Roman Reigns doesn’t step into the ring outside of premium live events very often, but when he does, he sees it as an opportunity to elevate whoever’s standing across from him.
Reigns competed in his first non-PLE match since January 2025 when he faced Penta on the September 14 episode of Raw, successfully defending his WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
Speaking with Mark Elibert of Complex afterward, Reigns explained the distinction between simply having a match with him versus being positioned as someone he’s actively elevating. He uses his own drawing power to put momentum behind a rising star.
‘The OTC’ argued that stepping in the ring with him guarantees the best version of himself as a performer, while acknowledging the statement might come across as arrogant even though he doesn’t intend it that way.
It’s one thing to have a match with me. It’s another to be the guy that we’re working towards to transition from me, or to use my equity to then put a rocket on that guy’s back.
“If you’re in the ring with me, your value’s going up. It sounds arrogant, but I don’t mean it that way. I just mean that if you get in the ring with me, you’re gonna get the very best Roman Reigns.
Reigns was careful to note the elevation only works one direction if the other wrestler already brings something of their own to the table that is genuine crowd investment. He can then amplify, rather than create from nothing.
You put them with someone like me, and I’ll be able to exploit it and then try to magnify and make it even greater. But they got to have that thing going for themselves already.
Reigns’ next title defense comes at WWE Money in the Bank, where he’ll face LA Knight.
