The wrestling world came unglued as CM Punk made a shocking return on the July 6 episode of Monday Night RAW, replacing the injured Cody Rhodes and defeating Sami Zayn to become the new Undisputed WWE Champion. However, one former WWE star evidently was not happy to see Punk become the new champion.
He is none other than former WWE NXT star Kenta. The current Pro Wrestling NOAH star has had differences with Punk in the past over the former WWE Champion’s use of his finisher, the GTS. In a tweet sent on X after Punk’s WWE title victory, Kenta said:
I hate seeing this.
CM Punk won the WWE title after 15 years
Although he held the World Heavyweight Championship earlier this year, CM Punk had not won the WWE Championship in 15 years. His last victory came at the 2011 WWE Survivor Series event, where he defeated Alberto Del Rio to win the title. Moreover, it marked his WWE title win in the same arena where he first won the championship 15 years earlier.
It was the infamous WWE Money in the Bank 2011 edition where Punk defeated his arch-nemesis, John Cena, to become champion. Following that, he blew a flying kiss to Vince McMahon and walked out of the AllState Arena with the title, after his contract expired. Interestingly, Punk recreated a similar moment upon his latest WWE title victory on RAW this week.
With CM Punk back on the top of the mountain, the road to SummerSlam PLE has become more interesting.
