CM Punk is champion again.

Cody Rhodes had earned the right to challenge Sami Zayn for the WWE Championship at tonight’s Raw from Chicago after defeating Jey Uso on Friday’s SmackDown. He couldn’t cash in the title shot however, as Gunther attacked the American Nightmare on Raw, letting to the medical not clearing him for the match.

Nick Aldis then informed Adam Pearce that he had the man to replace Cody in the match in the building, and it turned out to be none other than Chicago’s own CM Punk.

The Straight Edge Star went on to deliver an instant classic with the WWE Champion, despite it being Punk’s first match since WrestleMania 42. Both stars competed in a highly physical match, and they had to resort to using each other’s moves in the end to try and get the upper hand.

Sami delivered a couple of GTS to the challenger but he couldn’t get the pin. Punk in return, tried to take Sami out with a helluva kick, but he failed to connect the first couple of times. The former AEW Star finally delivered a Helluva kick of his own after avoiding one from the defending champion. He followed it up with a GTS to win the WWE Championship once again in his hometown.
