Dominik Mysterio Almost Debuted In A Mask

Dominik Mysterio has become one of WWE’s best heels with his face fully on display, but his original plan looked very different.

Speaking with Ariel Helwani, the Intercontinental Champion revealed he wanted to debut wearing a mask, and had even gotten one made before the plan fell by the wayside.

When I first started training, I had masks made. I still have my prototype mask that I would use to train with. Imagine just like a normal Mysterio mask, but instead of the two eyes, it’s like a whole visor. Almost Power Rangers-style.

The reason it never happened, he explained, was timing. Dominik was thrown into the deep end in 2020, pulled into his father Rey’s bitter feud with Seth Rollins as a wide-eyed babyface and handed a Street Fight against Rollins as his first-ever match at SummerSlam. There was no runway to build his own presentation.

I just think it all happened so fast with the Seth Rollins storyline and me coming up to help my dad, and being a babyface, it all happened so quickly that I didn’t have an opportunity to pick my name, my music. I wanted to debut with the mask.

Ultimately, he came to feel the mask wouldn’t have carried the same mystique it does for other luchadors anyway.

Also, people have seen me without a mask since I was 8 years old, so it didn’t really make a difference to me.
