Backstage Frustration Over Gunther’s Recent Creative Direction

Questions about Gunther’s future.

The Ring General seemed to be at a career high after retiring legends such as Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles in the span of a few months between July 2025 and January 2026. Many believe that the company has failed to follow up on the momentum he built with these wins since then.

While the former World Champion has continued being featured regularly on TV as part of the storyline around the WWE championship after his post-WrestleMania move to SmackDown, there have been questions regarding his future, as the company does not seem to have any clear plans for him.

Confusion over Gunther’s Creative Direction

WrestleVotes recently provided an update on the backstage chatter regarding the wrestling veteran. The site claimed that there has been a ‘mild sense’ of frustration and confusion over the recent use of Gunther:

In speaking with a source, it was mentioned to us that his current direction has raised questions among those in creative, especially considering the trajectory he was on following his string of retirements and his move to SmackDown.

According to the report, there has been some uncertainty regarding how WWE intends to capitalize on the momentum Gunther built after retiring multiple legends, with questions about whether they truly had a plan for him following the John Cena retirement match.

Gunther defeated Nick Aldis at the SummerSlam PPV in August. He wasn’t featured on the following Sunday Night’s Main Event on September 6, and he also failed to qualify for Money in the Bank in his most recent TV match at the September 25 SmackDown.
