WWE is not done rewriting SummerSlam.
Dave Meltzer reported this afternoon that a major storyline development is planned for Finn Balor vs. Sami Zayn tonight, the No. 1 Contender’s match set to open Night 2 in Minneapolis.
The current plan is that the match will be changed and there will be several twists in that match.
Meltzer does not say what the change is. He also reports that Saturday’s tease of CM Punk against Gunther was misdirection, describing it as a swerve aimed at the future rather than the immediate present, and says the reason it was done will become clear soon.
The tease came on the Night 1 post-show. Punk ran through potential challengers after retaining the Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes, naming Trick Williams, Zayn and Gunther before the crowd chanted for Oba Femi.
Gunther has a case. He beat Nick Aldis on Night 1, the first WWE match of Aldis’ career, forcing a submission with the sleeper in 11:40. That extended a run through Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles, and his feud with Aldis was built entirely on being denied a title shot.
Zayn arrives with a grievance of his own. He held the Undisputed WWE Championship for nine days before Punk took it from him on July 6 and has not been given a rematch. He told ESPN this weekend that he was not thrilled about having to qualify at all.
Bálor earned his place by winning a fatal four-way on the July 24 SmackDown. Night 2 starts at 6 pm ET from U.S. Bank Stadium.
