Chris Jericho Hypes The RAW Brand’s Money In The Bank Match

10

WWE.com has a storyline interview up with Chris Jericho, who hypes his involvement in the RAW brand’s Money in the Bank match this Sunday. Here’s an except of Jericho’s comments:

“Money in the Bank Ladder Matches can be almost like stunt shows in a lot of ways. But this is not going to be like that. Sometimes there are guys trying to make a name for themselves, so they’re going to take more and more risks. We’ve already all made names for ourselves, already have WWE Hall of Fame careers. We’re not taking risks to prove anything. We have nothing to prove, but we have everything to gain.”

“I’m sure there are still going to be dangerous moments – there always are. But I think you’re going to see more intensity, more brutality, with the ladder used more as a weapon, at least that’s the way that I see it. That’s my strategy.”

“I think you’re going to see four guys that come out of there feeling every moment of the match, and feeling every moment of our careers. After doing this for 22 years, I get into a match like this knowing that I’ll feel every match I’ve had in those 22 years.”

Former WWE Creative Writers Recall Infamous Katie Vick Storyline

20

Former WWE creative members Seth Mates (@sethmates) and Chris Gough (@kcmetropro) appeared on The LAW’s ‘Review a Wai’ podcast to chat about the infamous Katie Vick angle that took place on the October 21, 2002 episode of Raw. On the program, a vignette was shown of Triple H, dressed as Kane, simulating mock sex with a mannequin in a casket. Excerpts from the interview are as follows:

The genesis of the Katie Vick storyline: “At this point, (Vince) wanted to start having a lot more backstories to wrestlers. He didn’t want it just to be like, ‘Oh, I wanna beat you up. You stole my girlfriend, let’s have a match.’ He wanted it to be more like, ‘I wanna know who every character is.’ Their backgrounds, and a lot of that. You’ve seen through the years of wrestling, he’s gone up and down with this kinda stuff.

“It was just a matter of, ‘We want to know more about Kane. We know about Paul Bearer and the burning angle, and the Undertaker scenario, but we don’t really know much more about him. So let’s spend the last ten minutes of this conference call discussing Kane’s background and coming up with a way to bring Kane back,’ because he had torn his bicep, and he was coming back to TV. It started off with us pitching ideas about how to bring Kane back.”

Vince McMahon’s pitch: “At the end of the call, Vince basically made the call to say, ‘Why don’t we make Kane…why don’t we say he’s a murderer, and he’s murdered somebody in his past?’ It sort of formulated into what you saw. This was Vince’s seed.

The funeral home shoot: “The necrophilia thing had only really begun in that vignette. That vignette was done by Stephanie (McMahon), Vince, and Bruce (Pritchard), and I believe it was mostly Stephanie; Stephanie Triple H, and Vince were the ones behind that. This wasn’t discussed; Triple H was involved the whole time, so no one had to explain it to him. He was obviously almost part of the family at the point, he knew everything that was going on. Kane, on the other hand, he was getting a little bored with his direction. He had the big start in ’97, and it ran its course. He wanted to change it up a little bit, so they decided they were gonna push him to go for a title run eventually, for the World Heavyweight Championship against Triple H in October. It was a situation where he knew it was going to be a big push, he’s taking on Triple H.

“The angle was basically, ‘There’s a backstory here where he’s gonna start picking on you for your girlfriend dying, and that he’s gonna start acting like you killed her, and he’s gonna start playing more emotional mind games with Kane.’ That was the pitch, with Triple H and Kane. There was no, like, ‘Hey, by the way, he’s gonna say that you banged your ex-girlfriend when she was, uh, dead.’ That was never even talked about until the vignette aired, and it really wasn’t talked about after that again. That wasn’t an idea by a writer, that wasn’t pitched to anybody. That was the vignette that was of the sick minds of the McMahon family that was taped in the funeral home that night.”

Dustin Rhodes Recalls The Creation Of Goldust, Issues With It

11

The wrestler formerly known as Goldust, Dustin Rhodes, joined Kayfabe Wrestling Radio Tuesday night. In a nearly 20 minute interview, he talked about the creation of the Goldust character, his father’s wrestling and how that affected his career decision, his use of ring psychology, his time tag teaming with Booker T, his teaming with Ricky Steamboat and what he learned from it, his hopes for a heavyweight championship run, what he wants to do before he retires and a host of other topics.

Would he still have been a wrestler if his father (WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes) wasn’t involved with the industry: “Probably not. Just growing up, watching it all the time because dad being in the business probably was the one factor that lead me to be in the business. So, if he was not, then I have no idea what I’d be doing, probably playing football or something like that; maybe be in the NFL by now. Who knows?”

What he learned from working with “Rowdy” Roddy Piper: “I mean the whole learning how to actually work heel. Working heel works different for me; being Dustin Rhodes for so many years and then a giant switch of a character and everything. It took me a while; it took me about six months) to figure out Goldust and it was pretty tough trying to figure it out. You know, I was frustrated because stuff wasn’t working and then finally I do one thing that works and you kind of hold onto it and kind of build off of that. That’s kind of how it got started.”

The importance of ring psychology in the professional wrestling business: “Psychology is so hard to learn these days; you can’t really teach it. Psychology is storytelling; it’s knowing when to do a certain move as opposed to not doing it; how to make that first person in the front row… there’s always someone out in the arena (out around ringside) that does not want to be there, that hates pro wrestling and can’t stand it, that doesn’t believe in it, he’s only there because of their kids; they’re only there to see John Cena or someone like that. And that’s my job, that’s who I pick; there is always one and I’ll find them. I’ll look for them and I’ll work my whole match to get around this one individual, whether it be female or male. And towards the end of the match, they are on their feet and you can actually see something in their eyes change, a spark in their eyes change… at the end of the match when they are on their feet and you can actually see ‘wow, this guy made me a believer’, then my job is done right.”

The Goldust character and issues with it: “When Vince sat me down and explained the character, explained that the character was androgynous; I seriously had to go home and look up that word cause I had no idea what the hell that meant. But he explained it to me; I thought ‘Ok, let’s give this a shot’, and he said ‘I’m going to be behind you no matter what, Dustin. There’s going to be a lot of people talking’. But he kept using the word androgynous; never used the word gay or anything like that, so me knowing what that means now, I’m going out there and try to dress the part but not really understanding how to act the part of the Goldust character; he had me trial and error stuff. I did a few things and they didn’t really work, so I was frustrated and finally one night I felt it clicked. I was with Savio Vega, and I owe a big deal to Savio Vega for helping me get this character over because he really kicked it into gear for me, and he said go behind me and start to rub up and down my chest. I was really against that and didn’t want to do it, but I thought ‘what the hell, let’s try it’. So I tried it, it worked, people became unglued, pissed off, angry, saying ‘what the hell is wrong with you’, you know just horrible stuff but I was like ‘Damn, this is fun, this is awesome. I got this’. And from that point it was so easy, so easy that Vince had to tell me to tone it back a bit.”

Hope to one day become World Heavyweight Champion: “Things just came natural to be and I think maybe some things that held me back in the past; I’m a little hot-headed and not patient enough and I get frustrated very, very easy. That could have led to a lot of my not getting a world title run and things like that. It’s no easy job being a World Heavyweight Champion; these guys like Cena, Sheamus, these guys are modeled around that and are champs for a reason. They can go out and do it 300 days a year and not bitch or complain and do whatever is asked of them: appearances and whatever is asked. And they can work… I fought for it a few times, with Austin, with Shawn Michaels, with Bret (Hart) and it just didn’t progress. I don’t know what much else to say about it except everyone who gets into the professional wrestling business wants to be the World Heavyweight Champion. If they don’t, they don’t need to be in the business. I want to be World Heavyweight Champion, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen… I’m not going to retire until I win the NWA World Heavyweight Title, the same belt my dad had. I’m going to win that title before I hang it up.”

The audio interview is available here.

21

– Indian wrestling legend Dara Singh passed away at his home in Mumbia, India this morning, according to various local and national reports. The 84 year old legend competed in free-style pro wrestling tournaments in the 1950’s before moving on to become a Bollywood movie star. For more on his passing, visit the Times of India.

– WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin has landed a role in the sequel to the 2010 hit “Grown Ups.” The film will star Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Andy Samberg, Maya Rudolf, Taylor Lautner, Steve Buscemi, Salma Hayek, and Paulina Gretzky, daughter of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky. Austin previously worked with Adam Sandler in the 2005 comedy “Longest Yard.”

Del Rio’s Backstage Power, More On Sara Del Rey’s Signing

20

– There continues to be buzz behind the scenes in WWE about the signing of Sara Del Rey and how she has a different look than what WWE typically goes for in their Divas. She works a more serious in-ring style than most of the WWE roster (most similar to Beth Phoenix) and could be used as an opponent of Kharma.

Aside from Del Rey having a different look than the barbie dolls WWE gravitates towards, she is also older than the usual Diva signing at 31 years old.

– Alberto Del Rio is expected to receive a big push this year for a number of reasons. Aside from the lack of roster depth on SmackDown, Del Rio has said publicly on several occasions that he does not plan to wrestle for many more years.

Especially since WWE’s other Mexican stars have their own baggage (Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara), Del Rio is perceived as having leverage behind the scenes and will be taken care of accordingly.

John Laurinaitis Update, More On Fit Finlay’s Return To WWE

15

– As previously reported, Fit Finlay is back with WWE and will resume his role as a producer. Finlay met with WWE during WrestleMania weekend and did state in an interview that he was meeting with WWE to discuss a new deal. Since WrestleMania, Finlay has been working with former WWE wrestler Tajiri and helped launch his new Wrestling New Classics promotion in Japan. Now that Tajiri’s new promotion is off the ground, Finlay was free to return to WWE.

– John Laurinaitis’ power behind the scenes continues to dwindle, with several other people now running the talent development division under Triple H. Laurinaitis had been involved in talent development and booking live events, but now he’s limited to a performer and possibly handling company payroll.

Despite being fired weeks ago, Laurinaitis continues to work dark matches, teaming with the Big Show against John Cena in handicap matches. It’s expected Laurinaitis will be brought back to television in some capacity in the coming months.

RAW 1,000: Undertaker’s Status, Lesnar-Triple H, Legends

36

WWE is finalizing plans for the upcoming 1,000th episode of RAW. Big names already confirmed include The Rock, Brock Lesnar, Mick Foley, Bret Hart and a DX reunion (Shawn Michaels and Triple H).

There will likely also be appearances from Vince and Stephanie McMahon, with Shane McMahon being a long-shot and Linda McMahon considered unlikely, due to her ongoing Senate campaign and their efforts to distance her from the WWE product. There will also be a slew of “2nd tier” legends appearing (the usual suspects).

As for the Undertaker, it will depend on whether WWE plans for him to work SummerSlam. The show is so stacked already that it would not make sense to bring him in unless they will be building towards an upcoming match.

With the audience of RAW’s 1,000th episode expected to be one of the largest of the year, WWE will capitalize on this by making Brock Lesnar vs. Triple H official for SummerSlam.

Angle Working On Comedy Movie, Masters-TNA, Wes Brisco

15

– Kurt Angle is working on a fictional comedy movie called “Singlet: The Dana Kelly Story” about a former Olympic boxer who is trying to make a return to the Olympics as a weightlifter. Angle is reaching out to TNA fans to help fund the project.

– There is some confusion surrounding WWE letting Wes Brisco leave and work for TNA. Brisco, 29, is the son of WWE Hall of Famer Gerald Brisco and had been getting rave reviews at WWE developmental before getting let go. He’s on the smaller side and a great athlete, which would have made him a good fit for WWE’s planned cruiserweights show. For whatever reason, WWE let him go and now he’s being considered for a regular spot on TNA’s roster.

– There has been talk of TNA bringing in Chris Masters as one of the masked men who attacked Sting, but he’s booked to wrestle in Russia the night before Bound for Glory. This would make wrestling in Phoenix the following night difficult, but not impossible.

Hogan & Sting Teaming At BFG, Dixie Carter On Real Housewives?

27

– TNA recently announced that Bound for Glory on October 14th will take place from Phoenix, Arizona at the Grand Canyon University Arena. The basketball arena typically holds 5,000 fans. Capacity will be closer to 3,500 when the stage is set up.

There is talk of Sting and Hulk Hogan teaming up against the new Aces & Eights mystery group that attacked Sting and have been taunting Hogan on Twitter. Even though Hogan is extremely limited in what he can do in the ring, Sting could work most of the match and Hogan could get in a few of his signature spots in what would be a “special attraction” match.

– TNA President Dixie Carter could be crossing over into the world of reality television. The production company behind “Real Housewives” of Beverly Hills and Orange County are working on a new “Real Housewives of Nashville” and Dixie Carter is one of the women under consideration for the show. Due to her high profile, she’s in the top tier of candidates and there’s a good chance she’ll be cast.

Update On Ric Flair’s Future, New Women’s Promotion Debuting

9

– As previously reported, Ric Flair’s first wrestling appearance since leaving TNA will be the Insane Clown Posse’s Gathering of the Juggalos show on August 12th from Cave-in-Rock, IL. Flair will hosting the event on the main stage but will not be wrestling at the event.

Almost everyone expects Ric Flair to be back in WWE when the TNA vs. WWE lawsuit dies down and WWE can find a role for him.

– A new women’s promotion called Shine will debut on July 20th in Ybor City, Florida. Affiliated with Dragon Gate and Evolve, the promotion will run regular iPPVs.

The first show, which will see Daffney as the host, will feature the following card:

Sara Del Rey vs. Jazz

Nikki Roxx vs. Rain

Veda Scott vs. Kimberly

Santana Garrett vs. Tina San Antonio

Tracy Taylor & Su Yung vs. Allysin Kay & Taylor Made

Reby Sky vs. Jayme Jameson

Mercedes Martinez vs. Leva Bates

Christina Von Eerie vs. Cherry Bomb

Detailed Ratings Breakdown For Monday’s RAW Supershow

30

Monday’s WWE RAW Supershow drew a 3.17 rating with 4.42 million viewers, virtually even with the previous week. Considering the fact that RAW was up against the MLB Home Run Derby (4.79 rating and 6.88 million viewers), the rating is considered a strong showing for WWE and a good sign of momentum headed into Sunday’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view.

Digging deeper into the numbers, A.J. Lee proved to be a big ratings draw for WWE, with the overrun segment featuring her decision of “who she was going to marry” gained 711,000 viewers. Considering the fact that the segment featured CM Punk, Daniel Bryan (typically not big ratings draws) and no John Cena, this is great news for WWE. Even more noteworthy is that the teenage male demographic, which has been hurting badly this year, saw a major spike during the overrun. Because the Punk/Bryan/AJ storyline has not moved the numbers in recent weeks, it can be assumed that the hotshot marriage angle was responsible for the uptick.

Here are some of the larger quarter hour viewership changes:

– Christian & Tyson Kidd vs. Tensai & Dolph Ziggler and Lawler vs. Cole angle lost 416,000 viewers from the previous quarter hour (AJ/Punk/Bryan opening segment & Sheamus vs. Swagger).

– Brodus Clay vs. Drew McIntyre and Stephanie McMahon talking about her and HHH renewing their vows on RAW several years ago gained 102,000 viewers.

– Heath Slater vs. Sin Cara and the Bob Backlund angle lost 21,000 viewers.

– Lawler vs. Cole and WWE revealing that Hornswoggle was the mystery RAW GM also lost 21,000 viewers.

News On TNA’s New “Impact Rewind” Show & The 3-Hour Timeslot

6

Tonight on Spike TV, TNA’s weekly programming expands to 3 hours with the addition of the 1-hour “Impact Rewind” pre-show that will air at 7pm (ET), prior to Impact.

“Impact Rewind” originally started off as a post-game show and was the creation of Eric Bischoff and Jason Harvey. Despite critical acclaim, the show was cancelled after a few months due to low ratings. Now the show returns as a lead-in show for Impact with the hope that fans will get conditioned to tuning in earlier and the beginning of Impact at 8pm (ET) will have a solid wrestling lead-in.
Impact moving to 8pm in May was done to help offset the eventual competition from the NFL, which returns in the coming weeks.

One challenge facing Rewind is that it won’t have the benefit of airing right after Impact and the occasional Impact main event that ran long and into the Rewind timeslot, helping boost Rewind ratings.

The show that used to air before Impact, World’s Worst Tenants, drew approximately 650,000 viewers. Since networks typically have a harder time selling advertising during wrestling shows, the feeling is that TNA will have to produce higher ratings than “Worst Tenants.”

Coincidentally, TNA expanding it’s weekly programming to 3-hours comes just 11 days before WWE RAW does the same thing on July 23rd.

Billy Gunn Shoots On The “Old Billy Gunn”, WWE Return and More

12

In the final part of Billy Gunn’s shoot interview, as part of his weekly “Gunn Show” series, Billy opens up like never before to talk about his troubled past, recovering from it, and the fear (by him and his family) of a relapse if he ever got the chance to go back to the WWE. Billy Gunn also talks about where he ranks the New Age Outlaws in the all-time list of best tag teams. Check out part one and part two on VegasFuelTV (youtube.com/vegasfueltv) and be sure you don’t miss part three! Brought to you by Vegas Fuel energy drink, available nationwide at Rite Aid, “The Gunn Show” airs every Wednesday. Follow “The Gunn Show” on Twitter @GunnShowTV.

Billy Gunn on the “old Billy Gunn”: “The old me…nobody liked, nobody wanted to be around. My wife didn’t want to take me anywhere, my wife didn’t want to be seen with me, my wife LEFT me. My kids didn’t want to be seen with me, they didn’t want to do anything with me, they didn’t want to see me…because I was in a bad place. I’ve got all that back. He said it would come back, I got it back because I stay on track. And I know if I go back to that place, I lose everything. This time, I lose it all. And not only do I lose it all, I probably end up dead.”

On going back to the WWE: “If they ask me to go back, I’d love to go back. I’d love to go back in a training aspect, or helping guys, or getting in the ring and showing them how to do it inside, not just tell you.”

On whether or not the New Age Outlaws are the greatest tag team of all time: “No, I wouldn’t put us as the greatest of all time, I wouldn’t do that. I’d put us right where we’re supposed to be in the top five. I think top five. I mean, that’s pretty much without tooting my own horn. And a lot of credit goes to Brian, a lot of that was him too. It wasn’t just me. He would say that too, just for the record. Brian would say we are top five.We wouldn’t be the best, but we ARE top five.”

Hear Billy also talk about his relationship with Hunter today, and whether or not he feels Hunter has honestly forgiven him. Billy holds nothing back in this powerful finale to “The Gunn Show: Shoot Edition”. Check it out and be sure to follow Billy Gunn on Twitter @RealBillyGunn. Sheamus Talks WWE’s Future, Dream Opponent, WM29 & More

46

World Heavyweight champion Sheamus was recently interviewed by Digital Spy. Here are some highlights of what Sheamus said about:

Defeating Daniel Bryan in 18 seconds at WrestleMania: “It was phenomenal. It was my second WrestleMania, I had my whole family there. I opened the WrestleMania show, became the World Heavyweight Champion in 18 seconds so a record was made there and it was an incredible experience for me, one I will never forget.”

Whether He Wanted A Longer Match: “I was happy to walk out heavyweight champion regardless! I obviously wanted to have a WrestleMania match, something special, but the problem was I just didn’t trust Daniel Bryan. The Raw before that he screwed me out of the match with Kane by using [his girlfriend] AJ as a distraction. I wasn’t sure if he was going to do that again, so it made perfect sense to me. I didn’t want him walking away or running away and getting himself disqualified or getting me disqualified. He’s done that in the past. I saw the opening with AJ, I took it, I ripped his head off and I walked out World Heavyweight Champion in a record 18 seconds.”

Why He Got Into Wrestling: “I watched it for years. I watched it since World of Sport on ITV. People like Regal, Robbie Brookside, Dave Taylor, Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy. Then Sky came along with WWE and I’ve been a fan ever since I can remember.”

The Future Of WWE: “I think we’re evolving all the time. If you look back in the ’80s at what the superstars were like and what they’re like now. We’re much more athletic. We can move better than we ever have. I think we’re the best athletes in the world. We never take any time off, we’re on the go minimum four days a week. I don’t think anyone else can do what we do, so right now we’re in a great place. We’re putting on very exciting, entertaining matches for everybody and I think that you see our fans are enjoying it more than ever.”

Suffering A Neck Injury Early In His Career: “I trained for about two and a half months and then I got hurt, I got into WWE properly in ’05. You can’t think about that. If you go in thinking that you might hurt yourself, then you’re gonna hurt yourself. You’re going to be more likely to cause something to strain or mess up. I think that you have to have a good mind about you. But it also gives us a good message to give to fans – please don’t try what we do – we’re highly trained and still injuries can occur. If you want to imitate what we do, buy the action figures or play the video games. Don’t actually physically try what we do.”

Whether He’s Looking Ahead To WrestleMania 30 Yet: “No, you can’t. You have to think one pay-per-view at a time. I’ve got the Money In The Bank match, a world title match, soon with Alberto del Rio on Monday, July 16. You’ve got to work on the next one and the one after that. You can’t look too far ahead. Obviously it’s going to be great and it’ll be here in no time, but the way you do it is one week at a time, and that’s the way I try to be successful. Keep your eye on the prize and everything else will fall into place.”

Who He Wants To Wrestle At WrestleMania: “I definitely think The Undertaker. The Undertaker is the one I want for WrestleMania XXIX or XXX. Obviously something like that would be – his streak – no-one has ever beaten him on his streak and I could be the first to ever do that.”

Doing More Acting: “I’m just concentrating on my career right now. I have a lot to achieve, a lot to accomplish. Everything else is a bonus. Don’t get me wrong, if they want me to do it and it feels right I’ll gladly do it, but WWE is right now where my priority lies.”

His Favorite Gimmick Match: “The street fight. I love a street fight. Candlesticks, chairs, brawling everywhere, not worrying about the count. Just a good old-fashioned fight where anything and everything gets picked up and used. It’s definitely my favorite match, it definitely suits me and favors me more than anything.”

Randy Orton Advertised For Title Match, Ex-WWE Talent On VH1

22

– Randy Orton, who is currently serving a 60-day suspension for his second violation of WWE’s Talent Wellness Program, is scheduled to compete in a future World Heavyweight Championship Match.
