AEW is internally discussing a return for Matt Sydal following his two-year absence from the promotion, according to Mike Johnson of PWInsider.
Sydal underwent right foot surgery in 2024 to correct an injury stemming from a motorcycle accident 12 years earlier. The procedure involved breaking and re-fusing several bones and inserting hardware to reset his toes into the joints. His last AEW appearance came against Konosuke Takeshita on the May 22, 2024 episode of Dynamite.
Sydal returned to in-ring competition on July 19, 2025, facing Ultimo Dragon at a wrestling event in France, suggesting that his foot has progressed enough to resume regular competition. He originally debuted in AEW as a surprise entrant in the Casino Battle Royal at All Out 2020.
No timeline has been confirmed for his return to AEW programming.
