Goldberg has won world titles, built a legendary undefeated streak in WCW and earned a place in the WWE Hall of Fame. When he was asked how he wants to be remembered, none of that was at the top of his list.
Goldberg spoke about it on NewsNation’s BIFF podcast, where he talked about his family and his relationship with his son, Gage. Near the end, the host explained that when he coached football, he had players write their own eulogies to think about the kind of men they wanted to become. He asked Goldberg what he would want Gage to say about him after he’s gone.
Goldberg called it a tough question. His answer was that “Goldberg” ranks far down the road for him. The titles that matter most are father and husband.
He wants to be remembered as someone who treated people the way they wanted to be treated, who cared more about his family than himself, and who would do anything to protect them and prepare them for what comes. He added that one of his biggest strengths is being able to put a smile on someone’s face.
Wow, that’s a tough one. Uh, you know, I would say that um I treat people the way they want to be treated. The most important title that I have is father and husband.
Goldberg is way down the road, but I was a father that cared more about his family than himself and would do anything and everything not only to protect them, but to arm them for what’s to come. And I care about people. I really do. At the end of the day, as I said, my my my biggest uh asset is to be able to put a smile on somebody’s face.
He then spoke about fatherhood. He wants Gage to know he’ll always have backup, no matter what, even when Gage would rather he weren’t there.
He acknowledged that fatherhood doesn’t come with a manual, because every family and every situation is different. His goal is to be the best person, father, husband and idol he can be, and he believes that’s everyone’s duty while they’re here, since everyone’s time is limited.
And as a human being, I like to think that daily I do that as much as humanly possible. As a father, um, I’m always there for my boy. Always. If he ever needs a backup, he doesn’t have to go far because all he has to do is turn his head and I’m right there, no matter what. 247. And a lot of times when he doesn’t want me there, but you know, at the end of the day, you got to there’s no manual to be a father.
Goldberg said no one can outrun death. What matters is looking back and knowing you did all you could and positively affected as many people as possible, with being a good father and husband first among them. He then joked that all of it should go on his gravestone: “I think in a long dissertation, that’s what should be up my headstone.”
There truly is, you know, everybody’s different. Everyone’s situation’s different. But I just want to be the best person that I can be, the best father I can be, the best husband I can be, and the best best idol that I can be. And and I believe that’s everybody’s everybody’s duty on this while they’re on this earth because, you know, we all have a limited time.
The host was visibly moved and told Goldberg that Gage should be proud to have a father who cares so much about his future.
