Sheamus is leaving WWE, but the veteran isn’t a free agent just yet. Fightful Select now reports that the former WWE Champion remains under contract until October 1, 2026, later than many expected when news of his exit first broke earlier this month.
The delay comes down to how the split happened. Rather than being released, Sheamus turned down a restructured deal WWE offered him while he was recovering from shoulder surgery. Because his contract is simply expiring rather than being terminated, he isn’t subject to the standard 90-day non-compete clause. The moment his deal lapses on October 1, he can sign anywhere he wants. Fightful noted the offer wasn’t framed as an ultimatum, unlike some other recent deals.
It’s the same situation that led to The New Day’s departure. Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, now going by Kofi and Austin Creed, were also approached about restructured contracts earlier this year and walked when they declined. Sheamus confirmed his own exit in a farewell social media post before changing his handle to his real name, S. Farrelly (Stephen Farrelly).
The Celtic Warrior has been with WWE since 2009 and leaves as one of the most decorated stars of his era: a three-time WWE Champion, a one-time World Heavyweight Champion, a three-time United States Champion, and a five-time Tag Team Champion. He also won King of the Ring in 2010, the Royal Rumble in 2012, and Money in the Bank in 2015. The Intercontinental Championship is the lone major singles title that eluded him, leaving him just short of Grand Slam status.
His most recent run centered on a hard-hitting rivalry with Gunther, and his last match came in November 2025, teaming with John Cena and Rey Mysterio on Raw before the shoulder injury sidelined him. The lack of a proper send-off has drawn notice, with WWE moving him to the alumni section of its website and Sheamus scrubbing the company from his social media accounts rather than getting a farewell run.
Once he hits the open market this fall, he’ll be one of the most experienced names available at a time when AEW and other promotions have been aggressive in free agency. AEW is a potential landing spot, with former tag team partner Claudio Castagnoli expected to push for the signing. However, others within the company are split about adding yet another ex-WWE name to the roster. The AEW chatter is already swirling, with a dispute involving his agent spilling into public view.
