The Rock to Produce a Live-Action Medusa Movie

Dwayne Johnson is producing a live-action Medusa movie for Disney through Seven Bucks, with Tangled writer Michael Montemayor drafting the first script.

The Rock is heading back to Disney, this time with a monster from Greek mythology.

Dwayne Johnson is producing a live-action movie about Medusa, the snake-haired Gorgon whose gaze turned people to stone, Deadline reported on Friday. That’s Medusa, not Madusa, the wrestler who entered the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015 as Alundra Blayze.

For now, Johnson is only behind the camera. Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro wrote:

Note, this is not a starring vehicle for Dwayne Johnson at this point in time (but how cool would it be if it ultimately is?). Johnson is producing with his Seven Bucks partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, with Melissa Fried overseeing for the label. Matt Smith is also producing under Electro Corduroy Entertainment.

Michael Montemayor will write the first draft of the script. He also wrote Tangled, Disney’s upcoming live-action take on Rapunzel, so this marks his second recent Disney project about a character with unusual hair.

The film is being developed under the multi-year first-look film deal Seven Bucks signed with Disney in June 2024. The partnership expanded in February 2025 with a separate TV deal with Disney’s 20th Television.

Johnson and Seven Bucks have teamed with Disney before on Jungle Cruise and the live-action Moana. The company also inducted Johnson as a Disney Legend at D23.
