Adam Copeland’s next career decision could eventually close the door on one of wrestling’s biggest comeback stories.
During a Tuesday appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Copeland was asked whether AEW is where he expects to finish his in-ring career. His answer was immediate.
“Yes. Yeah. That’s where I want to. I know that may disappoint a lot of people, but I love it there.
For WWE fans, that may be difficult to hear considering how much of Copeland’s career was built there. He spent more than two decades with WWE, became a multiple-time world champion and made his remarkable return to wrestling with the company in 2020.
Edge’s WWE Story is Complete
But Copeland believes that chapter is complete.
I love the company. I love the attitude, the exuberance. I love the drive. I love the excitement that I see from the locker room. Yeah, I don’t wanna go anywhere else. I’m good. I did everything I could do there, and then some. And again, they got everything out of me that they could have. So it’s for the better, which is all you can ask for in a partnership.
His AEW run also appears to have more time left. Copeland explained that his contract may originally have been approaching its end around October, but time away for his broken leg and acting projects including The Beekeeper and Percy Jackson could have extended the deal.
The contract wasn’t coming up, but I think it might’ve come up in October. But with The Beekeeper, Percy Jackson, and the broken leg, I think that all adds up as tacked-on time.
That matters because Copeland has already acknowledged that retirement is getting closer. At 52, his body is beginning to make the decision for him after giving him another six years in wrestling following his forced retirement in 2011.
He has even joked about arthritis becoming his “best friend,” while admitting this retirement should be easier to accept because he knows it’s coming.
And now, there’s one more thing we know about that final chapter.
When Adam Copeland eventually decides it’s time, he doesn’t plan on returning to WWE for one last goodbye.
He plans to retire in AEW.
