John Cena has revealed the physical toll of wrestling.

One point that was repeatedly brought up by fans during the Cenation Leader’s retirement tour was that he looked good physically, and many believed that he could continue wrestling if he wanted. The wrestling veteran himself, however, frequently mentioned how his body could not take the toll anymore.

During a recent interview with Metro, the 49-year-old revealed some details of the kind of physical effects he had to deal with after every return. John Cena first discussed how he is able to enjoy wrestling as a fan after his retirement, without the physical toll of being an active competitor:

I have looked essentially the same for the entire run of my adulthood, So training-wise, [retirement] isn’t any different. The biggest reward is physical activity, especially in these last four years; [it] has been incredibly tough on the body.

John Cena returns to confront Roman Reigns: Money in the Bank 2021

Giving an example of what he had to deal with, John Cena revealed that his back had been left ‘swollen and out of line’ after his 2021 run:

So I’m walking twisted, and I got to put so much effort into making everything right again before I can train again. Man, now the workouts are great because I’m not doing as much getting everything right. The car is spending less time in the shop and more time on the track.

The 17-time world champion made a surprise WWE return during the 2021 Money In The Bank event to confront Roman Reigns. He wrestled a total of 16 matches during this run, including the SummerSlam match with The Tribal Chief where he was originally supposed to win his 17th world title.
