Jeff Cobb is back in New Japan Pro Wrestling, and his return came with an immediate confrontation against a former partner.
Cobb made his surprise reappearance during the G1 Climax 36 final at Ryogoku Sumo Hall, roughly 16 months after his previous run with the promotion came to a close.
The moment unfolded following a six-man tag match, in which Callum Newman, Great-O-Khan, and HENARE defeated Yuto-Ice, OSKAR, and Daiki Nagai. Newman picked up the pin on Nagai and continued the attack well after the bell.
As Newman pulled out his sword and cornered his fallen opponent, Gedo stepped in and teased that he had someone in mind who could deal with the United Empire leader’s escalating attitude.
That’s when Cobb emerged, confronting his former stablemate directly. Newman offered Cobb a chance to reaffirm his loyalty to United Empire, but Cobb refused, leveling him with a shoulder tackle before aligning himself with Gedo and Unbound Co. instead.
The reunion-turned-rivalry carries some history. Cobb and Newman had actually won the IWGP Tag Team Championship together, defeating Tetsuya Naito and Hiromu Takahashi in April 2025, only for Cobb to request his release from NJPW just nine days later, forcing the titles to be vacated.
He wrapped up his eight-year run with the company shortly after, receiving a proper send-off from the crowd and his United Empire teammates.
From there, Cobb resurfaced in WWE roughly three weeks later, debuting at Backlash to help Jacob Fatu retain the United States Championship and aligning with Solo Sikoa’s group, which was later renamed MFT. WWE rebranded him JC Mateo during that run, which lasted just under a year before his release this past May.
With WWE now in his rearview mirror, Cobb’s NJPW return puts him on a collision course with Newman, setting up a fresh chapter for two performers who once stood on the same side of the ring.
