For a moment in time, it seemed that AEW was on its way to a major dream clash between Thekla and Mercedes Mone at AEW All In. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, though, as Thekla dropped the AEW Women’s World Championship to Willow Nightingale just one month before the pay-per-view.
At All Out, Thekla has an opportunity to finally make that dream match a reality when she takes on Nightingale in a number one contender’s match, with the winner slated to challenge Mone for the AEW Women’s World Championship at WrestleDream. Even still, Thekla admittedly has some reservations, specifically due to Mone and Nightingale’s recent injuries.
[A match with Mercedes Mone] would obviously be a huge one,” Thekla told TV Insider. I’ve seen how people have been looking forward to it. A lot of people thought this was the match they were going to get to see at All In. When it happens, it’s going to be big. It’s going to be interesting. I know it is going to happen. When? Probably WrestleDream, maybe not, you know? Like, b****es keep on getting hurt left and right. You never f***ing know. I’m hoping for the best, you know?
Heading into All In, Nightingale suffered a broken hand. Nevertheless, she laid the AEW Women’s World Championship on the line against Mone, who went on to win the title via submission.
In the process, Mone broke her nose and is now unable to compete at All Out. She is, however, expected to be medically cleared in time for AEW WrestleDream on October 17, where a title defense against “The Toxic Spider” or Nightingale awaits her, barring any other obstacles.
