It’s official: Kevin Knight will challenge Kenny Omega for the AEW World Championship in the main event of AEW Redemption. And the man he beat for the title is a big reason why.
Per Fightful Select, Knight vs. Omega is locked in to headline the pay-per-view. The outlet had previously reported the world title match would top Redemption after Omega took the belt from MJF, and that MJF would be stepping away from AEW television for a stretch. His fingerprints, though, are all over this one.
Fightful reports that MJF was a driving creative force behind the idea of Knight challenging Omega for the title at Redemption. He’d long pushed for whoever held the TNT Championship to challenge Omega once he won the world title. That reportedly didn’t have to be Knight specifically, but MJF was in favor of it, as well as Knight joining the Don Callis Family.
Both of those wishes have already come true on screen. Knight captured the TNT Championship in a Casino Gauntlet at Dynasty in April, then turned heel at Double or Nothing by attacking Darby Allin and joined the Don Callis Family on the June 3 Dynamite. The 29-year-old “Jet” has been openly campaigning for a world title shot ever since, making him a natural fit for the exact scenario MJF had been pushing.
AEW Redemption, the promotion’s first, takes place Sunday on HBO Max PPV.
