JBL Talks About His Hawk Gimmick, APA, WCW & More

25

UK Sun interview with JBL
Host: Rob McNichol

John Layfield on the on the genesis of the JBL character: “Shane McMahon saw me walking to Madison Square Garden one time in a suit, cowboy hat and boots. He said ‘That’s the character.’ He liked the look. It took a year or two after that. I mentioned something about doing this character. I thought in my mind about the character J.R. Ewing from the TV show “Dallas.” That was my idea. Vince McMahon will tell you it has nothing to do with J.R. Ewing. In his mind it was a blow up of my life, an embellishment of some of the things I was doing.

“For many years they didn’t really want me to be a bad guy, because I was doing so much with the troops. But a lot of things happened at once. Big Show got hurt, Brock Lesnar had left the company, Undertaker was out, Kurt Angle was hurt, and they needed somebody to wrestle Eddie Guerrero, and so they said ‘Hey, let’s create this character of JBL.’ That’s when the thing started.

“Vince McMahon always thought (the character) could be a World Champion, but other than one or two people, nobody thought it could be. I didn’t know. I had no idea if it could be or not. We had it as a scheduled main event against Eddie and after about two weeks it was falling horribly flat. I really wondered if it was going to work. They needed me for that main event in Los Angeles where the Pay Per View was. We had about six weeks lead up time, which was good. They were going to push at least that Pay Per View. Thank goodness it was Eddie Guerrero.

“Eddie was just fantastic. If it had been anyone else it may have been a one-shot deal. Eddie took a lot of interest in helping me with that character, and the match worked. That’s why the character got extended and ended up becoming a main event character for quite a while. But it was never a sure thing. Fortunately I had the right guy to wrestle, and I had the right circumstance happen around it.”

On Justin ‘Hawk’ Bradshaw: “I thought it was great! But it didn’t work. I was friends with Stan Hansen, and when I came in they told me ‘wrestle like Stan Hansen’. I knew that style well. I wrestled with Stan in Japan, I was a big fan of his. I pretty much had that style anyway. After three months the character was going nowhere and they said, ‘John, what are you doing? If we want Stan Hansen, we’ll bring in Stan Hansen.’

“I said ‘OK, how do you want me to wrestle?’ They said ‘Wrestle like Barry Windham.’ Three months later they bring in Barry Windham! I learned a lot from Barry. I learned a lot about wrestling, about how to carry yourself, a lot of different things I learned from Barry. That really helped me.”

On the backstage APA skits: “Those things were so loosely scripted. They would literally give us kind of an idea and roll the cameras. It was so much fun. Ron was so great to play off of. He has such a great presence. That thing worked phenomenally. Vince came up to me one day and said ‘I want to put that on tape’. I said, ‘What?’ and he said, ‘You and Ron, drinking beer and telling stories.’

“That day they created the APA office. They were building it, and Ron walked in and saw just the door and said ‘Leave it like that.’ They said, ‘What do you mean? There are no walls.’ He said, ‘that’s perfect.’ It was just stupid. I love doing fun stuff like that. It was so silly. It was a lot of fun.”

On whether there was tension between WCW and WWF workers during the Invasion: “Any time you have two separate entities merge together, there is going to be, inherently, some personality conflict. It’s been a long time since I thought about it, but I don’t remember too many problems with guys coming in. A lot of it was storyline, and a lot of it was perpetuated backstage. Rumors were allowed to grow, because we wanted it to seem like it was really happening.

“I never had a problem with any of those guys. People were trying to make everything look like a shoot. Some rumors got out – ‘Hey, these guys really hate each other’ – but that really wasn’t the case.”

Carter Congratulates Flair’s WWE Hall of Fame Induction

43

Legacy Talent, which represents Ric Flair, issued the following press release:

TNA IMPACT WRESTLING Star Ric Flair® to Attend WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Flair Confirms He Will be Present in Miami When the Four Horsemen Receive Their Hall of Fame Honor

CHARLOTTE, NC – (March 27, 2012) International celebrity the Nature Boy® Ric Flair is set to become the only wrestler in history to be inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Hall of Fame twice. Flair’s dominant 1980s wrestling group, the Four Horsemen, known to be the greatest in ring performers of all time, will be granted their seat in the Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Miami, FL on March 31st, the day before Wrestlemania XXVIII. Flair will be inducted along-side fellow members of the Four Horsemen: Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham, and J.J. Dillon.

The news of Flair’s second induction was followed by a firestorm of controversy. Questions flew about whether Flair would attend the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony as he is currently under contract with Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling. Understanding what a huge honor this is for Flair, TNA is graciously supporting him in the decision to attend the Hall of Fame ceremony alongside his fellow inductees.

“Being inducted once was one of the greatest accomplishments of my career, so I’m humbled and honored to be recognized again. I wouldn’t miss the ceremony for the world,” says Flair.

TNA President Dixie Carter says, “We are proud of Ric’s many accomplishments and contributions he has made to the world of professional wrestling and beyond. We wish to congratulate him on yet another honor he truly deserves.”

Flair, a 16-time World Heavyweight Champion, was inducted individually into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008. On becoming a two-time inductee his agent Melinda Morris Zanoni of Legacy Talent and Entertainment says, “We are all so proud to be watching Ric continue to make history. There will never be an athlete more deserving of wearing two Hall of Fame rings than Ric Flair.”

For more information on Ric Flair go to www.ricflair.com, follow him on Facebook: Ric Flair, The Nature Boy, or on Twitter: @RicFlairNatrBoy. Flair is currently with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. TNA airs Thursday nights (9/8c) on Spike TV with monthly 3-hour Per-Per-View events.

Ric Flair To Appear At WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

32

WWE.com announced Tuesday afternoon that Ric Flair will be present at the 2012 WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Miami’s American Airlines Arena on Saturday.

“The Nature Boy,” who was originally inducted as a singles wrestler in 2008, will enter the Hall a record second time alongside fellow Four Horsemen Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham and JJ Dillon. The story does not mention whether he will appear onstage, nor that he is affiliated to TNA Wrestling.

F4WOnline.com reported last week that TNA Wrestling was open to Flair appearing at the event and that they weren’t asking for for much in compensation.

The induction ceremony will air on USA on Monday, April 2 at 8 p.m.

CM Punk On His Relationship With Vince, Wrestling Sites, Rock

52

WWE Champion CM Punk spoke to Luis Gomez of the Chicago Tribune this week to hype Sunday’s WrestleMania 28 pay-per-view. Here are some highlights of what Punk said about:

Vince McMahon: “(We) have a lot more one-on-one conversations. I wont say he takes the time to talk to me now, because he always did, but I think he views me differently now. He used to view me as maybe talking to a boy. Now he thinks he’s talking to a man after I stood up and did everything I did over the summer. I always thought I was a main event player. The difference is now he knows I’m a main event player.”

Wrestling websites: “I think you have to (read them). Anybody who dismisses it — that’s (crap). You have to have your fingers on the pulse of everything. You have to read it.”

The Rock: “I don’t think I have a realtionship with The Rock. Over the past few weeks, it’s been better. Probably because I’ve been outspoken (about him) in the media. Of course, everything gets sensationalized and twisted. I don’t hate The Rock or fault him for coming back. I just think heaping credit on The Rock for ratings, buyrates – that’s where I get offended. It’s a team effort 365 days a year. Me and the entire locker room bust our (butts) and all our super stoked. Give credit where credit is due. Wrestlemania had a huge buyrate last year, not because of one guy. The numbers out there prove he hasn’t done much else, like the Survivor Series buyrate.”

CM Punk & Steve Austin Teasing WrestleMania 29 Match

66

WrestleMania 29 Main Event ?

WrestleMania 28 is just days away – but it appears a blockbuster dream match is already taking shape for next year’s big event.

WWE Champion CM Punk sent a tweet to “Stone Cold” Steve Austin on Monday night that simply stated, “29, son” – presumably an indication that Punk is looking to wrestle Austin at WrestleMania 29.

Austin, not one to back down from a challenge, responded with:

“Just worry about 28. If the stars all line up I always have a big can of Whoop Ass ready to take to NYC. #rogerthat“

Austin and Punk have exchanged messages on Twitter for months, both expressing interest in a match with one another. Austin has stated in multiple interviews that he has one more match left in him – and if he could wrestle anybody, it would likely be CM Punk.

Vince McMahon Fired Up, Christian Off WrestleMania 28 Card

62

— On Monday’s RAW, WWE ran an angle where CM Punk finally snapped as a result of Chris Jericho’s taunting and delivered a devastating beatdown on Christian. It was announced during RAW that Christian was injured and “was medically ruled out” of the Team Laurinaitis vs. Team Long match at WrestleMania 28. WWE.com is reporting that Christian re-aggravated his neck injury and cannot compete this Sunday.

No word yet on whether Christian is legitimately injured, but the fact that he’s been pulled from WrestleMania just days before the show is an indication he is indeed injured.

Drew McIntyre will replace Christian on Team Laurinaitis.

— Vince McMahon is said to be “fired up” as WrestleMania 28 approaches this weekend.

McMahon apparently made several revisions to the RAW script on Monday and has not been indecisive at all. One source backstage described him as “energetic.”

Vince also apparently struck up several random meetings with talent backstage to talk about their storylines, which is unlike him.

— Chris Jericho’s representatives have negotiated an extension on his current WWE deal, which was originally for six months. The challenger for CM Punk’s WWE Championship at WrestleMania has extended his contract for several months, and will be “full time” in WWE through the summer.

It is not known what happens to the Fozzy concert tour that was originally scheduled for the summer, but Jericho’s tenure in WWE for what he has been jokingly calling “this tour of duty” has been confirmed as “extended,” which means he will either continue feuding with CM Punk or be a major part of the WWE draft to help the Smackdown brand after WrestleMania.

WWE Star Looking To Retire Soon?, WWE Highlights Goldberg

116

— The latest issue of WWE Magazine suggests that a WWE Superstar competing at next Sunday’s WrestleMania XXVIII pay-per-view event will be retiring from in-ring competition in the near future.

The Informer writes, “A seasoned Superstar has been recently saying that this will be his last ‘Mania, but not necessarily his last WWE match.”

— The front page of WWE.com has placed the spotlight on Goldberg as they are directing users to his Alumni profile. WWE.com writes of the former champion, “Charge into the official Alumni profile of Goldberg, the powerhouse competitor who speared through WCW and WWE.”

“Bogus!! False!! Lie!! Completely made up!! Too much?:-),”

— According to the following press release, WWE talent will be on hand for a free VIP concert Lilian Garcia is holding this Wednesday from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Gibson Miami Showroom (located at 180 NE 39th St Miami, Florida 33255). — Retired Puerto Rican wrestler Chicky Starr was backstage visiting at Saturday’s Raw live event in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

— WWE will hold a live event at Atlantic Pavilion in Lisbon, Portugal on Saturday, November 10, 2012.

WM 28 Competitor Maria Menounos Suffers Two Broken Ribs

61

In an injury that could affect this Sunday’s WrestleMania XXVIII Divas Tag Team Match featuring Kelly Kelly and Maria Menounos against Beth Phoenix and Eve, New York Post gossip column Page Six reported Monday that the Menounos broke a rib during a recent dancing rehearsal for Dancing with the Stars.

She broke the rib during a hardcore rehearsal with dance partner Derek Hough, who was teaching her the Cha-cha-cha. A source says, “She has been in excruciating pain for the past few weeks during rehearsals, but she is staying strong and working through it. She refuses to give up.”

Page Six adds Menounos is hiding a rib brace underneath her dancing gear.

Menounos confirmed the injury to Extra Monday, the entertainment news program she hosts. She says she suffered two broken ribs during a recent dance rehearsal. She will nonetheless perform on tonight’s Dancing with the Stars.

WWE Says Cena Has Advantage Over Rock, Punk Meets Schiavone

59

— The latest issue of WWE Magazine gives an “insider’s take” on each major match-up at next Sunday’s WrestleMania XXVIII pay-per-view event and says John Cena has the “advantage” over The Rock in their bout.

WWE writes of the match: “What does a win at The Show of Shows mean for each of these competitors? Does hearing that three-count signify that the winner is the greatest of all time? Where does one go after a loss? For The Rock, it’s back to Hollywood. For John Cena, it’s back to Monday nights, weekend live events and main-eventing yet another pay-per-view. And maybe that’s why Cena has the edge in this fight, because even if he loses at WrestleMania XXVIII, he’s still doing what he’s always wanted to—and no one can take that away from him. Not even The Rock.

“ADVANTAGE: JOHN CENA.”

— CM Punk took part in a WrestleMania XXVIII media blitz this morning in Atlanta, Georgia and noted talking to former WCW announcer Tony Schiavone at one point. He tweeted, “Just chatted with Tony Schiavone! That was awesome!”

Schiavone, who is the Sports Director of WSB Atlanta, said of the WWE Champion on Twitter, “Just met C.M. Punk . He was at the radio station. Very talented guy, as I’m sure you know.”

WWE Posts Final WCW Monday Nitro, Kelly’s Favorite ’80s Star

18

— Today marks the eleven year anniversary of the final episode of WCW Monday Nitro. The show began with Vince McMahon appearing via satellite from Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, the site of that evening’s Raw is War broadcast on TNN, announcing that he had purchased World Championship Wrestling. The show ended with a simulcast on Raw with an appearance by Shane McMahon on Nitro as he interrupted his father’s gloating over the purchase to explain that he actually owned WCW.

WWE has posted several clips from the episode including Ric Flair’s emotional WCW farewell speech, Booker T vs. Scott Steiner: in a Title vs. Title Match, Shane Helms vs. Chavo Guerrero in a Cruiserweight Title Match, Sean O’Haire and Chuck Palumbo vs. Lance Storm and Mike Awesome, Shawn Stasiak vs. Bam Bam Bigelow, Vince McMahon firing Jeff Jarrett, Sting vs. Ric Flair and Shane McMahon saying he bought WCW.

— Kelly Kelly says “The Enforcer” Arn Anderson is her favorite ’80s Superstar. She says of the 2012 WWE Hall of Fame inductee to WWE Magazine in an interview, “I admire everything he accomplished in the ring. He was the greatest bad guy ever.”

She also reveals the best thing about being on the road as a WWE Diva: “Traveling with the girls. We have a lot fun getting in trouble together.”

Sheamus Hypes His WM28 Match & Predicts Rock vs. Cena

32

2012 Royal Rumble winner Sheamus was interviewed this week by HollywoodLife.com to hype Sunday’s WrestleMania pay-per-view. Aside from a few fluff questions about which female actress he wants to kiss on screen and what he loves the most about his fans, he also talked about wanting to steal the show at WrestleMania and gave his prediction for the big Rock vs. Cena match. Here’s what the Celtic Warrior said about:

His Prediction for Rock vs. Cena: “It’s always controversial to pick the winner and a hard thing to do, but I honestly think that John Cena is going to come up the winner on April 1st,” Sheamus said. “Both of them are icons, both are legends, both have achieved so much. Cena is here night and day and I think that will take its toll on The Rock, who has been back for one match. But Cena is the one without the ring rust and the one who I think will win at WrestleMania.”

His Match With Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania: “For two up and coming superstars, we are looking to steal the show,” said Sheamus. “We are hungry and we have spent a lot of time getting to where we are today. Whether it was on the independent scene where we scratched and clawed, we want to be where John Cena and The Rock are, we want to be where The Undertaker and Triple H are, so you are looking at two guys who really want to go out there and steal the show!”

Ex-TNA Employees Explain Why Christian Left TNA For WWE

20

4 new chapters from former Barbaric Wrestling Radio host Brett Buchanan’s The Genesis of TNA free e-book have been released on BarbaricWrestling.com and TNAbook.net. The new chapters are about Christian Cage’s TNA run, Samoa Joe, Scott D’Amore booking committee (which includes a story about a TNA employee leaking news), and TNA’s scramble to find a TV deal in the summer of 2005. You can read all 18 chapters that have been released thus far simply by entering ‘The Genesis of TNA’ section on BarbaricWrestling.com. New chapters are released every Monday. Also check out some free shoot interviews with many wrestlers and MMA fighters including Rob Van Dam, Samoa Joe, Rampage Jackson, Jay Lethal, and many more to come on Barbaric Wrestling Radio’s YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/BWRofficial. Below is an excerpt from The Genesis of TNA ‘Chapter 18: Christian Cage’ about Christian’s TNA run and the reason he left.

LARRY ZBYSZKO: I liked Christian, but again here’s the deal with guys like Christian. Christian I think is a great talent in terms of working and watching him on TV but he’s not a big money draw. What TNA was doing is they would get guys that every wrestling fan knows is a mid card guy and they try to put him off like a superstar. So all they’re basically doing is saying hey we’re TNA and we’ve got all of Vince’s left over guys that you don’t care about anymore. They really should have made their own stars and forget bringing in Christian, bringing in other guys maybe outside of a couple. Or if you do it do it right bring Christian in and have the TNA guys beat him and then get Christian out of there, so it looks like the TNA guys are great.

In November 2008 Christian decided to leave TNA and return to WWE when his contract expired. Many rumors spread that he was frustrated with Jeff Jarrett’s creative vision of TNA and that he was upset with the way he was being used, stories spread regarding this as far back as 2007. Despite this, the main reason Christian left TNA was because WWE were simply offering him more money.

RUDY CHARLES: I was really disappointed when he left, I think I’m not sure what the whole situation was, probably came down to money is my opinion. He probably wanted X amount, and there was a bidding war between TNA and WWE and WWE won. He was a professional, even when he knew he was going out the last thing you saw of Christian Cage on TNA was getting beat down by the Main Event Mafia but he was a pro to the end. He went out and did his job and helped get those guys over, I think he’s a true professional.

PETEY WILLIAMS: I remember when he left [in 2008], at that point it was a whole different locker room morale than when we first got down to Orlando, what was that 2004 or something. It was just totally different, I don’t know if you could just see the change because I’m one of the few guys who had been there from 2004 to that point. It was like a whole different company, it didn’t seem like everybody was on the same page. It almost felt like everybody was out for themselves. I think they were, I think Christian did the right thing he was looking out for himself. He’s probably like this isn’t for me I’m going to go back. Honestly I know he took a big pay cut to come to TNA, he was making way more in WWE. I think he just wanted to have a change really, see if he could elevate this company. He had a lot of great matches and stuff like that did a lot of great things for TNA, that’s what I’m thinking now that he decided that he did as much as he could with TNA and I’m going back. I’m going where the money is.

SONJAY DUTT: I heard it was over pay, but if you put yourself in this guys shoes if he’s got an opportunity to go back to Vince [McMahon] and make the money that he was making compared to what he’s doing in TNA. Also man a lot of the time for guys it’s not just about the money but it’s about being presented in a bigger light, and he wanted to do other stuff I think he wants to do acting and stuff and maybe WWE is the ticket to jumpstart himself into other ventures and stuff. Guys that have been there and done that and then come to TNA they sometimes at a point, I think you kind of realize the ventures I want to do, maybe this isn’t the catapult that I need to get into those other things and he went back. I think it’s pretty much cut and dry.

BILL BEHRENS: Christian honestly was pretty happy. One of the primary reasons Christian didn’t renew with TNA had very little to do with him being unhappy with how well he was being used and all that kind of stuff, it had a lot to do with the financial crisis and the fact that Christian has a really nice expensive house and even though he had been wise and invested his money, he invested his money. All of the sudden the nest egg didn’t become as big a nest, and another run with WWE where you can make real money became a better idea. TNA wasn’t going to belly up to the bar and give Christian the same kind of money that he has as an upside in a WWE deal. The reality of the WWE deal is not your downside, but what you can make on the upside. I was talking, for example, to a recently released talent who just got his commission check from a video game and the commission check was for $20,000. There is no one at TNA right now on an entire commission check from all merchandise that makes that much, on a quarterly basis it just doesn’t happen. That’s the dramatic difference between the two. Jeff Hardy had as little as $150,000 downside at WWE, when he left had made well over 1 million dollars in the previous year, which is one of the reasons Jeff Hardy can sign with TNA and make considerably less money, dramatically less.

Trish Stratus Explains How WWE Can Improve The Divas Division

Former WWE diva Trish Stratus recently spoke to the Miami Herald to promote Sunday’s WrestleMania 28 pay-per-view. Trish spoke about her acting career, the state of the Diva’s division, a possible second season of Tough Enough, how yoga affects her life, and more.

As one of the most successful WWE divas of all time, Trish is familiar with the lack of time and focus given to the Divas division:

“Jazz and I were given that same two-minute timeslot and were regarded the same. We were just two chicks where there were the puppy chants and things like that. It was up to us to put something together that was so memorable or out of the box or giving them a certain level of entertainment or performance for the fans. At the end of the day it is what Vince [McMahon] and the other members of production want, but they are very much about what the fans want.

“We said we need the fans to demand more women so we went out there and tried to give them a match where they think, ‘Man, I’m not going to chant puppies anymore. I’m actually going to cheer for more of this.’ Then suddenly we found that because the interest has grown from the fans that allowed our ideas to be spoken louder to the production team. I kind of see it as my or their responsibility.

“I always said, whatever time they give you, it is your responsibility to make those the best one, two, three or five minutes you have because that is your opportunity to give the fans what they demand to see more of you.

Stratus then explained how she feels WWE could improve the Women’s division:

“I think what WWE got away from was keeping it just the women. You have two women feuding then they put a mishmash of eight people in there, so nobody gets a real focus. I think what was key was seeing the women in the men storylines like we have seen with Rosa Mendes out there with the guys. It gives them the opportunity to be out there with other characters. We are seeing them in valet roles a little bit more, and that helps highlight them and allows character development happen. It seems like they are moving in the right direction.”
