WWE Reportedly Offers Developmental Deals To Top Indy Talent

38

WWE developmental is about to have a huge influx of new talent, including several of the world’s top independent workers. Here is an update on some of the latest rumored names headed to FCW in the coming months:

– International wrestling star PAC has signed a developmental deal. PAC is known for his death-defying style and has been called “The Man That Gravity Forgot”. He most recently worked for Dragon Gate in the US and Japan.

– Matt Taven has been offered a deal and he is currently undergoing testing. Taven worked a dark match at the most recent FCW TV taping and has worked for Ring of Honor and Dragon Gate USA.

– Sara Del Rey has been offered a developmental deal and is currently undergoing medical testing. She is been one of the top female indy workers of the past several years, with impressive runs in SHIMMER, CHIKARA and Ring of Honor.

– Mercedes Martinez is also rumored to have been offered a developmental deal after attending recent WWE tryouts at developmental.

Sources within WWE says expect to see a lot of top independent talents signed in the next few months as part of Triple H’s initiative to overhaul the developmental system.

News On Del Rio Getting More Aggressive, Title Run Planned

29

In recent weeks, we’ve seen some “ruthless aggression” from Alberto Del Rio, who has delivered brutal attacks to the likes of Sheamus and Sin Cara.

It was reported back in 2011 that Vince McMahon wanted to see a more aggressive Del Rio. WWE is now moving forward with those plans and Del Rio is expected to continue his mean streak.

Del Rio is expected to win the World Heavyweight Title sometime later this year.

Dallas Page On Whether He Was Asked To Wrestle On Raw

6

Diamond Dallas Page appeared on Busted Open, which airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday on Sirius 92 and XM 208 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Visit www.facebook.com/bustedopen for more information. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

The reaction he received last week on Raw: “I’ll tell you, more than anything, it sort of made me say, ‘Wow.’ It set me back a second, you know? I always hear DDP chants when I do these independent things but that building, I don’t think I ever wrestled there. If I did, I don’t remember because it was just a blur at that point when we were going everywhere, but I don’t remember ever coming to Laredo.

“You’d think I grew up there with the way the people were chanting. I knew they didn’t have a big segment for me to come out there and do this, and just to hit someone with the Diamond Cutter again and to hear the explosion – those DDP chants were so loud, I had to look back like seriously? Wow. I must have done something right 10-plus years ago, because I haven’t been on TV in over 10 years.”

Heath Slater: “He took an awesome Diamond Cutter. He’s a guy who grew up watching me and loving the business. He told me he loves what he’s doing right now, and it’s a great attention getter for him. People went from really hating him, to now you find people writing some really good comments about him too, and he’ll grow with his character. He’s got awesome time on primetime TV.”

Whether or not he was asked to wrestle on Raw: “No, and you know, people always bust the balls of the booking of WWE. Now, if they just booked me as another one, well then it’s just like Sid and Vader. But Johnny Ace called me up and said, ‘Hey, you want to hit someone with the Diamond Cutter on Monday night?’ I was like, ‘Sure, I’d love to.’

“The whole week I was in Louisville for a horror festival because I do a lot of those because I was Billy Ray Snapper in The Devil’s Rejects. Wrestling and horror just sort of go together. So I’d been working all week, I had to use like 3:30 in the morning to catch the flight to get down there, or I would’ve missed it, but it was worth it.

“So Johnny asked me about that, and then he told me about the Doink thing and I was like, ‘Oh that’s awesome,’ because no one knew about the Doink thing except for me, so that was an awesome secret. The people popped. There was a little bit of, ‘Oh, I thought DDP was going to come out.’ That’s what fans have told me, and then that’s why I think that pop was even better.

Whether he feels he will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame next year: “No, you know, I never would hope for that because then you never get it. If something like that comes up, that would be awesome. The reaction I would get there would be insane. That’s my home area; I really did grow up there. When it happens, it happens. I’ve said a bunch of times, and some of these jerks on the Internet will take what I say and take what I say out of context so I’m going say this really clearly for anyone who’s listening: Until Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage is in there, until Jake Roberts is in there, I can wait. Because those two were two of the greatest of all time, and I consider myself to be pretty good within my era, but those are two guys that I was a mark for.”

His appearance on WWE’s Legends of Wrestling discussing celebrities in wrestling with Jim Ross: “First of all, I love J.R. He’s just like me, he can be very opinionated … J.R. went after the easy target because it pissed him off because he was WCW too. It pissed him off that David Arquette was the world champion like it pissed off a lot of people. But every guy on the Internet that has buried that situation, let me just reverse it: Now it’s you. And for some reason, they want to make you the world champion because it’s going to get whatever. There’s not one person who wouldn’t have done what Arquette did, not one. I mean, Vince McMahon made himself the world champion. Everybody wants to be the man, and that’s understandable.

“So getting that out of the way, when I told David, he started laughing. He was like, ‘Yeah, right.’ And I was like, ‘They really want to do it.’ He said, ‘We can’t do that. No, I can’t do that.’ And then I said, ‘They’re going to do it no matter what. You’re here, they want to do it. Unless you’re going to adamantly say no, they want to do it.’ So they talked him into it and he did it, and I wanted J.R. to know. But I thought it was the stupidest thing ever too; they didn’t have to preach to the choir to me about it because I felt the same way. But I said, ‘Did you know that David Arquette made like $10,000 for that spot or something, and he gave it to Melanie Pillman?’ When [Jim Ross] heard that, finally his demeanor changed.

“One of the things that J.R. said was that it’s all about what that celebrity brings to the company. Well if that’s the case, no one besides maybe Mike Tyson being involved in wrestling brought as much PR. Because at the time, we just got done with the ‘98 NBA Playoffs. The Bulls against the Jazz. Rodman against [Malone]. They were diving on the floor for balls against each other. Rodman didn’t show up on Monday night for practice because he went to Nitro to hit me with a chair. And when Rodman did it the first time, it got a lot of attention, but it’s Rodman. He’s a wild man. He’s a freak show. He’ll do anything for PR, that type of thing. But when Karl Malone did it, the world shook its head and went what? It was the biggest pay-per-view ever.

How he developed as a wrestler: “I’m in Germany [in 1994] and I’m getting done with a match with Jim Duggan. I’m the curtain jerker. I’m the first guy out. I come back through the curtain; it’s like our sixth day on the road. Hogan grabs me and pulls me over. He goes, ‘How you doing it?’ I go, ‘Doing it? Doing what?’ He said, ‘Getting so much better.’ I was like, ‘Well Hulk, thanks.’ He said, ‘No seriously, how are you doing it?’ Now Hulk had just come in; this was his big first tour he was doing that wasn’t TV. He said, ‘They got you on the road like this where you’re learning your craft right?’

I said, ‘No, Hulk, no.’ He goes, ‘What do you mean?’ I said, ‘The only reason I’m on this tour is because we’re in Germany, and my last real name is Falkenberg. And, I got a smoking hot wife who walks me to the ring. That’s the only reason I’m here.’ He goes, ‘Well, how are you getting so much better?’ and I tried to explain to him that I went back to the Power Plant and started training guys. Because what I found out was the more I taught guys, the more I learned. It applies to everything, I don’t care what it is.

“If you teach someone your craft, while you’re teaching them, you’re going to learn because you’re going to get better at teaching, which is going to make you better at whatever you’re doing. In my case, it made me a better worker. And he didn’t understand that because he had territories when he came up, and Hulk is only about two and a half years older than I am, you have to remember that. Hulk had said to me, ‘Whatever you’re doing, you need to keep doing it. Because it’s not today, or next year, or the year after but somewhere down the line, because of your character and how you make people believe, you have the ability to draw huge money with me.’ So four years later, I walk out on that stage with Karl Malone, and Rodman and Hogan are there. It was the biggest press conference I’d ever seen that morning. It was crazy.”

WWE’s The Very Best of WCW Monday Nitro DVD: “The Very Best of Nitro, from what I know right now, is the second-best selling DVD in the last 3 years. So what does that tell you? The new people are getting to see it, the new WWE nation that had never seen that stuff, because it’s timeless. When I first got the script for The Very Best of Nitro, I didn’t call them back and Michael Calabrese, the producer, what a great guy he is. They sent me that script and he called me up and he goes, ‘Hey D, did you get the script? What did you think?’ I said, ‘I don’t think you want me to do this,’ and he goes, ‘What do you mean?’ I go, ‘I wouldn’t say a lot of the things in here,’ and he said, ‘Well, what do you mean?’

“I said, ‘Michael, I understand that history is written by the winners and I get that you guys won the war, so you can say what you want to say but we kicked your ass for almost two years. I was there. It was David and Goliath and we killed you in the ratings, so I’m not going to backhand compliment WCW ever. Did we make mistakes? Hell yeah, and I’ll talk about that, but I’m not going to act like it never happened. I’m just not going to do that; you should get someone else to do that.’ He said, ‘Well, what are the things you’re talking about?’ I went, ‘Boom, boom, boom’ and he went, ‘No problem, change it.’ I was like, ‘Really?’ He said, ‘Yeah man, we want this to be good.’ I was like, ‘OK, cool.’

His rising popularity in WCW: “I remember wrestling on Monday night in Panama City, and that was the first time those kids were chanting DDP so loud and I had just started my feud with Scott and Kevin. It was just starting to take off and when I walked back through the curtain again, Hulk’s there. He goes, ‘Do you know how hard that is? It’s starting to happen.’ Hulk Hogan over periods of time would tell me different things, and that was one of them. He said, ‘It’s so hard to get them to chant your name like that, but once you got that, you got something big. It was an awesome ride.”

Whether Vince McMahon ever contacted him about joining WWE during the Monday Night Wars: “No, he would never do that. Anybody who said he did, I would really tend not to believe that because Vince was not going to get in that potential lawsuit. Vince is way too smart for that on so many levels. But Steve Austin had called me once after a match I had with I can’t remember who; I want to say it was Hogan. He said, ‘How the hell did you bring that match out of him?’ Because there’s never been any love lost with Hulk and Steve. But they got respect of course, how could they not? But Austin had said, ‘If you ever want to come on up here, it’d be a pretty easy trip for you.’ It was like that. Maybe they thought because of my affiliation with Bischoff and all that stuff, I never would’ve left.”

His run in WWE: “I always saw myself working a WrestleMania. There was no question. The run that I had, which really was like four months in the WWE; it wasn’t great. But my opening day was great. My opening day was humongous. And then WrestleMania was pretty much my closing card. I did one Raw after that, but that WrestleMania 18 match that I had with Christian, that was a hell of a match. And then being able to show up now and getting that reaction; hitting that Cutter and getting that pop, I literally can fade off into the sunset very easily. Bottom line is, it was what it was and it was a great ride.”

TNA DESTINATION X RESULTS: Aries Wins TNA Championship

54

TNA Destination X opens with a video package looking back at the main event feud between TNA Champion Bobby Roode and Austin Aries and the X Division theme of tonight’s PPV.

The pyro hits and Mike Tenay welcomes us to the show. He immediately begins hyping the fact that there will be a new X Division Champion crowned tonight before turning his attention to the main event. Tenay and JB run down the card, and it’s looking like it’s going to be a pretty good show on paper.

The Last Chance qualifying match for the Ultimate X match is going to open the show as Rubix is the first wrestler to make his way out for the match. Mason Andrews is the next man to the ring.

Dakota Darsow vs. Rubix vs. Lars Only vs. Mason Andrews

Lars Only is out next to a bit of heat, and Dakota Darsow is the final man to head to the ring, also getting a bit of heat from the crowd.

The bell rings and Darsow and Only are sent to the floor. Mason and Rubix square off in the ring with a bit of chain wrestling around on the mat. Rubix hits a low dropkick that sends Mason out to the floor. Only comes in from behind and hits a hurricanrana to send Rubix to the outside. Darsow is in and he eats a couple of arm drags from Only.

Darsow fights up and slams Only to the mat before sending Rubix and Andrews from the apron and turning back to Only with a series of elbow drops. Darsow takes Only into the corner, whipping him across the ring, but he’s rolled up. Only rolls from the ring and Rubix hits a top rope cross body to Darsow out of nowhere. Darsow is able to retaliate by throwing Rubix to the mat and hitting a sit out front suplex for two. Only pops into the match and gets caught in a submission from Darsow. Mason comes in and kicks him in the face. Only tries to spear Darsow through the ropes, but both men have a bit of a tough time and end up tangled in the ropes. Mason busts out a beautiful dive to the outside on top of Only and Darsow. Rubix, not to be outdone, does a nice flippy back dive.

Rubix rolls Andrews back into the ring, but he’s caught up in an arm bar. Rubix fights to the ropes, and Kid Kash is shown watching on in the back. Andrews transitions into a kimura but it’s broken up by Only. Only hits a stunner/neckbreaker combo on Andrews and Jigsaw with a kick to Darsow for good measure. Only locks Andrews in a front face lock, but it’s broken up by Darsow. Only sends Darsow from the ring, but he’s pushed into the corner by Mason. Mason runs into Only’s boot. Only heads to the top, but he’s stopped by Darsow.

Andrews kicks Darsow in the face and heads up after Only. Andrews hits a superplex and Darsow powerbombs them both. Rubix hits a coast to coast corner dropkick to Andrews, springboarding out of nowhere, and everyone is down.

Darsow hits Mason with a neckbreaker. Rubix hits Darsow with a kick. Only plants Rubix’s face into the canvas and Rubix falls to the outside. Only turns to Andrews, fighting off a move, but catching a knee to the face, and a big cutter. Andrews pins Only, and he gets the three.

Winner and Qualifier for Ultimate X later tonight: Mason Andrews

Kid Kash vs. Mason Andrews:

Kid Kash runs down to the ring and goes right to work on Andrews. Kash beats on Andrews around the ring before bringing Mason back into the ring and standing on his chest for a pin. Mason is able to kick out at two, but Kash mounts him and rains down punches. Kash goes for a couple more pins, but Mason won’t stay down. Kash sends Andrews into the ropes, but Andrews comes up with a couple of beautiful dropkicks. Andrews goes for a crucifix pin, but Kash kicks out. Kash hots shots Andrews on the top rope.

Kash slaps away at Andrews. Andrews tries to fight back, but Kash simply kicks him in the chest for another two count. Kash takes Andrews into the ropes and hits him with several clubbing blows across the face. Kash pulls Mason to his feet and suplexes him down hard for another near fall.

Kash puts Andrews down with a backbreaker before heading to the middle rope for a double sledge. Kash slams Mason to the mat, flips him off and slaps him, then pins him for two. Kash beats on Andrews, but Andrews tries to fight back, running right into a clothesline. Kash flips off the audience before dropping and elbow and burying more kicks in Andrews’ chest. Kash locks in a crazy key lock hold, but Mason won’t give up.

Mason goes for an opening, but catches a big kick to the face. Kash hits Andrews with a big chop to the chest before kicking him and sending him to the outside. Kash sends Andrews back into the ring, following and slamming him to the mat hard. Kash heads up to the middle rope and jumps to the top for a nice moonsault, but Andrews gets his knees up and Kash crashes and burns.

Andrews gets some offense going with a back elbow, clothesline and dropkick. Kash misses a charge in the corner and eats a hurricanrana. Andrews heads to the top and hits a missile dropkick, but it’s only good for two. Andrews hits a running high knee, but it’s still not enough to put away Kash. Andrews whips Kash across the ring. Kash goes for a sunset flip but Andrews rolls through. Neither man can get a roll up. Kash knees Andrews in the face. He goes to do it again, but Andrews surprises Kash with a roll up. He (really this time) qualifies for Ultimate X.

Winner and going on to Ultimate X: Mason Andrews

Christopher Daniels Talks TNA’s Presentation, Facing AJ Styles

3

Promoting tonight’s TNA Destination X pay-per-view, Christopher Daniels spoke to Scott Fishman of The Miami Herald to discuss his current role in TNA Wrestling, wrestling AJ Styles, the Claire Lynch storyline, Austin Aries and more. Highlights from the article are as follows:

Appearing on live episodes of Impact Wrestling: “For me personally, the fact that we are live, and that they have put me in the final segment the last couple of times, it’s a lot of pressure. It’s good pressure. It’s something I look forward to and something I am trying to excel at. I feel like when they put that microphone in my hand at the last possible second, I believe I have delivered. I plan on continuing to deliver. I want to keep being that guy for TNA. If we continue to be live after the summer, I feel like the company has proven we can do it. It’s just another step forward for the company.”

TNA’s presentation of its backstage segments, from traditional to more of a candid look: “Guys like Eric [Bischoff] and Jason Hervey have come to us with a more fresh and on-the-fly way of doing it, rather than just giving us a script. I feel like it has helped us sharpen our skills. I’ll be walking backstage, and all of a sudden, Jason will come up to me with a camera asking questions. You are answering right off the top of your head, and it’s a more realistic feeling. It’s a more honest answer that you are giving. It’s definitely different… There is a must-see sort of mentality to our television shows. The fact that we are going live and doing so much reality based or hidden camera based, there is an idea that the fans have to tune in. It’s not a matter of when we were taped where they could read spoilers on the Internet. They have to watch and see how it rolls. They are getting surprised and caught off guard with what we are doing. I think it’s awesome.”

AJ Styles’ grappling ability: “AJ is one of the best in the world. We have great chemistry together that the challenge for us after so many years of wrestling each other is somehow keeping it fresh. This particular match is a Last Man Standing match, so it will make that a little bit easier because it’s a completely different mindset. As far as getting in the ring with someone the caliber of AJ, I’m never bored with it. There is always the challenge to make it great and make it different for the fans. That is what I appreciate it.”

Facing AJ Styles this year compared to last year: “The truth of the matter is last year I was sort of treading water when the match came around. It didn’t seem like the company had a lot of plans for me or at least the plans that they had for me beginning with that match. There wasn’t a whole lot going on for me before Destination X. Now that we have had this sort of thing going on for pretty much the whole year, I feel like I am in a better position with the company. I feel like I contributed more this year than in the last. With the previous match, it was just a marquee matchup. It was a technical exhibition style match. This one is going to have a little bit more blood behind it.”

Austin Aries’ rise in TNA: “Austin Aries right now is on the top of his game. Everything he seems to be doing has been coming up aces, and he has parlayed that into a world title shot. If you watch even last week, we saw the appearance of Sonjay Dutt on our shows. I feel like he is going to be somebody in the next couple of months we will be talking about how good he is and start to show back up on our television. Rubix, Mason Andrews and Rashad Cameron, those guys last week also had opportunity and hit home runs in my opinion. I think they did great. Even in defeat, I think Rubix and Mason Andrews were great and hope they get an opportunity with the company to continue. Another good thing about Destination X is we always give X Division guys an opportunity. Last year where we had guys like Kid Kash returning to the company based on his performance at Destination X. I hope these guys get the same opportunity and if they do, I think they are going to do great things with it.”

Claire Lynch storyline: “As far as the story goes, we are right on track where we want to go. I think people who are upset with the storyline are assuming that they know the end or where this is going, and they don’t. So I just tell people who are upset to just wait and see what happens. I know there was a lot of speculation about the introduction of Claire, but that wasn’t a last minute decision. It’s something we thought about for a while. You just need to see where it goes. This is something that has been thought out. If the people give it the same amount of chance that we put into it, the amount of effort we put into it, I think they are going to be happy with the end result.”

This week on Are You Serious?, a clip is featured of (Ultimate) Warrior tormenting Hollywood Hogan backstage through a mirror on WCW Monday Nitro. While the clip airs, Road Dogg and Josh Mathews ponder what Warrior may be foretelling Hogan, such as alimony payments, the box office returns for Santa with Muscles and the end result of PastaMania.

“It’s official, WCW jumps the shark,” Josh Mathews says after baring witness to the clip. Road Dogg adds, “WCW ruined Hulk Hogan. They ruined the Ultimate Warrior. It didn’t help Eric Bischoff any, that’s for sure.” Mathews responds, “Bret Hart’s career really didn’t skyrocket when he went to WCW.”

Road Dogg concludes, “Remember kids, WCW ruins everything, including Billy Kidman’s career.”

Also featured are clips of Juventud Guerrera taking a tumble during his ring entrance at the 1996 WCW Fall Brawl pay-per-view event, Al Snow’s various incarnations and the Playboy Buddy Rose “Blow Away” diet.

Daniel Puder Talks About Almost Breaking Kurt Angle’s Arm

35

WrestleShark.com recently caught up with former WWE $1,000,000 Tough Enough winner Daniel Puder to discuss his time in the company and plans for the future. Here are some of the highlights below.

The full interview, including his thoughts about the other Tough Enough contestants, training with Hardcore Holly, the infamous Kurt Angle shoot on Smackdown, his opinion of Al Snow as a trainer, his time in ROH and launching the MyLifeMyPower anti-bullying charity can be found here or by searching WrestleShark in the iTunes store.

Daniel Puder tries to make Kurt Angle tap out in an unscripted manner during a 2004 episode of SmackDown: “It’s funny, before that entire thing they made us run sprints to start the day, then they brought us in for a pasta eating contest. Two guys puked from it. I’m sitting there, and I knew they were gonna run us again…they had us in the ring doing an up down competition…they told the ref to get the blond guy out of the ring. Chris and I were both blond. So Kurt Angle wrestled him, broke three of his ribs, he rolled out and Kurt came over and said who wants a chance, I raised my hand as fast as I could. Just because, I knew that I wrestled, my old coach was Danny Shay…Danny only lost to him in the Olympic trials by a couple of points, so I knew I had trained with guys that are as good as him. I wasn’t really scared of him, plus I had the MMA stuff and I knew he wasn’t really into that as much. So I got in there, they said the rules were no striking…and I caught him in a key lock…he’s a strong guy. He’s freakin’ strong. So I caught him in a key lock, pulled him into a Kamura and tried to snap his arm off. It nearly worked, you guys can see how close it was…I’m guessing it was five seconds away from snapping.”

How Angle responded to the incident: “Oh Kurt was very very upset, [laughs] yeah he doesn’t like me too much for some reason. But he’s a wimp you know. If the guy was really tough he’d say like ‘OK lets have a fight’, you know. Even Dana White offered him $2-3 million dollars to fight me and he turned it down. I’m pretty sure you guys would fight me for $2-3 million dollars [laughs] that’s a lot of money.

“He yelled at me, he got pretty upset. I said ‘hey, I’m playing by the rules, they told me no striking’. I was being respectful, you know, because I was in his world. But you know, if he came to my gym and did something dumb, outside the rules, I probably would have broken him right there. I would have knocked him out, made him cry like a girl.”

On walking away from professional wrestling and starting MyLifeMyPower: “Well, I dunno if you guys have heard, but I launched MyLifeMyPower and created this whole program for kids and teens. I been travelling around the country speaking to you know, the National PTA, next week I’m in Miami with 250 chiefs of police, week after I’m in Reno with 1000 resource and police officers who work in schools nationwide. I looked at…I could be on TV wrestling in front of a couple million people everyweek, or I could be fighting on NBC or Showtime…but at the end of the day, what do I get done? What can I do that will leave my mark on society and our culture. I’d love to still wrestle…but I want to be able to change the culture of our youth.

MyLifeMyPower.org is the charity, the main thing we’re going for is, we don’t tell kids no…we try to ask the right questions…our idea is not to tell kids “don’t do this, don’t do that”, I wanna encourage kids. A lot of kids are trained the wrong way or just not trained at all, and they just succumb to their environment…our program is goal setting, mentoring, leadership, character development, personal branding. We’ve had over 300 celebrities and pro-athletes film videos and PSA’s. We’re gonna start launching some on Youtube. We give schools different videos every week…It’s stuff kids don’t learn in School…A lot of kids you ask ‘hey what do you wanna do?’ and they go ‘oh I wanna be a vetenarian’ and I said ‘OK how are you going to get there?’. So we ask them the right questions, get the right answers and it drives them to become more successful.”
