Rey Mysterio has an answer for why his son is watching the lucha tournament from the outside, and it comes down to where Dominik learned the job.
As AAA General Manager, Rey announced an eight-man tournament to crown a challenger for Roman Reigns and the World Heavyweight Championship, with the final on the September 14 RAW from Arena CDMX in Mexico City. The field is drawn from luchadors across RAW, SmackDown and AAA. Dominik, the reigning AAA Mega Champion, is not in it, and he confronted his father about that on Monday’s RAW.
Speaking on WWE Now, Rey laid out his reasoning.
Well, I could say for one, he has never trained in lucha libre. He can say he’s the best luchador. He does a couple moves here and there, but his training was always on the American side. He trained in Tampa, he trained in Canada, and he trained in San Diego.
That part is a matter of record. Dominik started training in 2017 under Jay Lethal in Tampa, went through Lance Storm’s academy in Canada, and worked with his father and Konnan in San Diego before the WWE Performance Center.
So when you speak about luchadores, born and raised, that’s your bread and butter. That’s where you began. That’s where you got your ass kicked.
He closed on the gap between them.
I think my concept of a luchador is completely different from Dom’s concept.
Dominik lost to Dragon Lee in an impromptu match on Monday, and Lee was then taken out by Big Cass, leaving his first-round match against El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. on August 17 in question.
