Roman Reigns says only one man has proven he can carry WWE, and it is Cody Rhodes.
Rhodes ended Reigns’ 1,316-day run as Undisputed WWE Champion at WrestleMania 40. Reigns stepped away until SummerSlam, and Rhodes held the title for a year before dropping it to John Cena. Even in the year between WrestleMania 39 and 40, with Reigns on a limited schedule, Rhodes was the company’s top babyface.
Speaking with Mark Elibert of Complex, Reigns laid out what he looks for in a top star. Consistency, durability, ambition and work ethic.
As it’s been shown with John (Cena) and then also with me, it takes a decade or so. Can you perform every single time and then deliver when you’re asked? Can you do it when you’re tired? Can you do it when you’re sick? Can you do it when you’re hungover after WrestleMania?
The standard, as he describes it, is not about matches.
Can you carry the banner for this company? This is a billion-dollar machine. It’s not easy. There’s only been one who’s been able to carry that banner, and that’s been Cody.
The two are also about to share a screen. Reigns and Rhodes both appear in the upcoming Street Fighter film.
