position to fail, and people aren’t going to believe in them, it’s your fault as well. You can’t just blame the talent if you don’t book them in good positioning.”

Steve Austin, Chris Jericho & More Comment On Heyman’s Fake Heart Attack

18

Moday’s RAW featured a controversial angle, with Paul Heyman and CM Punk mocking Jerry Lawler’s heart attack by Heyman faking a heart attack of his own. Several former WWE superstars spoke to Arda Ocal of the Baltimore Sun about the angle, including Steve Austin, Chris Jericho and Lance Storm.

* DISCUSSION: What Did YOU Think About The Angle? Did WWE Go Too Far? Comment Here

Here are some highlights of what they said about WWE turning Lawler’s brush with death into a storyline:

Steve Austin: “I believe in pushing the envelope in an aggressive fashion. But when a guy damn near dies at ringside, let it go. You look at all the contributions Jerry Lawler has made in this business: from a work standpoint, a promo standpoint and then as a broadcaster. I think that’s pushing the envelope in the wrong direction. There’s better ways to go get real heat than that.”

Chris Jericho: “I think it was pretty obvious, don’t you? I kind of expected it. Punk’s promo was awesome. It’s wrestling so you knew it would end up as an angle sooner or later. I got the same complaints when I did the alcoholic angle (earlier this year with CM Punk). It would be like being mad at “Breaking Bad” because the dad was a drug addict or something. It’s just a TV show, after all.”

Lance Storm: “Thought it was poor. Both he and Punk are capable to get real heat, no need to sink so low. Also thought it was out of character for Punk so it hurt. Punk is about Best in World and himself. Why bother joking about heart attack it goes nowhere. Interuption was okay and in character. Fake heart attack was cheap and pointless.”

Jim Ross Blogs About Jerry Lawler’s Return To RAW & His Own Future Doing Commentary

4

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR wrote about Jerry Lawler’s return to WWE television on RAW:

“Loved seeing the King back on RAW this past Monday night. Jerry’s feeling great and has dropped approximately 20 pounds via a more disciplined diet. We hooked up at the Westin Hotel in Columbus and rode to the arena together just like old times. Nothing had changed…the music we listened to…the topics of our conversation…King not stopping at stop signs…me giving him the wrong directions…nothing changed and it seemed like old times when we worked together every week.”

JR says the emotion that we saw on RAW between him and Jerry Lawler was unscripted:

“Seeing Jerry and getting to introduce him back to RAW was a big, personal thrill for me. It was approximately two months ago that I never thought I would see him alive again.”

“Our hug was real. That was a ‘moment’ in case you might be wondering what a real ‘moment’ in our business truly is.”

As for Jim Ross’ future on Monday Night RAW and the possibility of WWE going with a 3-man announce team each week, JR said:

“The plan all along was for me to simply sit in for the King, do color commentary and not play by play, and keep Jerry’s seat warm until he was well enough to return to the announce table. I never heard anyone in WWE ever discuss King, Cole and me ever doing a three man announce team but that rumor or sentiment sort of took on a life of its own in some fan’s eyes.”

Bret Hart Talks About The Attitude Era & Wanting To Work With Triple H More

4

WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart spoke to WWE.com this week to promote the new WWE ’13 video game. Here are some highlights of what the Hit Man said about:

The Lasting Legacy Of The Attitude Era:

“Just about everybody I know talks about that being the last great era of wrestling,” Hart said. “For me as a fan, I loved all the stuff (Steve) Austin did with me and with Vince McMahon. Austin has such a great character that I really enjoyed following his career even after mine was over… Even when I was with him in 1997, I thought the stuff I did with Austin was as good as it gets – the match we had at WrestleMania 13, all the promos we did, the Street Fight Match. There was this conviction we both had to make it real, to make everyone really feel that these were real – kind of like what the UFC projects today. We were doing a better job of doing it back then.

The Attitude Era Star He Wishes He Could Have Worked With More:

“If I could go back in time, I would have loved to have done more with Triple H. He blossomed into a bigger star after I left.”

“I regret, looking back now, that we didn’t have more matches, or better matches or at least one pay-per-view match where we could have really showed our best stuff — or at least, I did. He’s a guy that he and I had some situation together, and I think it worked well on Monday Night Raw, but we never really had the chance to show what we could really do.”

The Definitive Attitude Era Superstar:

“I can’t think of anyone more fitting than Steve [Austin].”

The program airs Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays on Sirius 92 and XM 208 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., visit www.facebook.com/bustedopen for more information. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

Could he ever be medically cleared to wrestle again?: “It’s not even about being cleared. I’m 100 percent fine. Once I had my fusion done in 2000 and I went into the recovery phase and then got back in the ring, everything was fine and dandy. I was just running too hard towards the end and had a few issues. It was time to get out. Passing the physical isn’t the issue.”

Is CM Punk the only guy he would come back for to wrestle?: “I think John Cena would be a guy as well. I really like John. He is the face of that company right now and he has done a hell of a job and I got a lot of respect for him. You look at a guy like Triple H, that was one of my favorite guys to work in the ring with. Such a ring general and such a pro. Just an easy night at the office. Undertaker is kind of beat to shreds, kind of like me. Those would be a few guys off the top of my head. Would it just be CM Punk? No. Is CM Punk at the top of the list? Yes!”

Jerry Jarrett Upset With Jerry Lawler Return Segment On Raw, Longtime Wrestling Magazines Discontinued

67

– Jerry Jarrett, Jerry Lawler’s former business partner, took offense to WWE using the legendary grappler’s near-fatal heart attack as a “cheap heat” angle on Raw Monday.

Nine weeks following the ordeal, a tearful Lawler offered his gratitude for the amount of support he received. The WWE Hall of Famer was then interrupted by CM Punk, who continued their on-screen rivalry by mocking him. The segment included a crass imitation of a heart attack, courtesy of Paul Heyman.

“I watched WWE last night. Jerry Lawler was returning after surviving a life threatening heart attack. I sat watching the television with a feeling of pride that they were honoring the return of such a great wrestler. I sat thinking, “now this is real class”. Just when I was appreciating the class WWE was showing, it ended suddenly with a juvenile cheap heat angle,” wrote Jarrett on Facebook.

“I turned the television off and starting thinking about Linda McMahon’s hard work and great expense running for the Senate. It is exactly this kind of programming that prevented her from becoming a Senator. Wrestling should have some limits and boundaries. If you offend great portions of the audience, it is a bad angle.”

– According to SLAM! Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Illustrated has discontinued its sister publications, The Wrestler and Inside Wrestling (which had been combined into one large issue in recent years). The publications had been in circulation since 1968.

Pro Wrestling Illustrated will continue to be published. It is now the last remaining non-WWE publication in the United States.

The wrestling magazine industry has struggled mightily since last year, with WWE continuously posting decreasing revenue for its own publications.

– The late Eddie Guerrero is featured in today’s “Superstar Spotlight” on WWE.com. He passed away seven years ago today after being found unconscious in his hotel room in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by his nephew, Chavo. Chavo attempted CPR, but Eddie Guerrero was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived at the scene. He was 38 years old. An autopsy revealed that Guerrero died as a result of Acute Cardiac failure due to underlying Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular disease.

– Former WWE stars Goldust and Tommy Dreamer have been announced to appear at the Wales Comic Con taking place Sunday, April 28, 2013 in Wrexham, United Kingdom.
