Backstage Reaction To CM Punk Winning World Title In WWE

ByAnutosh BajpaiProfessional Wrestling Journalist

The reaction to CM Punk’s WWE title win was ‘nothing too bad.’

The Straight Edge Star went on a hiatus right after WrestleMania 42, where his 169-day run with the World Heavyweight Championship came to an end. He then went on to win the WWE Championship in his return match on the July 6 Raw this month. This title change attracted a lot of negative reaction from fans as it ended Sami Zayn’s first world title reign at just 9 days.

During a recent Q&A, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select was asked what was the backstage reaction to the former AEW Star winning the top title in the company. The response mentioned that things would have been different if CM Punk won the title immediately after his WWE return in 2023. While there are still some people in the company who have sour feelings towards the wrestling veteran, most people just work with him amicably:

There isn’t this constant uproar like there is online. If he would have came in 2023 and immediately won the title, yes there would have been a lot of that. Yes, there are still some people with sour feelings. However, the largest portion of talent just work with him amicably and know he’s going to be a big part of the company. There’s just not a lot to really go off of here. Maybe some eye rolls? Nothing too bad.

CM Punk is scheduled to defend his title against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam. The announced stipulation for his Saturday Night’s Main Event match, however, can change the shape of the upcoming PPV main event. Punk also recently spoke about his WWE absence after WrestleMania 42 and revealed the reason behind it. You can check out his comments here.
